St. John Ambulance AustraliaAdding Another Enthusiast to the Repertoire: from Symantec

For more than 125 years, St John Ambulance Australia has been active, providing first aid, disaster relief services, and other humanitarian assistance throughout the country. St John Ambulance Australia takes its inspiration from the Knights of St John, who offered care and shelter to pilgrims and crusaders in medieval times.

St John Ambulance Australia makes every dollar count is by using Symantec™. cloud technologies. Three St John state organisations—in Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia—use Symantec Web Security.cloud and Email Security.cloud; two use Symantec Enterprise Vault™.cloud; and two use Symantec Endpoint Protection.cloud. New South Wales: Fewer Servers, More Productivity

With just two IT staffers supporting 105 permanent and casual employees and 4,500 volunteers, St John Ambulance (NSW) is always looking to simplify its environment and improve productivity with technology. Its senior managers use iPhones, and some have iPads. Workers in nine satellite offices use Citriz desktop virtualisation to access databases and business applications in the organisation’s Burwood headquarters. And all first aid training materials— about 80,000 people per year receive St John first aid training in the state—are digital. “Even when we run a little volunteer class in some remote corner of the state, the trainer has a laptop with a little projector that they use to run the class,” says Barney Lee, IT manager for St John Ambulance (NSW).

So in 2010, when Lee had a chance to improve service while reducing overhead by deploying Symantec Email Security.cloud, Web Security.cloud, and Symantec Endpoint Protection.cloud, he leapt at the chance. “Symantec is our first step into the cloud,” Lee says. “We’ve gone from maintaining three different applications and pieces of hardware to nothing, basically.”

Specifically, Lee retired web filtering, email filtering, and antivirus appliances from his data center and replaced them with Symantec.cloud solutions. “It was a good time to consolidate, to get everything into one basket, and not have separate vendors for all our different processes,” he says. Because Lee had used Symantec Backup Exec™ for many years at St John Ambulance (NSW), he trusted the Symantec brand. “There isn’t much in the way of reference checks that need to be done with a firm like Symantec,” Lee notes.

Lee praises Symantec Web Security.cloud’s fine-grained policy setup and powerful reporting. Different groups with varying levels of Web access have been established, and access for those groups has been fine tuned over time. “The groups have made it easier to report on where people go online and how long they spend in a particular place,” Lee says. “We can also track how many megabytes of data they download, we can cost-control that if we want to. From a reporting perspective, and how the software works, it’s exactly what we want.”

Managing cloud-based email filtering is also easy, and the performance is excellent. “With Symantec, mail scanning is a lot faster,” he says. “And the percentage of spam that gets through is very minimised over what it previously was.”

Also minimised: the workload that comes with maintaining antivirus, antispam, and web filtering servers in-house. “We typically replace server hardware after four or five years,” Lee explains. “And then McAfee or Websense would release a new version of their software, so we needed to replace that. Then there was upgrading from Windows Server 2003 to 2008, and Windows patches every week. That sort of thing used to take up a lot of our time. So with three less servers to look after, that’s a huge reduction on our administrative duties.”
