August Highlights

Art Through Time: A Global ViewThursdays at 10pm starting August 11 at 10pm

Art Through Time: A Global View takes a thematic approach to art history and appreciation. Rather than a linear chronology, the materials explore connections in Western and non-Western art, illuminating the breadth, complexity, and beauty of works produced around the world and at different periods of time. Each program focuses on a particular theme, a diverse group of leading experts, together with a living artist, contextualize and connect featured works from different cultures and eras.

P.O.V. “Steam of Life” Tuesday, August 2 at 10pm

From a land of long, dark winters comes “Steam of Life,” a moody, comic and moving study of Finnish men, as framed by the national obsession with the sauna. There, they come together to sweat out not only the grime of contemporary life, but also their grief, hopes, joys and memories. Beautifully and hauntingly shot, the acclaimed film provides a surprising glimpse into the lives of Finnish men and a remarkable depiction of the troubled and often reticent hearts of contemporary Western men.

Great Performances “Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert 2011” Friday, August 19 at 9:30pm

Led by guest conductor Valery Gergiev, the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic presents an open-air concert in the magnificent gardens of Austria’s Imperial Schönbrunn Palace. Selections include Franz Liszt’s “Les Préludes”; Nicolo Paganini’s “Violin Concerto, D major, 1st Movement”; Modest Mussorgsky’ “Pictures at an Exhibition”; and Johann Strauss II’s “Wiener Blut.”

Dinosaur Train “Dinosaur Big City Movie”Tuesday, August 23 at 8:30am

Big dinosaurs, big musical numbers and big fun are on the ticket when Dinosaur Train launches its second season with this one-hour special “Dinosaur Big City.” Buddy and the Pteranodon family gather all their Theropod friends together to travel to the big Theropod Club Convention which is being held in Laramidia, the “Dinosaur Big City!” Among the travelers is King Cryolophosaurus, who’s more than a little nervous about giving a concert in front of his biggest audience ever. Can Buddy and Tiny help him overcome his fear of performing?

Autism: Coming of AgeSunday, August 14 at 2pm

When people think of autism, they instinctively think of children. However, in the next 10 to 15 years, an estimated 800,000 children with autism will age out of the school system and transition into adulthood. Then, they will look to ill-prepared state and federal governments for the support services and resources to meet their many needs: a situation autism experts refer to as the “coming tsunami.”

Autism: Coming of Age provides an inside look at the lives of three adults with autism and includes interviews with their families and support teams. Autism and disability experts from Massachusetts, New York, Washington, Virginia and Pennsylvania also discuss the current system, impending challenges and possible outcomes for the future.

Dan Ryan (pictured) did not qualify to receive services as an adult. As a

result, his parents now must assume full responsibility for Dan’s care for

the rest of their lives.

Simon and Garfunkel: Songs of America

Monday, August 29 at 9:30pm

Originally airing on November 30, 1969, Simon and Garfunkel: Songs of America is a controversial and rare TV show containing in-studio rehearsal and recording, road travel, political viewpoints, concert performances and video montages of key events of the 1960s. The program was originally to be a “Bell Telephone” TV special but when they saw the finished product they pulled the plug when video images of John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King were shown while “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” played, the Bell Telephone executives commented, “They’re all democrats, why no republicans?” Simon & Garfunkel said, “Is that what you see? How about they were all assassinated?” Simon & Garfunkel met with CBS and they sympathized with the content and agreed to air the program.

Joni Mitchell’s Blue

Sunday, August 14, 8pm

In Joni Mitchell’s 1971 album Blue, the Canadian singer-songwriter put the experience of being a woman and being human on artful display through her confessional lyrics, innovative open guitar tunings, and jazz-inflected vocals. Many of her fans believe it is her finest effort. In this program, musicians, music writers, fans, and Joni Mitchell herself reflect on Blue, released forty years ago this summer. Host-producer Paul Ingles mixes music from Blue and other Joni Mitchell albums with informed commentary and archival interviews with Mitchell. Guests include music writers Ann Powers, Anthony DeCurtis, Paul Zollo, and Lydia Hutchinson. Also featured are musicians Shawn Colvin, Lucy Kaplansky, and others.

Freakonomics Radio: The Economist’s Guide to ParentingSunday, August 28, 8pm

In their books Freakonomics and SuperFreakonomics, Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner use the tools of economics to explore real-world behavior. Now, Freakonomics Radio tells you things you always thought you knew but didn’t, and things you never thought you wanted to know, but do. In this episode, Levitt and Dubner assemble a roundtable of economists to talk about child-rearing, with one essential question in mind: How much do parents really matter, and in what dimensions? We hear about parents’ effect on everything from education and culture cramming to smoking and drinking. The economists include Joshua Gans, author of Parentonomics: An Economist Dad Looks at Parenting and Bryan Caplan, author of Selfish Reasons to Have More Kids: Why Parenting is More Fun and Less Work Than You Think.

Wilderness Plots in ConcertSunday, August 28 at 7:30pm

Filmed live in Bloomington in June 2011, Wilderness Plots in Concert features five of Indiana’s most treasured singer-songwriters coming together to create a moving and powerful evening of entertainment.

Wilderness Plots began as a book of stories by Scott Russell Sanders. These fifty brief tales trace the settlement of the Ohio Valley between the American Revolution and the Civil War, while meditating on the cost of that transformation to native people, enslaved people, wildlife, and forests.

First published in 1983, the book was out of print when Tim Grimm found a copy in 2006. He read a few tales and began hearing songs. At the next meeting of a songwriters’ group, he suggested to his fellow musicians—Krista Detor, Carrie Newcomer, Tom Roznowski, and Michael White—that they browse through the stories and see if they could find songs of their own. They soon found plenty. In spring 2007 they released a Wilderness Plots album and began presenting a stage show featuring their music, with Sanders

as narrator. Since then they have introduced audiences to preachers and profiteers, generals and journalists, hermits and healers, farmers and bonecollectors, lovers, liars, layabouts and other high spirited characters—the kinds of people who, in all ages, have made history. Like the richest American folklore, these tales and songs witness to life on a wild, dangerous, and glorious continent. Says Scott Sanders, “it’s about dwelling more consciously in the present by learning more deeply about the past.”

Author Scott Russell Sanders reads from Wilderness Plots.
