Although sometimes challenging, one’s role as a par- ent can be very rewarding and fulfilling as they guide and encourage their children to develop into caring, confident, respectful, responsible and healthy individuals. Beginning August 28, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in partnership with Waukee Family YMCA will be offer- ing Great Beginnings for Families. In this five-week skills building program the following topics will be covered: positive discipline and guidance, helping children resolve conflict, basic principles of child development, handling uncomfortable emotions and feelings and encouraging learning through play. Great Beginnings for Families will take place on Mon- days, August 28 to October 2 (no class on Labor Day) from 6:30-7:45 p.m. at the Waukee Family YMCA located at 210 Warrior Ln. Registration is $10 per family. Register by stopping by or calling the YMCA at 987-9996. Free child care will be provided for all who attend. BAGS TOURNAMENT Join us for the annual Bags Tournament at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, August 12 during the Adel Sweet Corn Festival (Old Middle School located at 215 N 11th St.). On-site reg- istration begins at the end of the parade (approx. 10:30 a.m. and closes at 11:15 a.m.). Team entry fee $30 per 2 person team. Entry fees will help to fund St. John's Youth Ministry. Cash Prizes: 1st place $100, 2nd place $75, 3rd place $50. Serving from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ADEL MASONS SECOND SUNDAY BREAKFAST The Adel Masons Second Sunday Breakfast will be held Sunday, August 13 from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Biscuits and gra- vy, sausage, pancakes, omelets, coffee, milk and OJ will be served. Adults and take outs $7, Children under 10 $3. Come join us this Sunday at 411 S. 12th St. in Adel. There will be a bake sale so take home some dessert for later! SUMMER SOLAR ECLIPSE TRIP Dallas County Conservation Board naturalists will be hosting an adult excursion to a natural area in northwest Missouri to view the total solar eclipse. The vehicles will leave Forest Park Museum, Perry Monday, August 21 at 7:30 a.m. and return around 5:30 p.m. Upon arrival, the naturalists will present some educational programming, as well as encourage people to enjoy the features of the park. The eclipse will start around 11:40 a.m. with totality be- ing reached at 1:08 p.m. The trip is limited to 16 adults, although additional people or families with young children are welcome to caravan along in their own vehicles at no charge. Cost of $10 per person to cover transportation costs and viewing glasses. Dress to be outside, and bring snacks, water and money for lunch. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. His novels are set in "Nation County", a fictional rural county in Iowa, and include many of the same charac-ters, primarily centering on police officer Carl Houseman. Dan Gable’s "A Wrestling Life 2" is the nonfiction selection which will be read in October and each of the 12 Dallas County Libraries will have tickets available for the Author Meet and Greet in October.
