For weeks now, people have been asking me to do a series of sermons on the book of Nehemiah so that they can better understand what the rebuilding of the Jerusalem has to do with our lives today.
Not really. The book of Nehemiah is one that many of us have never read; maybe we don’t even know where to find it in the Bible, and that’s ok (I had to look up the page number to find it myself).
And that’s why I am excited to share this sermon series with you all. This fall we’re going to learn how God moves in our lives to rebuild communities and change the world. For as Nehemiah teaches us, when we respond to God’s grace with faithfulness, prayer and praise, amazing things happen.
We’re going to invest nine weeks into this study, so I encourage to start reading the book of Nehemiah to prepare yourself for this series that God has laid on my heart.
Our study of Nehemiah starts on Rally Day, September 7th, when we kick off the fall together. Rally Day gives us all a great opportunity to invite our friends and neighbors to church with us and this sermon series on Nehemiah will speak to anyone, even if they’ve never been to church or haven’t come in years. We all have parts of our lives
that need to be rebuilt, we all have relationships that need to be strengthened and hopes that can be restored. This series on Nehemiah will strengthen our faith and encourage us to build our lives on the foundation of Christ’s love.
Who can you invite to join you in church on September 7th? Or would you consider posting a message on Facebook or Twitter where you invite your friends to join you? If you’re not sure what to say, I’d suggest something like, “If you don’t have a church family, I’d love for you to join me this weekend at Waterloo First.”
Amazing things are going to happen this fall and I can’t wait to see where God will lead us and how we will rebuild our lives and our church together.
Many of our Sunday School classes will begin meeting together again this fall as well and if you have not connected with a class yet, there’s no better time than now. Our nursery will be available during the Sunday School hour as well to make sure that any parent can be involved in a class. We’ve also got great Sunday School classes for children and youth, as well as confirmation, youth group, United Methodist Women, United Methodist Men, Bell Choir, Chancel Choir and more.
I am so excited for this fall and look forward to sharing it with you all.
Grace and peace,
Nate

Bible Verse: Deuteronomy 6: 4-9 (NIV)
Hear, O Israel: The Lord your God, the Lord is
one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your strength.
These commandments that I give you today are to
be upon our hearts. Impress them on you children.
Talk about them when you sit at home and when
you walk along the road, when you lie down and
when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your
hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write
them on the door frames of your houses and on your

Five of our Musicmania students from this spring’s African Drum Circle class will be performing Saturday, August 23 between 12:30 and 1:00. On Saturday, Aug. 17 the students from the spring drumming class met with students from Jubilee to practice for this event. They will practice again on Saturday, August 23 before performing in the afternoon.
We are once again partnering with UNI’s Drumming School, which is part of UNI’s Community Music School, and the parents and children of Irving Elementary. Transportation is being provided as needed.
This is another unique opportunity for our students to show case their talents!

A FUN WAY TO RAISE FUNDS
The six-member Church Coalition of the Waterloo Church Row neighborhood are in the process of organizing, planning, and pro-ducing a fundraiser to support two important organizations that are active in the Church Row neighborhood, Grin and Grow Child Care and The Job Foundation. The funds raised will be split be-tween them. Grin and Grow Child Care, founded in 1943, serves about 100 chil-dren in two centers in Waterloo and provides high quality child care to a diverse group of children from all around the communi-ty. Their programs allow each child to appreciate the best in oth-ers while discovering and developing their own unique interests. Many of their children are from lower-income working families. Grin and Grow makes sure those children are not ignored. Through a unique “scholarship” program and financial need as-sessment, Grin and Grow may award assistance on a sliding-scale to families that qualify. The Job (rhymes with robe) Foundation was founded in 2006 to teach children the importance of good money management. Their goal is to help children from disadvantaged families break out of the poverty cycle and to become financially self-sufficient by age 25. Children are enrolled in the program while in grade school and remain until graduating from high school. The fundraiser will consist of two programs both to be held No-vember 22, 2014 at the National Cattle Congress Grounds in Wa-terloo. One program is designed to be family-oriented and pro-vide an entertaining and fun experience for children and their parents. The other is designed for those who appreciate listening and dancing to a high-quality Iowa blues band. “Family Fun Fest” will take place at the National Cattle Congress Pavilion. It will feature inflatables, a balloon man, face painting artists, the ever-popular cake walk, and many other fun activities and attractions. “Blues Night Out” will be held nearby in the historic and nostalgic Electric Park Ballroom. Bob Dorr and the Blue Band will be fea-tured. Tickets will go on sale in late August but reservations can be taken now by going to our web pages. Be sure to save the date and “Like” us on Facebook.

Blue Zone® Blog Jessica Crouch
Every year children receive a supply list from school, yet we need to remember
some of the most important supplies to support a successful, healthy school
year. Do we get enough sleep each night? What space do you have in your house
conducive to homework and quiet time? Do your children have a balance of after
-school activities and free time? (I could ask myself the same question). Where does exercise fit in
that after-school time? So much to consider, and we have not even started discussing nutrition.
Whether you want a healthy school year, work year, summer, or any other time of life, I have found
several nutritional components that give us a much better chance. I like to start my day with a protein
packed breakfast. Remember – plant-slant eating habits will help us get the nutrients provided by
fruits and veggies (which also go well with breakfast). A quality multivitamin can help us fill the gaps
and provide our body with fuel to keep us running at optimum. If you want to take that a step further,
add some DHA for more brain power! Since kids tend to share everything, including germs, a little extra
immune support and a non-toxic disinfectant can provide another layer of protection. Hopefully these
ideas have started you thinking about the small steps you can take to make a big difference in the
health of you and your family.
Walking/ Biking
Moai
According to Rule number 9 in the Power of 9®, the Blue Zone guide to a
healthier life, the world’s longest lived people chose–or were born into–social
circles that supported healthy behaviors. Okinawans created ”moais”–groups of
five friends that committed to each other for life. Research from the
Framingham Studies shows that smoking, obesity, happiness, and even loneliness
are contagious. So the social networks of long-lived people have favorably
shaped their health behaviors.
Stay tuned for updates on walking opportunities. Staff and students at
Irving school meet to walk in the mornings and we hope to join them. As
school resumes we will keep you updated with more information.
