How long does a Life Group last? The members of each Life Group commit to meet weekly for a three-month term. The Fall Term generally runs Sep- temberNovember with a break for December and the Spring Term runs JanuaryMarch with a break for April. We may also decide to offer a Summer Term. Understanda- bly, a Life Group may decide to break for a week because of holidays. At the end of each term, each member may con- tinue with the group, try a new group, or even take a break from a Life Group. Additionally, the group as a whole may decide to take a break for the next term. What is Required to be a Part of a Life Group? Joining a Life Group requires a commitment. Each Life Group will create a covenant for each member to sign. Covenants may state that members commit to attend meetings regularly for three months, to complete the group study before each meeting, or to participate in a service project. Each Life Group will determine the specifics of their group, but these are the essential elements. We encourage the covenant because commitment to actively participating in the group is key to significant relationships being built among one another, and we want each Life Group member to get the most out of his or her participation in the group. I hope you’ll consider joining us for this exciting new minis- try. It is a great way for us to grow closer as a church and to grow personally as disciples of Christ. On page three you’ll find descriptions of several new Life Groups forming in September. Pastor Geoff Helton THE UPDATE August 2011 “Making Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World.” An Exciting New Opportunity for Personal Growth What is a Life Group? Life Groups are the new small group ministry starting at our church this fall. A Life Group is a small group of adults who commit to meet together once a week for three- month terms to build relationships through Bible-based study, support, prayer, and fellowship. At the end of each three-month term, each member may decide to continue with the group, try another group, or take a break. Life Groups, like Sunday School classes, are part of the Educa- tion Ministry of the United Methodist Church of Ephrata. Participation in small groups is vital because life change (transformational spiritual growth) happens in small groups. We believe that the most effective way to promote spiritual growth is to develop significant relationships with one another. Small groups facilitate and grow these rela- tionships. What Happens in a Life Group? A Life Group meets weekly for a time of study, support, prayer and fellowship. Each Life Group determines the length of their meetings. The meetings should last one to two hours, depending on the needs and desires of the group members. Each Life Group will also be encouraged to plan and carry out a mission project and one social event for each three-month term. Life Groups can study different things. Some groups may do a study associated with the current sermon series. Others might chose to use a small group curriculum or DVD cur- riculum series. Others might study a book of the Bible to- gether or read a book together.

Fall2011

Monday Evenings 630-800pm mdash Change the World Led by Pastor Geoff and Meagan Helton

Our Monday Evening Group will begin with the book Change the World by Rev Michael Slaughter In this provocative passionate and often critical book Slaughter lead pastor at Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church takes a hard look at the seeker-sensitive attendance-focused strategies that have driven the church growth movement for the past 20 yearsmdashand finds them severely lacking Lets quit worrying about numbers in the pews asserts Slaughter and begin to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our homes our communities and the outermost places of the world In such chapters as Disciples vs Decisions the author describes the mission-driven locally-focused and challenging philosophy of congregational life thats made a significant impact in places like Darfur Sudan

This group is for people interested in growing in active and committed discipleship ldquoserving as the hands and feet of Jesus in our homes our communities and the outermost places of the worldrdquo

Our Feasting on the Word small group will use a study by the same name This study uses a program called the lectionary which has been used by pastors and churches to align the reading preaching and teaching of scripture with the church year This means that when the church isnrsquot in a special sermon series the groups study will often align with the scripture readings and message of Sunday morning This group is for people that are interested in growing in their knowledge and love of scripture and in applying Godrsquos word to daily living

The two following small groups will launch this fall with more options to follow in the Spring Depending upon interest we may form other groups as needed The church will work to provide childcare if needed so please let us know if having childcare available would help you participate in a small group

Thursday Evenings 700pm mdash Feasting on the Word Led by Dean and Marlene Albee

To Sign up for a Life Group 1 Send an e-mail to samephratamethodistorg with the small group you are interested in as well as the

Heifer International Project

Our Sunday school classes have collected enough money to buy the following animals from Heifer International

One Llama $15000 One Goat $12000 One Sheep $12000 One Pig $12000 A trio of Rabbits $ 6000 Two flocks of Chicks $ 4000 Some Bees $ 3000 Total $64000

Heifer Internationalrsquos mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth

By giving families a hand-up not just a hand-out they are empowered to turn lives of hunger and poverty into self-reliance and hope

With gifts of livestock and training they help families im-prove their nutrition and generate income in sustainable ways Heifer International refers to the animals as ldquoliving loansrdquo because in exchange for their livestock and training families agree to give one of its animalrsquos offspring to an-other family in need Itrsquos called Passing on the Gift ndash a cor-nerstone of Heifer Internationalrsquos mission that creates an ever-expanding network of hope and peace

This picture is on the front of the thank you card that Heifer International sent to our Sunday school kids

To Sign up for a Life Group 1 Send an e-mail to samephratamethodistorg with the small group you are interested in as well as the

names of those who wish to join Also indicate if you need childcare 2 Sign up during coffee hour at church beginning Sunday August 7th
