Westward Ho! is complete! We have Lew and Wilma Giesy to thank for the extraordinary persistence to get the event run. Track management was not very helpful. It was interesting, the paddockresembledahayfieldandsomeof us raked the grass from our areas. Since our race, Mahoning Valley has cancelled their Divisional race and is hoping things will improve at the track so they can hold races later in the season. Things do not look promising.

The Glen Region held the Eastern Conference BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour at the Glen this past weekend. Their numbers were down but that may have been because of the way the Fourth of July fell. A lot goes on that weekend. Many communities and places have celebrations and festivals.

I worked tech on Saturday and Sunday. I am not sure a lot of our Club Racers appreciate the off track effort that goes into putting on races. I am amazed at some of the discussions we

have had at the board meetings and conventions relative to workers. We have wasted a lot of time talking about buying lunches for workers and after race gatherings. Buying lunches is the least we should do for workers. The comment that they get to watch the races is pure bull. The things I have seen people do at registration goes beyond what is necessary. It isn’t their fault you forgot your license or to renew your membership. They just quietly make the phone calls and internet inquiries to get a racer on the track. Try working a corner for eight hours on a hot day or working the grid or getting grid sheets and results out or pushing a hundred plus cars across the scales at tech. As the garages and paddock emptied Sunday we were still there waiting for the last groups’ winners to be released and then we had to load the scales and clean up the garage. A kind word and a thank you to the workers goes a long way. The race chair still had work to do relative to results and audits and bill paying. At Solo events participants are required to work the course in their off time. Maybe we need some sort of service requirement for racers.

Gatherings after the races are an expectation. All events have them on Saturday night. Our race chairs and treasurer work hard to produce a good party at a reasonable cost to the region. This has become a cost of doing business, just like on-line registration and accepting credit cards. It is not debatable. We can’t go back to the 60’s when things were different and most of us would not want to, except to be young and foolish again.

I know some of you will not agree with my comments. You can express your opinions in Top End. Just send an essay to Carl Dresie ([email protected] or Top End Editor, 119 Brookview Dr., Rochester, NY 14617-3903). We have been looking for articles

History of the Fun OneBy Marilyn S. (Lynn) Randall FLR Historian

The actual date of the first FingerLakes “Fun One” regional race has come under question. Is the year 2014 the 50th Anniversary, or will it be the following year, when the track will be closed for repair? I guess it depends on the point of view. Here is the beginning of the history of the race. Draw your own conclusion.

Nothing was mentioned of a race at Watkins Glen, in the 1964 section of Finger Lakes Region by John Castle, who was our region’s historian for many years.

In 1965, the SCCA National Convention was held in Philadelphia, PA. At the convention, our region was given permission to hold a non-spectator race at the Watkins Glen course. This was to be the First Finger Lakes Invitational, and was to be held October 16-17. Continuing in the Castle history, “October was the month of the longawaitedfirstracetobesanctionedby the Finger Lakes Region. This was a most successful event, put together by Barry Budlong, and RE Roger Clouser. An ambitious weekend it was with a program of 20 races and trophies for almost everyone. Even with competition from Lime Rock and Nelson Ledges that weekend, we had an entry of 94 cars. “

In my FLR history archives, I have a program from “The Second Annual Finger Lakes Invitationals.” October 15-16, 1966. John Castle was the race chairman. The number of entries increased to 117, with 28 from the Finger Lakes Region. Again, quoted from the Castle History, “There were drivers from 18 different regions, 264 workers, 7 half kegs of beer emptied, and 155 trophies awarded.”

In 1967, Roger Clouser was the race chairman of the race still called, Finger Lakes Invitationals, with 128 entries. Again, the race was in October, the weekend after the Grand Prix. This year, the registration was moved from the “tiny shack on the course” to the Redman’s Hall in the village. The

hospitality party was held at Seneca Lodge. At the October membership meeting, there was a table to collect money from members to sponsor the hospitality party.

A Regional Executive column in the November 1968 column told about the 1968 Finger Lakes Invitational .In this yearfielded184entries,withseven15minute races on Saturday, and seven 30 minute races on Sunday. Race Chairman was Barry Budlong, assisted by Gene Dinkel. The Saturday night party was again held at Seneca Lodge, complete with a band. In the program, to quote Barry, “This year, the race is being called the October Speedfest. The theme is Germanic, and in keeping with the theme, the party will feature German Beer and Bavarian melodies from the band”

Gene Dinkel was both Activities DirectorandRaceChairmanforthefifthannual Finger Lakes Invitational Race at Watkins Glen in 1969. Count them, yes; this is thefifthannualrunningofthis race. According to Gene, there were a large number of new faces at the race. (Maybe it was the German beer and band from the previous year that encouraged them to attend!) Starter Bill Moran had his toes run over by a race car, resulting in four broken toes with tread marks

on them. (there was not a starter’s stand then! Thirty seven Finger Lakes members competed. Entrants came from as far away as Cal Club, with a total of 157 entries. The youngest driver was 21, and the oldest driver was 56. The average age of the winners was 30.7. Occupations of the entries , included engineers (26) salesmen (10) and one music merchant, one pipe fitter, one dental technician, one research scientist andoneflorist.(Someoneintheregionmust have been taking a statistics course, or had a lot of time on their hands.) This year, 1969, the race was nicknamed The FunOne.TheFunOneartworkwasfirstused on the program for this race. On the covered it stated, in no uncertain terms that it was the Fifth Annual Finger Lakes Invitational. (See page 54A, if you own a copy of the John Castle History.)

This should settle the question of the Fun One. The first running took place in 1965.Thefifth running tookplace in 1969, when the name Fun One was coined. So, if you are counting the number of times the event has been consecutively run, this September’s race makes the 50th running. If you are counting anniversaries, that is a different matter. So, in my humble opinion, let’s just call it the 50th annual Fun One, and party like it was 1969!

The jump on the Waste Management stages was reviewed. It is awell-builtjumpdesignedtokeepthecarflatwhichallowsforhighspeeds. Access to the spectator area at the jump was planned to have a more direct route in. Conditions prevented the building of that road. Alan described the road building procedure used by Waste Management. It was noted that not all of the stage one and three roads are on Waste Management property.

A major problem with the Super Special stages at the Fairgrounds was the problemwith dust.As a result the stagesweremodified.Watering the day before does not work due to drying out of the course. The advantage of running one of the loops versus the other includes the tightness of the turn at the end.

A number of different options were further discussed. Every bunch of weeds or bush at an apex hides a stump.

Finger Lakes Region RallyCross, Perry’s Park, Jun 21, 2014

“And Welcome to Hell Track” RallyCross Home Opener.Victor Prinzim

So there’s this old BMX movie from the 80s, Rad and it’s about a local guy who tries to make it into the biggest BMX race in the country. Anyway, there’s a line in that movie that always comes to mind when I show up to Perry’s Park… Say it in your best sports announcer’s voice, “And welcome to Hell

Track.” Let’s just say the winter wasn’t as kind to the RallyCross track as it has been in the future. There are some left over ruts, and some big dips… nothing too bad, however, we proved atthisfirstevent, thatit’salittlerougherthanmost RallyX locations.

Not to fear though! Thanks to Rob and Colin Susz. These guys ripped apart a Forester last year, actually tore the wheel wells off the thing, bought two more in the offseason and are back at it racing for family pride. They arealsoatwomanfieldtransformationcrew.Over the next few months, Rob, Colin and I are going to work on smoothing out Perry’s Park. It’s been a few years since we’ve done anyrealmaintenanceonthefield, soit’slongover due. So I ask you my RallyX friends and Racing family, if you can help out making our fieldsmoother, drainbetterandbesofteroncarspleasedropmealine,[email protected] to pick a time when we can work on the field.Robhasbroughtussomeniceequipmentto use; well he’ll use it we’ll shovel and rake.

Back to the Home opener, a lot of our regulars showed up for the 2014 RallyX Home Opener. The bad news is not all of them made it to the end. More on that ridiculousness later. Let’s get to the good stuff, Jim Perrin was there running registration, and heckling rally chairman Tony Zanni for not showing up early enough to set up the course. Which Jake Vallee was supposed to do. But at 8 a.m. decided he’d rather sleep in, and rather than calling Zanni, he Facebook messaged him. Questionable communication Mr. Vallee.

The Chilson brother’s, Chris and Brandon, showed up from Wellsboro, PA. One driving a car and the other towing a trailer with a car on it. Shaun Hallam and Lloyd Bridges showed up hoping to fair better on a 70 degree day than a -11 degree day with their compulsively overheating Audi Quattro and smartly a pick up truck. The truck proved worthy of a note in the story because it helped set a course in record time. The car on the other hand compulsively over heated on Lloyd’s 3rd or 4th runs. A gutsy new comer, Alex Grassl showed up to slay some grassl of his own in a Mercedes 190E.

Some other familiar faces, Darren Ohara, last year’s Most Improoooved Driver Award recipient returned to try and dethrone last year’s championship winner Zanni.(Darren, You won the most improved driver award last year, it’s in the mail.) Ryan Kolupa had the longest trip to Perry’s Park from Utica, to prove once again an automatic transmission can be used in a RallyX. Erik Voekle made his triumphant return to RallyX this year in his new Ford Fiesta with rally lights and all, and sent it around the course. Other notables, Andy Walker’s Grasshopper showed up, with co-driver Jon Wolff, who proved you can’t leave a car in a fieldandexpectitnottobreak.Hecompletelytoreafrontcontrolarm in half. I was impressed. Also impressed that Walker welded it back together to get it on the trailer for the ride to the junk yard.

Some how, Zanni talked the winner of the National 2WD Class at STPR®, and Rally America Rookie of the year contender, Troy Miller to bring his Dodge Stratus up and rock a RallyX, which he did. No, really, he didn’t. The Dodge Stratus of Despair, Miller’s firsttowvehicle, andreccevehicleatSTPR,decidedtoendit’sown life on his 3rd run, when a transmission bearing or half shaft decided it just couldn’t go on… Smoke and scary noises made for a fun few minutes on the course. Of course Zanni thought he could pull it out of the way with his wCRX, that was a hoot to watch.

So that’s it in a nut shell, Chris Chilson, got 1st, Brandon Chilson 2nd, and Tony Zanni 3rd overall. The rest of the results are somewhere near this story, hopefully. We’ll be doing some greatworkoverthesummertomakethefieldsmootherandsofterfor cars. So get your snow tires back on and come to the next event. July 20 thru the 31st ish… as we have to reset that date… there is also a rumor that there will be a loaner car at the rest of the events, we’ll keep you posted.

A big thanks to everyone who competed, to Perrin for setting upregistrationandtech,BrucePerry, fortheuseofthefield.Untilnext time… drive fast and take chances.

Westward Ho! 2014 June 21 and 22Results Summary

The adjoining table gives the results by class for each car number. Finger Lakes Region members are shown in BOLD.

Results for each session are given as PIC (place in class/number running in that class).

Best time and speed for all of the sessions are given in the last two columns. Not all passing times were recorded due to damage to the loop connections that occurred when a car fireinthepitlaneatthestart/finishlinewas extinguished.

Full results are available through MyLaps, the Finger Lakes website and from the chief of Timing & Scoring ([email protected]).

They Did It !!! Hats off to Wilma and Lew Giesy for pulling off a miracle last month with the Westward Ho double Regional event! To make a long story short we were informed a few weeks before the event that the track had not weathered the Northern Ohio winter very well and there was considerable deterioration of the racing surface. Issues with the current track managers, the owner and another major user came to a head and the track was closed. It took several weeks of valuable time to get things sorted but the track reopened under new management (same owner) the week before our event and the facility was deemed usable. Countless calls, e-mails and even trips to the track were required but the Giesy's pulled it off with lots of help from our Finger Lakes members.

The track was "interesting" to say the least. When I go to Nelson Ledges

I never expect anything.... I've been going there since 1977 and it pretty much has remained the same - incredible race track design, great people, great competition with a touch of Adirondack camping. The words "roughing it" come to mind. This year things were a bit more primitive with minimal paddock preparation to put it politely. And when was the last time you went to a drivers meeting and were warned of hot race cars combined with tall grass creating potential thermal results. Everyone pitched in. Volunteers cut grass Friday during the test day and rakes were borrowed to make your paddock a bit more presentable. Some racers actually brought lawn mowers and weed whackers!

Even with the on-again / off-again statusandthelateconfirmationthattherace was on, we had a reasonable turnout of around 70 + cars. Lew provided a schedule with plenty of track time and the weather was beautiful. Racing was GREAT with lots of action. The FV group created lots of excitement when halfthefieldtookeachotheroutwith

two cars providing aerial excitement. Then our very own Mary Hartman decided to keep the corner workers and ambulance drivers busy Sunday morning when she performed a triple barrel roll as she exited the high speed Kink on the back straight during the Enduro. The car crossed to the inside of the track. Dug in - and her skyward performancebegan.Iwasoneofthefirstto get to her. For those who know Mary she was a little excited to say the least and started to medically diagnose her pains as she was still strapped in the race car. Safety and Medical crews did their jobs and Mary was whisked away to the hospital to return later Sunday afternoon moving a bit slower in her hospital grubs with 4 fractured vertebrae. The racers rallied to her needs - loaded her car and equipment then devised a plan to get her broken self and equipment home safely. As far as Mary, she's on the mend and doing well thanks to a well-built race car and the proper safety equipment.

The Glen Region had a successful Majors event over the 4th of July weekend with 243 cars entered and they go right back at it with their July Sprints the third weekend of July.

Next on the racing calendar is the Fun One September 13 and 14 at Watkins Glen. This will be our 50th anniversary making this Finger Lakes Regional the longest running event in SCCA history. The event will also be a NEDiv Divisional raising the level of competition and we will also feature races for: Historic Racing Groups vintage cars, the Formula First and vintage S2. We're trying something different this year with a special Saturday sprint race for the vintage S2 group that is promising to bring 40 + cars to the event. The Pig Roast is on Saturday night and we will be inviting the "Old Timers" who raced at the track in the earlier Fun Ones to share in the festivities.

Still looking for volunteers to help Elizabeth and me out with the event.

Specifically looking for someone to help with Trophies, the Special 50th anniversary T shirts and with advertisers. We need some help in contacting some of the Old Timers and spreading the word about the 50th Anniversary. Helpers are also needed to assist Elizabeth in the millions of things she does to keep racers and workers fed, watered and happy.

That's enough for now. Broken race cars in the garage and I need to load up for the July Sprints.
