Commodore’s Message ...................................................................................... Kevin Overton

Welcome to the new sailing season. The first race of the Trial Series was held on Sunday 15 September with all participants describing the weather conditions as challenging.

Although the dam is at 41% and falling (unless good rain falls in the catchment) there is plenty of good sailing to be enjoyed.

We start the season with all office positions filled by very capable and committed people. I ask you to get behind these people bringing ideas, suggestions and/or help relative to their portfolio directly to them. This in no way negates the opportunity for members to address our meetings directly on any issue as they have done in the past.

For the newer members without a boat, or those with a boat currently under repair, I wish to remind you there are Club owned boats for your use. We currently have the following boats in the Club owned fleet:

Windrush (catamaran) Toppers (4)

Laser Manly Junior

Canadian (sloop rigged dinghy) i550 ( sports boat for the more experienced sailor)

If you wish to avail yourself of one of the above boats, a call to Max or myself, prior to Sunday, would ensure they are not double booked. An early arrival on Sunday would be appreciated so we can help you rig if it is your first time for a particular boat. We charge a small fee of $5 each, for use of the Club boats above the race fee.

Hope to see you all soon and good sailing

Kevin

Opening Day Lunch on Sunday 13 October The first "Red Letter" event on this year’s calendar is Opening Day. The format for the day is to sit down to a 'bring a plate lunch' (hopefully with some food on it to share) at 12 noon. Doug has requested that the plate carry savoury foods as he will provide the sweets.

Lunch will be followed by a sail past of all boats prior to the start of the race.

It is a special occasion. Ships are dressed with bunting on special occasions. Our boats need only be dressed for the sail past. Wouldn’t this be spectacular?

Our very loyal Deck Chair Admirals and their Ladies will review the sail past.

[Officially, there is a protocol: the International Code Flags are used to dress ship. In nautical practice, it is said that the flags are 'worn' and not 'flown' by the vessel. Officer's flags, club burgees and national flags are not used as part of the bunting. The ship is dressed at 0800 and remains dressed (at anchor only, except for a vessel's maiden or final voyage) until evening colors at sunset.]

BRING A PLATE, BRING A BOAT, OR BRING A FRIEND OR DO ALL 3!

Treasurer’s Message ............................................................................... Denise Bruschweiler

New sailing season officially starts on 1 October. Membership renewal subscriptions are now due. Would you please complete form and return with cheque; or direct deposit and still complete form and hand in.

Discover Sailing Day on Sunday 27 October from 9 am to 12 noon It’s a great way for visitors to see the club and get out on the water. So, we need people and boats to make the morning a success so visitors can have an enjoyable introduction to being on a sailing boat. Check it out by visiting discoversailing.org.au. It’s free and anyone is welcome.

Here are a few pics from 2010 with parents and children waiting patiently for a sail with our skippers on their boats.

Introduction to Sailing Weekend – 22, 23 and 24 November Denise Bruschweiler will have completed her Boat Handling Course as well as her Dinghy Instructors Course, so she will be well prepared to run the weekend. Denise will need helpers and boats. Participant costs will be set at our October meeting

Renewal of Annual Entry Pass into Lake Keepit State Park Annual Pass Renewal fee is discounted to $80 for Lake Keepit Sailing Club members. Sometimes this is overlooked by Lake Keepit State Park staff, so please be courteous when pointing out that you are a sailing club member.

Visitors and intending New Members

Are covered by YA insurance for 3 visits and/or sails

Are encouraged to attend and/or sail 3 times before being nominated for membership

Equipment Auditors Equipment Audits are voluntary. It is a worthwhile safety exercise for those sailing away at regattas or other events. The audit helps a boat owner/skipper to comply with the YA Special Regulations. Any boat owner/skipper can request an audit. We now have 4 auditors: Denise Bruschweiler, Wendy Barwick, Ian and Lyn Pine. A Category 7 YNSW 2013-2017 YA Special Regulations Equipment Audit Form can be downloaded from the Club’s website or at: www.nsw.yachting.org.au/site/yachting/nsw/downloads/Equipment%20Audit%20Forms/2013-17/cat%207%202013%20form%20130509.pdf

Northcott Disability Services On Sunday morning (22 September) several members met with Paul Chambers, Program Coordinator for Northcott. He is looking for some rewarding programs for his adult clients who have some intellectual and physical disabilities. We may be able to help out. Such things as carer availability, carer ratios, availability of sailing club members and boats all need to be discussed at our October meeting. It was suggested that Northcott carers be encouraged to participate in our Discover Sailing Day to see the Club and to see what sailing is all about.

Website (keepitsailingclub.org.au) Lyn Pine has a technical problem with software and/or computer that prevents the Home Page only being updated. At her cost, the Home Page has been edited so that there is a link in the Upcoming Events box that takes you to the Events Page where all events can be easily updated.

Diduno The first ocean going ship built in Australia was the SLOEPIE, in 1728 by the shipwrecked survivors of the ZEEWIJK, on the Houtman Abrolhos, Gun Island. It was 30 metres in length, had 2 masts, was square rigged and made the journey back to Batavia. Read more at www.museum.wa.gov.au/maritime-archaeology-db/wrecks/zeewijk

Australia II celebrations Australians have been celebrating the 30

th anniversary of Australia II’s win in the America’s Cup. The

1983 win was described as the ‘race of the century’; and the 2013 race has been described as the ‘race of this century’. Team USA couldn’t have done it without the Aussies. We’d be more than happy If our boats could go 3 times the speed of the wind on the lake!!

Tall Ships These mighty vessels arrive in Sydney Harbour on 3 October. Open days are from 6-9 October. Visit this website for more information: www.navy.gov.au/ifr/events/tall-ships-program
