Robert Selbie

On Wednesday 3rd July, a number of villagers and members of the Hurstbourne

Priors' cricket team attended a ceremony in

the cricket pavilion, for the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the many years of

service Robert gave to the village, Parish

Council and Recreation Committee.

Mark Williams said a few words outlining Robert's many achievements during his life in Hurstbourne Priors. The plaque was then

unveiled by his daughter Doone Pellow who is

pictured with Mike, Robert's son.

Doone and Mike responded by saying how

much their father had enjoyed his involvement in village activities and then we

all raised our glasses in a toast to Robert.

Cats Protection

Calling all Cat Lovers

Now, more than ever, Cats

Protection is calling on cat lovers everywhere to help.

How? By offering a loving

home to one of the many, many cats currently in our care.

The last few months have seen a considerable reduction in the number of cats being rehomed.

This is having a significant knock-on effect on

how many new cats we can take into care. We simply cannot find space for all those needing

homes, unless we can find more homes for those already being looked after by our fosterers.

If you are reading this and can offer a loving, stable home to a cat, then please do get in touch.

We have cats of all ages, types and

This month’s cat is Tinkerbelle, a loveable young cat who is full of life, and a natural talker. She is

equally happy curled up on a lap, or exploring a garden. Give her a warm windowsill to watch the

world go by and

she is very content. She

came to the

charity not totally used to a

home

environment, but shows signs

of fitting in well

with other cats. Given her

natural energy though, a home

without another

cat may be more suitable.

Here's a few very helpful tips

regarding Home Security, especially if you are going away

on holiday......

If you are going on holiday this summer, it is essential you take

the relevant precautions to make sure your home is safe and secure from burglars. Burglars target

houses that look empty, especially during the

holiday period. Here is some advice on how to ensure your home is kept safe and secure so you

don’t come home to a nasty shock:

• Lock up – lock all windows and doors and

any sheds, garages or outbuildings. Remember to set your alarm if you have

one.

• Make your home look as though it is occupied, perhaps get a trusted neighbour

to visit your house once a day to move the

post, pull the curtains and turn any lights on/off. Alternatively, you could use timer

switches for your lights and the Royal Mail

‘Keepsafe’ service, as they can hold your post until you return.

• Avoid discussing holiday plans in public

places or on social networking sites.

• Mow your lawn before leaving so it doesn’t

look overgrown and trim any

plants/hedges.

• Ensure any outdoor tools such as ladders

are securely stored away as these could be

used to force entry into your home.

• Leave any valuable personal possessions or important documents with a relative or

in a safe.

• Cancel any deliveries (milk, newspaper etc.).

• If you have a driveway, ask your

neighbour to park on it occasionally to give

the impression your house is occupied.

• If you are leaving the country, don’t put

your home address on your luggage on

your outward journey to your holiday destination. If you are getting a taxi to the

airport, use a trusted company and avoid

talking about your holiday plans.

• Don’t leave a message on your answer

phone saying that you are away.

The police do say that a car in the drive is an indication of occupancy....but, as two out of three

cars stolen are from driveways (keys stolen from house), maybe leave the "banger" on the

drive .....if you have one.

Winchester Memory Walk 2013

Sign up for the Winchester Memory Walk, the Alzheimer’s Society’s annual fundraising event. The walk is taking place at North Walls Recreation

Ground in Winchester City Centre, with walks starting at 11am. The money raised will help support people with dementia and their carers.

Walkers can choose between a one mile walk around the beautiful park or a 6 mile city walk taking in all the historic sites including Winchester Cathedral, Wolvesey Castle, the Water Meadows and the Great Hall. After the walk relax and enjoy our live music, entertainment, homemade cakes and family games.

Throughout the day there will be a variety of entertainments including a Zumba warm up, gardening demonstrations, performances from Southampton Ukulele Jam and local musicians and much more. Greeting from Kenya

The following report and photographs are from Hurstbourne Priors resident, George Bouwens, who is currently working in Kenya. It describes the events when he took 30+ children up Mt Kenya recently.

"I have now retired from teaching (not a natural) but am going to stay in Kenya and continue with my project management work but on a freelance basis. It is now the school holidays here but we have a lot of building work going on so I don't get much time off.

For the climb, we each had a porter and all of the food and tents were also shuttled up the mountain for us so all we had to carry was spare clothing, cameras, water and chocolate. With 34 leavers, 4 more on horseback (complete with pistol if a horse had an accident), 25 parents, 4 school staff, 4 guides and 80+ porters we made quite a caravan.

We had a gentle start on day one, with a 9km all uphill walk to the first camp which took about 3 hours. The guides very specifically took us at an exceptionally slow pace as we were gaining altitude rapidly (we started at 2500m ASL) and didn’t want anyone becoming sick on the first night. I really should have read the kit list as I discovered that jeans, deck shoes and a 3 seasons sleeping bag really weren’t suitable for the cold nights.

On the second day, the climb was quite a bit longer but still a very slow walk with no serious hills. The night spent at Liki North Camp was blooming cold with the temperature hitting -8 during the night. The tents were frozen by 6pm but fortunately someone lent me a pair of long johns. That was the night that bottles of scotch appeared from many parents' (and my own) rucksacks!

Liki north had Rock Hyrax playing all around the camp which Fergs would have loved chasing! Altitude sickness started kicking in for a few by this point and one mother gave up the next morning very sadly taking her twins with her.

The third day to Shiptons really took it out of some parents and children but all made it to the camp. The horses tried for a bit but were exhausted so were walked back down. Despite now being at 4200 m above sea level, the night was much warmer.

We were woken at 2am on summit morning and force fed sweet tea and porridge. After departing at 3am, we spent the next three hours in the dark, climbing very loose

scree and often having to go on all fours before the sun came up. We got to the top just after seven and spent an hour there. Understandably, the views from 4985 m ASL were stunning and I was only sad I hadn’t taken a driver up there with me! Ignore the t-shirt, I was posing, it was very chilly!

The descent back to Shipton’s took about 2 hours and was horrible. The scree was loose under foot and I regularly lost control. If I hadn’t been wearing decent boots I’m sure I would have gone over on my ankle. We had lunch at camp, packed our bags and set off back to the first night's camp, eventually getting there about 1730. The last group got in 2 hours later with a few having to be rescued by Land Rover for the last 2 km.

We saw very little bird life up the mountain apart from a few augur buzzards, Verreaux’s eagles and malachite sunbirds. On the other hand the flora was incredible with many plants, almost prehistoric having had to adapt to mountain conditions.

A superb trip and I now want to organise something for the Cancer Vaccine Institute but with Kilimanjaro and a trip to the Masai Mara together…."
