For those that have not already registered, the Porsche
Club of America is set to begin a new tradition in 2014
with the inaugural Werks Reunion. The new, premier
Porsche event will take place on Friday, August 15, during
the world-famous "Car Week" on California's Monterey
Peninsula.
In years past, PCA co-hosted Legends of the Autobahn at
the Rancho Canada Golf Club. Now it's a celebration of
just our favorite German marque. All will be treated to a
stunning display of hundreds of Porsches, access vendors,
and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow car enthusiasts. The
2014 show will feature the latest Porsches, special vehicle
presentations, celebrity guests, and a surprise or two.
Porsche owners looking to compete will have the
opportunity to enter their car in the concours. The
concours will be designed to celebrate all aspects of
Porsche enthusiasm. From original to modified outlaws,
our goal is a welcoming concours that will dazzle competi-
tors & spectators alike. Judging classes & rules will be
available at a later date. Special, one-of-a-kind trophies
are being made just for this event. Porsche owners who
do not enter the concours will have the opportunity to
show off their pride and joy in the model specific Porsche
only parking area. PCA membership is not required to
attend, and admission is free.
The event every Porsche guy in Monterey should be at !!

A Few Things in the Werks for the Golden Empire Region
A couple of new Driving/Social Events are currently being organized. The first one is an idea that developed back
in December. It will be a multi-day drive throughout Central California. In the spirit of the Italian Mille Miglia and
California Mille, a Golden Empire Region Meta Mille Miglia is being formed. The dates are Friday Oct 31 through
Sunday Nov 2.
It’s a 500 mile tour that will take place over a three day period. From Friday
though Sunday attendees will drive from Bakersfield, through the curves of
Hwy 33 to Ojai. Up the lower Central Coast through the Santa Barbara wine
vineyards of Los Olivos. The sleepy community of Los Olivos is a good place
for dinner and some great wine sampling. And then enjoy a relaxing over-
night stay in Solvang.
Saturday mourning will bring a drive up Central Coast through
Morro Bay to Cambria. Shopping and eating will take place in Cambria that afternoon.
Then on up to Ragged Point Inn on Hwy 1 for dinner and lodging at 600 feet above the rug-
ged coastline of the Pacific Ocean. But we are not done with Saturday yet. An evening tour
through Hearst Castle is being organized for that night.
Sunday morning takes use up the majestic coast of beautiful Hwy 1 into Carmel for
lunch. Then off to Hollister to stage a spirited fun run down through Hwy 25 and back
home.
This is only a broad overview and some of information listed here maybe slightly inaccurate.
We would be interested in suggestions anyone may have to help fine tune our Meta Mille.
This will be a pay-as-you-go tour. So members will be required to make their own lodging
plans. This will allow for varying pricing options for lodging.
The other Driving Tour we are working to organize is a wine tasting trip to Paso Robles. Sandy Anderson did
a great job getting the ball rolling on this. However, things failed to come together for this one. We are in
contact with a follow PCA member who now lives in Paso Robles that specializes in organizing wine tours. He
states he can put a Paso Roble wine tour together that produces maximum enjoyment at a modest cost. He
indicated that there are some very nice hotels at some reasonable prices during a weekday, in the month of
November.
He has stated that if we are flexible enough to plan a trip that includes a Thursday night only stay
that will help to keep the cost down and avoid the large weekend crowds. He also stated that he can
arrange the a scenic drive before the trip, wine tasting at as many as ten vineyards. He will also plan
two lunches and one dinner all at different wineries. He even stated something about an olive or
olive tasting tour.
What he needs to help us crate this tour is a date and a num-
ber of participants. He stated that he can produce a very
nice two day trip in the range of $400 per couple, including food at wineries and nice comfortable lodging
if done during time period stated above. He stated that the La Quinta Inn in Paso Robles offers very nice
rooms and a reasonable price.
I think that his cost are reasonable and his knowledge of the Paso Robles are vineyards will produce an
excellent trip with minimum planning and organizing on the clubs parts. Perhaps once we do a trip through him it will much easier for our GEM
group to organize a well planned trip ourselves. So be prepared to discuss these issues in the near future.

Happy Summer Everyone!
I hope you are all keeping either water- or air-cooled this hot summer. We are
still in the middle of a heat wave, but that hasn’t kept our club indoors the en-
tire time. Some folks have been going on nice Porsche drives including a cross-
region/cross-zone overnight drive to Mammoth Lakes and a whale watching
trip to Oxnard, while others joined us at our monthly social and weekly break-
fast meetings.
I would like to invite you all to take a look at our calendar for more fantastic events this summer season! In August, we
are invited to join Cal-Inland Region for a “Movie Night in Bear Valley” with our own drive to The Getty the following
day. Don’t forget Werks Reunion will be on the 15th in Carmel Valley! For those of you with the shopping bug, we
plan a visit to the Tejon Outlets late in the month.
September brings us an exhilarating drive to Glennville and this year’s Timeline while October has our premier events
Concours and Autocross (please visit our calendar on http://gem.pca.org for regular updates).
We will soon be canvassing for Concours and Autocross volunteers. Last event our volunteers had a blast! Be sure to
volunteer early and often!
Stay safe and cool this summer!

A few weekends ago several of our GEM members drove to Mammoth Lakes for the Mammoth High-Alpine driving tour. It was
hosted by Mark Coronado from the Cayman Register, which is a Special Interest Group of the PCA. President Dave Ogden from
the Sequoia Region of the PCA was also on hand to assist with weekend details. Greg Fullmer, Rick Higdon, my son Nick and I
were present to represent our region. A total of about 50 cars from 5 different PCA Regions were present. Including few cars that
didn't truly display the Porsche badge but wanted to run with the pack anyway.
And it’s to see why others would want to join in the tour. A more beautiful area to hold a sports car event would be hard to find.
The roads and scenery around Mammoth Lake and Yosemite are akin to Highway 1, without the ocean. And surprising to me, the
roads very smooth and well maintained. They provided an excellent surface for some rather ‘spirited’ driving.
Thank you Mark and Dave for your hospitality. A great time seemed to be had by all, except for maybe a couple in an orange
Boxster who experience a Close Encounter of the Worst Kind with the friendly neighborhood CHP ……...

Most of the highways in the
Mammoth Lakes area are 7000
to 8000 feet in elevation. And
Tioga Pass was over 9000 ft.
I was aware that the thinner air
of the high altitudes would re-
duce performance on vehicles
with carburetors. However; I
was surprised to noticed the
impact that the higher elevation
had on my 2008 Cayman S. My
2008 Cayman S does not benefit
from the DFI, or Direct Fuel In-
jection that was incorporated
into the 2009 Cayman S.
But I did find that by running in
Sports Mode my 2008 S did
seem to regain much of it’s lost
power.
Below is a brief article I found
that explains the working of DFI .
The Cayman S engine used since 2009 doesn't gain any displacement over the engine used from 2006 - 08. However; thanks to the fewer
moving parts and the introduction of Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), this engine produces a hefty 25 more brake horsepower than the previous.
DFI injects high pressure fuel directly into the combustion chamber, instead of injecting it into the intake tract. This provides several
advantages including more precise fuel delivery and the ability to make use of higher compression without pre-ignition. More compression
means more efficiency and more horsepower. But don't feel guilty when you're punishing the pavement with the added horsepower
because DFI also produces significantly less carbon dioxide and other pollutants. And that’s why I bought my Cayman S, to save the Planet :)

Steve Anderson Illustrations, Factory Authorized Porsche Prints
Enriching the ownership experience for auto enthusiasts and collectors
Looking to spruce up the Man Cave with some Porsche pix? I just came across these beautifully done Porsche posters. I recently
ordered the poster below for my son’s room. Also, Steve will take a few of photos of anyone’s car and create a very personal print
of their car collection. The personal illustrations start at $349. See the example below:
"Porsche History 1948-2012""Porsche History 1948-2012" is a new poster / print release for the
2011 holiday season. The print measures a generous w36" x h24" and features 40 original illustra-
tions depicting Porsche sports cars from the diminutive 1948 356 Gmund Coupe to the recently
introduced 991 Series 911. Readers of Excellence Magazine will be familiar with the work of Staff
Illustrator, Steve Anderson, and for the first time, the archive of original artwork has been careful-
ly edited and remastered for this very special commemorative print. The finished product is availa-
ble in two finishes, a heavy weight poster and a limited edition fine art print (series of 250 prints).
The Poster is printed on 100lb. Aqueous Coated Gloss Stock.
$35 plus $5.95 shipping & tax (U.S. - 48 State).

It doesn't get better for any car guy, or girl than Monterey,
California in the middle of August. And that time is about
to arrive again. The Monterey Car Week offers and amaz-
ing set of car events. Attend car shows featuring the fin-
est and most valuable collector cars in the world. Or go
to the track events where one can see, hear, and smell
many of the most famous vintage and classic racing cars,
that were driven by the most successful racing drivers, on
the most prestigious race tracks the world has ever had to
offer. And of course you can’t help but be thrilled by the
excitement that comes from a single vehicle selling for
tens of millions of dollars at the Monterey auctions. And
all of this fun and excitement is less than four hours away
from us here in Golden Empire Region.
Monterey Car Week originated from a racing events in the
early fifties on the Pebble Beach Road Race circuit. The
"Del Monte Trophy" was held on the twisty, leafy, and
very narrow town roads in Pebble Beach, California from
1950 through 1956. The races were managed under the
auspices of the SCCA, or Sports Car Club of America. The
route was originally 1.8 miles (2.9 km) long, but was
lengthened from 1951 onwards to 2.1 miles (3.4 km).
The search for an appropriate route for the race began at
the famous 17 Mile Drive but that later proved unsuitable.
After evaluating several alternatives, a collection of roads
near the Lodge at Pebble Beach was chosen, partly for its
location and partly because it was short enough and tight
enough that it wouldn't overtax some of the small cars of
the day.
Not all of the "track" was paved; the original 1950 route
consisted of both paved two-lane roads and sections of
dirt or loose gravel. Races started along Portola Road
near the present-day equestrian center. Although the
course was always tight and twisty with tall Cypress trees
hemming in the track on either side, accidents were
scarce and relatively une-
ventful. The exception
came in 1956 when a driv-
er named Ernie McAfee
fatally slammed his Ferrari
into a tree. This spelled
the end of the popular
Pebble Beach Road Races,
although it was the genesis
of Laguna Seca Raceway,
its modern-day successor.
23
Best of Show at the Concours goes to a 1950 Edwards R-26
Special Sport Roadster owned by its creator, Sterling Edwards.
Two to three dozen cars are exhibited at the first Pebble Beach
Concours, in three classes: prewar cars, postwar cars and MGs.
The Races and Concours are such a success that they are re-
peated immediately the following spring.
In 1952 the Concours moves from the Beach Club to the lawn
of what is then called Del Monte Lodge, which we now know
as The Lodge at Pebble Beach. Car classes increase and cars on
display are distinguished based on cost and type.
In 1961, for the first time, the Concours requests a one-dollar
donation from those in attendance. These donations go direct-
ly to benefit the Monterey Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary. But
this year attendees will pay $275 per ticket to attend the finest
Concours d’ Elegance in the world.
However; if free is more your style and you want to see some
of the cars that will line the Pebble Beach 18th green without
paying the heavy price there is a way. It’s an event on the city
streets of Carmel called Concours on the Avenue on Tuesday.
Also the cars on the Tour d’ Elegance, which caravan down
Hwy 1 on Thursday will line the Carmel City streets for a lunch
stop. These will all be cars from the Pebble Beach Concours.
In 1950 the first Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance is held
in conjunction with the first Pebble Beach Road Race.
Racing great Phil Hill, who will go on to be a World Drivers
Champion, wins the Road Race driving a Jaguar XK120.

A FREE CARMEL COUCOURS EVENT During the Monterey Car Week. TUESDAY, August 12th, from 10am to 5pm
This year includes a large group of Vintage Porsches on the Avenue
25
I have found this event to rival the Pebble Beach Concours. At a very modest cost you can walk freely throughout the paddock area to view and photograph the cars. PCA also hosts a Porsche Corral with lunch and other hospitality ser-vices for a modest additional fee. The corral parking is track-side and much less dusty than the general parking areas.
This event features a huge vendor fair with something to appeal to every interest. It also has lots of good food and plenty of beer.
The sports cars that race at this event are invited to partici-pate. Cars are usually grouped for races by the year the car was built. From cars of pre 1920s to Can Am of the 1970s. And every car, from the very old to the most recent share one thing in common. They all have racing prominence. You don’t just view the cars here. You get to hear the cars, and smell the racing fuel as the cars drive past you onto the track.
Featured Marque this year is 100 years of Maserati

The Porsche Club of America is set to begin a new tradition in 2014 with the inaugural Werks Reunion. The new, premier Por-sche event will take place on Friday, August 15, during the world famous “Car Week” on California’s Monterey Peninsula.
In years past, PCA co-hosted Legends of the Autobahn at the Rancho Cañada Golf Club. For 2014, the PCA will host a dedicat-
ed event to celebrate Porsche automobiles on the very same fairways. Expect a breathtaking array of Porsches, from rare classics to customs, race cars, current models, and everything in between. Werks Reunion is open to all attendees and tagged as “A Porsche Gathering” for a rea-son: PCA is inviting all Porsche clubs, own-ers and enthusiasts to join in the fun! It is intended to be a new way for all Porsche owners to mingle during Monterey’s annu-al auto extravaganza. As a result, the Por-sche Owners Club, Porsche Racing Club, 356 Registry, 356 Club, Early 911S Registry, R Gruppe, 914 World, and all other Porsche clubs and registries are all welcome. Mem-bership in PCA is not required.
Porsche owners looking to compete will have the opportunity to enter their car in the concours. The concours will be designed to celebrate all aspects of Porsche enthusiasm. From original to modi-fied outlaws, our goal is a welcoming concours that will dazzle competitors & spectators alike. Judging classes & rules will be available at a later date. Special, one-of-a-kind trophies are being made just for this event. Porsche owners who do not enter the concours will have the opportunity to show off their pride and joy in the model spe-cific Porsche only parking area.
All will be treated to a stunning display of more than 500 Porsches, access vendors, and enjoy the ca-maraderie of fellow car enthusi-asts. The 2014 show will feature the latest Porsches, special vehicle presentations, celebrity guests, and a surprise or two. 7:00am – Registration opens 7:00-9:00am – Cars placed on field and in parking corral 7:00-10:00am – Breakfast 9:30-12:00 – Judging 10:00-4:00 – Bier Garten (Each en-trant will receive one complimen-tary beer ticket. Cash bar is also available to be stocked with St. Pauli, Spaten, Becks and spirits)

And of course no Car Week would be complete without the auto auctions
Last year during the Monterey Car Week over $300,000,000
was realized from the auto sales through five of the largest
auto auction houses. Gooding & Co, RM Auctions, Bonhams,
Mecum, and Russo and Steel are five of the auto auction com-
panies that now schedule annual auctions here in August.
In an effort to try to maintain some resemblance to a Porsche
related article, I have listed several Porsches that will be
offered this year by Gooding and RM auctions this year. One of
the Star Cars this year comes from Gooding. It is the 1969 Porsche 917K shown below. This is the same 917 Porsche
driven by Steve McQueen in the 1971 Le Mans movie. We should see some huge numbers here.
UPDATE: The 917K Steve McQueen Car has been
pulled from the Auction. Estimates of $20 Million
dollars for this car were being suggested.
29
In the September issue of The Grapevine the sale prices will be listed for
the Porsches sold from several of the auto auctions held in Monterey
throughout this week. As you can see these are not just the typical vintage
Porsches. But some rather rare and very collectable Porsches. However, I
would expect the increase in value of these more unique cars to reflect an
increase in value of our vintage Porsche as well.

Will Porsche Cars GB find 40 people to buy the UK-only 991 Turbo S

Besides, I do kind of like the Dash Plaque.

Porsche’s brilliant Macan Marketing Move
Walk into a Por-
sche dealer today,
place an order for
a Macan and you'll
be looking at a
waiting period of
six months or
more before you
can expect deliv-
ery. That may be
common enough for high-end European automakers, but the Por-
sche Macan is meant to lure new buyers to the brand, and the wait-
list could be enough to deter them from sticking around, Detlev von
Platen, CEO of Porsche Cars North America, said at a media event
here.
The solution? Offer to lease them a Boxster or
Cayman until their new Macan arrives. Shorter in
term that the usual new-car lease, these six-
month terms are designed to keep buyers from
turning their backs, all while potential customers
can experience the best of Porsche has to offer.
"I hate to have customers who don't know Porsche to visit for the
first time a Porsche dealership, prepare to enter the family and then
get an answer from the dealer, 'Oh, yes, we'd love to have you, but
you have to wait six or seven months to get your order,'" von Platen
said.
About 80 percent of Macans are expected to be sold to first-time
Porsche buyers, he said. The short-term lease program, however, is
open to anyone who puts in a firm order for the Macan.
Porsche is seeing positive response to the program, which just
launched, von Platen said. But he said it's too early to provide num-
bers for how many Macan buyers are taking Porsche up on the short
-term leases, which are offered at a monthly cost comparable to
what they'd pay for a Macan.
The Macan starts at
$50,895, the Boxster
at $52,395, and the
base 2014 Cayman
enters at $53,595.
Porsche sold 1,263
Macans in the United
States last month.
Supply constraints will
limit the Macan's full-year U.S. sales to less than 10,000 in 2014, von
Platen said. Depending on how demand holds up, U.S. sales could
reach 18,000 annually as soon as next year, he said.
Porsche's Leipzig, Germany, plant is currently set up to build 50,000
Macans a year, but Porsche could boost that number if demand con-
tinues to be strong.
While the short-term leases are intended to improve satisfaction for
waiting customers, the program also could temporarily help sales for
the Boxster and Cayman, two of Porsche's lower-volume products,
and provide dealerships with low-mileage used cars.
That's the message that Porsche is apparently sending to its dealers,
some of which were planning to display tigers or their cubs to pro-
mote the new, small Macan, after hearing from animal-rights advo-
cates. Porsche says Macan is a name derived from the Indonesian
word for tiger.
The quick action came after an exotic cats sanctuary in Tampa said it
heard from another rescue organization in North Carolina that a
nearby Porsche dealership was making inquiries about renting tiger
cubs for a promotion around the new crossover SUV. Sounded like
other dealers might have the same idea, too.
Such promotions are frowned upon in the animal-rights community
because cuddly cubs soon grow into full-size cats that breeders or
private owners can't afford to keep — making them someone else's
burden, says Susan Bass, public relations director for the Big Cat Res-
cue non-profit, when reached for comment Wednesday. She says she
reached out to Porsche and got a call back from a marketing execu-
tive "who could not have been nicer." She says he told her dealers
are independent, but "we strongly suggested that they do not have
live tigers at any of their dealerships."
Come see the new Porsche, not the tigers cubs!

Like it or not, the 996 generation of Porsche 911 is one
of the most seminal models in this car's development.
While the purists huffed at the switch from air cooling to
water cooling for the flat-six engine, this change guaran-
teed the 911 a future in a world where emissions and
noise regulations simply made an air-cooled engine an
anachronism.
What Porsche came up with in when it unveiled the new
996 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1997 was
a car with the same silhouette but it was 190mm longer.
There was also a lot in common with the Boxster from
the A-pillar forwards.
However, the engine remained out at the back, but the
water cooledwater cooling allowed 3.4-litre unit pro-
duced 300hp. Four valves per cylinder were standard
and a first for a mainstream 911 model, while power was
delivered via a six-speed manual or five-speed Tiptronic
auto gearbox. The Carrera 4 with all-wheel drive pitched
up towards the end of 1998 and was offered in both
Coupe and Cabriolet forms.
In its original state, the 996 was good for 0-62mph in 5.2
seconds and 174mph, enough to keep it in the hunt
against more expensive and exotic rivals. Then Porsche
increased the engine size to 3.6-litres in 2001, upping
power to 320hp and top speed to 178mph while lower-
ing the 0-62mph dash to 5.0 seconds.
At the same time as the new engine, Porsche changed
the original 'fried egg' headlights to units with the Tur-
bo's headlight design to differentiate the car from the
Boxster. There were also new bumpers and the Cabriolet
gained a glass rear screen. A Targa version also arrived
with a retracting glass panel.
Late in the 996's life, Porsche added the Carrera 4S in
Coupe and Cabriolet bodies. It offered the wide body
style of the Turbo, along with that model's brakes and
suspension set-up but the standard 3.6-litre motor.
Many regard this as the ultimate standard 996 and it's
spotted by the full width rear reflector.
By 2004, enough stories of engine problems were
emerging for the 996 to earn a reputation as a 911 de-
signed by accountants and it was replaced by the 997.
Partly due to this reputation and partly because there
are simply far more 996s out there than its predecessor,
the much sought after 993, this first water-cooled 911
represents superb value for money and cars start from
as little as $15,000. Picking a good one requires a little
more effort, but you'll be hard-pressed to spend more
than $38,000 on even a low miles C4S. The Turbo and
limited production 996 models fetch more money, but
for this guide we'll stick with the standard models.
996 first seen at the 1997 Frankfurt show Targa eventually joined Coupe and Cabriolet
PORSCHE’S 996, The First Liquid Cooled 911 Even with concerns over the IMS, the 996 can be a Sports Car bargain if chosen carefully
37
The 996 may have been the first water-
cooled 911 but it certainly wasn't new terri-
tory for Porsche by then. The Boxster was
already using a version of the new 911's en-
gine, albeit with smaller capacities and mid-
mounted. Porsche launched the 996 with a
3,387cc engine with four valves per cylinder
that produced 300hp at 6,800rpm. This was
increased to 3,596cc from 2001. The 3.4-litre
engine offers 258lb ft of torque at 4,600rpm,
while the 3.6-liter unit is a tad more flexible
with 273lb ft at 4,250rpm. A six-speed manu-
al gearbox was standard fit for the 996 in all
body styles or buyers could opt for the five-
speed Tiptronic auto with manual override.
The gearboxes in the 996 are regarded as
tough, but clutches can wear more quickly
than you might expect on manuals, so check
for any slipping or judders from a standing
start. Early 996 manual gearboxes experi-
enced a few woes with broken gear linkage
cables, but this should have been sorted
either under warranty or by a careful owner.
Porsche modified the cables in 2001 to recti-
fy this fault and the improved system can be
fitted to earlier cars. The Tiptronic auto is
also reliable, but make sure the car cycles
through all five ratios smoothly and the man-
ual function works cleanly and quickly with
the kickdown.
Now we come to the two big areas of debate
and concern with the 996: the rear main seal
and intermediate shaft. The rear main seal
(RMS) sits at the front of the engine on the
crankshaft. When it begins to fail, oil seeps
past and drips down into the gearbox bell-
housing and on to the ground. In most cas-
es, this is more of an irritation than a major
problem so long as the oil leak doesn't get
worse and you keep the engine topped up
with quality oil. It will need replaced eventu-
ally, but it's an engine out job, so canny own-
ers wait till the clutch needs replacing and
have the RMS changed at the same time.
A word of caution as the RMS needs to be
properly positioned and seated with a special
tool to make sure it doesn't start leaking
again. An uprated RMS from Porsche is avail-
able to address the problem of the original
failing and there are also upgraded RMS in
ceramic from specialists.
While a leaking RMS is rarely fatal to the en-
gine's health, the intermediate shaft (IMS) is
a much greater worry. The IMS is driven off
the crankshaft and operates the double over-
head camshafts on each bank of cylinders. A
sprocket on the end of the IMS drives the
cams and is held in place by a small stud. This
stud can break off and allows the IMS to
wear the bearing that holds it in place.
The first signs an owner will notice of this
problem is a rattle when starting the engine
from cold. This will develop into a much
worse rattle before the cam chain jumps off
and destroys the engine. Porsche changed
this design to use a larger bearing and
toothed chain, but it's not possible to swap
this into earlier engines. A rebuilt engine
from a well regarded specialist such as Har-
tech or Autofarm will underpin the value of
any 996.
The IMS can also cause an oil leak at the
front of the engine, which is buried under
the rear window and can be easily mistaken
for an RMS leak. When the IMS bearing
leaks, it needs to be replaced and the secur-
ing bolts properly sealed in place to prevent
future leaks. If you spot oil in the coolant
when inspecting a 996, it's likely one or both
of the cylinder heads have cracked, allowing
oil into the water jacket.
The other crack to be worried about is with
the cylinder liners. They are made of Lokasil
and the aluminium block was cast around
them to create a single unit. In most cases,
it's the centre cylinder of the three on each
bank that fails. It starts with a small crack
appearing and this can lead to a chunk of
cylinder liner detaching, which renders the
engine scrap. The only sign this is happening
is an increased thirst for coolant, so watch
fluid levels carefully.
A replacement engine will be anything be-
tween $5,900 for a motor from a scrapped
car up to $20,000 for a completely rebuilt
unit from a specialist, and you will have
labor charges on top. Checking the oil level is
done with the dashboard digital display, so
many owners overlook it. Also inspect the
radiators at the front fully as, like the Boxster
and Cayman, they corrode and can be dam-
aged by stones.
RMS/IMS only affects about five per cent,
honest!
A smoky exhaust with a 996 is most likely to
be the oil breather system failing. It can lead
to a cylinder filling with oil and the engine
refusing to start, but a modified breather is
available from specialists that cures this ill.
Other oil leaks can occur from the cylinder
head gaskets and pipes in the engine bay,
but they are no more or less common than
with other performance cars of this age and
era.
Poor idling is not uncommon and down to
the VarioCam variable valve timing mecha-
nism. Corrosion on the solenoid prevents the
system working as it should, but is a relative-
ly simple job to replace with a redesigned
part from Porsche.
Despite these potentially catastrophic prob-
lems, experts reckon they affect only around
five per cent of 996 production and earlier
cars were more susceptible.
Early cars most afflicted by engine woes
