To capture a day in the life in ourcommunity

took a fair bit of planning, a little intuition with a camera and a lot of co-operation from the subjects in the following pages. Our goal was to capture moments of the day in and around Trail in hopes that we see a bit of ourselves in some of these photos as people go about their everyday chores, treats and recreation. With that in mind we dispatched three photographers – editor Guy Bertrand, news reporters Val Rossi and Sheri Regnier – over the course of 16 hours on August 7.Getting a broad range of photos from one single day was no easy task. We sat down and plotted out our day with one photographer capturing the early risers who are at work, exercising or out and about long before most of us hit the snooze button.Another photographer tackled the hectic late-morning/early-afternoon shift that featured everything from having lunch to shopping at the market to taking a break from a

busy day. However, to truly capture a day in the life of our area, we had Trail Times photographers roaming the spots that are so vital to a great day in the Kootenays.Be it fishing in a quiet creek or relaxing in a vineyard, Kootenay people know the best way to spend a day is doing something you love. And if it happens to be outside, that’s even better. That’s why there are as many photos of people at play as there are people at work.Because if there’s one thing for sure in our region, a day in the life often includes a bit of work and a bit of play.Anything less wouldn’t be a com-plete day.We hope you enjoy our whirlwind efforts. I know we sure enjoyed bringing it all together.

The Rossland Avenue resident decorated signs to attract passersby and when a customer stopped in, she had all the baby essentials in reach to keep her little one busy so she could make a sale.

Daniel Haley, owner of Casa di Cioccolato in downtown Trail, may be the friendliest man in the city. If his free bike rides or community bench outside of his shop don’t stop foot traffic, his beautiful flowerpots will. He stopped to pick a flower for one-year-old Giselle Paakkunainen, who was mostly confused by his gesture.

Our Focus on the Future at Teck Trail Operations

Groundwater Treatment Plant:Site preparation and pipe installation work continues at the Groundwater Treatment Plant construction site. The plant is part of our overall groundwater remediation plan, which addresses groundwater affected by the site’s historical activities.

A series of wells between Teck Trail Operations and the Columbia River will intercept the affected groundwater, which will then be treated at the plant prior to discharge into the river.

Family Day Fun: On June 28, 2015, Teck Trail Operations hosted a Family Day. Employees hosted their families onsite to show the process behind making zinc, lead, fertilizer and other metal and chemical products, as well as some family fun with the Vancouver Aquarium Aquavan and Science World on the Road.

At left, Caleb Wright, son of Andrew Wright, Assistant Chief Engineer, takes a turn behind the wheel of the fire truck. At right, Jonathan and Katherine Mozel, children of Mark Mozel, Superintendent, Projects, practice their hammering skills as they learn about the carpentry trade.

Improving Community Air Quality: Construction on the Smelter Recycle Building is well under way, as Ken Madson, Clark Builders Superintendent, and Brian Marsh, Teck Lead Projects Superintendent, review drawings. The building will enclose mixing and storage of in-process materials, reducing total fugitive dust emissions from Trail Operations by an estimated 25%. The building is part of our overall Fugitive Dust Reduction program. The program is showing initial success, with community air metal results for the first three months of 2015 the lowest for that time period in eight years.

Trail Operations
