What a year it’s been for us Brits. All the pageantry, all the tradition, all the ‘sporting competition’. The Olympics provide a fi ne example, with London 2012 somehow coming to serve as shorthand for the notion of embracing the best of British. We do it all the time really, but lately there’s a discernibly heightened sense of national pride at large in our streets, as amid the fl urry to prepare for the Games we call upon our collective skills to celebrate up and down the country.

The spotlight is not only on Olympic contenders but creators too: artists, gallery owners, fashion and interior designers... and not forgetting local business owners. East Ender (and long-time Zest favourite) Lee Broom is one such talent. Broom has been busy kitting out the Gold Room at Lancaster House, where the British Embassy is hosting international business luminaries during the Games - read more about it on page 52.

We couldn’t resist a sporting fashion tribute either. As the summer appears to have done a runner (in true Olympic style), perhaps it’s time for us to do the same - albeit in more stylish get-up (p.22). At the very least, you might fancy a leisurely walk - for a spot of exercise that’s simultaneously a lesson in local history and cockney rhyming slang, see our piece about local guv’nor Jonnie Fielding on page 15.

Meanwhile, we’re stoked to have interviewed the one and only Lily Cole (p.16), the face of the new Body Shop beauty range and a staunch supporter of sustainability and the Fair Trade movement. Cole only works for brands that chime with her own ethos - she may be a supermodel, but it’s doubly exciting to discover she’s a super person, too, with brains to boot.

If you’re still clamouring for festivities of Olympic proportions, head on over to our On the Agenda section on page 10 for handy tips to help you make the most of the remaining month of ‘summer’.

All that remains is to wish GB good luck at the Games. Go get ‘em, team...

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM AT REGENT’S PARK OPEN AIR THEATREUNTIL 8 SEPTEMBER“one of the cultural highlights of a London summer” (Guardian). This summer, forbidden love at the heart of a gypsy community brings danger to a new and ‘highly original’ contemporary production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Playing alongside Shakespeare’s play of youthful rebellion and sexual awakening is the Tony Award-winning Ragtime the Musical - a powerful story of hope set at the turn of the 20th century; of a Harlem pianist, a white middle-class family and a Latvian immigrant, whose dreams of a better world shape their destiny. For more information, pre-theatre dining options, and to book, visit openairtheatre.com.

If your’e unaware that ‘bowl of chalk’ is cockney rhyming slang for walk, then perhaps Jonnie Fielding’s innovative and informal guided tours are for you. Friendly, eager (even in less than

pleasant weather conditions) and chatty, Jonnie would make the perfect pub quiz teammate, being a veritable fountain of local knowledge. I join the Sunday morning ‘my neck of the woods’ tour which is, as you may have guessed, an exploration of Jonnie’s east end neighbourhood.

We meet outside Moorfi elds Eye Hospital and the facts and anecdotes swiftly come pouring in; the sordid story of Eric Gill, the man behind the hospital’s relief sculpture, the rural history of the Moorfi elds area, and the spot of the recently sold Banksy artwork, whose £30,000 proceeds went directly to the hospital.

WALKTHIS WAYGemma Billington takes a ‘bowl of chalk’

around London’s fascinating East End

Photography: Ivan Lieman

“It’s a bottomless pit of intrigue” says Jonnie on his love of London history. “Learning about the characters and everything that has made London what it is today keeps me on my toes. It’s constantly changing.” The Sunday walk covers Islington, Hoxton, Brick Lane, Shoreditch, Spitalfi elds and the City. Though I’m no stranger to this side of town, there’s an abundance of history that I had not even considered and places I’ve passed countless times without realising their signifi cance. The wonderful thing about London’s history is that it doesn’t need to announce itself; it’s just there and you either know about it or you don’t. The site of Jack the Ripper’s most infamous murder, for example, is now a banal Spitalfi elds car park. The urban aesthetic of the east end belies the fascinating history within, but its the infl ux of modern street

art that has attracted a new audience. Space invaders, mushrooms, animals and stick men have literally taken over the area - and once you know their story, you’ll be spotting them even more. The circus-art style typography of artist Ben Flynn (aka Ben Eine) is found over many a shop-front shutter. On the Prime Minister’s fi rst offi cial trip to the states, Eine was commissioned by the more culturally savvy Samantha Cameron to create an artwork as a present for the Obamas.

Bowl of Chalk offers an education in our capital’s long history that goes well beyond the guidebooks. You’ll never believe what’s right under your nose...

MODELBEHAVIOUR

Words: Gemma Billington

Making the faintest ripple, let alone waves, in the notoriously tough and competitive world of modelling is no mean feat.

Yet the beguiling, doll-like Lily Cole has not only taken it by storm - becoming the youngest model ever to grace British Vogue at the age of 16 - but has made it all look rather easy.

Devon-born Cole was spotted - as many a successful supermodel is - through a chance encounter in banal circumstances. For Cole, it was model scout Benjamin Hart who discovered her outside a Soho burger bar back in 2003 and signed her with Storm

Models. Her career took off meteorically after she worked with acclaimed photographer Steven Meisel for a now iconic Italian Vogue fashion shoot. Cole rapidly went from new face to fashion’s most-wanted, and has since graced the covers of Vogue, Interview and Numéro and walked the catwalk for Anna Sui, Alexander McQueen and Chanel amongst countless others. Whilst her striking features and distinctive red hair still set her miles apart from her contemporaries, Cole has also turned the irksome model-turned-actress cliché on its head, most notably for her critically revered performance in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus in 2009. Cole is famed for challenging the shallow, dumb model stereotype, achieving

Meet Lily Cole: model, King’s Cross resident, activist and Cambridge graduate

a double first in Art History from Cambridge University. Not a bad C.V. for a 24 year-old. It is Cole’s outspoken ethics and activist work, however, that she - professionally speaking - is most proud of. A member of The Observer Ethical Awards Committee and co-owner of ethical clothing line The North Circuit, Cole’s ethical endeavours have most recently seen her sign-up as The Body Shop’s first ambassador; championing their Beauty with Heart campaign. “I have long been an advocate of the potential of using business and consumer power to cause positive change,” she says of her alliance with the ethical cosmetic and skincare giants. The cynical notion of marrying two

opposing ideals - ethical awareness and consumerism - obviously doesn’t escape Cole, who says ”business can definitely be a force for good. In our global capitalist system, business infrastructure affects the daily life of most people on the planet, not to mention the environment. When those business infrastructures start to change, the world changes with them.” Cole’s personal attitude towards beauty mirrors that of The Body Shop, who eschew the ‘photoshopped perfection’ of the modelling world. “I feel like people are questioning superficial values and looking for real values instead” she says, “The Body Shop has been successful because the brand has integrity. I like the way they push important issues onto the agenda.”

Cole is opinionated, but never obnoxiously so, and she attains a mix of humility and lightheartedness with an intelligent, business-minded approach. She is blasé, however, when it comes to her numerous professional accolades, and hopes that she is seen as “a daughter, friend and lover fi rst”. Her answers are peppered with profound philosophical quotations and she clearly has not only a passion for ethical awareness, but also a thorough understanding of the subject. But what is it about activism, a life choice that invariably arouses vitriolic, negative connotations, and requires a rather hefty work commitment, that inspires Cole? “I used to have the famous Edmund Burke quote on my wall, ‘All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing’ she says. “I’m not saying I’m

environment.”

a good man, but I think as soon as you are aware of injustices you have a responsibility to try and address them, so I guess some of it is inspired by a sort of guilt complex!”

Juggling modelling, acting and ambassador duties, Cole is certainly doing a good job of appeasing any such guilt complexes. So what’s next in the pipeline? “I have loads of ideas and energy” she says, letting slip that her own Body Shop campaign is coming soon. “I have three fi lms coming out this year and am working on a very exciting, fairly radical project in the social media space.” Whatever she takes on, Lily Cole is sure to do so with grace, intelligence and a sense of humour. Beauty, brains... and so much more.

Are there any women in business whom you particularly admire? Why? Vivienne Westwood is a hero of mine. I think she is a force of nature - challenging norms and pushing boundaries along the way.

What’s the most important book or fi lm you have read/seen? I have recently watched Unmistaken Child, and recommend that everyone else watch it too. It is mind-expanding!

What’s the best piece of advice that you have ever been given? My favourite quote is by Goethe: “Whatever you dream you can do begin it. Boldness has genius power and magic in it. Begin it now”

Who do you think was the greatest activist in recent time? Aung San Suu Kyi is one of the greatest fi gures in recent times to fi ght for democracy and freedom in Burma. I truly respect her.

In theBagWe catch up with Mimi Berry, founder of the eponymous leather handbag and accessory brand, to discuss east London’s ever changing fashion scene and Lanvin heels...

20

Tell us the story of your business, which was set-up in 2001. How did you start the line? From a very early age I was interested in fashion and I was really obsessed with making things as a child. I graduated in 1999 and started making and selling accessories 2 years later.

Have you always been interested in fashion and, in particular, accessories?

I studied Fashion at Central St Martins and as a teenager I wanted to do millinery, then switched to fashion. Handbags happened by accident.

Your showroom and studio are still situated in Bethnal Green. What do you think of the fashion scene in east London and how has it changed in the 11 years Mimi Berry has been running? It has developed and become more commercial. Brick Lane is the new Camden in a sense. Things are moving north and further east, which is exciting, however.

What inspires your designs?Necessity and function. I also ask and listen to my customers. That’s crucial.

How would describe your own personal style? It’s certainly grown up since St. Martins, and I’ve become more traditional in many ways.

What’s your most expensive thing in your wardrobe?Easy. A pair of Lanvin heels. I saw, I bought. I never regretted.

What are some of Mimi Berry’s all time best-selling pieces? The Peggy and Elsie satchels. Also the Eric bag.

Can you tell us about the Mimi at Tate range. How were you approached for this? Mimi for Tate has been going for about 5 years. I was originally approached as they were looking for a new British leather accessories designer, and the team at Tate had seen my ranges in a few stores in London. It has been a great collaboration. mimiberry.co.uk

GOING FOR GOLDTatty Devine have been busy. Not content with preparing a new main collection for London Fashion Week, the queens of perspex have launched a rather fi ne Olympic Collection that’s sure to get you in the sporting spirit. What’s more, they continue to offer a diverse range of fascinating workshops at their East End studio - previous themes include the ‘craftsy’ dinosaur and bunting necklaces. Let your inner geek shine through with these cut-away white sandals. Their retro design will go with anything (well, almost), and we think they’ll scrub up nicely with a fl oral dress and frilly socks (for a grungey look) or a simple smock (for a more arty feel). such as UV damage, together with the visible ones. Using this alongside a thorough skin examination, the team formulates the correct treatment plan to fi t each client’s lifestyle and get the results. THE TREATMENT: I opt for the HydraFacial, which is aimed at resurfacing the skin without lasers. Using a spiral shaped tip, my aesthetic nurse Chantelle expertly extracts the impurities that have built up in my skin. Though slightly scratchy, it is far from painful, and contrary to most skin treatments, I actually feel like it is doing something to ameliorate my skin. The beauty of the treatment is it cleverly infuses hydrating anti-oxident serums. After, Chantelle shines red LED lights on my skin to increase collagen and elastin production.

THE VERDICT: Unequivocally the best facial I’ve ever had. My skin was instantly brighter, cleaner and fresher, and following the stream of compliments I got, I will certainly be back, perhaps even for Botox, a treatment I’d until now discounted.

THE CLINIC: Tucked away just behind Harley Street, visitors to the Waterhouse Young clinic would be forgiven for thinking they had stumbled across an exclusive members club, such is the elegant façade. Scaling the staircase up from the grand entrance does nothing to disabuse one of the notion, until, at the top, you are greeted with smiles and a genuine sense of welcome. Waterhouse Young’s eminently experienced team specialises in non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Sound intimidating? It shouldn’t. Between its registered aesthetic nurses, doctors and surgeons there is no team in London with more expert knowledge of facial structure.

THE WELCOME: The warmth of the reception is the fi rst thing to strike visitors. As you reach the top fl oor – which is fl ooded with natural light – you are ushered into a comfortable waiting room, complete with copies of Vogue et al, and even iPads – and offered nuts with an anti-oxidant drink of your choice; detox, age defying, multi vitamin or energy.

THE PEOPLE: Norman Waterhouse is one of the UK’s leading plastic surgeons. He has held a number of senior posts including President of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Richard Young is a specialist in craniofacial surgery with a particular interest in cosmetic surgery and facial rejuvenation. The most recent addition is Dr. Michele Engel, chosen to complement the team for her unsurpassed understanding of facial structure. She is renowned for her personal approach, which is entirely in keeping with the clinic’s culture. For her the art is in subtlety and enhancement, as opposed to radical change. THE ETHOS: It is all about holistic care at Waterhouse Young. The onus is on treating individual needs, and rather than affecting a perfect symmetry or an identikit frozen face, the team focuses on augmenting natural beauty and looking at overall skin health. Treatment options available include Botox, Dermal Fillers, Dermaroller, HydraFacial and Obagi; all patients are offered a computerised skin analysis prior to treatment to identify underlying issues

OTHER TOP 3 TREATMENTS1. Botox: The clinic specialises in administering Botox, the muscle relaxant which minimises the appearance of lines on the face, can tighten jaw lines giving a lift to the neck and is great for eliminating excessive sweating. The effects can last for three-to-six months. Each person is given a full consultation beforehand to determine exactly the effect they hope to achieve.

2. Dermaroller: Advanced micro-skin needling which catalyses the regeneration of collagen and elastin and as such is perfect for treating acne scarring, sun damage, facial and décolleté lines, stretchmarks and overall skin rejuvenation. 3. Dermal Fillers: A treatment which plumps the skin, immediately reducing the signs of ageing. The effects typically last 6 – 12 months, and at Waterhouse Young, the team uses a range of Juvederm and Restylane products.

New Opening AESOP ISLINGTON Aesop’s no nonsense, androgynous approach to design has stood its ground amongst a fl ock of ‘cutesy’ brands for 25 years and Islington have recently welcomed the company’s sixth London store to Cross Street. The urban interior is the result of a collaboration between Aesop and Parisian studio Ciguë; inspired by the unintentional aesthetic appeal of a well-ordered 1930s laboratory. Fresh plants and a beautiful skylight that fl oods the back of the store with light add a little natural beauty to the clinical space. aesop.com, 56 Cross Street, N1 2BA The art of staying beautiful...

ROXY BEAUTYI’ve had a few variations of facials in the past, but the opening statement from Jenny, my friendly therapist - ‘we are about to go on a sensorial journey’ - assures me that I’m to discover something a little different. Roxy Beauty is a smart new salon on the bustling Finchely Road, nestled in the middle of Hampstead. A sleek hair salon comprises the main space of the building, which disguises the surprise treatment rooms on the lower level. Neat and calming with a subtle soundtrack of classical music (much better than whale songs or panpipes), I rest fl at on a bed and have three different scents wafted under my nose and am asked to identify which one I am most drawn to. The holistic brand Aveda is used at Roxy and their products and treatments focus on restoring balance to the mind and body by engaging all fi ve senses. The botanical products smell divine and Jenny is methodical in her approach to the facial; applying light pressure, various creams, hot fl annels and sprays over the course of a very relaxing hour. It’s indulgent, but at the same time feels like I’m putting goodness back into my skin; a goodness that commuting and London life strips away. It’s a shame to travel back to the offi ce afterwards, but at least I now know about this surprise little beauty centre, for future lunchtime r’n’r. wrinkles, brown spots/pigmentation, open or congested pores, acne scarring, rosacea and general imperfections.

Following the exfoliation, my face is hydrated with an AHA serum which proves key - it glides over the dermis and seeps in. Thought to have a profound effect on keratinization (the 28-day cycle whereby the live cells or keratinocytes at the bottom layer of the epidermis gradually become harder as they work their way up to the surface), AHAs improve the overall look of the skin and are often used in chemical peel procedures. When I tell Bridget that I usually use a Laboratoire Garnier moisturiser I am duly ticked off - she tells me that products like that slide off the skin so that while they claim to be oil-free, that are also missing the point completely - to hydrate. More bad news - rich creams can prove too greasy and only serve to congest the pores - and

There are some things you don’t discover until your thirties. Before then, your priorities

are different. Partying takes precedence and, while most young people have skin worries at some point, few are the twenty-somethings who casually drop lines like ‘my facialist says’ into everyday conversation. Only in your third decade does encroaching age and its hooligan horde of tell-tale signs - crow’s feet, laughter lines and spider veins - allow you to see things differently.

This month the virtues of microdermabrasion were revealed to me. For years I have been battling with temperamental skin that’s subject to outbreaks (especially around PMS time) and suffers from being oily but dehydrated. It has taken until now - and my visit to Destination Skin - to find that I can improve my chances of clearer skin and that so far, my cleansing regime has not been helping matters. It’s not just that I found microdermabrasion to be one of the most effective treatments you can try; it’s that I also learnt more about my skin type. The process itself uses suction and grain to remove the topmost layers of dead skin cells, thus enhancing the production of collagen (the main constructive protein found in animal connective tissue). The natural cubic salts not only exfoliate but have cleaning properties - killing bacteria and leaving the skin more open to absorb vitamins. It can be used in conjunction with numerous prescription facials, skin peels or laser, IPL and rejuvenation treatments. My practitioner Bridget, recommends for example, the Agera Vitamin C Peel - a catch-all wonder-treatment that can improve ageing skin, fine lines and

there, Bridget has unravelled the reason behind my latest outbreak.

The skin is a little red and sore for about 6 hours afterwards and you’re advised to avoid make up the next day (or apply a mineral base), but skin is left silky smooth, younger and plumper-looking. And unlike facials which claim to achieve the same effect, there’s no blemish surge afterwards. I come away with a bottle of the magic Dermaquest Advanced B5 serum; formulated with Sodium Hyaluronate it holds 1000 times its molecular weight in hydration - exactly what I need. In this way, moisturising less is actually more.

On my next trip to Destination Skin, I try the Omnilux Light Therapy. If you haven’t heard of this amazing procedure, take note. And if, like me, you sometimes resort to sunbeds in an attempt to deal with outbreaks of bad skin, it’s time to

stop. I was aware of the dangers, but the lack of a decent alternative meant I often felt it was the only option; now I know better. The therapy is a bit more expensive than a sunbed, yes - but it’s worth it. The benefits are the same - the treatment harnessing the power of light to clear acne, allowing active ingredients to penetrate the skin - but the harmful ultraviolet rays are omitted. Not only is the therapy used for treating acne, it can reverse the negative side effects of sunbeds, correcting signs of ageing while lifting and tightening saggy skin. What could be more perfect? I’ve since vowed never to crisp myself on a sunbed again - and I can’t wait to see the effects of this new regime take hold. Maybe next time I’ll book a facial with the treatment... power to the wow.

3 CURRY HOTSPOTS

How did you come to work at Trishna as a sommelier?I joined Trishna almost two years ago. I started off as front of house and back offi ce and during that time I was working closely with our sommelier. I’ve always been passionate about wine and I soon realised that that was the route I wanted to take.

Do you have to train to become a professional sommelier? There is no offi cial stage to be able to have the title of sommelier, but there are a number of certifi cation levels available. I study at the Wine & Spirit Education Centre (WSET). Right now I’m at the diploma level, after that it’s the Master of Wine.

What’s the course like? It’s quite fun actually. The teachers go through grapes, regions and wine-making techniques and they touch on food and wine-matching as well. The good thing about the course is that in order to learn how to pick out the different components in wine they make you taste quite contrasting bottles so that you can fi gure it out and see the comparisons.

You have a huge cellar at Trishna, what are some of your most popular bottles from the wine list? We have over 200. I’m really keen on Austrian wine with Indian food - a match made in heaven.

Do you fi nd that people don’t think to pair Indian food with wine as they would with say, Italian cuisine?Absolutely. People will always think to order beer or lassi. Straight away you’re fi ghting against that. Our food is not typical Indian food, it’s a little bit lighter, so that makes a difference.

How do you decide on what to stock in the Trishna wine cellar? The fi rst thing to consider when choosing wine is ‘will it go with our food?’ I work with our chef and recommend a wine with every dish so to be able to do that I would have had to taste the dish with certain wines. I’m quite into buying unusual wines but of course, you have to be able to explain it to the customer and sell it to them in order to take them out of their comfort zone.

What do you think are some up-and-coming countries in the wine industry? At the moment I’m very keen on Greek wines. Actually, India is up and coming as well. There’s a lot of rubbish Indian wines but they are getting better, so that’s quite exciting.

They’re certainly not shy with ingredients; we can’t wait to try the Mediterranean Scrub (containing such exotic nuances as Korean pear, sharan fruit, longan fruit, plum and date infusions). Just wow.

A self-proclaimed, self-styled ‘squatter’ restaurant that has taken up residence in Islington’s Chapel Market. Pie and mash shop by day, this 19th century building (which has a preservation order on the authentic decor) becomes a ‘restaurant’ by night serving up the finest game and seafood. We love the original features - mosaic floor, tiled walls and we wouldn’t mind finding out where they sourced the dark wooden pews from. Two thumbs up.

Among the glut of Vietnamese restaurants nestling shoulder to shoulder on the rapidly gentrifying Kingsland Road, the owners of Amici Miei are

creating a little Italy that locals are raving about. This is in addition to their pizza and pasta takeaway joint, Due Sardi, right next door. The name Amici Miei means ‘my friends’, and seems aptly amiable for a restaurant that prides itself on authentic home cooking and a welcoming, informal atmosphere.

Situated just a few minutes’ walk from Old Street tube and Hoxton overground station, amid the hangouts and bars of trendy Shoreditch, the restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere is apparent as soon as you walk through the door, with its warm and none-too-fussy dining room tastefully enlivened by exposed brickwork and wooden tables painted in pastel shades. On the night of our visit, my companion and I were greeted and shown to our table where we were immediately presented with homemade focaccia all’aglio, a bowl of emerald green olives and delicious olive oil imported from Sicily, of which the owners are especially proud. This simple but superb fare was the perfect introduction to Amici Miei’s approach -great ingredients and classic dishes prepared with an expert eye for quality and fl avour.

Our table for two felt cosy and intimate - no mean feat in a restaurant buzzing with larger parties happily sampling the very reasonable wine list. Indeed, sitting beside a window and occasionally glancing up at the veritable catwalk of forward-thinking fashionistas and business people scurrying past, my mind was cast back

to summer holidays spent in Italy, enjoying the simpler things in life.

The menu offered the usual pasta and pizza dishes, seeming to walk the line between rustic home-cooking and contemporary invention, with plenty of modern twists and adventurous fl ourishes. The staff seemed knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about the food - a welcome change from the rough and tumble of so many eateries in the area.

I began with calamari (perfectly cooked batter: thin, crisp and well seasoned) while my dining partner cooed over her burrata served with a Sicilian caponata. I felt no shame in leaning right over the table to help her dispatch the sizeable portion. The cheese was fl uffy, creamy and light; the bed of aubergine and celery gently seasoned with sweetened vinegar provided the perfect bed-fellow.

For our mains, we were fortunate to be able to sample a selection of the freshly prepared homemade pasta dishes, with the alla campidanese, spaghetti primavera and scialatielli alla pecatora (a traditional, home-cooked Neapolitan pasta served with

seafood) being of particular note.We fi nished with a shared helping

of homemade profi teroles and vanilla ice cream, washed down with a pair of delectable espresso Martinis.

Amici Miei is a welcome and successful addition to a part of town usually synonymous with cuisine from further afi eld than Italy. What the restaurant offers is simple, well-sourced, affordable and inspired food - which is sure to amount to an ever-increasing number of dedicated patrons.

THE RESTAURANT: The main foodie event is, of course, The Seafood Restaurant. Over a private dining lesson with Stein himself, he lamented today’s obsessive pursuit of Michelin stars, convincing us there is more to gastronomy than laboratory precision. His self-evident passion and natural ability with food manifests itself in dishes such as hot shellfi sh with parsley, chilli, olive oil, garlic, while the standout local cod and chips typifi es the simple approach that serves him so well. The atmosphere in The Seafood Restaurant is set against the informal feel of the central bar, where the stools are ever-populated.

THE BATHROOM: Tranquillity itself. It is clear there are only four bedrooms and bathrooms in this property, as the attention to detail is precise and perfect throughout. Choose to linger in the large bath set up in front of a garden-facing window, or relax in the walk-in rain-shower, whose powers to soothe are helped along by the Molton Brown products that line its walls. The heated mirrors bring another comforting level of sophistication.

UK GETAWAY

THE BEDROOMS: Styled by Jill Stein, there is much to envy in these solid, comfortable rooms. At the centre of the oak fl oor, a large fi replace divides the room to create two spaces: a bedroom and sitting room. There are LCD TV screens, while entertainment and temperature can be controlled by a nifty touch-screen control panel. But that’s where the modernity stops; French windows open to the sounds of the sea and within minutes, you’re back ensconced in rustic Cornwall.

THE TOWN: Although it can be fl ooded with tourists during the summer, Padstow is also a working fi shing port which keeps itself busy all year round. Visitors can be forgiven for expecting a ‘Stein-opoly’, but there are plenty of dining alternatives (there’s a surfeit of Cornish pasty shops and authentic pubs).

PRICE TAG: Bed and breakfast ranges from £225-£285 per night. 01841 532700, rickstein.com

GET THERE: An hourly service runs between Paddington and Bodmin Parkway with First Great Western, from there it is a 35-minute taxi ride.

THE HOTEL: Prospect House is in the old part of Padstow, which means the four-room bolthole, attached to the larger St Petroc’s Hotel and Bistro next door, has delightful vistas over the estuary and old town. This minute gem is the latest addition to the highly-regarded group of hotels owned by Rick and Jill Stein, the celebrated chef’s former wife but current business partner. Wonderfully private, secluded and cosy, Prospect House is that very rare of fi nds: contemporary, yet respectful of its location and very pretty indeed. Nothing seemed too troublesome for the attentive staff: a WIFI issue, for example, was solved instantly by an ‘IT department’. It’s defi nitely not a simple B&B – this is a slick operation.

TRAVEL ROUND UP

KEMPINKSI HOTEL Barbaros Bay, Bodrum, TurkeyOne would definitely be forgiven for thinking that, when surrounded by a stunning private marina, a helipad, a Six Senses Spa, an idyllic infinity pool, a long stretch of sandy beach and a whole host of tempting restaurants on the brilliant-blue Aegean coast, getting busy in the kitchen would not be in your thoughts. In fact, it’s perhaps fair to say that it would be the furthest thing from your mind. However, at the Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay, the opposite is true; there are an array of brilliant and inspiring cookery workshops. Included in these fun lessons, guests learn about authentic Aegean ingredients and the various delectable vegetables and fruits that are sold at lively local markets. The stand out speciality is its three-day course, where guests are instructed how to prepare an impressive four-course meal with fresh food purchased at the Bodrum

farmers’ market that very morning. The second day dawns and does not disappoint either, starting with a morning visit to the local farm. Then, there’s a rare opportunity to prepare and cook freshly-caught fish under the supervision and expertise of top chefs inside the hotel’s kitchens. On the third and final day, guests are given a chance to cook with pastry chef Tunca Onat. He leads a class instructing how to cook the all-important Turkish rice pudding with accompanying mint saruch. The experience is not complete without the inevitable foodie finale; as things are topped off with a scrumptious private meal. Live music on the terrace provides the final seasoning to this fabulous three day feast of culinary inspiration.

Back in 2005, he opened the eponymous Bertinet Kitchen, an award-winning cookery school slap bang in the centre of the historic city. The school runs an array of courses for food-enthusiasts of all ages and levels, so there is truly something to cater for all people and tastes. Gift vouchers can be purchased, which you may well need to help you navigate the wide range of options on offer. There are useful bread-making classes and vienoisserie tutorials, as well as lessons in how to make moist croissants, perfect pasta and mouth watering chocolate treats. MAMMA AGATARavello, ItalyWith endless views across the azure waters below, there couldn’t be a more beautiful place to get to grips with Italian gastronomy than at Mamma Agata’s School in Ravello. The words ‘hidden gem’ come emblazoned on all aprons, and couldn’t better suit this Amalfi Coast school, run by a trio made up of matriarch Agata and her daughter and son-in-law, Chiara and Gennaro. The school also doubles as their family home and together, they effortlessly engineer a day of fun, laughter, teaching and innumerable rounds of exquisite food. It’s incomparably scenic too; to access the school’s entrance, guests have first to walk through the family’s rich and heavenly orchards, lemon trees and tomato plants. In the house, the large table in the kitchen is laden with tempting dolce al limone to tuck in to when you fancy. A day with Agata (who

cooks) and Chiara (who usefully translates) is nothing short of unique: both the kitchen and the open veranda dining area overlook the stunning coast below. There’s their award-winning cookbook and some of their very own pasta and olive oil to walk away with, too, just in case parting becomes all too much. Don’t miss Gennaro’s home-made tangerine limoncello, which is a fantastic twist on the original. As a New York neophyte, no amount of hours spent watching Big Apple-based dramas can prepare one for the

And so it is that, all anticipation and with a myriad of now iconic cinematic scenes swimming around my head, I am delivered in to New York’s feverish heart, in amongst the skyline – that glut of sky-bruising buildings that are so endlessly destroyed and invaded by aliens in Hollywood blockbusters – that has long been etched into my consciousness, direct to Trump International Hotel and Tower New York. It’s one of the many – but perhaps the most iconic – residences which make up billionaire entrepreneur Donald Trump’s vast empire. First impressions? and twinkling chandeliers, is a world away from the hysteria of the jammed streets outside.

To contextualise, Trump International is positioned on the upper west side corner of Central Park, next to Columbus Circle and the Time Warner shopping centre. In short, it’s a Mecca for high-end shoppers and fine diners, and in a city where one wants to be in the

thick of the bustling action at all times, the 52-storey Trump Tower couldn’t have bagged a better spot.

The army precision with which the improbably coiffed Donald Trump has become synonymous is visible throughout the hotel, and nowhere is this attention to detail more in evidence than in our city view suite on the 17th-floor: expect the gamut of ultra luxe touches, from a Jacuzzi and iPod stereos to the floor-to-ceiling windows which frame a gorgeous view across the city.

As bewitching as the hotel is, I venture out to discover one of the world’s most thrilling metropolises,

and in a city which houses an overwhelming glut of sights, I’m thankful for the City Pass voucher book which, for $89, got me into all the big-hitting tourist attractions (think Empire State, Guggenheim, Statute of Liberty et al). But as luck would have it, Tony Conigliaro, the cocktail wizard behind 69 Colebrooke Row in Islington, happens to be in town to guide us

46

Travel DPS - New York_v2.indd 46 30/07/2012 11:51

latter is the archetypal New York hang out; not only does it sit adjacent to a weiner restaurant called Crif Dogs, making late-night munchies a breeze to shift, but access to PDT can only be gained via an antique phone booth in the corner of the restaurant. Once you step into it, you’re obliged to pick up the telephone, ask the doormen to check for your booking, and if you’re granted a green light, a hidden door from within the booth will let you in. The entry system is a treat and an experience in itself.

Cocktail quaffing is famously appetite-inducing work, so we head to Bleecker Street

and John’s Pizzeria, whose owners have been baking in brick ovens and over coal fires since 1929. But as any foodie knows, New York has no dearth of knock-your-socks-off excellent restaurants; for the legendary authentic Big Apple burger, try Brooklyn Diner (where hot dogs lobster rolls are also a must-try), and for a pre-theatre snack, try Sardi’s off Broadway, where the steaks are as good as the caricatures of celebrities that adorn the walls.

Still not sated, we make our way back to Trump International to dig in to pudding and a night-cap at the eponymous, Michelin-starred Jean Georges restaurant, before a late-night dip in the gargantuan swimming pool, and a soporific last view of the city before bed, where there is a note, alerting us to the weather for the forthcoming weekend: sunny and warm. Perfect conditions for scaling all those remaining skyscrapers.

Rates at Trump International Hotel and Tower in September start from $745 per night; trumphotelcollection.com

‘The army precision with which the improbably coiffed Donald Trump has become synonymous is visible throughout the hotel, and nowhere is this attention to detail more in evidence than in our city view suite on the 17th-floor’round some of the lesser-known hot spots, roundly proving that New York City’s gems aren’t always obvious.

First up, he (naturally) takes us to some fantastic hidden cocktail bars. At Booker & Dax in the East Village we are presented with some seriously theatrical – and high school science class-reminiscent – cocktails; Death & Co is as exclusive and achingly cool as its intriguing name – which alludes to the Volstead Act of 1919 – would suggest; and finally we stop at the hard-to-find PDT (‘Please Don’t Tell’), where the exclusivity message is somewhat explicit. It’s not hard to see why Lee Broom is so admired. His designs capture the zeitgeist: perfect pieces of popular culture that mix past and future, traditional and forward-thinking in a

style that’s as characterful as it is contemporary. It makes sense that he trained as a fashion

designer before he began to focus on interiors; similarly unsurprising is the fact that some part of his time in fashion was spent under the tutelage of Vivienne Westwood. One look at Broom’s Salon collection, its furnishings upholstered in soft hues and adorned with stud details, shows that his time with the punk legend was not wasted.

Being named Designer of the Year at the British Design Awards in November 2011 put Broom fi rmly on the interiors map, though he it’s by no means his only award - he’s won an impressive 17 in total, while launching fi ve furniture and lighting collections and designing over 40 retail, restaurant and bar spaces (including Old Street’s Night Jar).

Frequently lauded in the press and met with pretty much constant critical acclaim, Broom’s style is intimately interconnected with the wider world of fashion - as a result, the fashion world adores him. His design for Topman’s personal shopping suite even saw him nominated for yet another British Design Award late last year.

Now, Broom has turned his attention to The Lancaster House, where the British Embassy will be hosting global business leaders during the Olympic Games. Broom is one of a handful of select designers (including Terence Conran and Ross Lovegrove) invited to decorate the landmark building - the 19th century house will be transformed into a showcase for modern British art and design. Broom, however, is the only designer to have been afforded complete autonomy over one room, kitting out the Gold Room with some of his key collection pieces, all of which serve as stunning examples of British manufacturing skill, having been designed in Broom’s own East End studio.leebroom.com, Electra House93 Rivington Street, EC2A 3AY.

The Borough of Islington sits within six square miles of north London that encompass the neighbouring areas of Angel, Highbury, Canonbury and Barnsbury.

As one of north London’s most sought after property spots, Islington is a strong area to invest in and in the last twelve months prices here have increased by up to ten per cent. Areas that are booming at present are the streets that lie behind Angel Tube station, the Barnsbury conservation area, and the ever popular Canonbury.

There is a postcode price differential here between N1 (Islington) and N5 (Highbury), which used to be renowned for being Islington’s edgier neighbour. Today, although N1 properties are generally more expensive than those in N5, the gap is certainly closing.

This Zone 2 hotspot attracts young professionals, city workers and those seeking an easy commute into central London, whilst having the trendy pavements of Upper Street on their door step and a great choice of properties. Islington is a vibrant area with lively cafes, bars and bistros, excellent local shops, especially Chapel Market and Camden Passage, and a thriving cultural scene with nearby Saddler’s Wells and the Almeida. Just on Upper Street there is Don Matteo`s Breakfast Club or the Euphorium for brunch. A leisurely weekend lunch at Ottolenghi is great.

Architecturally speaking, the tree lined streets of Islington have an interesting mixture of Georgian townhouses, Victorian terraces and modern canalside developments. Canonbury is characterised by semi-detached Georgian and Victorian houses and Barnsbury has elegant terraces and sought after garden squares. Angel offers house hunters the perfect mix of the traditional period properties along with trendy living in new build developments and industrial, brownfi eld conversions. Interestingly, many of the older properties still benefi t from their original period features, inside and out - from the smart black iron railings to the sought after high ceilings, original staircases and authentic fi replaces.Kinleigh Folkhard & Hayward, Islington, kfh.co.uk

PROPERTYADVICE

I am buying a fl at and wanted to know whether I ought to be arranging buildings insurance?Generally, no. In most cases the Lease will provide for the freeholder to insure the building on a block policy. Your solicitor will need to see a copy of the up to date buildings insurance policy schedule to check that the policy is in force and will also need to see a copy of the policy wording or a summary of cover to check that the building has been insured on a comprehensive basis including all usual domestic risks. In a lot of cases, your interest as a lessee and that of your mortgage company will automatically be noted on the policy but sometimes, your solicitor will need to request that this be done.

There are some Leases which require individual lessees to insure their own fl ats and in these cases your solicitor will not only need to see details of the insurance that you have arranged but will also need to see details of the insurance for the other fl at. Fortunately, when this does occur, it tends to be just with buildings that have been divided into two fl ats so usually it is quite easy to obtain details of the other fl at owners’ policy. It is also advisable in these cases to take out something called an insurance indemnity policy which will provide cover in the event that the other fl at or fl ats fails to insure and a claim would otherwise be made on that neighbour’s policy.

RECENT OPENINGLeading London estate agents Stirling Ackroyd have opened a new offi ce in London’s prestigious Bloomsbury, covering many central areas, including Covent Garden and Holborn.

The expansion is the latest in a series of over 20 years working with commercial property, residential sales and letting services. The company have championed many desirable neighbourhoods from their earliest days of regeneration in the city. They have had a long history as specialised local estate agents for Shoreditch and Hackney, long before the borough developed into the fashionable suburb known worldwide today. Also specialising in central London locations like Bankside and Clerkenwell, Stirling Ackroyd has been credited with helping to cement London’s place as one of the world’s most dynamic property hotspots.

Bloomsbury represents an ideal new location for Stirling Ackroyd since the company has steadily developed a reputation for working with property at the more luxurious end of the market. The area is renowned for the quality of its architecture, translating into some of the capitals most stunning homes. Investors will also be eyeing the region’s potential, and surrounding areas. The team are currently working with properties ranging from the higher quality ex-local authority homes to sublimely renovated Georgian townhouses and Mews.

‘We’re extremely pleased to have secured a great unit in Bloomsbury that’s ideally placed to service the London Mid-Town market. Bloomsbury is a natural addition to Stirling Ackroyd’s network of offi ces,’ said their London property specialist Alexander Jones.Contact the team at the Bloomsbury offi ce, 020 7256 3244 www.stirlingackroyd.com
