A Message from President Kamas I love this time of year-the excitement of a new schoolyear, the anticipation of meet-ing new students, the redesignof bulletin boards and class-rooms, catching up with friendsand colleagues and all that goeswith the start of school. There isa buzz in the air - it is so ener-gizing!

After a very busy summer of deliveringand aending professional development, it feltgood to be back at work, ocially. The STATboard spent nearly a week in Albuquerque,NM at the National Congress on Science Edu-cation hosted by NSTA, where the focus wasthe Next Generation Science Standards. DuringCongress, we met several times as a board tocontinue our work on the STAT Strategic Plan. You have a hard-working board, dedicated tomaking STAT an organization that serves sci-ence educators well. We have several excitingevents in the works for our members, beyond

our yearly conference. Stay tuned-in to yourSTATellites and STATashes for details!

Speaking of the Next Generation ScienceStandards (NGSS), the second draft is currentlyunderway. You may wonder how that aectsyou. The easy answer is that the NGSS will notaect you directly, but there will be compo-nents that Texas science educators can use andlearn from. In my opinion, the more important

document for Texas is The Framework for K-12Science Education. This document created thefoundation for writing the new standards andshould serve as a research-based guide for

teaching and learning science and engineering. The Framework provides a description of thecontent and a sequence of learning, but youwont see specics in the Framework. What youwill see are three dimensions in which scienceeducation should be built around. The rst di-mension is scientic and engineering practices, the second is crosscuing concepts, and thethird being the core ideas in physical, earth andspace, life, and engineering, technology, andapplications of science. Crosscuing conceptswill be familiar to most teachers since we haveused unifying concepts for many years now.The crosscuing concepts are very similar. Do

systems, paerns, models, structure or functionsound familiar? Those are a few of the crosscut-ting concepts that are also present in the TEKS.The practices are similar to our current processskills. See if you can nd a few process skillsfound in the TEKS such as use models, analyzeand interpret data, construct reasonable conclu-sions, plan and implement investigations, askquestions, in the Framework practices listedbelow:

Framework Practices1. Asking questions (for science) and deningproblems (for engineering)2. Developing and using models3. Planning and carrying out investigations4. Analyzing and interpreting data5. Mathematics and computational thinking6. Constructing explanations (for science) anddesigning solutions (for engineering)

    7. Engaging in argument from evidence8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicatinginformation

Message from the President(contd. from page 6)

I have found that the Framework providesmore detail and elaboration than the TEKS, butthere are many similarities. The last dimensionincludes the core ideas in each of the disciplines, physical, earth and space, life, and engineering, technology, and the applications of science. Thesecore ideas are meant to develop over time. Noticethe emphasis on engineering and technology in thepractices and in the core ideas. You will hear much

more about the Framework and the NGSS as theyear progresses. You can download a free copy ofthe Framework from the National Academies Press

atwww.nap.edu. Another great resource for geingfamiliar with the Framework is The NSTAs Guideto A Framework for K-12 Science Education By Har-

old Pra, available atwww.nsta.org/ngss. The sec-ond draft of the Next Generation Science Standardsis due out for public comment in late fall. STAT has

taken an active role in participating in the publiccomment process.

On November 8th, 2012, Corpus Christi willwelcome enthusiastic science educators from allover the state of Texas for another fantastic CAST.The eld trips look sensational this year, well worthyour time and there are many great speakers andpresentations planned. Are you ready to Get YourGeek On? Registration opens again on August15th. The CAST app was popular last year, but lookfor the new and improved app this year.

It may seem early, but CAST 2013 in Houstonis already in the works. If you have never served ona CAST commiee, it is not too late. All you need todo is e-mail and let me know. We will also have aCAST Kicko Party on September 15th for all whowant to be a part of making history. Dont miss it!Serving on the CAST Planning Commiee is greatfun. Musings of a Board MemberBy Kiki Corry, STAT Member-at-Large

I would like to thank you forelecting me to represent you on the STATBoard of Directors. As a board member-at-large (not a large board member thatsentirely dierent), my responsibilities areto participate on commiees and duties asassigned. It is an honor and duty that I donot take lightly.

I thought you might like to knowwhat I have done since I took oce. I host-

ed the annual international Project WILD Coordinators meet-ing which took place in Galveston that very week this year. Ido hope I represented Texas educators with your passion andexpertise so that my counterparts from around the countrywent home saying, Those Texans really do know their scienceand how to teach it! I aended the STAT Board meeting at theNational Congress for Science Education which was hosted byNSTA. We have an active, enthusiastic, and solidly grounded

board focusing on both long-range strategic goals as well as theshort-term, immediate work of preparing for CAST 2012 in Cor-pus Christi. (Get Your Geek On!)

In addition to meetings, I facilitated the writing of theTexas Natural Resources/ Environmental Literacy Plan. Thisplan will focus, support, and coordinate eorts across the stateto help Texans understand and appreciate the natural systemsthat make Texas so great. I also aended the NSTA/NSELASummer Leadership Institute in Austin. Science educators and

educational leaders came from all over the country to learnabout the Next Generation Science Standards and A Frame-work for K-12 Science Education. While Texas will always haveour own standards and assessments, these two new documents with their research-based backbone will denitely inuencescience teaching in the future.

Please view me as a resource. I work at a science-richagency with resources and biologists I only dreamt of whenI was in the classroom. Education is mission-critical at Texas

A Framework for K 12 ScienceEducation has Arrived!

By Kevin Fisher, TSELA Past President

Implementation of the 2010 Science TexasEssential Knowledge and Skills has brought severalchallenges to science educators as they meet therequirements of the document. The science processesare expected to be integrated with science contentthroughout the lesson. Student expectations are morerigorous than in previous documents. Educators haveto prepare students for success on the STAAR assess-

ment. Not to mention, students need to receive a 21stCentury science education.

The National Research Council has recentlypublished A Framework for K -12 Science Education. The framework is designed to provide resources tomove all science education into the 21st century. Thevision is that over multiple years of school, studentswill be actively engaged in science and engineeringpractices, apply cross cuing concepts, and deepen

their understanding of core ideas in science and en-gineering elds. The vision also promotes two majorgoals for science education: (1) educating all studentsin science and engineering and (2) providing foun-dational knowledge for those who will become thescientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians ofthe future.

The framework has three dimensions: (1)Science and Engineering practices that are used to

establish, extend, and rene knowledge. The prac-tices are to be integrated with content. (2) Crosscut-ting concepts that are fundamental to understandingthe dierent disciplines and serve as unifying themeswithin and across disciplines. (3) Disciplinary CoreIdeas that represent the essential knowledge in eacharea.

The framework has several guiding prin-ciples: (1) Children are born investigators. (2) A

limited number of core ideas to allow for deep un-derstanding. (3) Understanding develops over time.(4) Science and engineering require knowledge andpractice. (5) Connecting to students interests andexperiences. (6) Promoting equity.

The beginning of this article focuses on someof the challenges in the implementation of the TexasScience Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Fromthe brief overview of the framework that has beenpresented, it should be apparent that the frameworkand TEKS documents have complementary goals. Sci-ence educators in Texas should view the frameworkas a viable resource to enhance science presentations

in classrooms across the state. The document allowseducators to easily access to research based practicesand resources that will increase student comprehen-sion and involvement in science and engineering.

In the near future look for information fromthe Texas Science Education Leadership Associa-tion (TSELA) and the Science Teachers Associationof Texas (STAT) that will enable science educatorsto seamlessly integrate the frameworks into science

instruction. The framework is a resource that can beadded to your toolkit that will assist in developmentof exemplary science lessons.

Summer Science in BelizeBy Lynn Seman

Who said that teachers take the summer o? Not me!This summer I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participatein a research project in Belize with a wonderful group of Math andScience teachers through the Texas Tech University MS2 program.

Eleven teachers from allover Texas spent 10 days re-searching coral reef sh spe-cies thanks to a grant from the

Greater Texas Foundation andTexas Tech. We were investi-gating whether the Hol Chan Marine Reserve is actually making adierence for sh species conservation. During the 10-day trip, wesnorkeled areas outside of the reserve and then similar areas insidethe reserve along the 2nd longest reef in the world, the Belize Bar-rier Reef which is part of the Mesoamerican reef. While snorkeling,we counted our assigned sh species including parrotsh, angelsh, grunts, and many more species.

Currently, we are working on the dataanalysis part of the research project with theexpert guidance of Dr. Mark McGinley, Associ-ate Professor of Biology with Texas Tech Hon-ors College. We were able to experience realscience rsthand and participate in an excitingnight snorkel, night seining, and meet local chil-dren from the area. Some of the highlights of thetrip include swimming with nurse sharks andstingrays, holding an octopus, witnessing sea

turtles grazing on turtle grass, a visit from a podof dolphins, and collaborating with each otheron actual research techniques.

As we work on our reports from the trip,we are still in amazement from all that we ex-perienced from this life-changing experience. What beer way to spend time o this summer?

To read more about the adventures the MS2

team had in Belize, check out the blog.

As science teachers you play a vital role in educating stu-dents about our natural resources and the complex processes thatcreate healthy ecosystems. As an informal educator and board mem-ber of the Informal Science Education Association, a STAT aliate,I depend on your eorts and value the partnership that we share increating science literate citizens. Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) isoering resources to assist you in the task of understanding Texaswater, our most valuable natural resource.

Over the past six years, TPWD has produced The State ofWater documentary series exploring the crucial issues facing wa-ter for Texas, including allocations for wildlife and aquatic habitats. This series was shown on PBS stations around the state. Our recentdrought, continued population growth, and increasing demands onlimited water resources make this topic more important than ever. Inan eort to continue to utilize these wonderful documentaries andeducate others about these issues, we are encouraging schools to use

these videos in their classrooms and in extended learning opportuni-ties such as after-school clubs and family science movie nights.

Videos include: Texas: The State of Water, Finding a Balance, The State of Springs, TheState of Flowing Water, and The State of the Gulf: Americas Sea.

The State of Water Video Screening Toolkit is available on-line to assist you in using videos orhosting a screening. The toolkit has questions to encourage discussion and Save Water For Wildlifepledge cards to encourage wise water use by the participants following the screening. The toolkit in-cludes llable publicity yers and a media release to make publicizing the event a snap.

If you arent familiar with the videos, learn more at the website: http://www.texasthestateowater.org/ The latest video, The State of the Gulf: Americas Sea can be seen on the website. The State ofWater Video Screening Toolkit and related forms can be found at http://www.texasthestateowater.org/screening/index.php

Interested? Contact Cappy Smith at [email protected] or 512-389-8060 for additionalinformation or to receive the videos. There is no charge for the videos, but supplies are limited. Mosthigh school libraries already have the set so please check rst. Only one set per campus.

[A] gripping and important lm for anyone who cares about the

future of public education.-Chris Vognar, The Dallas Morning News

with Director, Sco ThurmanFriday, November 9th - 5:30 PM

American Bank Center Level 1, Selena Auditorium

My fth grade science teacher created this energy, sparking my imagination and interest in sci-ence and so I sought to produce a short portrait of a science teacher in Texas thats also moving

minds with an intense and electrifying message. At the time, I discovered a survey stating that

half of the American public did not accept the theory of evolution and so I decided to focus my

lm on a Biology teacher and the lessons on evolution.

    -Scott Thurman, Director

The goal ofTHE REVISIONARIES is to illuminate the politi-

cal wrangling behind the board that has gone on since

the 80s, and bring attention to this largely overlooked,

yet vitally important group of people. The Texas State

Board of Education is a modern, moral battleground in

the national debate between conservatives and liber-

als in this country. THE REVISIONARIES gives a face and a

    personality to these political ghts.

Fifteen people inuence what is taught to the next

generation of American children. Once every decade, thehighly politicized Texas State Board of Education rewrites

the teaching and textbook standards for its nearly 5

million schoolchildren. Texas is ground zero for the text-

book wars across the country. Our lm confronts the

critical issue and key players in the Texas State Board of

Educations textbook standards revision process and how

this impacts the entire US education system.
