Indy: Healing Begins For a genre and format that prides itself on community, the sense of loss from Saturday’s Indiana State Fair tragedy (8/13) is widely felt. At the same time, the opportunity for aid and action seized within moments of the event will surely spread in a way that will only increase this industry’s unique bonds. Country Aircheck contacted three who were there for their thoughts and recollections. WLHK PD Bob Richards: “The State Fair people were consulting with the Indiana State Police and others about how to proceed with a storm on the way. July PPM: Hot Music, Big Tours “I can’t remember a time in the format when the music has been hotter, and that includes the early ‘90s,” Greater Media’s WKLB/Boston PD Mike Brophey boldly tells Country Aircheck. His comments come in the wake of ‘KLB’s outstanding July book, in which it climbed 6.4-7.1, matching its best ever PPM share while also reaching an all-time cume high of 846,000. “Every song is a big song,” says Brophey, “and it starts there.” The recent music movement that so many PDs are talking about seems to be a key reason Country can be declared the (continued on page 4)

hands-down winner in July PPMs. Fifty-four stations increased share, 35 decreased and 11 were flat compared to June’s numbers. Clear Channel’s KEEY/Minneapolis was another big July winner, jumping 9.2-9.6 and reaching its all-time cume high in the process. PD Gregg Swedberg agrees with Brophey’s assessment of the music, citing a current crop of “uptempo, fun, yet meaningful songs.” “Uptempo” is the operative word for Swedberg, who observes that when the music goes that way, Country enjoys success. “This was the case in the early ‘90s, and it’s the case now,” he says. “We tend to lag when we slow it down and try to super-serve one piece of our audience, which has traditionally been women 40+.” Brophey also cites a busy touring season as another important component to WKLB’s summer success. “This year has been especially strong with six Comcast Center shows; Gillette Stadium brought us two Taylor shows, and two Chesney shows are coming up. That’s a lot of country fans, and that success represents what is happening on our station.” Having programmed in PPM methodology for two-and-a-half years now, Brophey shares this observation about contesting and promotion: “As we have heard, the less talk, the better. Promotions and contesting had better be interesting to the masses. And I don’t mean just the prizes; the execution needs to be compelling if it’s taking the place of a song. But we’ve had decent success with concert tickets. They are hot, and people love to win them.” The July PPM survey covered a time in Pittsburgh when Taylor Swift and Kenny Chesney both played Heinz Field. CBS Radio’s WDSY appears to have greatly benefited, improving 6.2-7.1for its best book since Aug. 2010. And that’s how ‘DSY PD Mark Anderson sees it: “Having two huge, jam-packed shows within two weeks of each other at Heinz Field generated a tremendous amount of excitement and interest in the format.” Country radio has long suffered the lack of external marketing, making the national TV exposure from American Idol, The Apprentice and, most recently, The Voice especially important. Perhaps Brophey put it best when he says, “Country is the best self-marketing format out there, and that has been the icing on the cake. People are searching us out, and liking what they find.”

Off The recOrd: eric Paslay

EMI Nashville’s Eric Paslay gives an industry spin on the artist interview:Which station did you grow up listening to? WACO/Waco, TX. Enjoyed any destinations on your radio tour above others? What I’ve realized is there are country fans everywhere. Growing up in the South, you always think they’re only in the South, but there’s beautiful farm country and ranches up north, too. Do you remember the first time you

heard yourself on the radio? We were on a bridge going over the Bay in Tampa and heard “Never Really Wanted.” It was pretty incredible. I’ll be forever grateful for them for playing it. Trudie Daniell had her phone out videoing me as it came on.How do you adjust to all the travel? You just have to realize what you’re getting to do. Yeah, it can wear you out, but what an incredible journey! Hopefully, I’m meeting friends I’ll have for the rest of my life at Country radio. I’m looking forward to looking back 20 years from now and saying, “Remember that first time I came in?” What is your go-to food stop? I’m not very picky. I like spicy food, but I’m pretty much open to anything as long as it’s not moving too much. What truck stop food tempts you? Slim Jims. But when I’m in Texas, there’s a Czech pastry called a kolache. My favorite is a poppy seed kolache. If I could open up a kolache kitchen in Nashville, I would. Think of the sweetest roll you’ve ever had and then the filling is poppy seed or apricot. It’s incredible stuff. What are some good icebreakers you use for the radio tour? Looking like a giant leprechaun? If you could get stuck in any city other than home, which would it be and why? Any city that has great fishing. Are you a prankster? I like comic relief. I’m just usually goofy. I usually don’t plan anything. Who have you seen live that you’ve tried to emulate or borrow ideas from? I try to be me, but the Keith Urban show with Jake Owen the other night in Nashville was just incredible. It’s cool that Keith doesn’t keep a fence between himself and the fans.

Oct. 6-7 at New York City’s Joe’s Pub. Former Trailer Choir vocalist Crystal Hoyt will host the free weekly songwriter showcase Renegade Junction beginning tomorrow (8/16) in The Attic at Nashville’s Piranhas (113 2nd Ave. N). New talent will be featured, and Hoyt will premiere new music during the six-week series. Toby Keith, Lady Antebellum, Zac Brown Band, Brad Paisley and the Secret Sisters are the International Act nominees for Oct. 23’s British Country Music Awards. Paul Yandell, longtime bandleader for Chet Atkins, was presented with the fifth and final Atkins-bestowed “Certified Guitar Player” at the opening of the Chet Atkins exhibit at the Country Music Hall Of Fame.

towards the buses. By the time I looked back, it was completely down. “The dust was still blowing up, and the storm was blowing in as I was walking back toward the stage, but there were crew and security people yelling, ‘Live power! Live wires! Cut the power!

Hahr discusses her most influential songs, albums and concerts:1. Johnny Lee/Looking for Love: When all of the kids were watching cartoons, my mom would put on Urban Cowboy. I’ve always been a hardcore country fan – some may call me a redneck.2. John Anderson, Dollywood: My first concert. We were on a family vacation and I know now that we barely had the

money for park tickets, but when dad saw that John Anderson was playing, I think he used the rest of his paycheck. I remember being so close, I told dad, “I can see the grey in his beard!”3. K92FM’s 15th Birthday Bash, WWKA/Orlando: I had just gotten my internship there during my first semester at college. In the green room, a shy guy with a Marlins baseball hat and glasses came up by himself and quietly asked, “Did you want a picture with me? I’m Kenny.”4. Jason Aldean/Why: The first No. 1 record I worked. I’ll never forget the passion and intensity that went along with giving Jason his first No. 1. Our BBR team was magical; the love for the artist, the music, and for radio was unstoppable. I remember Jon Loba, Shelley Hargis, and I literally group hugging and jumping up and down in circles in my office. 5. WPAW/Greensboro’s Home Town Hand Shake Concerts: They put on shows in tiny towns within their hot zips. Justin Moore was the first show on a tractor trailer bed on a baseball field. That night was the first time I heard a crowd sing “Small Town USA” word-for-word. I stood in the back of that field with tears streaming down my face.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: I’ll get a lot of crap for this, but I’ve honestly never heard a Rolling Stones album, a Motley Crue album or any of the older rock stuff. My dad would actually smack our hands if we tried to change from the Country station in his truck. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: I have tremendous respect for what the Black Eyed Peas did for their format, but their performances on awards shows scare the crap out of me! • An album you played or listened to incessantly: Shania’s Come On Over was my college anthem album.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Anouk “Lost.” Heard it on So You Think You Can Dance, where I learn all of my non-country music. Get back!’ They were motioning us away, so I turned back toward the infield and went to my car parked on the other side, knowing the sky was about to open up and that was the only shelter I would be able to reach. “At that point, I was thinking about where my staff was. As I was making the announcement, we had three people standing stage-left who all decided at about that time to leave. By divine providence, they had the instinct to move before the storm got there. But I didn’t know that, so I was calling and texting, as were a lot of people, and it was difficult to get connected. That was a long 10 minutes of confirming all our people were safe and letting my wife know I was okay. “Ernie Mills, who does afternoons for us, is also an outstanding photographer and he was in the photo pool by the soundboard. Because he’s also a nature photographer, he was the only guy with the presence of mind, knowing he’d have a storm coming through, to use a wide-angle lens. If you’ve seen any images from in front of the stage, they’re probably his [erniemillsphotography.com]. “Once I confirmed our staff was okay, I got my first minor wave of relief, and then we went into full coverage mode. [Market Manager] Charlie Morgan was there, and he’s whom I heard from first. Emmis affords us a fully staffed news department that’s as good or better than any other. They stayed on the air until about 2am after the final press conference wrapped. I stayed on-site until about 10pm, when my iPhone battery finally went into conservation mode. Charlie was on-site until midnight. “On Sunday, we made sure everything on the station was appropriate for the situation and began running a message every hour with our thoughts and prayers for the victims and our thanks to the heroes who ran back in. We covered the Monday memorial service live on our News/Talk station and recycled everyone over from Hank. A lot of our coverage has been giving people a chance to express their emotions. There’s been no contesting, no morning show bits. As the healing really starts, we’ll move back to regular programming. “The State Fair is planning a memorial fund, and our plan is to very soon partner with them on a fundraising effort. Our hearts are just broken for all of the victims, the families and the injured. It still makes my heart sink. And my heart also breaks for Kristian,

Jennifer and the band. Everyone was there to see them, and they just wanted to perform and give everyone a wonderful event, so I can’t imagine what they’re going through. My heart goes out to them and their entire organization. “Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers for the foreseeable future because this going to take awhile to heal.” WFMS PD Mark Hamlin: “We’ve got Jerrod Niemann here tonight [Monday] on the free stage, which is in a different location from the grandstand stage. He’s about to go on. It’s one of those situations where ... what do you say? “My family just moved here from Kansas City. We just drove in Saturday and this was our first event together as a family. We were in the 17th row directly in front of the stage. I knew the sky was getting dark, and when the announcement came from the stage I knew something was wrong. It was like slow motion. There didn’t seem to be a sense of urgency, but I stood up with my family and said, ‘Let’s move back.’ Then it started to blow. I saw the four spot guys up in the rigging and watched them ride that thing down. It’s one of those things you don’t ever expect to see. It almost doesn’t seem real. It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life. “My wife is a nurse, and we came upon a lady who apparently was having a heart attack. We got the authorities to her, and before we knew it, the first responders were all over the scene and it was time for us to get out of the way and go home. I was communicating on cell and found out that everybody from the station was okay. It was pandemonium. “We met at the station Sunday, put condolence messages from the airstaff on the air and saluted the first responders and the fans who jumped in and lifted scaffolding. Those people saved lives that night. We had the morning show at the memorial service and carried it live. Plans are in the works across the Cumulus platform of Country stations to do a benefit. “The country community is just awesome, and we’ve already got messages on the air from artists including Toby Keith and Jason Aldean. And if anyone else wants to get their thoughts out here, they can just call me.

Deborah Allen Hear Me Now (Delta Rock) Country Music Hall of Famer Bobby Braddock produced Allen’s single “Anything Other Than Love,” as well as two more of the collection’s 12 tracks. Allen produced the rest.

Eli Young Band Life At Best (Republic Nashville) The group’s first gold-certified single “Crazy Girl” leads their 14-track album, which was recorded entirely at Franklin, TN’s Dark Horse studio. “There’s a continuity to this record because we tracked the entire album all at the same time,” Mike Eli says. “We lived in a cabin there, woke up,

went into the studio, recorded all day and then slept. It’s kind of the dream for us because it felt organic.” Lee Brice, Will Hoge and Eric Paslay have writer credits. Mike Wrucke and Frank Liddell produced.

“It’s such a horrible thing, but you see the best in people, too. And if there’s one thing you really learn, it’s that there is no playbook for this.” Mercury Midwest rep Charlie Dean: “I was on-site, but for the first time all year, I was not standing in front of or around the stage. I was actually delivering to the stations guitars that Sugarland had signed. When the dust storm hit, I was in the parking lot behind the backstage area trying to get a photo of the moon, which was out and full. I came around the backstage fence and saw the stage down. It was one of those moments where it takes a second to fully realize what you are looking at. You so don’t want to believe it. “Emergency personnel did an amazing job; they created a triage area in the grandstand and got help to people as quickly as they could. I heard several off-duty medical professionals offering to help, people lending a hand wherever they could. Looking at pictures today, I am struck by images of the fans lifting the stage off of those who were trapped. So very sad. ‘The whole world could change in a minute.’” CAC

It was a solid July for Country radio in PPM, with the majority of outlets registering 6+ ratings improvements and the format up 7.1% in total shares from June. Of the 100 stations in this report (mostly with a 1.0 share or greater 6+), 54 were up, 35 were down and 11 remained level. Nine stations set new share records, and the “Book of the Month” went

to CBS Radio’s WIRK/West Palm Beach, which jumped 5.3-7.0, also a station record. Additional big gains were registered by CBS Radio’s WYCD/Detroit and Entercom’s WPAW/Greensboro, both of which climbed 6.4-7.7.
