NIC NOTES Dear Parishioners,
Over the next few Nic Notes, I am going to speak about what a parish is to be, and how we - each one of us - can make our parish even bet-ter. Parishioners expect to feel a true sense of owner-ship when it comes to their parish. One’s parish is more than just a place where you go to Mass. A par-ish is a sacred place where we humans and the di-vine meet. It is a place where people of all ages, from the very young to the “more mature,” grow in the knowledge and understanding of what it means to be a follower of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The par-ish is also to be a place where we, the parishioners, receive spiritual nourishment, guidance, inspiration, and strength. We receive these “gifts,” not just from the priests, but also from one another. A parish is to be a spiritual home for each and every one of us - a sacred “space” where we can share in each other’s joys, support each other in times of sorrow, offer encouragement to those who are struggling, and be present to help and to heal those who feel battered or broken by the tragedies and trials of life. The parish is also to be a place that is social - where we can make new friends and reach out to those who are less fortunate. The parish is a place where we invite others to become part of our community of believers who strive to live the Gospel. Our parish is alive and well; yet, we need always to strive to be all that God wants us to be. When you take ownership in your parish in the fullest sense by your active interest, we grow and prosper. We have our Time & Talent Weekend and send out a Parish Resource Booklet for the purpose of getting more parishioners involved. When we see the parish for what it truly is, we do become more welcoming and alive. Remember the Assumption, August 15th, is a Holy Day of Obligation. May God through the intercession of St. Helena bless us!
Love and Prayers,
Msgr. Nicolo
Rev. Raju Pilla Visit
Next weekend, at all masses, Rev. Raju Pilla will be speaking about the works and needs of the Latin Archdiocese of Trivandrum in India. Trivan-drum has about 270,000 Catholics. 90% of the people are traditional fishermen who depend on fishing for their livelihood and 10% are farm work-ers who are recent converts from low-caste Hindus. “Harvest is plentiful but Laborers are few!” Unem-ployment and poverty are most rampant in this com-munity. The Archdiocese depends on outside assis-tance to support its clergy, seminarians, and Cate-chists and to continue its Spiritual, Educational, and Economic developmental programs for the Commu-nity. Many coastal villages of the Archdiocese are still struggling to recover from the recent Tsunami devastation that destroyed many lives, homes, and fishing equipment. We are making progress! One of our challenges is to find ongoing assistance with food and lodging to support the poorest students who are admitted in our two special High Schools that were established after the Tsunami. Won’t you be as generous as you can in the Mission Envelope, collected along with the regular collection? Your sacrifice for the Missions is very much appreciated and may God bless you.
Looking forward to visiting with you, Yours gratefully I am, Rev. Raju B. Pilla, Mission Rep.
N.B. Your Mission envelopes will be collected with the 1st and only collection at each Mass.

CATHE’S CORNER
KEN’S CACHE Over the summer we have seen an uptick in the number of people who have requested to be assigned a Stephen Minister. Since being named a Stephen Ministry Parish, we have had the opportunity to minister to individuals with various forms of personal needs that were dealt with spiritually in concert with a Stephen Minister. However, quite often, we find that many individuals feel it is a burden on others to ask for help during a time of anxiety or anguish or pain because of illness, the death of a loved one, or a financial problem. Our ministers are trained to walk spiritually with individuals during those trying periods and we have received grateful thanks from many individuals as a result of the time spent with their Stephen Minister. Please use this resource if you find yourself dealing with the myriad issues that can affect each of us. God graces us with the help we need in many different ways. Closing the door to that help denies the very act of love that God freely gives. Jesus said, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” When the need for a Stephen Minister arises, please call the rectory or Deacon Ken, and we will promptly get back to you. God Bless! Deacon Ken
Madeleine’s Message The main goal of the Saint Helena Parish Religious Education is to help our children know how much God loves them, and to help them to develop a strong person-al relationship with Jesus.
Here at Saint Helena we try to do this by:
teaching about Jesus and about God’s relationship with us through the study of the Scriptures,
teaching the children about prayer, and helping them learn how to pray,
teaching the children about the Church and the Sacra-ments,
helping the children to grow in faith and to celebrate their faith through life experience day by day. Have a great week! Madeleine
