Success at the 2014 Iowa State Orientation Resource Fair

RESOURCE FAIR AT ISU

Every summer, the Ames Chamber of Commerce is allowed to have a table at the

Iowa State University Orienta-tion Resource Fair to help wel-come incoming freshmen and their families to our community. Along with our sponsor Bank-ers Trust, we were pleased to showcase our member busi-nesses to the future residents of Ames.

With another record enroll-ment year for Iowa State University, we handed out over 1000 goodie bags with

our Ames Chamber Relocation Guide,

coupons, and promotional items from our members. We were happy to have with us many member volunteers who helped greet families each day of the Fair.

Meet the Interns!

“The overall objective of my internship at the Ames Eco-nomic Development Commis-sion is to assist in the Workforce Development sector. I have been analyzing data collected on Ames businesses and look for trends and unusual circumstanc-es. From this, I draw conclu-sions and create reports that are released to the public to view. The whole reason for doing this is so we can make Ames a better place to learn, earn, and raise a family. We want to attract busi-

ness and entrepreneurs to Ames to enhance our quality of life. We pride ourselves in being a high growth city, and we are dedicated to making sure it doesn’t stop anytime soon. I am proud to say I am a born and raised Iowan, and I plan to stay in Ames to start my career. There are hundreds of internship opportunities every year here, and many more opportunities for real life work.”

This internship has been an outstanding learn-ing experience so far, and I have really enjoyed the collabora-tion between all of the employees and the interns.”

RIBBON CUTTINGS

Celebrate with a ribbon cutting

If your business has completed a major remodeling project, moved to a new location, or changed ownership, you need to take

advantage of the Chamber’s Ribbon Cutting service that brings members and the media to you.

After the fun has been had and the ribbon has been cut, the Chamber will frame your best photo and deliver it to your place of business along with a Chamber business card holder full of member businesses that attended your celebration.

Not only does this opportunity get people to your place of business, but it offers a unique networking environ-ment in addition to some great market-ing. So what are you waiting for? Call Sarah at (515) 232-2310 to schedule your Ribbon Cutting today!

Fourth of July Fireworks This July marked the second year that Young Professionals of Ames has man-

Hopefully summer has been enjoyable and restful, but now is the time to get back to a routine. With the start of every school year, there are many things to look forward to. Here are eight steps for a smart start back to school:

1. Adjust to the new routine: A few weeks before school, establish school-day schedules for homework, bath time, and bedtime

2. Get Organized: Make sure school

school night to avoid last-minute panic. Also, be sure to update emergency contact and health information.

3. Shopping, Take advantage of Sales: Be on the lookout for clothing sales and go your children’s wardrobes and weed out everything they have outgrown. School supplies, check out http://www.ames.k12.ia.us/ for more information.

4. Nutrition, Plan healthy meals: Don’t skip breakfast, it’s the most important meal of the day! Plan out a week’s menu to help encourage healthy choices.

5. Set Priorities and Schedules: Start a family calendar and make sure to provide enough time for homework and family time.

6. Prepare for the homework ahead: Set aside a well-lit, quiet place with a good work surface to do homework. Try to dedi-cate this space to homework and keep it clutter free.

7. Arrange for Transportation: Whether walking, biking, driving, or riding the bus, go over the rules of stranger awareness and

-ments: Make sure your child knows where to go after school and establish expectation and guidelines that are age appropriate.
