10 years and still growing
The Originals Only Art Show & Sale is one of Vancouver Island’s more unique cul-tural events. Unlike other shows this event is entirely focused on showcasing the works of painters and sculptors. Another unique and important feature is the fact that other than art cards, all the art on display is original work.
This is the 10th anniversary of the show and each year it continues to attract new art-ists form Vancouver Island, the outer islands and Powell River. In fact no other artists out-side these areas are eligible to participate so the show has a real island flavor.
From contemporary to abstract, realism to impressionism, the exhibiting artists are as diverse as their subject matter so visitors will find art that covers a broad spectrum of styles and mediums.
From the fanciful and whimsical to thought provoking studies, detailed depictions of everyday scenes to a feeling of being able to walk along the beach are just some of the many ways these talented artists express themselves.
Art patrons have come to recognize that the Originals Only Show caters to a wide variety of interests. The show has gained such a good reputation for the quality of work that gallery owners have made it a must visit event for when they are looking for new art-ists to represent in their galleries.
The show has not changed its philosophy since day one. It was created so that art-ists of all levels can participate. As you walk
around the booths, you will discover that there are artists who have been working at their passion for years and then others who are just coming out of art school.
The organizers, all volunteers and partici-pating artists, also wanted to create a show where the general public could learn more about the creative process, about techniques and speak directly to the creators. This is an important feature of the show as each artist sets up their own booth and is on hand to greet visitors and talk about their work.
This year with over 60 artists participating, the show takes on the airs of a giant outdoor art market. With this number of artists there are hundreds and hundreds of works on dis-play which makes the show a terrific oppor-tunity to find that unique piece to complete your décor or to add to your collection.
Comox Recreation who has played an integral role in the development of the show since day one takes its involvement in recre-ational programming beyond the gym doors. Their view is that recreation goes well beyond the physical and must also include those kinds of activities that activate the mind as well. The show helps to promote these other aspects of recreational programming by drawing attention the incredible number of programs available to residents.
The show is open to the public from 10 am to 5 pm on both Saturday and Sunday, August 11 & 12. For more information about the Originals Only Shows visit their website www.originalsonly.ca
