Honoring Christ by serving the needs of children and families

Page 2: August 2011 Family Advocate

August in South Florida means it is Back-to-School time. Whether your child is starting kindergarten or finishing high school it is a busy time for the whole family. That’s why it is so important for parents to not only have a plan, but also be a fan!

Be sure to sit down as a family and chart out what you can and cannot do from a family calendar standpoint. Remember, the three top choices should be family time, school, and worship. Everything else can have its place after those three are established.

Train your children to be reasonable in what they set out to do. They can’t fit every activity in their daily routine, so help them select the best activities that will build them up and build their character up as well. Establishing healthy boundaries early on sets a child up for success and assists in developing a responsible adult.

Remember, as a parent one of the most important gifts you can give your child is supportive encouragement. As they grow and discover the gift the Lord has given them, cheer them on their journey. There will always be bumps on the road to discourage them; but if they know you believe in them and if you remind them that they can do all things through Christ who gives them strength…then, mission accomplished.

Commit to making this your best parenting year yet and see what God will do in and through your family.

Serving Him,

A Note From Bob -

Three years ago, Robert Taylor

of Burdette Beckmann, Inc. had a

desire to fundraise for Sheridan House. He then planned,

organized, and launched the BBi Hooked On Kids Charity Fishing

Tournament to benefit Sheridan House. The support he received

by both participants and sponsors has been incredible for the last

two years, and we have a feeling that this year will be the biggest

and most exciting fishing tournament yet!

When Robert was asked what motivated him to host this event, he

quickly answered, “Family. In the early seventies, my folks, Bob and Sherry Taylor, caught the vision Bill Billingsley cast to our church to help kids and families in need and they have given faithfully ever since. Flash forward a few decades. I joined the family business and our little company has grown and is able to give back to our community and to what God is doing here in South Florida. Sheridan House is our ‘Alpha’ charity given our rock solid faith in the Godly vision of Bill Billingsley and Bob Barnes.

Our goal for the BBI Hooked On Kids Fishing Tournament is to reach new donors for Sheridan House, offer a fun, first class day to fishermen on beautiful gulf waters, and ultimately, make a difference in the lives of kids and families. We would love for you to be a part of it!”

Sheridan House is so thankful to Robert Taylor and the BBi team.

Their enthusiasm for making a difference in the lives of children

and families is incredible. God is using them in big ways and we get

to be a part of it. It is such an honor and a blessing.

Please join Burdette Beckmann, Inc.

in supporting children and families.

The flats fishing tournament will take

place at the Westshore Yacht Club in

Tampa, FL, on Wednesday, October

19th and Thursday, October 20th

(*see ad for additional details.) The

proceeds derived from this event will directly benefit the children

and families served daily by Sheridan House.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Parental involvement is imperative for a child at Sheridan House to experience true success within our program. When a kid enrolls, the parents do too. Our program is unique from most others in the nation. The children are on our campuses during the week and then they go home and “do program” with their parents on the weekends. Additionally, all of the parents are required to attend parenting classes bi-monthly. The sessions are designed to help them hone their parenting skills and teach them how to raise their children up “in the way that they should go” Proverbs 22:6.

No child has ever succeeded or failed by themselves at Sheridan House. For every child that grows leaps and bounds while enrolled, it is in part because their parents are committed to changing their parenting behavior. They understand that they need to

provide consistent structure in the home in order to demonstrate love, patience, understanding, consistency, and discipline.

Eric and Keli are a great example of residential parents who were dialed in to the structure of our program since day one. When their son Dennis arrived, he was disrespectful, manipulative, defiant, immature, and lazy. He also struggled with lying. Eric and Keli adore their son and were willing to do everything in their power to

help Dennis become a respectful and responsible young man…and it’s working. Dennis’ response has been extremely positive. His desire to change is evident. He is currently eligible to graduate, but has chosen to finish our summer program first. Dennis wants to work on developing his character a bit more.

It has been a pleasure working with Eric and Keli as they parent God’s way. We pray for the Lord’s continued favor in the life of their family.
