The RUNDOWN - September 2014President’s CornerHello Striders:

We’ve had one of the mildest summers in my memory of living in this area. Despite my comments in August, running in heat and humidity, while still present has not been as bad as in years past. If you’re training for a long fall race, if you weren’t injured you should have been able to pile up mileage.!

That having been said, however, I’d like to add a caveat. I just finished reading the biography of Oregon coach Bill Bowerman by Kenny Moore. He was a phenomenal individual and an innovator in a number of areas. One of those was his criticism of coaches who overtrained the athletes under their tutelage. When he became coach at Oregon there was very little information about how best to train for track events. A lot of people thought the more the better. Bowerman through observation and experimentation came to believe that it was better to have intense workouts followed by periods of rest. He often had high school stars come into his program and found he needed to cut back their mileage to help them improve their performances.

We’ve all seen folks who become burnt out on a sport they’ve concentrated in exclusively for a long time. In the same way it’s possible to become burnt out both mentally and physically from too much too intensive training. For some people it may be OK, but be careful that you’re spending too much time on one aspect of your training and not considering the whole.

After a limited activity list during the summer we are jumping back in with races every weekend in September. It starts on Sunday the 7th with the Run for Hope at Mt. Trashmore. The next weekend, the 14th there is the Rush to the Goal 5K also at Mt. Trashmore. There is the Farm House 6K on the 20th, the Alanton Mile on the 21st, and the month ends with the always popular Neptune Festival 5K/8K on Atlantic Avenue.!

See you at the races!

Rich Hildreth

The RUNDOWN - September 2014Fun at the Annual PicnicThank you to Dan Neuland for another awesome picnic at his home. Water toys and an organized swim were available for those who wanted to be a little bit more active prior to drinking and eating. Dan chose Gulden Draack for the keg, which was empty long before the crowd was gone. Dan made a nice selection. Lots of burgers, salmon, hot dogs, and pot luck dishes crowded the serving tables.

During the picnic there was a silent auction for three VIP RNR Concert passes. Donna Brickhouse was the successful bidder. Additionally, Randy Cook, Laura Maloney, and Sharon Rodier went home with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Race entries. Good Luck to all.

The RUNDOWN - September 2014

Tidewater Striders at the 2014 USATF Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championshipsby Steve DurrantWake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, was the location of the 2014 USATF Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships July 17 - 20. Strider Buddy Levitin, a fellow USATF official, informed me that he had been appointed to officiate at the Championships and asked if I wanted to apply and accompany him to Winston-Salem to work the event. Two Race Walking events were scheduled during the four day meet. The first was a 5000M Race Walk on the track, and the second a 10K Race Walk on a road course on the Wake Forrest campus. It sounded interesting and I had never been to Winston-Salem. I applied to officiate and my application was accepted. We drove to Winston-Salem on Wednesday, July 16th. After arriving on campus we were given meal passes and assigned to a dormitory room - our home for the next three days.

The first event we officiated was the 5000 Meter Race Walk on Thursday, July 17th which consist of completing 12 ½ laps around the 400 meter track. Men and women competed in separate 5,000M heats. Buddy and I, along with one official from Greensboro, NC, were the three race walk judges for the two 5000M heats that morning. A total of 43 race walkers – 16 women and 27 men competed. There were 2 DQs and one DNF.

No race walking events were scheduled for the next day, Friday. We spent the morning assisting at the long jump competition as “rakers;” smoothing out the sand in the landing pits after each competitor completed their long jump attempts. It was not one of the sought after positions, but a necessary one to ensure an efficient event and well run event.

Ray Funkhouser, a familiar race walk official from Virginia, arrived late Thursday morning. The large part of the afternoon was spent planning the race officiating for the next day’s 10,000 Meter Race Walk. Five race walk judges, including Buddy and me, would judge the event. We also walked the road course on the campus that would be used for the race to insure we would be familiar with the location when we arrived there in the dark the next morning.

The 10K road course was a 500 meter length of roadway near the center of the Wake Forrest campus. Competitors would race walked a 1000 meter course circuit – 500 meters on one side of the road and returned 500 meters on the other side of the road. The race would end when the competitors had completed 10 circuits of the course. Forty-three race walkers, 16 women and 27 men, started the race. Tidewater Strider Rebecca Garson was one of the 16 women race walk competitors. She finished third overall for the women, and was first in the W50-54 age group. Our Strider runners need to consider membership in USATF and the many competition opportunities offered in national meets at distances ranging from 1500 meters to 10,000 meters.

The RUNDOWN - September 2014

At the AAU Junior Olympics held in Des Moines Iowa in late July, Virginia Beach rising 8th grader and Tidewater Striders New Energy Runner Benjamin Werve finished 9th in the 1,500 in 4:33, a PR by 3 seconds and 6th in the 3,000 in 9:55, a PR by 15 seconds for 13 year old boys. He achieved All American Status in the 3000.

Ben’s first race was when he was 4 in Jacksonville, FL. There was an event conducted by local elementary schools to promote healthy living called, “Let Us Play, Kids 2K.” It was a fun run, but showed his determination. There were a few other 5Ks and tri-athlons he attended with his family for fun, but he did not concentrate on running. Instead Ben tried different sports including soccer, swimming, diving, and gymnastics.

When his family moved (through the Navy) to Hampton Roads, his Mom registered for the Virginia Beach Rock and Roll Half Marathon. At the expo she saw a booth for Tidewater Striders and met some runners from New Energy, their youth running group. He was in 4th grade and loved running the hills at MT Trashmore twice a week. There is a Youth Grand Prix featuring 1 mile runs and at each one he was determined to place in his age group. The coaches at New Energy led by Angelo and Sherry Celesia exposed Ben to things like AAU and USATF, which gave him opportunity to perform both on the track and in cross country while still in Elementary School.

This past year he started training with Mr. Joshua Wilks, a math teacher and running coach at Great Neck Middle. He has mentored Ben’s running, as well as his overall dedication and sportsmanship.

Ben’s Mom, Eileen, noted - “We are lucky and grateful to have the support and encouragement of New Energy, the Tidewater Striders and Great Neck Middle School. In the future, he’ll be further thankful to join the strong distance team at F.W. Cox High School and learn from some outstanding city, state and nationally ranked runners.”

Ben’s Significant accomplishments in addition to his JO Performance ares:

Won Tidewater Striders Youth Grand Prix in 2011 and 2012

AAU Cross Country National Championships 2012 placed 9th and 2013 placed 5th (3,000M/for his age group) - All American Status

USATF Junior Olympics 2013 placed 9th in the 1,500M (11 & 12 year old boys)

Virginia Beach City Schools Championships - 2013 10th in mile, 2014 6th in 800 and 1st in mile with 4:57.

Ben’s coaches and family usually do not encourage him to race much longer than a 5K. He has competed in the Shamrock 8K Middle School Challenge twice placing second in his age group. He also usually takes the winter off from racing other than a couple run local road races.

He currently participates in soccer, wresting and track at Great Neck Middle School. He also participates in Rush travel soccer throughout the year. He likes skateboarding, surfing and fishing in the neighborhood ponds with friends. He doesn’t train on the track all year. He’s a normal middle school kid, but when it’s time

Tidewater Striders Running Club Congratulates New Energy Runner Ben Werveby Eileen Werve and Angelo Celesia

to train he gets the job done. Leading to the Junior Olympics he made a training plan for the summer with his coach and stuck with it running 5 days a week from an easy two mile run to grueling speed workouts on the track first thing in the morning with his coach to avoid the heat. He piggy backed on running groups to stay motivated and have company on the track, trail and road. His family also rode the bike and held the watch and his water, always encouraging him along the way. The highlight of his summer was attending the Nike Smoky Mountain Running Camp. He really enjoyed running twice a day in hills of North Carolina. While at camp, he found a new appreciation for trail running.

His older sister, Samantha, now attending Cox as a sophomore, runs cross country, indoor track and last year played JV soccer. She also plays Rush travel soccer.

His parents are proud to claim both are advanced, straight A students!

Next year’s AAU Junior Olympics will be at Norfolk State and the USATF Junior Olympics will be at the University of North Florida....Ben is excited already!

The RUNDOWN - September 2014The Athlete’s Kitchen - Fueling on a Budget: Tips for Hungry Runners Copyright: Nancy Clark MS RD CSSD July 2014 www.sportsnutritionworkshop.comMany teens and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are good runners. In elementary school, they may not have been good at sitting quietly, but they certainly could excel at sports. Many found exercise had a calming, centering effect. With maturation, exercise still helps them get through their school/workday.

Runners with ADHD often have trouble organizing an effective fueling protocol, including the basic tasks of shopping for and preparing food, as well as having the right foods available at the right times. This can create problems with low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and hunger that gets disguised as inability to concentrate, stay focused on a task, edginess, hot temper, and reduced athletic performance. Runners with ADHD often disregard these symptoms, thinking they relate to their ADHD diagnosis, not hunger and poor diet.

ADHD medicationsRunners with ADHD often take appetite-killing meds that easily disrupt normal fueling cycles and contribute to fluctuations in energy. Runners need steady energy to be able to concentrate and perform at their best. Hence, runners with ADHD need to vigilantly monitor their bodies for early signs of hunger, including feeling fatigued or moody. Some may seek an energy drink such as Red Bull or some coffee, but the solution is not caffeine. They need fuel!

When runners with ADHD miss meals due to lack of planning, they often end up craving sweets—a sign the body is too hungry and wants a sugar-fix. They can then easily succumb to overindulging in cookies, candy, and other so-called “junk foods.” This may happen at 10:00 pm, after their appetite-suppressing meds have worn off, and this can disrupt normal sleep patterns, as well as kill their appetite for their breakfast and that perpetuates a bad eating cycle.

What’s a runner with ADHD to do?The information below is helpful for any athlete – not just those with ADHD…

• Take mealtimes seriously. If you can find the time to train and compete, you can also find the time to fuel right. In fact, all competitive athletes who don’t show up for meals might as well not show up for events. Everyone loses his or her competitive edge with hit-or-miss fueling.

• Fuel your body on a regular schedule by eating meals at least every four hours. If meds curb your appetite, plan to eat by the clock, and not by (non-existent) hunger. If necessary, set the alarm on your watch or cell phone. If the sight or small of food makes you nauseous, try cold beverages such as a fruit smoothie with additional protein powder.

• Organize your eating into four “food buckets.” Consume the contents of a bucket every four hours, either as a meal (Breakfast, Early Lunch, Late Lunch, and Dinner) or as smaller mini-meals based on wholesome foods, not sweets.

For most runners, each meal/food bucket should be the caloric equivalent of two or three slices of pizza. That’s about 500 to 800 calories per bucket (or 2,000 to 3,200 calories per day), depending on your body size, sport, and energy needs. For runners on appetite-curbing ADHD meds, the breakfast bucket should be the biggest bucket and incorporates some of the lunch calories that will otherwise get left uneaten.

The following sample menu has 4 food buckets that offer a steady supply of energy for an ADHD high school runner:

7:00 Breakfast Bagel + peanut butter + tall glass milk + banana OR 3-egg omelet (lowfat cheese, veg)+ toast + fruit. Better bet if unable to stomach all of lunch: Bagel & peanut butter + omelet + milk + banana

11:00* Lunch #1 Tuna sandwich/whole wheat bread + string cheese + milk

3:00* Lunch #2 Pre-exercise: Energy bar + apple Recovery: Dried fruit & nuts + pretzels

7:00 DinnerChicken + brown rice + veggies + milk

* Remember: If you take ADHD meds, you may not feel hungry but your body still needs fuel. Figure out what you can eat, regardless!

• Eat BEFORE your appetite-killing meds kick in. Again, figure out how to front-load your calories. For example, one athlete with ADHD started eating a hearty sandwich for breakfast. Another enjoyed “planned overs” from dinner the night before. By front-loading, they felt calmer during the day, had better workouts in the afternoon, and were better able to focus on the task

at hand.

• Plan to fill your food buckets with foods in their natural state, and limit your intake of highly processed foods. Some health professionals believe additives and food coloring in processed foods can trigger hyperactivity in certain people. Plus, highly processed foods commonly offer less nutritional value and fewer health benefits. Shop for fresh foods along the outside aisles of the grocery store: fresh fruit, vegetables, lean meats, low fat dairy, and whole grain breads.

• Include a protein-rich food in each food bucket, such as eggs, cottage cheese, peanut butter, lowfat cheese, Greek yogurt, and turkey/cheese roll-ups. Again, nothing is wrong with having dinner for breakfast; enjoy that cheeseburger and oven-baked “French fries” and then roll the scrambled eggs and cheese into a wrap for lunch. Protein is satiating and helps stabilize blood sugar. A trail mix made with nuts and dried fruit is another option with compact calories for easy nibbling.

• Make a shopping list before you go to the grocery store, and shop after having eaten a meal. That enhances your chances of choosing more of the best sports foods, and less of the rest. Examples include: orange juice rather than sports drink; oranges instead of orange juice; oatmeal (served with a little honey) instead of frosted flakes (with a lot of sugar); whole-wheat bread rather than white bread; scrambled eggs instead of Eggo waffles; baked potatoes in place of French fries; plain yogurt sweetened with maple syrup instead of pre-sweetened yogurt; trail mix rather than M&Ms; protein bars rather than candy bars.

Not only for athletes with ADHDIf you find yourself edgy and unable to focus in the afternoon, experiment with reorganizing your meals and snacks into four (calorically-equal) food buckets and notice the benefits: better focus, fewer cravings for “sweets”—and better performance.

AAU Junior Olympics NationalsArticle contributors: Lou Pollard, Eileen Werve , Kim ZimmerTwo of Tidewater Stiders finest competed at the AAU Junior Olympics held in Des Moines, IA. Besty Pollard, 13 of Suffolk, ran the 1500m on July 31 in 5:32, shaving six seconds off her personal best, and resulting in 36th in the nation. On August 2, Betsy ran the 3000m, shaved 35 seconds off her seed time, and ran a personal best of 12:44, resulting in a ranking of 31st in the nation. Benjamin Werve, 13 of Virginia Beach also ran the 1,500m on July 31 in 4:33, shaving 3 seconds off his time, placing 9th and went on to run the 3,000m on August 2nd, running a 15 second personal best of 9:55 and earning a medal. The weather, the officials, the competitors and the crowds were all helped make for a wonderful experience.

One of New Energy’s more recent additions is Rachael Zimmer of Virginia Beach. Rachael has had a busy year since joining the team last September. It has been a whirlwind getting to know her teammates, participating in Strider/New Energy events. After competing in the 400, 800 and 1500m AAU Divisional and 800 and 1500m AAU Regional competitions in Suffolk, Rachael secured a spot in this year’s National competition at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. She showed strongly in her event heats, achieving a 7:02.54 in the 1500m and a PR of 3:18.16 in the 800m event. In her free time Rachael enjoys Art, Dance, Swimming, and playing with friends. We’re looking forward to hearing more from our little competitor!

Next year’s AAU Junior Olympics will be at Norfolk State University. I’m sure we’ll see a sea of blue New Energy and Tidewater Striders singlets running strong at next year’s championships when they’re in Hampton Roads.

Healthy Running - Running with Fatigueby Sam WittenbergFeeling tired when running lately? The summer’s heat and humidity certainly has that effect on many of us. Of course, many other circumstances can make you feel like you’re struggling through a run. Maybe you’re not eating enough to support your weekly mileage, or not getting enough sleep. Maybe not hydrating during runs, or just needing 1 or 2 days off. Most of the time, the bad runs are isolated instances, we make some corrections in self-care or training, and move on to running with more energy. Sometimes, though, this feeling continues for run after run with no end in sight. That’s when it’s worth considering if there is an underlying medical cause. In this article, I’ll discuss the more common causes of struggling with running and how to address these.

Before I go further, it’s important to keep in mind that, as runners, we tend to have overall better health status than the general population. There are, then, many common, less serious, but equally important reasons for feeling like runs are harder than they should be. You’re already familiar with these, and here is the partial list: Inadequate nutrition and hydration, including inadequate fluids during running, insufficient recovery meals, or inadequate calorie intake in general; insufficient sleep (bad sleep habits); overtraining, inadequate rest days and insufficient recovery; training errors along the “too much, too hard, too soon” theme. There are the environmental considerations of not enough time to adjust to seasonal changes, such as heat and humidity, or changes in altitude or terrain. Psychological and personal factors include dealing with personal stressors, work demands, family difficulties, or sometimes just the anxiety and unclear expectations of what training will feel like. This seems like a long list, but we often take running for granted and fail to recognize how these common behaviors and factors affect our runs and may make us feel “stale”.

What, then, should you do when the effort of running is out of proportion to the distance or intensity of the run, or when there is a sudden or distinct change in how running feels? When discussing this with your doctor/health care provider, describe as best as you can how you feel when running. Are you feeling out of energy, feeling tired, feeling like your legs are weak? Are you getting dizzy or lightheaded? Are you struggling to breathe comfortably and feeling like you can’t get enough “wind”? Or does running just feel “blah” and no longer enjoyable? Describe your training, your running schedule, your current race goals, how you care for yourself, and how you feel your current running experience is more difficult that past training. In every instance, what information you provide determines what the next steps will be in your evaluation and care.

So let’s review the common medical reasons for difficulty running.

Iron deficiency anemia is the most common nutritional anemia in the United States. In one research study, endurance athletes were at particular risk, with 82% of female endurance athletes affected. When there is insufficient iron available in the body, the blood count can in turn be low, and the result is feeling tired or weak, getting out of breath when running, and at times feeling lightheaded. Skin and mucous membranes may appear pale, depending on the severity of the anemia. The complete blood count (CBC) and ferritin level can be low. There is a debate in the medical literature as to whether low ferritin levels with a normal blood count is associated with the symptoms of iron deficiency anemia. Diet should be corrected to include iron-containing foods, or an iron supplement may be prescribed for as long as three to six months. This will commonly be the situation in healthy women whose intake of dietary iron is not keeping up with menstrual losses. However, in women after menopause or in any men, causes for loss of iron need to be considered and identified (most commonly from the GI tract).

Exercise induced asthma will often produce chest tightness, wheezing or difficulty breathing that occur only with physical exertion. These symptoms generally begin within 5 to 20 minutes after the start of exercise or 5 to 10 minutes after brief exercise has stopped. Exercise induced asthma is a variation of asthma and is not produced by allergy or infection. It is believed that the increased breathing with exertion results in taking in air that has not been warmed by the nasal passages, triggering inflammation and spasm in the bronchial passages. In between episodes of physical activity, the person has no asthma symptoms. Testing can include a measure of forceful breathing called spirometry performed before and after exercise. In the majority of cases, inhaled medication in the “beta agonist” category (e.g., albuterol) taken 15 to 30 minutes prior to exercise prevent the development of symptoms. Be aware that albuterol requires a waiver if competing in NCAA/USAFT sanctioned events. If wheezing occurs in between bouts of exercises, this is more than just exercise induced asthma and requires further evaluation.

Hypothyroidism is a state of underactivity of the thyroid gland. This bow-tie shaped gland in the front of the neck produces thyroid hormones T3 and T4. If the thyroid gland is failing to produce thyroid hormone, the pituitary gland in the head releases higher levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) to generate more thyroid hormone production. Thus, the typical lab findings are a low free-T4 level and elevated TSH level. Symptoms of hypothyroidism can include fatigue, low energy, weight gain, swelling of the limbs, and constipation, though these are very variable. Hypothyroidism is treated by replacing thyroid hormone with either an animal-derived extract or a synthetic form of the hormone. (The issue of whether one can be hypothyroid and have normal blood levels is beyond the purpose of this article.)

Infections in the body can result in a sudden change of one’s energy level and endurance. The obvious instances, of course, are colds and bronchitis. A full article devoted to these will appear in the late fall, but for now, let it suffice to say that you should take a break from running and give yourself the time to recover if you are having any symptoms “below the throat”, such as cough, wheezing, or sputum. Gastroenteritis, or stomach virus, gives the double blow of feeling ill from the infection and being dehydrated. Wound infections of the skin can extend beyond a localized area and produce weakness, fatigue, poor energy, or fever. The best known instance of this is infection with the staph strain MRSA. (There will also be a future article on skin conditions in runners.) Of course, in younger runners,

17

The RUNDOWN - September 2014mononucleosis is a cause of very pronounced fatigue.

In the age groups over 35, coronary artery disease must be kept in mind when a runner is struggling. True, runners by nature of their lifestyle have a lower risk of coronary disease than the general population. However, any runner who is feeling labored breathing, any uncomfortable feeling in the chest (it doesn’t have to be “pain”!), or pronounced fatigue that is new and not typical for them should seek medical evaluation. Keep in mind that an EKG will often be done but is commonly normal, and further cardiac testing is necessary. The important point here is this: if a runner is accustomed to running comfortably and newly starts to have the above symptoms, get checked out!

Cardiac conditions in younger patients often do not have symptoms that allow for early detection (and thus the tragedy of collapse during racing). However, a young runner feeling uneven or skipped heartbeat, with or without feeling tired, dizzy, weak, or short of breath, should be evaluated for an irregular heartbeat or cardiac arrhythmia (of which there are many types). Older runners with irregular heart beat should be evaluated for the condition called atrial fibrillation.

We often don’t think of depression as a medical condition, but it is. Depression is defined as “Depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities for more than two weeks” and accompanied nearly every day by depressed mood or irritability, decreased pleasure or interest, change in appetite or a greater than 5% change in body weight, change in sleep, change in activity, fatigue or loss of energy, guilt or worthlessness, difficulty in concentration, and (tragically) suicide. Depression can be treated with counseling, with medication, or both. People who are depressed may not recognize it. If you observe these symptoms in a fellow runner, assist and support them in getting the proper help.

With respect to type 2 diabetes, the most common form, if you have a family history of diabetes or have risk factors such as overweight, obesity, hypertension, and elevated blood lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides), a fasting blood sugar is an important test. A fasting blood sugar greater than 126 on two or more occasions is diagnostic of diabetes. Any 2 random blood sugars over 200 are also diagnostic of diabetes. At times, a physician may order a hemoglobin A1c (or simply A1c), and a value over 6.2% also diagnoses diabetes. Uncontrolled diabetes may produce a feeling of fatigue or low energy. Symptoms of fatigue, thirst or frequent urination may not be present if blood sugars are not persistently over 185-200, and nearly 50% of people with diabetes unfortunately don’t know they have it.

A brief word about sleep disorders. As noted above, inadequate sleep leads to inadequate recovery and poor running. However, some people are affected not by their own poor sleep habits but by a disorder of sleep. Worthy of mention is obstructive sleep apnea. Common symptoms are daytime drowsiness and difficulty staying awake, loud disruptive snoring, and the occurrence of apnea, or a stop in breathing. This is most often observed by the person’s bed-partner and the person themselves is not aware.

The woman with female athlete triad may seek evaluation for feeling tired. This important medical condition is due to an absolute deficiency in energy availability (calories) and is characterized by disordered eating, loss of menses (amenorrhea) and low bone mineral density. This is a challenging and serious problem that requires comprehensive and compassionate evaluation and care.

Finally, medications can produce fatigue, weakness, or lightheadedness as side effects. These can include medications to treat hypertension (beta blockers or if treatment is producing unintended low blood pressure), diabetes (if producing unintended hypoglycemia), depression, migraine (beta blockers), allergy and cough/cold medication (Benadryl and other antihistamines), and medication for neuropathy (gabapentin), among many others. Never stop medication on your own. Always discuss such symptoms with the doctor who prescribed the medication. Always!

This is, of course, a quick summary of a very extensive topic. My goal was to cover the most common medical reasons for feeling fatigue or struggling with running and to provide basic information so you can seek evaluation and care accordingly. Healthy running!

Race Summary & Highlights: After missing last year, Ryan Carroll returned to the mud at Little Creek to regain his Mud Run Title. Keith Gray finished second for the second year in a row. Last year’s winner Harrison Martingayle was competing at the US Lifeguard Nationals. Perhaps next year, Ryan and Harrison can compete head on in the mud.

For the women, the top three women from last year returned to battle it out again. This year, youth won. Ashley Hay crossed the line thirteen seconds ahead of Yoko England. Jamie Dockiewicz was another minute behind.

Almost 500 runners competed individually while another 400 plus members competed in teams. A new sponsor this year came from 7-11, they sponsored the race, provided slurpees, entered four teams and provided volunteers.

The ASYMCA Mud Run is a fundraiser to support programs for local junior enlisted military families. Complete results are available at TidewaterStriders.comAdditional photos are available at www.TriDuo.com

Representing Jim White Nutrition and Fitness are Jason Piasecki, Chris R, Strider Drew Midland, Strider Aric Martinez, & Rob Rose. Their team was the second overall Male team, they completed the course together in 41:54.

Strider Mile & VA-USATF 1500M Race WalkAugust 16, 2014 - Virginia Beach, VA

Mile Finishers: 100 1500m Walk Finishers: 11Race Summary & Highlights: Tallwood High School was the venue for the 2014 Strider Mile and VA-USATF 1500M Race Walk. This was my eighth and final year as the Race Director for this Tidewater Strider Running and Walking Grand Prix event. Steve Shapiro will be next year’s Race Director.

We were fortunate to have a warm clear day for the event, with 100 runners and 11 race walkers participating. This figure is well below the participant highs of 131 and 141 in 2011 and 2012. Last year, the first year the Strider Annual Picnic did not immediately follow the race, attendance fell to 98. As the race director I recommend the Annual Strider Picnic immediately follow the Strider Mile to insure both are well attended.

New York City TriathlonAugust 3, 2014 - New York City, NY 1500m Swim T1 40K Bike T2 10K Run FinalLisa Armistead 16:36 7:17 1:26:13 2:26 52:57 2:45:27

The journey for the NYC triathlon began a few months ago when I signed up for the lottery. Luckily, I made it in. The hard part started on Saturday when I had to get my bike to transition; using the subway was not the easiest thing to do, but I made it. Sunday was an early wakeup because transition closed at 5:15am. Got everything set up and left to walk the 1.5 mile to the swim start – did I mention that the swim was in the Hudson? It was a time trial start where 15 people started every 20 seconds (grouped together by age group). The swim was fast! I did it in 16:36; the lead guy did it in 11:00. Getting to T1 was a ½ mile run, but the legs got warmed up. It had started raining during the swim so I knew the bike would be interesting. There were lots of flats out there and one pretty bad crash, but I made it through with no issues. Didn’t realize how hilly it was going to be. The run was really nice. After a steep hill coming out of Riverside Park, we ran down 72nd Street into Central Park – again, I was not expecting the hills. Finished up with a time of 2:45:27; 15/107 in my age group. Loved it and would recommend people tri it.

new energy app

PLAN TO JOIN the Tidewater Striders' New Energy Youth 2014 Running Team New Energy is an informal youth group training together to improve their times in road races as well as their performance in track and field and cross-country events sanctioned by the USA Track and Field (USATF) and AAU. Motivations vary from those who simply enjoy running, to those who are goal oriented and recognize the need to train in order to perform well in races. With its group approach to running practices, New Energy provides a fun, sociable forum for running preparation and development. New Energy welcomes all youth runners, ages 6-16, regardless of ability. Practices are informal, and participants are encouraged to attend as many as possible. Runners must have a good pair of running shoes to avoid injuries. Uniforms (singlet and shorts) and Warm ups ( Hoodie and Pants) can be purchased, but are optional. Membership in the Tidewater Striders is required by the third practice in order to participate in sessions and compete on a team basis in Track and Relay teams. The cost is $12.00 per year or $18.00 for two years. The Team participates in road races held in the Tidewater area, which are part of the Youth Grand Prix 1-mile series and are sponsored by local organizations such as school PTAs. Check race flyers for specific information by visiting www.tidewaterstriders.com . A New Energy Team race schedule will be part of the program and can be found under ‘Youth Programs’ on our Web Site. Coaching is provided by volunteers who are Tidewater Striders members. Again this year, Angelo Celesia will provide leadership for training. Other running enthusiasts/parents will also assist. New Energy provides youth runners and their families an enriching environment which can be a building block to the youth runners' future. In the past, New Energy runners attended National Cross Country and Track and Field Championships around the Country. Many previous New Energy runners are currently participating with high school and college teams where they have excelled in Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field with All State and National recognition. New Energy has produced numerous All-American medalists, State Champs and one National Champion in Cross Country. New Energy Team Training - Tuesdays /Thursdays, from 5-6 p.m., at Mt. VA-USATF 2014 OPEN ONE HOUR RACE WALK CHAMPIONSHIP & TIDEWATER STRIDERS 2014 ONE HOUR POSTAL RACEWALK

Saturday, November 8, 2014 Tallwood High School, 1668 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, VA

*A Walking Grand Prix Event * *A Golden Runner Race* The track will open at 7:00 am; 1st Heat starts at 8:00 am

This is the 2014 Virginia Association USATF Open One Hour Race Walk Championship on the track. Non USATF members and other NonVA-USATF members are welcome to participate and are eligible for Tidewater Strider awards for open M & W 1st - 3rd places. In accordance with Rule 3 of the USATF Competition Rules, only VA-USATF members are eligible for VA-USATF open awards M & W 1st – 3rd places.

In past years the one hour race walk results were submitted by mail to the Shore AC of New Jersey, where the term “Postal” originated, and combined with one hour races from other world venues. Walk On! Minnesota took over as national sponsor for two years using digital reporting of results. The Shore AC has returned as the country-wide race sponsor, they have retained the “Postal” name, and have returned to the postal method of submitting race results. Competitors may submit, or have their race results submitted to the Shore AC 2014 country-wide One Hour Postal Race Walk for a separate $5 fee. This is in addition to the $10 Tidewater Striders race entry fee used to offset the cost of using the track at Tallwood High School. Participation in the Shore AC & National Postal One Hour Race Walk is encouraged. $15 is the total fee for race entry and participation in The Shore AC National Postal Competition (one $10 check payable to Tidewater Striders; and one $5 check payable to Dave Talcott for Shore AC race registration). Lap forms will be available at the race site. The race director will consolidate and submit all Shore AC National Postal race fees, completed registration entry forms, & lap sheets to the Shore AC (Attn: Dave Talcott, Owego, NY). Receipt of payment, or Tidewater Strider Golden Runner #, and the completed entry form prior to November 8, 2014 is REQUIRED. THERE WILL BE NO RACE-DAY REGISTRATIONS.

It is anticipated that two, one hour heats, will be conducted. Individuals walking in the first heat must remain available to count and record lap times for, the second heat walkers. It is recommended that prior to arriving, walkers arrange with another walker to record lap times during one heat and compete in the following heat, or visa-versa.

THE USATF COMPETITIVE RULES OF RACEWALKING WILL BE FOLLOWED. A minimum of three (3) USATF certified racewalk judges will be assigned to judge the racewalkers in each heat. One caution (yellow paddle) may be given by a judge to walkers observed to be in danger of ceasing to comply with the rules of racewalking during their heat. Failure to (1) maintain contact with the ground at all times, and/or (2) failure to insure that the advancing leg is straightened immediately upon contact with the ground, and maintained straightened until the body passes over the leg, will result in warnings (red cards) being issued by the judges. Walkers receiving three warnings (1 red card per judge) will be disqualified and their names will not be submitted to the national sponsor: Shore AC of NJ. An air horn will be used to start each heat. A large digital race clock, located in the vicinity of the starting line and visible to all competitors, will display the time. Each walker’s lap recorder will use the digital clock, or their own digital clock/watch, to record the cumulative time of each of the walker’s laps. When five minutes remain to be walked, each walker will receive a marker (Bean Bag) to carry during the remaining time. A hand bell will be used to indicate when there is one minute remaining. The air horn will sound when the hour time has elapsed. Walkers will drop their markers at their location on the track when hearing the final air horn blast. Officials will then measure – using a measuring wheel - and insure the distance of each walker’s final lap is properly recorded on each walker’s lap sheet. *----------------------------------tear here------------------&----------------mail with check------------------------------------------- Make $10 Checks Payable to the Tidewater Striders and mail to: 211 – 66th Street, Virginia Beach, VA 23451-2040 Race Director: Steve Durrant – [email protected], Phone 757-422-6811 or 757-615-2452 VA-USATF Member: Yes__No__ Name(First,MI,Last)____________________________________________USATF Mbr#__________________M__F__ Address(#&Street,City,Zip)__________________________________________________________________________ Phone #__________Email Address________________________GoldenRunner#__________Age on 11/9/14________ I understand that racewalking is a potentially dangerous activity.
