While celebrating our heritage with family and friends (old and new) this weekend, we are also raising funds to support our beloved Fritz Reuter Life Care Center and other charities.

Message from the PresidentDear Plattduetsche Volksfest Vereen Friends and Fellow Members of the PVV of New York and New Jersey:

Thank you for your support in attending our 139th Volksfest this year and we hope that your weekend at Schuetzen Park is a memorable one for many years to come.

We have a new look this year, as our Volksfest is being held in the Grand Ballroom at Schuetzen Park.We hope that you enjoy the Austrian Boys who will be playing your favorite German-American music, our vendors who have beautiful and authentic German souvenirs and do not forget to “Prosit” at our beer truck with imported selections of German beers on tap.

The Plattduetsche Volksfest Vereen appreciates your attendance at our events and this festival along with our other events is made possible through the hard work and countless hours of volunteering by our members and volunteers.

The revenues from our not-for-profit organization support the Fritz Reuter Life Care Center as well as other charities.

Special thanks to all our volunteers and committee members for making this Volksfest a success.A special thank you to our Executive Committee members: William Koehler, 1st Vice-President and this year’s Volksfest Chairperson, George Coche, 2nd Vice-President; Hermann Bornemann, Treasurer; Cathy Horosieski, Secretary and Helga Bastar, Recording Secretary and Journal Ad Correspondent.

In addition, we are grateful for the enthusiasm and guidance throughout the year from our Honorary Ehren Presidents: Frederick Hansen, Claus Suhr, Hermann Bornemann, Johann Waizenegger, Hertha Stuhlmann, Arfst Hansen, Henry Ehlen, Thomas Zwiener, Steve Purk, Sharon Purk, Dieter Pfisterer and Bob Schroeder for keeping the German/American traditions and cultures “alive”.

The Plattduetsche Volksfest Vereen is looking for “new” members who are always welcome to join our many clubs. If you enjoy singing, we have a men’s chorus and if you like target shooting, we have a Rifle Range at Schuetzen Park and a men’s and ladies rifle team. The German-American Heritage Museum of the USA™ in Washington DC is proud to announce their new exhibit “Berlins - Made in USA” which, for the first time ever, will tell the stories of US communities and towns named after the capital of Germany.

Berlin’s history, from its official founding in 1237 through today, will also be put on display.

As a celebration the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s visit to Berlin on June 26, 1963 where he spoke the historic phrase: “Ich bin ein Berliner!”, the exhibit will also include a special section about John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, his time in Berlin, and the outpouring of signs of sympathy from Berliners after his assassination.

DID YOU KNOW?• There are over 40 cities,

towns, villages, townships, and unincorporated areas in the USA named after Berlin, Germany.

• Although Berlin, Germany is often rumoured to be named for Albert the Bear, who was the first Margrave of Brandenburg (a royal position held during the Holy Roman Empire) the name Berlin stems from a Slavic word meaning swamp.
