Lévé! Get up! Experience the heartand soul of St. Lucia. A little jewel in theCaribbean where sun, surf and crystalclear water guarantees a wonderfulvacation for those seeking sun and totalrelaxation. The island however offersmuch more than that in addition togreat food and cocktails and lovelyfriendly people. I just spent a shortholiday there and will definitely returnfor a much longer one in order to take inalso the novelties offered under theCommunity based Eco-Agro Tourismproject in the DenneryMabouya Valley.This tour promises an authentic StLucian experience of music and cultureand other unique attributes. In my fewdays I was only able to pack in a lotthanks to my very generous and kind

hostess, Emma Hippolyte (ex-FAOcolleague, and now Minister ofCommerce, Business Development,Investment and Consumer Affairs). Iwas able to visit and experienceCastries, Gros Islet, the Pitons,Soufriere Sulphur springs and Village,one glorious day of sun and sea at theRodney VC Beach and a visit to anestate where the cultivation ofanthurium flowers (white, pink and red)was the main activity in addition to fruittrees. I realize that there is much muchmore to see and do there, so if you go toSt. Lucia plan at least ten days. Armedwith travel pills if you stomach does nottake winding hilly roads.Saint Lucia (French: Sainte-Lucie) isa sovereign island country in the

eastern Caribbean Sea and is part of theLesser Antilles, it has a land area of617 km2 (238.23 sq mi) and has apopulation of 174,000 (2010). Its capital

is Castries. Two Nobel laureates,Arthur Lewis, an economist, and DerekWalcott, a poet and playwright, havecome from the island. One of the Windward Islands, it wasnamed after Saint Lucy of Syracuse bythe French, the first Europeancolonizers. They signed a treaty withthe native Carib people in 1660.England took control of the island from1663 to 1667; in ensuing years, it was atwar with France 14 times and rule of theisland changed frequently (it was seventimes each ruled by the French andBritish). In 1814, the British tookdefinitive control of the island. Saint Lucia has a legal system based onBritish common law. The judiciary isindependent and conducts generallyfair public trials. The financial sectorhas weathered the global financialcrisis, but the recession has hurttourism. The local currency is the EastCaribbean dollar (XCD) and the currentexchange rate is €1.00 = XCD3.31.Representative government came aboutin 1924 (with universal suffrage from1953). In 1979, Saint Lucia became anindependent state of theCommonwealth of Nations associatedwith the United Kingdom. The islandnation celebrates this every year with apublic holiday. It is also a member of laFrancophonie.

History of Saint LuciaEuropeans first landed on the island ineither 1492 or 1502 during Spain’s earlyexploration of the Caribbean. In 1643 aFrench expedition under the directionof Jacques du Parquet, the Governor ofMartinique, established the firstpermanent European settlement on theisland. The Governor De Rousselansigned a treaty with the local Caribpeople in 1660. Like the English andDutch on other islands, the Frenchbegan to develop the land for thecultivation of sugar cane as acommodity crop on large plantations.After the Seven Years’ War betweenGreat Britain and France the Treaty ofParis (10 February 1763) confirmed anexchange of colonial territories by thesignatories.When the British acquired the island,planters were trying to use the Carib

population as labourers. The Britishimported enslaved Africans as workers.Many Carib had died because of lack ofimmunity to Eurasian diseases, such assmallpox and measles. Others died fromoverwork and maltreatment by theEuropeans. Caribbean conditions wereharsh, and many African slaves died aswell, requiring continued importation ofnew captives. The British continued toimport slaves until they abolished thetrade in 1808. By that time, people ofethnic African and (less so) Caribdescent greatly outnumbered those ofethnic European background.Saint Lucia continued to be contestedby France and Great Britain until theBritish secured it in 1814, following itswar with the United States. Saint Luciawas considered part of the BritishWindward Islands colony.In the mid-

Twentieth century, it joined the WestIndies Federation (1958–62) when thecolony was dissolved. In 1967, SaintLucia became one of the six members ofthe West Indies Associated States, withinternal self-government. In 1979 itgained full independence under SirJohn Compton. Compton, of theconservative United Workers party(UWP), served as prime minister from1982 to 1996, after which he wassucceeded by Vaughn Lewis.Kenny Anthony of the Labour Partywas prime minister from 1997 to 2006,when the UWP, again led by Compton,won control of parliament. In May 2007,after Compton suffered a series ofministrokes, Finance and ExternalAffairs Minister Stephenson Kingbecame acting prime minister. Hesucceeded as prime minister afterCompton died in September 2007. InNovember of 2011, the honorableKenny Anthony was re-elected as primeminister.Saint Lucia is a Commonwealth realm;Queen Elizabeth II is the Head of Stateof Saint Lucia, represented on theisland by a Governor-General.Executive power, however, is in thehands of the Prime Minister and hiscabinet. The prime minister is normallythe head of the party commanding thesupport of the majority of the membersof the House of Assembly, which has 17seats. The other chamber of Parliament,the Senate, has 11 appointed members.Saint Lucia is a two-partyparliamentary democracy. Five politicalparties participated in the November28, 2011 General Election. Population of Saint LuciaThe population of 174,000 (in 2010) isevenly divided between urban and ruralareas, although the capital, Castries,contains more than one-third of the

population. Saint Lucia’s population ispredominantly of African and mixedAfrican-European descent, with a smallIndo-Caribbean minority (3%).Members of other or unspecifiedethnicity groups, account for about 2%of the population. The official languageis Rnglish however (Kwéyò or SaintLucian Creole French), which is aFrench-based Creole colloquiallyreferred to as “Patwah” (Patois), isspoken by 95% of the population. ThisAntillean Creole is used in literatureand music, and is gaining officialacknowledgement. It is derived chieflyfrom French and West Africanlanguages, with some vocabulary fromCarib and other sources. About 70% of the population is RomanCatholic, influenced from the days ofFrench Catholic rule andevangelization. Most of the rest belongto other Christian denominations,including Seventh-day Adventisms(7%), Pentecostalism (6%), Anglicanism

(2%), Evangelical Christianity (2%), andthe Baptist faith; in addition, about 2%of the population adheres to theRastafari movement. There is one public hospital and oneprivate hospital in St Lucia. There was asecond, but it was burnt down in a fire inthe early hours of September 9, 2009.

Culture of Saint LuciaThe culture of Saint Lucia has beeninfluenced by African, East Indian,French and English heritage.

FestivalsSaint Lucian cultural festivals includeLa Rose and La Marguerite, the firstrepresenting the Rosicrucian order, andthe second representing Freemasonry.This can be seen on a mural painted byDunstan St Omer, depicting the holytrinity of Osiris, Horus and Isis.Each May since 1991, Saint Lucia hashosted an internationally renownedJazz Festival. The biggest festival of theyear is the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival.Held in early May at multiple venuesthroughout the island, it draws visitorsand musicians from around the world.

Traditionally in common with otherCaribbean countries, Saint Lucia held acarnival before Lent. In 1999, thegovernment moved Carnival to mid-July to avoid competing with the muchlarger Trinidad and Tobago carnival and

so as to attract more overseas visitors.Together with Caribbean music genressuch as Calypso, Soca, Dancehall,Reggae, Compas, Zouk and Salsa, SaintLucia has a strong indigenous folkmusic tradition. A popular folk dance isthe Quadrille.In May 2009, Saint Lucianscommemorated the 150th Anniversaryof West Indian Heritage on the island.

Cricket is a popular sport in the country.Seen here is the Beausejour CricketStadium which hosts internationalcricket matches for the West Indies.

EducationThe Education Act provides for free andcompulsory education in Saint Luciafrom the ages of 5 to 15. Public spendingon education was at 5.8 % among the2002–2005 GDP. Saint Lucia has oneuniversity; University of the WestIndies Open Campus, and a few medicalschools.

Tourism in Saint LuciaTourism is vital to Saint Lucia’seconomy. Its economic importance isexpected to continue to increase as themarket for bananas becomes morecompetitive. Tourism tends to be moresubstantial during the dry season(January to April). Saint Lucia tends tobe popular due to its tropical weatherand scenery and its numerous beachesand resorts.

Popular tourist attractions include adrive-in volcano, the Sulphur Springs(in Soufrière), the Botanical Gardens,the Majestic twin Peaks “The Pitons”, aworld heritage site, the rain forests, andPigeon Island National Park, which ishome to Fort Rodney, an old Britishmilitary base.The majority of tourists visit SaintLucia as part of a cruise. Most of theirtime tends to be spent in Castries,although Soufriere, Marigot Bay andGros Islet are popular locations to visit.

Other Tourist attractions include: Boattours, aerial tours, Saint Lucia HeritageTours, Visits to St. Lucia National Trust(Pigeon Island National Landmark)was once a naval station and among themilitary remnants you now find well laidtrails passing through attractive lawnsand wooden areas to reveal captivatingvistas and cozy coves. The ForestryDepartment also organizes hikes intothe lush rainforest, also birdwatchingtours – qualified guides are provided forthese activities. Rainforest sky-ridescreates a tranquil and enrichingexperience, skimming along therainforest canopy in open-air gondolaswith knowledgeable guides.

Other sites of interest are: theDiamond Falls and Mineral Bathswhich offer a glimpse of beautifullydesigned tropical gardens sculptedaround the picturesque waterfall andmineral baths. Toraille Waterfall

offers a short walk along a path edgedwith tropical blossoms to a coolwaterfall where bathing is permitted.La Sikwi Sugar Mill provides acomplete overview of the sugarindustry, once the crop of the island,inside a marvellous example of a sugarfactory set within an attractive garden.Rhythm of Rum takes place at theSaint Lucia Distilleries and blendshistory with a sampling of the island’saward winning rums and liqueurs.

Scuba Diving haven with many sites toadmire the underwater brauty andlandscapes among which: AnseChastenet Reef, Anse La Raye, CoralGardens, Fairy Land, KeyholePinnacles, the Lesleen Shipwreck(165 foot freighter which lies upright in60 feet of water), Superman’s flightcontinues along the wall at the base ofthe Petite Piton where it falls off to 1600feet in depth - drivers drift along thecurrent emulating the super hero’sflight between the Pitons in SupermanII. There are many dive shops providingequipment to subs for rental.

Deep Sea Fishing. Captain Mike offersa great day at sea and the chance ofcatching a big one i.e. marlin, swordfishor Dorado.

Kitesurfing and Windsurfing at VieuxFort where an almost continuous breezeprovides the ideal conditions ■

Buone vacanze…. Ma al rientro, impara anche tu a staccare la spina..

Sono arrivate le tanto agognatevacanze. Aspettiamo questo momentotutto l’anno. Le valigie sono pronte,

come la lista delle ultime cose da portarsidietro per vivere giornate spensierateall’aria aperta. Come si fa a vivere rintanatial chiuso in spazi sempre più piccoli in cittàsempre più grandi? Me lo chiedo ogni voltache mi accingo a partire per raggiungere ilsole che accarezza la pelle e riscalda neipomeriggi freschi e leggeri in riva al mareimmobile, turchese… Lá dove, dietro gliocchi chiusi, il sole diventa buio illuminato,acceso.. In vacanza il sole lo prendiamonoi…. In città ti prende lui mentre ti muovinel mezzogiorno di fuoco della pausapranzo, nell’afa insopportabile della cittàinquinata.. Il sole brucia ed acceca quandocammini sui marciapiedi assolati e respiri leesalazioni che provengono dal bitume dellestrade… Che bello vivere il passare deltempo illuminato dal sole che sorge etramonta sul mare. Ogni vacanza è unapiccola storia di fuga dalla città, dimigrazione verso un territorio in cui naturae relax rendono la vita una piacevoleavventura da assaporare giorno per giorno,in cui potersi ricaricare di energia. C’è chi

al mare preferisce la campagna, in cui la vitasi apre all’energia degli spazi aperti, allanatura. C’è chi ama fare lunghe passeggiatetra i frutteti delle valli o escursioni in quota,chi ama cimentarsi in attività sportive, chifare divertenti pic nic nei prati… Dopo unanno sempre di corsa, con la mentecostantemente occupata dagli impegni dellagiornata, è arrivato il momento di staccarela spina e prepararci a vivere le giornateall’insegna della lentezza, per scoprire tuttii colori ed i sapori della natura, seguire iritmi biologici e naturali e dimenticarequelli imposti dalle lancette. Stiamo perassaporare il sogno di un mondo senzafretta, senza agende colme di appuntamenti,senza orologi e scadenze. Stiamo perraggiungere luoghi in cui faremo di meno,non saremo sempre connessi, osserveremoil sole calare dietro gli alberi, ascolteremo ilcinguettío degli uccelli, assaporeremo labellezza di ció che ci circonda, mangeremolentamente e meglio, ci concentreremo suuna cosa alla volta, respireremo e nonavremo comandamenti… Ma il tempo passain fretta ed una volta rientrati in città, bastaun solo giorno per annullare i benefici effetti

delle vacanze. Si ricomincia con la casa, illavoro, i mille impegni quotidiani, le lavatricida fare…. E lo stress risale pericolosamenteai livelli di guardia…. Ed allora? Dobbiamoimparare a prenderci delle pause perregalare alle nostre giornate una marcia inpiù. Cioè abituarci ad affrontare le giornatesenza ansia, cercare di continuare a viverein città come se si fosse in ferie, ritagliarsidegli spazi per fare passeggiate all’ariaaperta, cercando di dedicare tempo a cióche fa bene al corpo ed allo spirito. Coloroche non riescono mai a staccare la spina,possono intraprendere un percorso che mirialla conoscenza di se stessi ed all’unionearmoniosa di mente e corpo. Condizioneindispensabile per conquistare equilibrio eserenità e tenere alla larga stress ed ansiequotidiane. Tra le varie tecniche in usopotrete trovare quella che più si avvicina alvostro modo di essere.

HATHA YOGA E RAJA YOGAIl corpo è lo strumento che ci consente dilavorare su noi stessi. Se siamo deboli edoloranti, sicuramente ci sentiremoabbattuti o insoddisfatti, difficilmenteavremo la mente libera e serena. Lo HathaYoga, delle posture mantenute in manierastabile e confortevole con l’aiuto dellaconsapevolezza del respiro, consente a tuttidi migliorare lo strumento, la propria“macchina lavoro”. Per mezzo di flessioni,estensioni e torsioni, diamo tonicità allamuscolatura ed elasticità alle giunture,miglioriamo la funzionalità di tutti gli organiinterni del corpo. Con il Pranayamautilizziamo i metodi per attivare e regolarela forza vitale e con ciò ottenere uno statopiù elevato di energia vibratoria. Lostrumento di lavoro è il respiro, che fa daponte fra il corpo e la mente, coordina imovimenti, modula lo sforzo e lenisce letensioni. I risultati così ottenuti dal corpo e

dal respiro portano beneficio alla mente, chesi calma ed è libera di rivolgersi a sé.Possiamo allora praticare il Ritiro dei Sensi(Pratyahara) e la Concentrazione (Dharana)e, quando quest’ultima permane stabilecome spazio vuoto fra un pensiero ed il suosuccessivo, accade la Meditazione (Dhyana).Allora per tutti qualcosa cambia…….edentriamo nella pratica del Raja Yoga, perottenere una mente chiara e limpida, ingrado di osservare se stessa.

YOGA AYURVEDA

Lo Yoga è una scienza completa della vitache ha avuto origine in India migliaia di annifa. E’ il più antico metodo di crescitapersonale del mondo comprendente il corpo,la mente e lo spirito. Gli antichi Saggi delloyoga possedevano una profondacomprensione della natura umana e di tuttociò di cui l’uomo ha bisogno per vivere inarmonia con se stesso e con ciò che locirconda.

Questa scienza della lunga vita, è l’anticadisciplina indiana che utilizza erbe, minerali,oli per curare vari disturbi comuni. E’fondamentale per la dottrina filosoficaayurvedica la convinzione che noi tuttipossediamo tre dosha o umori: il VATA(vento o aria), il PITTA (fuoco-bile) e ilKAPHA (muco-acqua-terra). Questi treumori insieme formano il TRIDOSHA e lamalattia non è altro che il risultato di undisequilibrio tra di essi. L’ayurveda cercaappunto di riportare l’equilibrio, e quindianche la buona salute.

IL METODO PILATES E’un sistema di allenamento sviluppatoall’inizio del ‘900 da Joseph Pilates. Traendoispirazione da antiche discipline orientaliquali Yoga, (India) e Do-In, (Giappone),Pilates ha scritto almeno due libri in cuiillustra il suo metodo: Return to Lifethrough Contrology e Your Health: ACorrective System of Exercising ThatRevolutionizes the Entire Field of PhysicalEducation. Pilates ha chiamato il suometodo Contrology, con riferimento al modoin cui il metodo incoraggia l’uso della menteper controllare i muscoli. È un programma

di esercizi che si concentra sui muscoliposturali, cioè quei muscoli che aiutano atenere il corpo bilanciato e sono essenziali afornire supporto alla colonna vertebrale. Ilmetodo è indicato anche nel campo dellarieducazione posturale. In particolare, gliesercizi di Pilates fanno acquisireconsapevolezza del respiro edell’allineamento della colonna vertebralerinforzando i muscoli del piano profondo deltronco, molto importanti per aiutare adalleviare e prevenire mal di schiena. Conquesto metodo di allenamento non sirinforzano solo gli addominali ma sirinforzano anche le fasce muscolari piùprofonde vicino alla colonna e intorno allepelvi. Il punto cardine del metodo è latonificazione e il rinforzo del Power House,cioè tutti i muscoli connessi al tronco:l’addome, i glutei, gli adduttori e la zonalombare. Gli esercizi che si eseguono sultappetino (Pilates Mat Work) devono esserefluidi e perfettamente eseguiti, devonoinoltre essere abbinati ad una correttarespirazione.

Il metodo Pilates non ha marchio diregistrazione per cui ogni insegnante dieducazione fisica motoria lo può adattare alsuo stile e alla sua personalità, ma si deverifare ai principi basilari del Pilates chesono sei:1 - la Respirazione sempre ben controllata eguidata dall’aiuto dell’insegnante come nellapratica dello Yoga (nello specifico nel Pilatessi inspira nel cominciare l’esercizio e nelmomento dello sforzo maggiore si espira, adifferenza dello Yoga, si inspira con il naso esi espira sia con il naso che con la bocca eper ogni esercizio vi è un preciso ritmo); 2 - il Baricentro, sinonimo di Power House,visto come centro di forza e di controllo ditutto il corpo; 3 - la Precisione, ogni movimento deveavvicinarsi alla perfezione, un lavoro acircuito chiuso dove l’insegnante deve averecontinui feedback dall’allievo; 4 - la Concentrazione, massima attenzione econcentrazione in ogni esercizio, la mentedeve essere il supervisore per ogni singolaparte del corpo; 5 - il Controllo, controllo su ogni parte delcorpo, non si devono effettuare movimenti

sconsiderati e trascurati; 6 - la Fluidità, questo principio è la sintesi ditutti i concetti precedenti.

FLOWOORKE’ un tipo di ginnastica che si rifà allo Yogaed al Pilates, quindi alla respirazione cinese(con l’addome), respirazione Hata (con iltorace), semplici stretching a terra perpreparare i tendini e i muscoli alle asana piùintense. Studio dell’OM e rilassamentocompleto in Shavasana.

METODO FELDENKRAISE’un metodo di auto-educazione attraversoil movimento, che prende il nome dalloscienziato, fisico e ingegnere che lo ideò:Moshé Feldenkrais (1904-1984). Si basaessenzialmente sul prendere consape-volezza dei propri movimenti e dei proprischemi motori e quindi, attraverso ilmovimento, di espandere la consapevolezzadi sé nell’ambiente. È composto da sequenzedi semplici movimenti che coinvolgono ogniparte del corpo, dall’ascolto profondo dellesensazioni che essi suscitano, dallo sviluppodi nuovi modi di muoversi, atteggiarsi epercepirsi. Il metodo Feldenkrais sipropone di mettere la persona in grado diguidare il proprio apprendimento. Èaccessibile a tutte le persone, di qualsiasietà e condizione fisica.

MUSICOTERAPIALa musicoterapia è l’uso della musica e/odegli elementi musicali (suono, ritmo,melodia e armonia) da parte di unmusicoterapeuta qualificato, con un utente oun gruppo, in un processo atto a facilitare efavorire la comunicazione, la relazione,l’apprendimento, la motricità, l’espressione,l’organizzazione e altri rilevanti obiettiviterapeutici al fine di soddisfare le necessitàfisiche, emozionali, mentali, sociali ecognitive. Last Rides: Crossing the Deserts to Cairoby Peter Steele

Ninety days on the road and the 15,000 km journey from Cape Town to Cairo wascompleted during the first week of June. Two bikes and four riders – with Kristianriding the entire journey and three others sharing Anna’s bike – followed the road northfrom South Africa into Namibia before shifting direction to ride up the eastern side ofthe continent. The road tracked into Zambia and Malawi and then turned north again- into Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia, before exchanging the greenness of the EastAfrican highlands for the deserts of Sudan and Egypt.

Lake Nasser ferryboat. The Egyptian MV Sagalnaam in all her functionality berthed beneath theAswan High Dam; end of the journey and empty of passengers. Crowded or not, the night had passedrelatively uneventfully, people had been fed, processed on board by Egyptian immigration andquickly shifted into the taxis, trains and buses that met the ferry.

Transition time: ferry boat magicIf Ethiopia and Sudan represented thepoorest of the countries through which we hadtravelled (well, Malawi too), then we knewthat the ferry boat from Wadi Halfa in Sudanto Aswan in Egypt would represent a returnto the wealthier, more-orderly and easier partof the continent; and so it proved, catching upon the blog from the convenient Nile-sidewalkways of the Isis Hotel in Aswan two dayslater. This was luxury indeed.

Glance up from the laptop and there is one ofthe world’s best known views of the River Nilebelow the second cataract; the viewpopularized by the film of Agatha Christie’sstory ‘Death on the Nile’ - of the sand dunes

on the opposite bank, Elephantine Island(with the Movenpick hotel and its picturesqueSoviet-empire airport tower design, whichchanges colour at two minute intervals atnight), the feluccas that skim the river(servicing tourists) and the peaceful quietnessof the fast flowing water. Everything includingthe river itself is cleaner – all that sedimentcarried down from Ethiopia is deposited onthe upstream side of the high dam at Aswan.And there is no sign of sand blow either.

So, Aswan represented a kind of watershedfor the ride north – rich(er) world, but onewhere we knew we would soon be gettingready to finish the ride. E-mail traffic could becollected here, and we were already in contact

El Giza Pyramids, Cairo. Journey’s end. We’d camped just 10 minutes from the world’s most famousman-made structures, and couldn’t resist this final photo shot. It was six in the morning and trafficwas light.

with a couple of freight forwarders located inCairo. We had a week to get there and finalizethings. Meantime, we enjoyed a little luxury ina mid-price hotel that was, like so much of thelocal tourist industry, empty of tourists. Makeyour offer and see if management will accept it– prices are <50 percent of those posted, andwill probably continue to fall into the nextperiod. Now is the time to go to Egypt.

I was here two years back and the town wasoverflowing with tourists – the souk oppositethe hotel so full of people you could hardly findroom to move of an evening. Now you can seedown the entire length of the main walkwaysbetween the shops and kiosks, and there wereonly locals shopping. There is a surreal feel toAswan after the emptiness of Sudan; it is sopleasant, orderly and easy; a great place tolive. It also felt a deal cooler alongside theriver.

Crossing Lake Nasser to get to EgyptThe ferry crossing dominated planning andtravel once into Sudan; you have to meetschedules for departure late Wednesday

afternoon – this is a once-a-week ferry - andyou have to have tickets and freight spaceallocated for whatever you are travelling with– bike, car or truck. Push bikes you can ‘push’on to the passenger ferry (they stack them onthe roof); motorbikes are also sometimestaken on board – we were told (and we’ve readand seen them on blogs ‘pushed’ into thepassenger walkway on to the ferry boat) butthis is not the time of year for cutting cornersof this kind – there is simply too muchpressure on space. So, all vehicles are shippedon a barge that is hauled separately 550 kmdown the lake, with timing the mainconstraint. More by luck than anything else,our barge arrived the day after the ferry.(People have sometimes waited a week ormore for their vehicles.)

Whether this is always like this in May-June,who knows? We were told about flightcancellations due to sand blow/sand stormsthat had forced more people on to landtransport, but you would have to be a certainkind of traveller to undertake the three daystravel required to get to Cairo from Khartoum

Nile at Aswan. The beauty and elegance of the Nile from the veranda of the equally delightful andpristine Old Cataract Hotel – luxury accommodation at a budget price for mid-2012. But you couldenjoy the views of river and dunes for the cost of a drink – and you’d still have the place to yourselves.

by road/ferry/rail, when the convenience of atwo hour flight was available. Sure, price isimportant too, for land travel is much cheaper.

For the African long haul the Lake Nasserferry is a feature of the East African route;you cannot ‘overland’ between Egypt andSudan any other way. There are roads, forexample, south of Abu Simbel on the lake sideand along the Red Sea coast, but neither areopen to foreign overlanders. So, hassles or noton this most uncomfortable of ferries, it’s agreat experience and one that will quickly berelegated to history for the roads that willeventually open and bypass the lake. In theoryyou could simply GPS yourself across the opendeserts now – except you are not allowed to doso by the military.

It doesn’t make sense to leave those newly-built Sudanese roads unconnected to theexisting Egyptian networks that stretchnorthwards along the Nile Valley from AbuSimbel. There is simply too much truckingcommerce to be exploited. And, with regionaldevelopment, this will probably also include

the respective national rail networks (decrepitas they may be - particularly in Sudan).

Finding living spaceOur ferry was reportedly carrying close on600 people – twice the ‘normal’ numbers. (Thispresupposes a recommended/ratified numberof passengers, etc. – which is how many?)Certainly the ship was crowded and there washardly a footprint of deck space availableduring the night as people spread out andslept just about everywhere. We connectedwith a bunch of travelling companions whomwe had first met at Jungle Junction in Nairobi– a Dutch family of four and an Englishman intheir respective vehicles – and twobackpackers, respectively, from Australia andSwitzerland.

Our ‘agent’ in Wadi Halfa recommendedcapturing deck space – and this worked outreasonably well – an enclave of foreignerswalled in by overnight bags, backpacks, foodboxes and more. Others did much the same asthe deck divided into clans, families and othergroups. Voices were sometimes raised and

Road to Cairo. Cross the Eastern Deserts and you travel an empty country; only 10% of the land inEgypt is habitable. To one side the Red Sea and on the other the limitless drylands that stretch to theAtlantic Ocean almost 5,000 km away. The coastal highway ticks off the kilometres to Cairo.

words broke out between neighbouringgroups that could not always agree todemarcation lines.

For all that, our little group was an easy targetand, without a rugged ‘wall’ to protect ourspace, we were quickly encroached by themore avid, quick and experienced travellers –usually individuals - seeking a single sleepingspace. With a bedroll laid out and a body inplace there is not much that can be done toreclaim space - particularly when neither cancommunicate in the others language. Anyway,foreigners are relatively low down the peckingorder with these kinds of things – and theirresources of space are typically fair game.

Sleeping becomes a challengeActually getting to sleep and then remainingasleep was something of a challenge. The shiploudspeaker system was continually callingnamed passengers to come and collect theirdocumentation right through until after mid-night. Then, with a really quiet ship aroundyou and everyone asleep, the call to thefaithful was broadcast across the ship at 04.30.This put the toilets/ablutions under intensepressure for washing; people spending

minutes vigorously washing hands, feet andthe exposed parts of arms and legs. Queuesformed for access to the three wash basins andtwo cubicles in the latrines close to us. Woebetides those with demanding bowels (youwould literally have to hang out over the lake).

And then the entire deck was occupied bystanding and/or kneeling people runningthrough their prayer routines. The rest of us -minority atheists and Christians alike - whoremained laid out on deck were simplyswamped by the numbers. An hour’s lost sleep– probably. But, as always and in retrospect, agreat experience.

Temples at Abu SimbelUnique to ferry passengers was the night viewof the twin temples of Abu Simbel – the site towhich these Thirteenth century BC structureswere moved at the time of the construction ofthe Aswan High Dam during the 1960s. Fouror five kilometres from the ship across thedark water you could easily pick out the twotemples – the ‘Great Temple of Ramses II’with the four large seated statues, and the‘Small Temple of Hathor & Nefertari’ with thesix standing statues. It was a 10 minute

Loading the barge. We’d kept pace with a couple of vehicles since Nairobi – all heading for the sameferry for the same week. As the level of the lake dropped the ferry boat and the barge docked furtherinto the lake, which created difficulties when loading vehicles. The big 4x4 Mercedes camper bottomedout on the ramp when loading backwards. The dainty bikes had no such difficulties.

interlude of gazing at lights and colour, beforethe temples faded into the distance andbecame lost. Impossible to capture that senseof wonder and reality that represented therealpolitic of the region almost 3 500 yearsago, and the role of these temples inprojecting the dominance of Upper and LowerEgypt over the Nubian kingdoms furthersouth. Night-time photos with little hand-heldcameras are a poor substitute for real life, andcapture little of the ancient history of theselong-forgotten peoples.

Cairo via the Red Sea coastThere was a sense of ‘journey’s end’ once

across the Egypt/Sudan border and, with thebikes re-registered and fitted with Aswannumber plates, our Egyptian driving licencespacked into our document case and the bikesloaded up, Cairo was little more than a coupleof days away. You can ride the agriculturalroads north along the Nile Valley, but this is anendless avenue of small trading towns, busparks and – the motorists nightmare - speedbumps - located l00 metres apart whereverthere were settlements. So, we chose to crossthe eastern deserts and to ride north along thecoast of the Red Sea. At least the militaryconvoy system has been dropped in recenttimes, and you can travel independently.

Who could resist a dip in this most exotic ofholiday destinations – the Red Sea. Well,‘exotic’ it may be around the main centres –Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada and Safarga, forexample – but elsewhere the coastline wassimply ... desert – with small groups of oilplatforms out to sea, the occasional anddilapidated military depot (with thoseubiquitous ‘no photographs’ signs) andequally dilapidated truck stops. The closer toSuez the more pronounced the ribbondevelopment of beach parks, hotels,shopping malls and holiday homes –kilometre/hectare after kilometre/hectare –thousands of partially completed buildingssurrounded by construction sites, with themodern north-south two lane highwayskirting everything. With Egypt strugglingeconomically to come to terms with the socialrevolution of the past 18 months, now wouldbe a very good time to make an offer on thatholiday home on the Red Sea that you havealways fancied.

Sending the bikes homeCairo we already knew, but not from the seatof a motorbike. Like traffic patternseverywhere, however, you quickly get to readthe road and adapt to local practices. Thefreight agents had their main office in Maadito the south of the city – but we couldn’t findlow cost accommodation there; we looked andfailed – eventually staying at acamping/motel place just a few minutes ridefrom the El Giza Pyramids. And, as it turnedout, this was also where the company hadtheir Cairo warehouse – where we eventuallydelivered the bikes for shipping back to theUK.

There was a sense of loss from daily routineswithout a couple of bikes on hand – withdependency upon others for transport, andwith the added constraint of all that gear thatwe had to shift – 70 kg in total. And we knowthis because this is the extent of the check-inluggage allowance that we had on ourrespective Egyptair and British Midlandsflights to London.

Journey’s endThe journey ended where it began – atLondon’s Heathrow Airport; we’d departedCairo with 15 minutes between flights –Kristian leaving first – and expecting toarrive within 30 minutes of each other. The

earlier BMI flight, however, was delayed –but we didn’t know that at the time. The meetand greet family group at Terminal 3 were aswelcoming as ever, but where was Kristian? Ihad seen the flight number on the carousel,and hung around looking for him. As itturned out, there were two BMI flightsincoming from Cairo at the same time andwith similar codes that evening, and thesecond had been routed to Terminal 1. So,more last minute rushing around. Lost atLHR without our SAVNAT - it was a fittingend to a challenging three months of ridingAfrica on two wheels.

And about those bikesWe chose to ride Suzuki DKZs – singlecylinder 400 cc water-cooled, lightweight,strong and mechanically simple bikes – as apragmatic choice concerning cost, handlingand, importantly, the ability to maintain themon the road. These were real advantages too– for we were able to carry-out DIY R&Mand, when required, find Suzuki agents in themain centres with the specialized advice andskills required. These older bikes had none ofthose killer computer-based enginemanagement systems typical of modernbikes that cannot be fixed outside Europe.

And the reality of R&M? A carburettor sealin Windhoek; a couple of oil changes –Lusaka & Nairobi; tyres, headstock steeringbearings and a clutch cable in Nairobi and –a perennial issue with both bikes – dust,vibration and connections in the wiring looms– that resulted in poor charging, refusal tostart and similar issues. We had spent thelast couple of days in Cairo bump starting theyellow bike – it simply would not chargesufficient to rotate the engine fast enough onthe starter. Next time? Fit a kick start.

The bikes were not particularly comfortablefor long-distance travel – and better suitedsmaller riders. Sure we’d choose them again– they proved themselves and there is thisthing about knowing your bike.

We had bought the bikes on eBay, and thisis where they will eventually be sold; thatis unless there are any enthusiasticreaders out there looking to make a Cairoto Cape Town journey next winter ■

The 2012 HUNGER RUN

Sunday 21 October 2012

Traditional 10-km run and 5-km walk in Rome’s historic centre

The Seventh edition of the HUNGER RUN (formerly known as the “Run for Food”) is set

for Sunday, 21 October 2012, starting at 10:00 hours from Terme di Caracalla

Stadium.

The HUNGER RUN is organized by the Gruppo Sportivo Bancari Romani(GSBR) (also

technical organizers of the well known Roma-Ostia half marathon, and of the Rome edition

of the Komen Race for the Cure) on behalf of FAO, IFAD, WFP and Bioversity

International, with the collaboration of the FAO Staff Coop and Roma Capitale and the

sponsorship of United Nations Federal Credit Union (UNFCU).

Proceeds from the event will finance support to poor rural women in drought-stricken

Kenya, under a joint FAO/IFAD/WFP project there. The same project will receive support

from a fall SMS campaign being organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs jointly

with FAO, IFAD, WFP and Bioversity International.

The Multi-Cultural Caracalla Village. As in the past editions the FAO Staff Coop will

organize an international Food Fair with savoury dishes and sweets from around the

Globe, multi-cultural performances and exhibitions and entertainment for children and a

Mercatino with handicraft and souvenirs from around the world, silver and costume

jewellery. All of this in the Village inside the Stadium. All proceeeds from the sales will go

to the project in Kenya above. There will also be a Bar serving coffee and soft drinks.

Colleagues and friends,

Everyday we are subjected to the many changes around us and this makes for aninteresting approach to life - particularly where we are able to embrace these changes withenthusiasm.

Our gazette is an important means of linking our estimated readership of more than 10,000people around the globe.

The gazette belongs to you all, and it reflects that way in which we see ourselves andexchange news one-to-the-other, and it helps provide a corporate view that is different fromthe more formal public images that we present. Equally important, is the content of yourjournal - reflecting as it does the letters, articles, comments and news that is submitted byeveryone.

A new year has begun and as international civil servants our main concern is and will beto continuously fight with all our forces against hunger and poverty. We are one family,one body. However like the cells of a body we are scattered all over the world, we livedifferent experiences in various part of the globe. Space physically separates us, probablywe will never meet but we have a means of communication to know each other, to share ourhopes, our lives, our thoughts, our experiences; it is the “FAO Casa Gazette”. The EditorialCommittee of the FAO Casa Gazette would really appreciate receiving from all of youarticles (typewritten electronically), poems, short stories, pictures, drawings andpaintings.

You do not need to be a journalist, you do not need to be a professional writer, you onlyneed the goodwill and the desire to share an experience which could awake curiosity,emotions, minds, which could warm hearts, which could enrich each other. The “space”which separates us will continue to exist but for a little moment we will all feel closeness .

Is there is anything that you would like to communicate? You may be living under difficultconditions but for sure you know and meet interesting and unique people. You have theopportunity to show us interesting places and lifestyles where probably the majority of uswill never visit. If you feel you want to share an experience with your colleagues throughthe FAO Casa Gazette, we would only be too happy to publish it? Our only request is thatyour contribution should not contain offensive statements towards member countries orreligious beliefs and cultures of any population(s), nor harsh criticism of ourOrganizations. This is because the FAO Staff Coop is a social, cultural and sports entityand not political.

Chi non ha nostalgia di quelle lontane estati vissute con lasemplicità e l’allegria della giovinezza? Bene questi motivi dai ritornelli leggeri ed orecchiabili legano

con i cibi leggeri e freschi dell’estate. Sull’onda di ricordi gastromusicali, vi presento uno spartito di ricette semplici e gustose daeseguire per i vostri ospiti delle vacanze…..

PASTA AL POMODORO FRESCO PECORINO E RUCOLA

PRESENTAZIONEQuesto piatto semplicisimo, è gustoso e leggero ma sostanzioso ecompleto in quanto contiene carboidrati, proteine e verdure. E’perfetto per una bella cena dopo una giornata di nuoto e giochisulla spiaggia. Per chi ama trascorrere le vacanze al Sud, questo èil piatto ideale. Perché la rucola, il pomodoro, del buon olio di olivaextravergine ed il formaggio sono di facile reperibilità in questiluoghi. Il segreto del piatto sta nella qualità e nella freschezza degliingredienti.

INGREDIENTI: pecorino dolce, pomodori freschi, aglio, olio d’oliva, peperoncino, rucola,basilico, sale e pepe

PREPARAZIONEIn una padella soffriggere in olio di oliva due spicchi di aglio e un pezzetto di peperoncino.Tagliare a pezzetti il pomodoro fresco ed aggiungerlo per un breve tempo di cottura (5-10minuti). Salare ed aggiungere un pizzico di zucchero in modo da togliere l’acidità alpomodoro. Con un coltello di ceramica (in modo che le verdure non anneriscano) tagliarea pezzetti il basilico e le foglie della rucola. I gambi non vanno buttati ma utilizzatinell’acqua in ebollizione. Scolare gli spaghetti al dente insieme alla rucola bollita, ripassarlinella padella in cui avete preparato la salsa di pomodoro. In una ciotola sciogliere ilpecorino grattugiato con due cucchiai di acqua di cottura della pasta, versare e girare inmodo che la cremina di pecorino si sparga in modo uniforme. Prima di servire aggiungereabbondante rucola fresca ed il basilico sminuzzati. Girare bene e servire sul piatto con unabella spolvera di pepe macinato fresco.

INSALATA DI ORZO PERLATO AI GAMBERONI E ZUCCHINE

PRESENTAZIONEL’orzo è ricchissimo di proprietàcurative: è rimineralizzante delleossa, previene le affezionipolmonari e cardiovascolari, ènutriente e tonico, ed è moltoindicato in caso di gastriti, colitie cistiti. Inoltre facilita laconcentrazione e l’attivitàcerebrale in quanto contienemagnesio, fosforo, potassio,vitamina PP, E calcio e ferro.L’orzo perlato è favoloso edindicato per tutte le stagioni…questa ricetta è praticamente

una insalata di orzo e deve essere tenuta in frigo fino a mezz’ora prima del suo utilizzo.Per un pranzo in riva al mare, invece del solito panino, è preferibile optare per cibi freschie leggeri. Questa pietanza, nutriente e gustosa, risulta piacevolmente fresca e digeribile.E si puó preparare la sera per consumarla in spiaggia il giorno successivo. Bastaorganizzarsi con una borsa frigo, piatti e posate di plastica…. Ed una generosa porzionedi frutta fresca per completare il pasto.

INGREDIENTI: Orzo perlato – zucchine - gamberoni cotti al vapore – Olio d’oliva –pomodori – rucola – mais.

PREPARAZIONE

Per preparare l’insalata d’orzo iniziate facendo lessare l’orzo nell’acqua bollente secondo

le indicazioni sulla confezione. Nel frattempo, lavate i pomodorini e tagliateli in quarti,

tagliate a julienne le zucchine e fatele saltare in olio d’oliva, cuocete i gamberetti al vapore

e sminuzzate un ciuffetto di rucola fresca. Quando l’orzo sarà cotto, (ricordatevi che deve

rimanere un po’ croccante), scolatelo bene e fatelo saltare nella padella in cui avete cotto

le zucchine. Togliete il tutto dal fuoco, fate raffreddare, e poi unite i pomodorini, la rucola,

il mais, i gamberoni, l’olio d’oliva, sale e pepe. Lasciate riposare il tutto prima di

consumare.

FILETTO DI TONNO AI PEPERONI

PRESENTAZIONEIl tonno lega perfettamente con un contorno di peperoni grigliatio arrostiti al forno. Questo binomio è vincente se arricchito conpomodoro fresco, prezzemolo, capperi ed olive. E’ preferibilepreparare il contorno vegetale almeno un’ora prima di servirloin modo che si insaporisca. Quando verrá adagiato sullescaloppe di tonno appena scottato, gli conferirà un saporedavvero speciale.

INGREDIENTI: filetto di tonno fresco – peperoni arrostiti – olive – capperi – pomodoripachino – acciughe – cipolla fresca- aglio - prezzemolo - olio d’oliva – sale e pepe.

PREPARAZIONEScottare un filetto di tonno che deve rimanere tenero e rosa all’interno. Tagliatelo ascaloppe e servite con un contorno preparato con striscioline di peperoni arrostiti espellati, pomodorini pachino tagliati a pezzetti, capperi, olive, un’acciuga sminuzzata,qualche fettina di aglio ed abbondante prezzemolo. Il tutto verrá adagiato sulle scaloppedi tonno e guarnito con fette di cipollotto fresco ed una bella spolverata di pepe macinatofresco.

INSALATA DI PATATE ALL’ANETO

INGREDIENTI: Patate, olio extra vergine di oliva,maionnaise, aneto, cipollotto fresco, sale e pepe a piacere.

PRESENTAZIONEQuesta insalata fredda di patate condita con cipolla fresca,aneto e maionnaise è perfetta per arricchire una cena abase di carne o pesce e verdure grigliate, soprattutto se

non si ha voglia di preparare la pasta. Le verdure grigliate e l’insalata di patate si possonopreparare la sera prima o la mattina presto e lasciarle in frigo. Dopo una giornata all’ariaaperta, per una cena veloce, basta cuocere carne o pesce ed accompagnarli con questisplendidi contorni. L’aneto ed il cipollotto conferiscono a questo piatto un gusto delicato edoriginale.

PREPARAZIONE Lessare le patate, spellarle, tagliarle e condirle con olio di oliva stemperato in un cucchiaiodi maionnaise. Aggiungere sale, aneto e fettine di cipollotto fresco.
