Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this pray-er for our sick brothers and sister whom you have re-deemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

Fr. Anthony’s Faith Formation Corner The Liturgical Life and the Devotional Life

This year marks the centennial anniversary (1917-2017) of

the apparition of the Blessed Mother to the three children in Fatima, Portugal. On the 13th day of every month from May until October this year, a lot of parishes throughout the world, including our St. Bar-bara’s church, host different types of Marian devotions in order for the faithful to obtain the “plenary indulgence.” [Coincidentally, 2017 also marks the fifth centennial anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation (1517): and the question concerning indul-gences was one of the main ones that compelled Luther to “protest” against the Church of Rome… But that is a topic for another time]. The 13th of this month, August, falls on a Sunday. Our parish has wisely decided to forego the Rosary service in favor of the Sunday celebrations of the Lord’s Paschal Mystery. This brings me to the core of my reflection for this week: the importance and primacy of the liturgical life over the devotional life within the Catholic Church.

I have heard from both Catholics and Protestants (and non-Christians as well) that the main difference between Catholicism and Protestantism revolves around Mary. And that is totally NOT correct. I think the question concerning the Blessed Mother only constitutes a minor difference. There are many other important doctrinal differences that I can-not elaborate here. And also, a few traditional European Protestants actually DO honor Mary… Anyway I want to re-mind our Catholic Christian audience that as much as we love and honor the Blessed Mother, our main worship does not revolve around Mary. Our “Christian” faith is precisely what its name implies, “Christ-centered.” And our main form of worship/prayer centers on the Sunday celebration of the Mass, or the Eucharist, where we experience the fullness of the Paschal Mystery of the Lord. That has to be the “source and summit” of all our prayer life, as the Second Vatican Council reminds us. This is what we call the liturgical aspect of our faith. There is also the devotional aspect, which in-cludes different devotions: the Rosary, the Divine Mercy chaplet, Sacred Heart devotion, etc. Obviously, the liturgical aspect is of greater importance by far.

Having said that, any parishioner who is so intent on gaining a plenary indulgence on Sunday, August 13, should realize that the Church (and ultimately, God) would prefer that he/she focuses on the Sunday liturgy before all else. Devotions to the Blessed Mother, or any particular devotion, are great and they enhance the faith: but the faithful should know that these do not constitute the essential aspect of our faith and worship. The faithful are not required to adhere to any apparition of the Blessed Mother, even those officially sanctioned by the Church… A few weeks ago, there was a gentleman who showed me some Youtube clips of a statue of the Blessed Mother crying in Vietnam. And he wondered why the Vietnamese bishops have not mentioned it. He also said that no Vietnamese priest around here mentions it—as if it were a mortal sin NOT to talk about it. I did not have a chance to properly catechize him on the dis-tinction I have written about. But anyway, our Christian faith would be very un-Christian if we are to adhere to some strange phenomenon someone put on Facebook or Youtube. Catholics love the Blessed Mother, but any respect shown toward her has to lead us closer to the Lord, who is the alpha and the omega, and who takes center stage in all aspects of life.
