Glory to God in the Highest Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,

we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,

Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;

you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.

Amen.

Second Reading A Reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans

Brothers and sisters: I am speaking to you Gentiles.

Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry in order to make my race jeal-

ous and thus save some of them. For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the

world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. Just as you once disobeyed God but have now received mercy because of their

disobedience, so they have now disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you,

they too may now receive mercy. For God delivered all to disobedience,

that he might have mercy upon all.

L. The Word of the Lord R. Thanks be to God

Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salva-tion he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accord-ance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

First Reading A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Thus says the LORD: Observe what is right, do what is just;

for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed.

The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, ministering to him,

loving the name of the LORD, and becoming his servants—

all who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant,

them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer;

their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar,

for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.

ANIMA CHRISTI (Prayer after Communion) Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save

me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ,

strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within Thy wounds hide me. Separated from Thee let me never be. From the malignant enemy, defend me. At the hour of death, call me. And close to Thee bid me.

That with Thy saints I may be Praising Thee, forever and ever. Amen

PRAYER TO ST MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle,

be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.

May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host,

by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits

who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Homily from Parish Mass for Monsignor Gianelli Monsignor John Georgia, August 10, 2020

The late Terrence Cardinal Cooke of New York once said: “From the day of his ordination a priest can never forget that he has been called by God Himself. The priest is called to be a servant, victim, brother, listener and friend.”

Msgr. Gene, whom we honor with this Mass of the Resurrection was a true priest. His finest hours were spent in service to his parishioners. He taught us to see, know and love the smiling, laughing Jesus. In his career he held various Archdiocesan positions in ministry, one of which was secretary to Archbishop Whealon… and all that it entailed...(countless meetings, commissions, problem solving in various parishes and the list goes on). But his heart was always in the parish….mixing, mingling, teaching, preaching, celebrating with and bringing people closer to God. His life, as a priest was that rare and welcome blend of a servant, victim, broth-er, listener and friend. How Gene truly loved and enjoyed being a priest!! ….most especially his ministry in Most Holy Trinity Parish, Wallingford and here at Our Lady of the Assumption. This was never more evident than in his daily life and in his annual June dinner for priests held here in O. L. of the Assumption rectory. Af-ter a superb meal, he would conclude the evening with his praise of God and gratitude for the gift of the priest-hood. In this he knew he was richly blessed by God. This was ALSO his kind YET GENTLE way of letting US know the party was over…time to go home!! Blunt, direct when necessary, but polite. In his ministry, he never failed to remind people of their calling to be saints. Not saints, in some mystical, super-human way. No, he re-minded us that to be a saint, God calls us to be fully human….compassionate, practical, understanding, loving, giving and forgiving, gentle and humble….yet courageous. Here, Fr. Gene touched many hearts. He never for-got the average person in the pew and beyond.

Just the other night, the parking attendant at Portofino’s restaurant in New Haven asked me (as I was leaving), Where is your friend? I said (thinking he meant Msgr. Gary) he just left ahead of me. No, I mean your other friend. I told him, sadly, he had passed away. He felt so badly. He said, “I really liked him!” Gene always took time to say hello, speak with him. He never forgot the average person. To me, that is the mark of greatness.

Throughout his public ministry Jesus spoke and taught using parables. You know, stories by which to illustrate his teachings. Msgr. Gene was also a gifted story-teller. He was never at a loss for words. He didn’t speak in parables, but OHH were his stories entertaining!! At our Friday evening dinners, most frequently at Portofino’s in New Haven, Msgr. Gene would regale Msgr. Gary and me for hours with his animated tales. (I think we can remember some of them more readily than some of the parables of Jesus. Please, don’t tell the AB. This will be our guarded secret.)

Msgr. Gene was an exceptional “Listener”. Again, this was never more evident than in his concern for his brother priests. If he heard Fr. X was having a difficult time, Fr. Gene was calling him on the phone. If sick, he was at their hospital bedside…..in addition to sending cards, notes, or plants. For many, Gene was their Con-fessor. Often, he would just drop in (unannounced) at a rectory for a friendly visit and to offer support. He made time for his brothers in ministry. He listened intently. This was a tremendous gift given to priests and to the church.

The Archbishops were also keenly aware of Gene’s talent, concern and care. So, when a priest wasn’t fitting in, had trouble adjusting or whatever… what was the solution? Send him to Fr. Gianelli, he will help him. THIS WAS REPEATED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS: Send him to Fr. Gianelli, he will help him. Now this is not true for ALL of Fr. Assistants or, as they are called today Parochial Vicars”. He had many fine priests as well. Not all were problematic. Far from it!!

Msgr. Gene was a unique character and I say character in the finest sense of that word. He possessed boundless energy. Something akin to the Energizer Bunny!!!! As a victim for Christ, he gave his all. It was not unusual for him to say: I have 2 weddings, a funeral, 2 receptions to attend (but I will just drop in at each for a few minutes, this will make them happy), then hear confessions and celebrate the evening Vigil Mass on Saturday, have people in for dinner, do the cooking as well. Then, wonder why he was exhausted at night. Yes, through-out his ministry, Msgr. Gene wore many hats and he wore all of them well. And I believe that his most effective witness to Christ and his people was the way in which he faced, dealt with and accepted his illnesses, and, con-tinued to be a person of hope and joy. He valiantly fought his dreaded cancer and all the progressively debili-tating effects which accompanied it. When asked about his condition, he would honestly tell us what was hap-pening to him. In a continual weakening condition, he would always say, “But God is Good.” In this, he be-came a source of encouragement and strength for others. Please remember Msgr. Gene, as the priest who was able to laugh in the face of all adversity. Always remember, as he said so often, God is Good!!

Homily from Parish Mass,,continued I read somewhere an article which said: “the death of a priest is unlike the death of any other: we feel it differently, deeply. We sense that in losing him we have lost not only the man… but also his unique way of manifesting God. The voice that spoke of God has been silenced. No one can exemplify Christ for us in the singular way that Gene has done.” Let us not focus on our loss. Rather, cherish all that he gave you and all that he meant to you.

Most especially, I thank Msgr.’s sister Dorie, her family and all who were so caring, so present and so important to Gene. He loved you beyond meas-ure. I ask him now to pray for all of you as Christ now calls him by name, embraces him and welcomes him home to paradise. The Prophet Micah spoke a powerful message in ancient times. I truly think, Msgr.’s life is a reflection of this prophet’s words: “You have been told what the Lord requires of you: Only this. Act justly, Love tenderly and Walk humbly with your God.” Yes, the priest is called to be a servant, victim, brother, listener and friend. Gene was all of these and more. Gene, my friend, until we meet again, “May God hold you in the palm of his hand.”
