August 2013 Brandenburg United Methodist Church Steeple Bell One of the things that led to Method- ism’s early success was founder John Wesley’s determination that all those disciples under his care would be part of a small group experience. Through the various classes and bands, he was able to provide early Methodist Christians with places of belonging and accountability. As the Methodist movement grew, both in England as a revival movement within the Anglican Church and in America as a Church on its own, Wesley organized his peo- ple and kept track of them through small groups. Small-group ministry is at the core of who we are as Method- ist Christians! In fact, I find it interest- ing that so many of our U.M. churches have undergone exceptional growth and revival within the past two dec- ades by adapting the “purpose-driven” principles of California’s Saddleback Baptist Church...which focuses on at least two very Wesleyan principles: ac- countability and small groups! In fact, the single largest church in our own annual conference is now Broadway UMC in Bowling Green, where Pastor Rick Bard has stayed true to a purpose- driven/small group-led model. As I mentioned on a recent Sunday, I believe Brandenburg UMC must and will grow larger by growing smaller...that we will flourish when every single BUMC adult and child is assigned to, cared for by, and accountable to a particular small L.I.F.E. (Living In Fellowship Everyday) group. By definition, a L.I.F.E. Group is any small group that helps us realize life more abun- dant in Jesus...where meetings are held regularly, where the scriptures are taught and discussed, where its members are loved and accepted and missed when ab- sent, and where they grow in Christ over time. Since our church family is now scat- tered out over three different worship serv- ices, it becomes all the more important to have things that we are all engaged in...a common excperience for every person in Brandenburg UMC...and I feel L.I.F.E. groups will help provide that. Our Sunday School classes are probably the largest of our L.I.F.E. groups, and a big outreach is planned to offer that same experience for others at our Wednesday evening mid- week gathering. You’ll be hearing more about L.I.F.E. Groups in the coming days and weeks, so please pray about where and how you can get involved in one, ei- ther as a leader or member! – Bro. Spotlight on Children’s Ministries– Val Goins

The summer has been terrific! We went Running With the Giants and learned a lot about God dur-ing our Amazing Race. We learned that these giants may have the following to speak to us today:

Noah: Listen to GodAbraham: Follow GodMoses: Don’t QuitElijah: God ProtectsRuth: God Rewards UsDavid: Have FaithEsther: Speak TruthJoseph: God Knows Your Dreams

The last night of the Amazing Race is Sunday, August 4, at 6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for all the hard work these kids have done over the summer. August brings

us to the series called “Be Bold.” We will be talk-ing about prayer, service and giving on the Sun-

days in August. We will continue memory verses and begin taking an offering as we learn this month about being bold for God.

As everyone comes back from summer vaca-tions and heads back to school, we expect attend-ance to pick back up. I need vol-

unteers for the fall in the nursery and children’s church areas both as teachers and assistants. Many thanks to those who have already volunteered to help in the nursery in August. The fall Halftime session will kick off Satur-day, August 24, with a daylong Family Fun Fest, and classes and groups for all ages will resume Wednesday, August 28. Please stay tuned for more information about children’s programming for the fall. Kids Day Out will resume in September.

Since it’s August, I must be looking at Christmas music! It is hard to believe that school is about to start already, but it won’t be long. Speaking of things starting, the Chancel Choir will begin rehearsing on Wednesday, August 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. We will return to the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, September 8. If you have been considering joining our choir, now is a great time. Please join us for our first re-hearsal on August 14. No auditions required.
