Hey what do you know, it’s our 5th issue for this year and we’ve added another 4 pages, well-done to William for the hard work and also to the advertisers for putting up with our nagging for ad material to meet deadlines, thank you so much.

In this issue you’ll fi nd some interesting news articles from various supporters and a few great places to visit on your next breakfast-run. Both offering super deals just for bikers, yip we’re always on the look out for good meals at a low price and a good ride.

I can not stress this more, please send us your Club or Dealer Events, we’d like to fi ll at least two pages. We need pictures for the “Pic of the Month”, and we want to start a Biker Memorial Page,

contact us to fi nd out how you can contribute in order to pay tribute to those not longer with us.

This guy on the right, for those who don’t know yet, this is William and he is the guy to talk to regarding advertising, articles, reviews and other news. Yeah I know, I’m still here, but someone has to do all the hard labour. Contact him he’s a friendly guy, as you can see, and more than willing to assist.

Thanks again for your support in readership, advertising, your suggestions, ideas and for the words of encouragement, this is hard work and takes a lot of resources, dedication and commitment. This is a tool to serve you, so whatever it takes, we will keep at it. You are welcome to write to us on any subject you wish, we’d love to hear from you.

keeping it up by Hein Jonker

Ten Things All Car & Truck Drivers Should Know About Motorcycles

1. There are a lot more cars and trucks than motorcycles on the road, and some drivers don’t “recognize” a motorcycle; they ignore it (usually unintentionally). Look for motorcycles, especially when checking traffi c at an intersection.

2. Because of its small size, a motorcycle may look farther away than it is. It may also be diffi cult to judge a motorcycle’s speed. When checking traffi c to turn at an intersection or into (or out of) a driveway, predict a motorcycle is closer than it looks.

3. Because of its small size, a motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car’s blind spots (door/roof pillars) or masked by objects or backgrounds outside a car (bushes, fences, bridges, etc). Take an extra moment to thoroughly check traffi c, whether you’re changing lanes or turning at intersections.

4. Because of its small size a motorcycle may seem to be moving faster than it really is. Don’t assume all motorcyclists are speed demons.

5. Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or merely rolling off the throttle, thus not activating the brake light. Allow more following distance, say 3 or 4 seconds. At intersections, predict a motorcyclist may slow down without visual warning.

6. Turn signals on a motorcycle usually are not self-canceling, thus some riders, (especially beginners) sometimes forget to turn them off after a turn or lane change. Make sure a motorcycle’s signal is for real.

7. Motorcyclists often adjust position within a lane to be seen more easily and to minimize the effects of road debris, passing vehicles, and wind. Understand that motorcyclists adjust lane position for a purpose, not to be reckless or show off or to allow you to share the lane with them.

8. Maneuverability is one of a motorcycle’s better characteristics, especially at slower speeds and with good road conditions, but don’t expect a motorcyclist to always be able to dodge out of the way.

9. Stopping distance for motorcycles is nearly the same as for cars, but slippery pavement makes stopping quickly diffi cult. Allow more following distance behind a motorcycle because it can’t always stop “on a dime.”

10. When a motorcycle is in motion, don’t think of it as motorcycle; think of it as aperson.

REVIEW - BMW K1200GTREVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRISTo Ian and Shaheen from Auto Umhlanga, thanks for allowing us to add a few much enjoyed km’s to your GT, we do appreciate it. FIRST IMPRESSIONChanges from last year’s model are so vast that we are not really looking at an upgrade for 2006, but a replacement, an entirely new machine. Bavarian Motor Works designers have come up with some gorgeous lines that transpose a rather large bike into a streamlined sports-tourer blending both beauty and excitement while allowing comments like luxurious and performance to share the same breath. The Xenon headlights, guaranteeing you are always kept visible, are melded neatly into the frame. Fuel tank design is modish and especially striking in the two-toned silver and blue option we reviewed. But the standout for me is the stylish and sporty tail-end, kept tidy with integrated indicators and well designed colour-coded panniers.CONTROLS AND GADGETSAlthough possessive of an array of useful settings and conveniences, the instrument panel is uncluttered and appealing, while its illumination self-adjusts to the ambient light. The list of such luxuries includes electronically adjustable windscreen, Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA), cruise control, heated grips, and individually adjustable heated seats. An on-board computer is the source of a variety of useful information, such as average speed travelled, fuel consumption, predicted fuel range, outside temperature and oil levels. There is even a warning indicator to let you know when your brake pads are worn.PERFORMANCEThe K1200GT has been graced, to my delight, with the in-line 4-cyclinder found in the K1200S, although slightly de-tuned for more bottom-end torque. The difference in throttle feedback is substantial. There are no rough spots in the extra smooth power curve, but it feels happiest at lower revs, where it pulls like heck! This is a high performance engine allowing for lofty top-end speeds with stability to match. Cornering is surprisingly agile, for a for you would not expect a hefty 249kg tourer to be so easily rolled from side to side. Entering corners too fast and last minute braking seems like something to attempt only on a supersport bike, but this suspension gives so much confidence that it’s easy to forget what you’re riding until you run out of ground clearance! That clearance is reached long before the GT’s ability or grip is compromised. Only on fast downhill swerves did its weight begin to reveal itself with the front end feeling slightly soggy. The linked ABS braking system offers immense stopping power bringing this sizable machine to a standstill in a significantly short distance – and significant is good on our rural roads where cows, goats and who-knows-what may be around the next bend!COMFORTThe seamless power delivery and impeccably mated suspension deliver an exceptionally smooth ride. Wind protection was every thing you’d expect from a tourer, with good coverage for hands and arms, as well as legs. The electronic windscreen could be adjusted while in motion to offer anywhere from decent coverage to a massive bubble of relatively still air. The height-adjustable handlebars and saddle offer a customized riding position for all shapes and sizes. OVERALL RATINGForget shortcuts. The Grand Tourismo pleads with you to take the long way home. The K1200GT is the epitome of “Sports Tourer” fulfilling both criteria equally well. And with the proven reliability and sophisticated engineering of a state-of-the-art BMW, how can you go wrong?

REVIEW - jonway sam 200REVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRISThank you to Attie from Jonway South Coast for organizing our first quad ever for review. Thanks also for allowing me use of your underground track, don’t worry my lips are sealed!

There are a lot of bikes, scooters and quads entering our South African market at the moment from China, Korea, India and the like. We all have question marks in our minds concerning build quality, maintenance and spares, and performance on these machines. Now, at least for the SAM 200, we have some answers.FIRST IMPRESSIONThe build quality on this Jonway is actually pretty good, take a close look and you will likely be surprised at how well everything fits together. This quad is really well thought out, with the higher maintenance engine areas easily accessible. Made in Taiwan, the engine is basically the old Honda motor; styling is very similar to the Raptor. Honda power and Yamaha styling, interesting… Aggressive looks and compact design make it the most attractive quad in the Jonway arsenal by a country mile, particularly in the white colour scheme that we had for review.PERFORMANCEThe SAM 200 is a capable machine that is really rider friendly (read- “makes you look like a pro”). Power is derived from a 200cc, water cooled, single cylinder 4-stroke, producing 15N.m/6,000rpm and 10.3kw/7,500rpm. Dry weight is a competitive 155kg; gearing is four forward and one extremely useful reverse, manual clutch. What does that translate to? A quad that is super easy to flick around, wheelie, tear up rocks and get up to all fashions of general misbehaviour; an absolute blast to ride! It is in its element on trails, especially on challenging surfaces and venturing through, under or over difficult obstacles. We were also able to find some decent hills to test climbing ability, which were accomplished with surprising ease. Specs sheet claims a top speed of 75km/h, but we got it to 90km/h easily, just don’t expect it to handle at that speed. Braking is single disc at the back and drums up front, which, for trail use, provided ample stopping power, but add some speed and they AWOL on you. Fortunately, front disks can be made available at around R2000, which should make quite a difference.COMFORTShocks are twin up font and mono at the rear, all fully adjustable. At lower speeds the suspension feels just right; soaks up a lot of the rough stuff and feels good on landings too. Ample ground clearance offers the shocks a decent amount of travel, which they make full use of, and allows you to take on some serious obstacles. One thing that proved annoying was the rubber foot pegs, which provided little to no grip, causing you to lose footing at the most inopportune times. RUNNING COSTA one-year repair warranty is provided by Southern African Merchants (SAM), and Jonway South Coast is now offering an extended 2 year repair warranty for an extra R1500; worry free riding for 2 years, that’s got to make you happy.OVERALL RATINGTo my surprise, Jonway has produced a truly exciting quad at a very low price. Easy enough to ride for the wife and kids, but enough of the right stuff to keep you stoked. Honestly, what you are getting in this package for the price is outstanding; “value for money” never meant this much value, or this much fun!

words of wisdom by Hein Jonker

It makes all the difference

On a crowded street of one of our large cities, a young man was snatched from the path of a speeding truck, his life saved by a venerable-looking man. Still breathless from fright, the youth thanked the one who saved his life and then was lost in the crowd.

Two weeks later in a crowded courtroom, an anxious young man stood in the prisoner’s box to be sentenced for murder.

“Young man, have you anything to say before the sentence of death is passed upon you?” “Why! Yes! Yes, Judge,” the youth responded, “you know me.” A silence moved like a shock wave over the courtroom. “I’m sorry. I cannot place you.”

“Yes. Surely you remember. Two weeks ago. At Main and Seventh Streets, you saved my life. Surely, Judge, you can do something to save me now.” A silence pervaded the courtroom. “Young man, now I do remember you. But that day I was your savior. Today I am your judge.”

Today the Lord Jesus Christ wants to be your Savior. If you refuse Him and His grace, one day He will be your Judge.

RUN FEEDBACK

The CMA Nappy Run for 2006 was another great success. The benefactor for 2006 was Tabitha Ministries in PMB. Above some of the CMA Durban members and (Top Right) the winner of the “Pocket Bike” sponsored by Taz Industries - Pics by Bike Talk

The Dragon had a good variety of action and people this year, but did I notice a drop in numbers? Well, the venue was great as always within a nice comfortable distance from Durban. They also had some fantastic prizes from R5000 cash to a R10000 spray job. It’s good to see a good rally supported this well. Well-done to Jo and Les!! - Pics by Johan

JUST FOR FUNBruce and Craig at DMC granted an already drooling guy a day-ride on this smooth-monster. I used to ride a FJR1300 and then opted for a more playful R1 and now I had the privilege of riding the long-awaited ZX14R.

First I need to start by saying, it looks awesome, the size the lines and the overall design of the bike have been well thought through. But let’s answer the question everyone is asking; “What’s the performance like?”

I took this brute down the south coast, and was surprised by the smooth acceleration and combined comfort even while travelling at high speeds. Don’t think for one moment that it is unstable in any situation, because it is not. Believe you me, this is one of those bikes where you need to idle at 180km/h with amazing ease, comfort and stability.

Road holding is fi rm and reliable but remember this, it is not a small pocket rocket that could be fl icked from one side to another, this is a Super Sports Tourer on steroids. At no stage was this bike unpredictable or made me feel uncertain about the ride. It handled every bend I went through effortlessly and with confi dence.

As for performance, well at 6000rpm in 4th twisting on the throttle becomes a whole new ball-game, it get’s to 260km/h super fast. Its breathtaking performance and stability will satisfy many potential buyers.

Go get one with peace of mind knowing you’re buying a great all-rounder. - Hein Jonker
