Pastor’s Notebook: August 12th

To St. Michael Staff, Volunteers and parishioners:

This year has gone by so quickly that it is hard to believe that I will be leaving you to continue on my vo-

cational journey. This past year has been full of blessings. I have made many friends here at St. Michael

Parish and it is difficult to say goodbye. Yet I know that you will all be with me in prayer as I begin the

next chapter of my vocational journey. I will truly be taking you with me in my heart.

As I reflect back on this year I am reminded of how much we, as Catholic brothers and sisters, represent

the Body of Christ as described in Paul’s first letter to Corinthians:

“As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so

also Christ.” (1 Cor 12:12) And also “Now you are Christ’s body and individually parts of it.”(1 Cor 12:27)

We all bring our gifts and strengths to help one another by being here at St. Michael. Through strength-

finders, and through all of you, I have learned to recognize and utilize those strengths to minister to

others.

I will also take with me all the wonderful memories and stories of the ministries, the staff, volunteers and

all those who were ministered to. I will remember men’s shelter, Faith and Light meetings and pilgrim-

age, endless numbers of choir practices, VBS activities, Charismatic Prayer Group, RCIA meetings and

events, respect life events, bible studies and working on different projects around the parish with John

and the maintenance crews to name just a few. I will also take with me the aspects of pastoral training

that I was blessed to learn while at St. Michael, especially Eucharistic Visitor and Pastoral Care visitor.

My deepest thanks to Fr. Jim Lee, Fr. Paul Weckert , O.S.B. and Fr. Dwight Lewis for your spiritual and

practical guidance and for providing examples of what it means “to put on Christ” in serving others. I

pray that I always emulate that example of Christ in seminary and in my vocation. Thank you also for

your continued prayers and encouragement.

I have been blessed in so many ways here at St. Michael, that I doubt I can put it all on one page to you.

Know that my spirit is filled with gratitude to the staff, volunteers, friends and all parishioners who have

touched my heart this year with kindness and hospitality. My prayer is that St. Michael continues to be

the example of the Body of Christ that I have seen and experienced here. Thank you for praying for me

and being so supportive of my vocational discernment. Keep praying for more vocations in our

Archdiocese and Church. God willing, there will be opportunities to visit with you from seminary so that

we keep in touch.

God Bless,

Carl Sisolak

REFLECTION MOMENT

The Letter to the Ephesians urges us to be

mindful that part of our life together in the

Eucharist means being kind to one another,

compassionate and forgiving, just as Christ has

forgiven us. What can we do this week to show

our kindness, compassion and forgiving

attitude toward others in our family of faith?

How can we be even better stewards of our

faith community as, what St. Paul refers to as

“Imitators of God?”

LIVING YOUR STRENGTHS

The Blessing of the Themes

We are continuing to explore the gift and genius that is present in each of the Signature Themes of

Talent as explored in Living Your Strengths. Watch for those in your top five themes!

The blessing of Self-Assurance:

The blessing of your Self-Assurance talent begins with your confidence. You have a quality that is often

called resilience. This means that you can “bounce back.” Accordingly, you have an attitude that no

matter what happens to you, you will in fact, “bounce back” and quite probably reach higher heights

even if you momentarily fail. The blessing is that you not only have confidence but an inner compass for

deciding what you need to do and how you need to do it. How do you use your Self-Assurance strength

in service of God and others?

Altar servers for 10:30 Mass at the

Westside. We would like to train a couple more

adults and older youths (6th grade and up) to lead

a team of servers once a month. If you are inter-

ested please come to one of the following training

sessions: Monday, August 13, Tuesday August

14. 6:30 – 8:00.

Giving Bus Collection

Please help us serve students who need

school supplies by putting your donations in

the bus downtown or the tubs at the

Westside. Cash donations are also gratefully

accepted. They can be clearly marked “Giving

Bus” and placed in the collection or dropped

off at the Parish Office. Thank you – your gen-

erosity will make a big difference in making

the school year successful for many children.

Smiling People for St. Vincent's:

Today

Have you ever noticed that every once in a

while there are a few smiling people in the

gathering space after Mass, holding a basket

and sign that says St. Vincent de Paul? They

are members of either the St. Vincent de Paul

Society or the mass hospitality team. Either

way, they are accepting donations for the St.

Vincent de Paul Society. These donations fund

St. Vincent's mission of helping people who

need a little help. Sometimes someone needs

help making a rent or utility payment.

Sometimes someone needs money for the bus

or to buy medical prescriptions.

Donations are collected after Mass once a

month, but people come to St. Vincent's

everyday looking for help. Please be generous

in your support for St. Vincent's to help fund

them for the entire month. Donations can also

be delivered directly to their office during

office hours, 1:00-3:00pm Monday - Friday.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society and their

clients thank you for your ongoing and

prayerful support.

Men's Homeless Shelter

Always Needs Warm Clothes

St. Michael Parish hosts a Men's Homeless Shelter for

four months during the winter. On the nights that our

shelter is open, the men are served a hot dinner and

have a warm place to sleep. Then, during the day they

are back out in the cold and rain of a typical Olympia

winter day. We try to prepare them for the next day

by providing them with things to wear that are

weather appropriate like gloves, hats, and sweatshirts.

We also provide underwear and socks when possible

because cold, wet, or dirty clothes are pretty

miserable. Donations of any of these types of items are

gladly accepted all year round to stock up for the

winter. You can bring them to John Terranova in the

parish office. Feel free to call John in the office at

292-7108 with any questions or issues or to learn

more about the homeless shelter. Thank you for your

continued support.

JustFaith Information Night August 30th at 7:00 PM in Gathering Space Room 2.

This is an opportunity to come and ask questions and learn more about Just Faith and Engaging

Spirituality.

JustFaith is an educational experience, a formation

process and a spiritual journey. Over the course of 30

weeks, participants gather weekly for prayer, discus-

sion of books and videos, presentations by guest

speakers, retreats, and immersion experiences. The

intent is to provide a tapestry of learning opportuni-

ties that emphasize and enliven the remarkable justice

tradition of the Church. Participants become a small

faith community with other participants and share a

journey of faith and compassion that is both life-giving

and challenging.

JustFaith will be offered at St. Michael Parish

starting in September. Call John Terranova in the

parish office at 292-7108 for more information

about JustFaith at St. Michael.

How to Celebrate Mass

with a Child with Special Needs

It’s important for parents of children with dis-

abilities to remember that they have a right and

a duty to carve out sacred space for themselves.

Many things change in the aftermath of having a

special-needs child; some things do not. First

and foremost—God still loves you, and you still

have a need for intimacy with the Divine. These

words of Saint Augustine are still true: “My heart

is restless, and it will not rest till it rests in

Thee!”

Okay, so what can you do to keep your sanity

during Mass when your whole focus seems to

have shifted to damage control and putting out

fires? Here are some suggestions.

Position in the pew.

For starters, I recommend that the child who is

disabled sit in between both parents so he or she

can’t wander away. Maintain physical contact in

the pew, including deep pressure or whatever

sensory input tends to calm your child. Keep the

immediate environment clear of objects that

could be thrown, torn, tapped, or tossed. Keep

your youngest nondisabled child next to one of

you so that he or she does not feel neglected. “How to Celebrate Mass with a Child with Special Needs” by David

Looking back at my YMP experience, I

realize that I have learned so many

things. One in particular, is how grate-

ful I should be because even though

my family has had their struggles and I

haven’t been able to get some of the

things I want, the migrant people feel

so blessed just to get a used pair of

shoes or clothes. Not only did I wit-

ness incredible gratitude that the mi-

grant people had, I also was inspired

by their children. On the day that my work group was able to

go and play at the camp, I met an eleven year old girl named

Adrianna. After playing basketball, we were talking and she

told me that she had already started working. As she was tell-

ing me about her job, I was amazed how even though she was

so young, she didn’t complain once. She was so happy just to

be able to do something to contribute to the family. While

writing this, I have had trouble because honestly there are no

words to describe YMP. As I think about it, all I can say is that

we might have helped the migrant people, but they also

helped us in so many ways and I am so grateful to be able to

have gone on this life changing experience.

Thank You from Russia!

Fr. Sebastian, pastor of Our Lady of the Pacific

Parish in Nahodka, Russia, thanked everyone at

VBS who created the “Angelus” prayer banner.

Here is a small piece of his thank you:

As Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta India

said "something beautiful for God". I and our

parishioners prayed last Sunday for each one

of the kids who did this picture and including

the teachers and others who helped them

and who gave them advise.
