Hello lovely readers,This month’s issue has certainly been a journey! With my due date fast approaching (10th August), I was simply hoping that I would make it to see this issue go to print! Fortunately, little Miss decided to stay put to allow this fantastic issue to get to production. I will be sure to share images of my new little Princess on our social media and in the next issue (so stay tuned!).As my own pregnancy journey draws to a close, this issue looks at early stages of labour, what I am packing in my own hospital bag (being my 3rd time in 3 years!). This issue also provides some inspirational ideas for creating your little one’s nursery or bedroom. We have featured some gorgeous products that I know you will just love.

As pregnancy draws to a close, the cervix will begin to soften in preparation for your forthcoming labour and birth. You may also

notice various physical signs that labour is starting. It’s important to remember that not every woman experiences the same signs, and that certain signs occur before or during labour varying from woman to woman.

Towards the end of your pregnancy, you may begin to feel the sensation that there is pressure building and/or cramps in your pelvic/rectal area. The cramping will feel similar to those you experience when having your monthly menstrual. The position of the baby may also cause lower back pain too.

It is not uncommon to notice and increase in acid refux (heartburn). At this stage, there is no need to go to the hospital. If you have appointments with your midwife it may be wise to mention your symptoms to them.

Ensure that you get plenty of rest ahead of your body going through labour. Some women experience quick labours whilst others have longer labours, so get plenty of relaxation in the run up to your due date.

The period before labour begins can last a matter

of hours or even days, particularly if this is your first labour. Look after yourself; eat well and enjoy warm baths.

The most common symptom of approaching labour is an increase in the strength and frequency of Braxton Hicks contractions. These are practice contractions which may occur a few times an hour helping to soften the cervix. Aside from the discomfort, one of the main ways to distinguish BH contractions from the real thing is that BH contractions are irregular and fade away. Labour pains occur at regular intervals and gradually become stronger.

Close to your due date, your midwife will check for engagement of your baby’s head. This is the dropping down of their head into your pelvis and may not occur until the start of labour but can equally happen a few weeks prior to labour starting. You may notice that you have left discomfort in your ribs but an increasing pressure in your pelvic or vaginal area causing you to ‘waddle as you walk’ and perhaps pass urine more frequently.

Ensure that you have packed your hospital bag and you may be ‘nesting’ preparing your home for your new addition. If you have any concerns, make sure you consult with your midwife and try not to worry.

Beatrice Violet was born on Christmas Day 2013, four days after her due date.

Exactly one week before my due date, my community midwife had given me an internal examination at home as I was having irregular mild Braxton Hicks. To my surprise I was already 3cm dilated! My midwife gave me a stretch and sweep, encouraged me to keep moving and was confident I would go into labour over the weekend.

I stayed active going on long walks, practicing my pregnancy yoga and bouncing on my yoga ball. However the weekend went by with no labour pains. My midwife again gave me a stretch and sweep. By now I was 4cm with bulging waters, but no contractions. I was booked for induction on New Years Eve.

On Christmas Day I woke up just after 8am to find my waters had broken in the night. I rang the hospital who said to come in, but that as I wasn’t having contractions I would most likely be sent home.

We arrived at hospital just after 9am. As I had blood in my waters it was decided I should go on a monitor. Thankfully this came back perfectly normal. By now I was experiencing mild tightening roughly every 10-12 minutes, and was told I could go home and come back when these were more regular. However at this point the midwife had to attend to an emergency. When she came back it was just after 10am and my contractions were coming thick and fast roughly every 3-4 minutes. I had an internal examination and was 5cm dilated. Active labour had finally begun!

I went into the birth pool which was lovely and relaxing. I chatted with my husband and used the gas and air while my midwife read my birth plan. By 11.45am I was very uncomfortable! I started to seriously doubt my ability to have the natural birth I wanted and began to panic. My wonderful husband and midwife calmed me down, and helped me onto the bed so that I could be checked. I was 10cm dilated and ready to push.

The midwife was excellent, encouraging me to keep using the gas and air and letting me know what was happening. My husband Jamie was invaluable, offering me sips of water, rubbing my back, and telling me I was amazing.

After just over an hour of pushing and an episiotomy, Beatrice Violet arrived at 12.49pm, weighing 8lb 3oz. As requested the midwives delayed cord clamping and Beatrice came up for skin to skin. Once the cord had stopped pulsating Jamie cut the cord.

I am so grateful to the midwives and to Jamie for helping me deliver my daughter naturally and safely. I ended up staying in overnight as Beatrice wouldn’t latch on. The staff were brilliant, staying up with me to help with positioning and latch, and showing me how to express when Beatrice remained fussy. It is partly thanks to their help that we have been successful in breastfeeding.

Beatrice is now 8 months old and doing great. We can’t imagine life without her!

As this issue of Mummy and Me was going to print, our Magazine Founder Michelle was also preparing to give birth to her third child. Being the 3rd time she has had to pack a hospital bag, we thought we would take a look and ask Michelle, “What’s in the bag?”...

What’s In The Bag?...

“For the bag itself, I always choose the changing bag that I intend to use when the baby comes along. Unless

you have a preferred bag already, using the changing bag is practical

and also gives you plenty of pockets for all the relevant baby items.

I have chosen the spacious ‘Samui Coal Pacapod Changing

“Having been in the womb for so

long, babies have sensitive skin so there is no need

to pack lots of products. When changing baby, it is advisable in the early days to use cotton wool

and warm water”

“A baby’s first stools are thick tar like black

meconium, so pack a small pile of first size nappies for your stay”

“For yourself ‘Mum’, some comfortable

nighties, ones with buttons down the front allow for easy access for

skin-to-skin and breastfeeding. A good length is advisable with slippers/slippersocks/flip-flops for walking around (especially in active labour). Mild wash

products and I always pack my make-up to feel ‘human’ after giving birth (and for the pics) Items

include...

“One of the most exciting things to pack is clothing for your new baby. It is advisable to pack a couple of vests, baby grows

and (my favourite) an outfit for leaving the hospital. A blanket if appropriate for the season may also be packed to place over baby when leaving in their car

Something to consider...Don’t forget your hospital notes!!!

Comfort blankets and toys are known as

“transitional objects” and as the name suggests, can be

very useful in helping babies and toddler make

the transition from awake to asleep. They also help little ones feel more secure when separating from parents – at the nursery or crèche for example.

Because a comforter helps a child to feel safe, calm and happy, its use should not be discouraged, no matter how grubby and worn it looks. If your child has a comfort object it is a healthy sign that they are growing up and learning how to cope with their independence.

At least half of all babies and toddlers have a comforter, and most will choose their own object at around 6 months old and their need for the comforter is at it’s greatest between 18 months and 2 ½ years old.

Babies tend to choose items with a soft texture and a familiar smell, such as a pillow case, soft toy or even mummy’s nightie! If your child doesn’t choose something of their own accord, there is no need to encourage it.

Most comfort objects will not pose a danger if taken into a child’s cot as a sleep aid, but parents should discourage anything with a ribbon or cord on it measuring more than 30cm or any toy with parts that could be chewed or sucked off and choke a child [a teddy’s eyes or nose for example.] Small blankets, muslin squares, pillow cases and so on, made from natural fibres can be considered to be safe, as a child can breathe through them.

Unlike dummies, comfort objects seldom get lost during the night and need finding and replacing.

The main problem is if the object gets lost or left behind somewhere. If this

happens it can be very distressing indeed for a child. For this reason, if you notice that your child is forming an attachment to a particular object, you should try and get hold of another identical one. Alternate

their use so that each becomes equally worn and also so that one can

be washed whilst the other is being used.

Apple, Pear and Cinnamon from ‘New Complete Baby and

Toddler Meal Planner’ Ebury Press £14.99

Apple and pear puree is an ideal first food for a baby food recipe as it is easy to digest and unlikely to cause allergies. Choose sweet apples like the Pink Lady variety or Royal Gala. Apples and pears contain pectin which can slow things down if your baby has loose stools.

Ingredients:2 dessert apples2 ripe pears (eg: Conference pears)4 tbsp pure unsweetened apple juice or waterGenerous pinch of ground cinnamon (optional)

Method:Put the fruit into a saucepan together with apple juice or water and pinch of cinnamon (if using), cover and cook over a low heat until tender (about 6 to 8 minutes).

September sees many children’s first day at Nursery or School. While some can write their name, or can count

to 10; in reality, to free staff to work effectively, they should be able to toilet themselves independently, have name tags on ALL their clothes and Velcro fastenings on those shiny new shoes (no laces please!!). If those issues are addressed, RELAX, you’ve already done a great job, now let the professionals do theirs!

‘What if they cry and won’t be consoled?’ ‘Will they be alright without me?’ No child is left crying inconsolably. Most children who cry initially when Mum or Dad leaves settle within minutes, (though parents are traumatised all day!) However, on the very rare occasions they really don’t settle, are very unhappy or never willingly separate from their parent/

carer, there are a wealth of options, from Mum’s presence nearby, fewer hours/days,

to a delayed start (usually a half term) . All options would be thoroughly discussed with the parent to ensure both they and the child are happy.

‘When do I keep them off school?’ ‘What if they’re ill? There are always trained

staff who recognise the early signs of childhood ailments and other illnesses, so you will always be contacted. If your

child was ill in the night, and is still isn’t 100% it might be a best to keep them at home rather than have them endure a miserable day in school.

‘How can I help give my child the best start to their educational career?’ Talk to them, listen to them, read with them, play with them. It’s really as complex and as simple

as that! And remember, while you might shed a tear on the Big Day; for your little one, it’s

the start of a huge and exciting adventure!

Like most adults, I’ve got my fair share of war stories from my childhood. At 6, I managed to get a cotton bud lodged so far down into my ear that I

had to be taken to hospital to have it removed.

Luckily for me, none of were serious and can now be consigned to the ‘stories to tell my own troopers when they grow up’ file. In a world where we are constantly being told that things aren’t like they used to be, a new survey by the British Red Cross reveals that our troopers are as accident prone as ever. One in ten parents said their child had pushed something so far up their nose it had become stuck, while a fifth of parents said their child had either lodged something in their ear or had a body part trapped somewhere, such as a head in railings or a leg between banister beams. Now, I’m a big believer in letting kids play and explore, and the odd bang and scrape is good as it teaches your troopers independence, how to take (calculated) risks and how to keep themselves safe. As a teacher, I never ceased to be amazed by the amount of pupils who had safely walked themselves to school that morning but

seemingly lost all road sense when taken out as a group with teachers in

charge. They felt they didn’t need to worry about their own safety then - we teachers were taking care of that. I think the same is true with your own troopers: if you take complete responsibility for their safety at all times,

you rob them of the ability to take care of their own safety.

However, that is not the same as providing an

unsafe environment for your troopers. They explore the world through all of their senses: sight, touch, sound, smell and taste. If they can get it into their

hand, chances are they’ll want to get it

into their mouth and their ears, and when they’re still getting to grips with manual dexterity, they can easily poke themselves in the eyes.

Take all of the necessary precautions and keep every - every - potential hazard out of reach. Be aware that the same elements that marketeers use to make a product attractive to parents (bright packaging, interesting shapes etc) make them just as attractive to troopers.

But if the worst happens, and your trooper is in an emergency situation, what do you do? In my book, Commando Dad: Basic Training, I advise all parents to go on a paediatric first aid course because it will not only give you knowledge and information, but also so much more confidence when dealing with an emergency situation.

Since the book came out, the British Red Cross have also created an amazing Baby and Child first aid app that I would highly recommend to all parents. Completely free, this comprehensive app arms parents with all the knowledge they need at their fingertips. It contains clear, straightforward advice on how to help youngsters in an emergency. It features information, videos and tutorials on what to do in an emergency. It also provides advice on how you can make environments safer – from your home and garden, to travelling out and about. You can download it from: www.redcross.org.uk/firstaid Although designed for parents, my troopers really love to go on the app to watch the videos and learn too. My seven year old daughter Liberty can now confidently explain what needs to be done in a variety of emergency situations. A useful adage for all parents to keep in mind is: expect the best but plan for the worst. This is especially true in the case of first aid. Statistically, you’re not likely to be involved in an emergency situation with your trooper - however, statistics will count for nothing if you are faced with a trooper who needs your help and you don’t know what to do. Arm yourself with knowledge and information now.

TOP TIP No 1: Remember: troopers

take their cues from you and will mirror your reaction - if you panic, so will they. In an emergency situation,

keep calm and let your troopers know you are

in control.

TOP TIP No 2:Be warned: troopers have

an almost supernatural reach. Make it your Standard Operating

Procedure to keep everything well out of the way. When putting

up shelves when my troopers were toddlers, I got them to stand on their tip

toes and reach as far as they could up the wall. I then at least doubled

that measurement and put my shelves at that height.

- An empty 2L plastic bottle with lid

- Sharp Scissors (for adult use only!)- Dirt (plants optional)

1. Before your little one begins the craft, take a craft knife or sharp scissors and pierce air holes into the plastic bottle.

2. Add dirt, and plants if you wish, into the bottom of the bottle. You will need the direct in the bottom to weigh the bottle down, and the bugs will like it too!

3. Now add bugs! Guide your bugs into the jug through the open top and then seal it up with the lid, and

observe!
