Summer Fun for All Ages!Butterfly and Caterpillar Weekend shines bright, Summer Thursdays continue into the night.

popular Butterfly and Caterpillar Weekend returns August 17 and 18 for a fourth year. Meanwhile, our Summer Thursdays program continues with a stellar lineup of shows and activities under the Charles Hayden Planetarium dome.

A Closer Look The star of Butterfly and Caterpillar Weekend is the Caterpillar Lab from the New

Hampshire-based nonprofit of the same name. With no separation glass, you have

a front-row seat to witness these young crawlers in various stages of development as

they move around on their host plants while eating, camouflaging, and even defending

themselves against perceived threats. Caterpillar Lab staff will be here to answer your

questions and share information.

Butterfly and Caterpillar Weekend is

flick was originally released in 1980

and remains a force in pop culture today.

“Caterpillars are as unique and diverse as the butterflies and moths they

metamorphize into,” says Lea Morgan, curator of invertebrates in the

Butterfly Garden. “They can be brightly colored with alien-like projections

to advertise danger or dull and cryptic to evade predation.”

Visit the Butterfly Garden to see a wide variety of living butterflies and

other perhaps less beautiful, but no less fascinating, insects. While

here for the special weekend, build your own habitat that you can

take home to attract butterflies.

You’ll have a smile on your face when you see the axolotls,

a unique type of salamander, that will soon call the Museum’s

expansive Hall of Human Life home. Yes, they are the same star attractions

from our recent Nature’s Superheroes: Life at the Limits temporary exhibit. Their

transition from visitors to permanent residents is not just an opportunity to

learn more about them, but also about yourself!

What Makes an Adult?

The axolotl is a neotenic species, meaning as an adult it retains juvenile

characteristics (most noticeably, gills) that other salamanders lose as they

enter maturity. Observing and learning about axolotls raises questions of

what it means to be an adult—as an axolotl and even as a human.

“When we talk about developmental milestones, such as taking your first

step or reaching your adult height, everyone reaches them in their own

unique time,” says Justin Harris, Hall of Human Life program manager.

“You can’t start counting the days or years from birth and expect to know

exactly when something will happen. Similarly, some people might say

axolotls are behind because they retain many juvenile features even

after they reach sexual maturity. But their bodies are doing exactly

what they are supposed to do.”

For researchers, one of the most exciting features that the axolotls retain

into adulthood is the ability to regrow body parts after injury. This makes

them useful for scientists working to develop regenerative medicine, and

maybe one day give people the ability to regrow new body parts.

You can soon see these new residents in the Hall of Human Life. And while

you’re there, enjoy more than 70 interactive components that will change

how you engage with your biology and manage your health!

Thomas & FriendsTM: Explore the Rails Opens Saturday, September 21

Thomas & Friends Roll into BostonMeet characters from the hit TV show while learning about trains and STEM!

The world’s most famous tank engine is making a temporary

stop at the Museum of Science. Thomas & FriendsTM: Explore

the Rails, opening September 21 in the Exhibit Halls, includes

many of the characters and locations from the hit children’s

television show, with lots of opportunities for interactive STEM

learning aimed at Museum visitors ages 2 – 7.

As Seen on TV

You’ll feel like you’re right there with your friend Thomas

surrounded by the Island of Sodor’s iconic locations:

Knapford Station, Sodor Steamworks, and many more.

Help Thomas and his friends solve challenges ranging

from simple shape identification to more complex

engineering problems.

Climb into Thomas’s cab and see the engine’s inner work-

ings. Then flip levers and handle movable parts that create

the sounds of brakes, whistles, and steam. Fix Percy’s wobbly

wheel by removing and replacing parts and work with others

to load his coal box and fill his tank with water from a tower.

Other activities include loading luggage, livestock, and other

freight into the train as well as putting on a conductor’s

uniform to exchange money and sell tickets.

Preparing Young Learners

The exhibit was developed by the Minnesota Children’s

Museum, whose president Dianne Krizan says it delivers

“high-quality playful learning experiences” rooted in STEM.

“The skills and proficiencies children learn and refine

through play in the early years set the stage for future

learning and success from the kindergarten classroom to

the workplace,” Krizan says.

This is mostly a science exhibit, but it’s also about history with

the Thomas & Friends retrospective. See model engines from

the original live action series, copies of the original drawings

and manuscripts from creator Rev. W. Awdry, and memora-

bilia documenting the history and evolution of the characters

through various media and toys.

It’s time to lace up your running shoes and put on your favorite STEM-inspired attire for a sensational science-themed 5K fun run along the Esplanade on the Charles River. The Museum’s inaugural Sci-K is the perfect fall activity for everyone!

Families, friends, and individuals of all ages are welcome to join the fun and support a great cause during this dog-and-stroller-friendly, untimed run! Award ceremony (who’ll win for best costume? top fundraiser?) with food, beverages, and science activities follows the run.

Proceeds raised from this event will support the Museum’s Discovery Center, which inspires our youngest scientists through creative learning.

3 Buddies Explore Science Dozens of Boston Public Schools middle school

students with autism spectrum disorder enjoyed

several weekly guided visits to the Museum this

year through the Buddies Exploring Science

Together (BEST) Program. Museum educators

and Boston University occupational therapy

graduate students guided their visits. This is the

seventh year of the program, which is supported

by a grant from the Liberty Mutual Foundation.

4 Museum Pride In June the Museum marked LGBTQ Pride

Month in various ways. For the first time,

Museum staff officially marched in the Boston

Pride Parade, held this year on Saturday, June 8.

Throughout the month the rainbow flag flew in

front of our building during the day while the

Museum tower displayed those bright colors at

night. And our social media pages highlighted

various LGBTQ high achievers in the

STEM fields.

5 Computer Science for Kids The Museum is developing an elementary

computer science program that leverages the

pedagogy, lesson structure, and key elements of

our award-winning Engineering is Elementary®

curriculum. This summer and throughout the

school year, we’ll be working with educators

to pilot test our new computer science units.

This work is funded by grants from Bloomberg

Philanthropies and Dell. We look forward to

finding new ways to prepare today’s youngest

learners for success in school and in life. To

1 Fueling Traveling Programs The Museum’s 2019 Boston Marathon® team

raised more than $204,000 for Traveling

Programs, which bring science to more than

100,000 students annually. The Museum is

a proud community partner of the Boston

Athletic Association, offering the Traveling

Programs presentations to the cities and

towns along the race course and in local

community events and festivals. Since 2009,

the Boston Marathon runners have raised

over $1.2 million for Traveling Programs, with

the funds supporting scholarships, program

expansion, and much more.

2 Wonderfund Award The Massachusetts Department of Children

and Families (DCF) and the Massachusetts

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to

Children presented the Museum with the

Commissioner’s Community Award for our

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

The Museum garage (4th floor) houses Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations capable of charging up to four cars simultaneously. While there is no cost to charge your car, you will need a ChargePoint account to access. Regular garage parking fees apply. For more information: chargepoint.com.

Blue Bikes Share Program

Blue Bikes, metro Boston’s bicycle-sharing system, is available on the Museum’s front plaza. Blue Bikes is a regional partnership between Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, and Somerville.
