HAPPY DAYS BAND: Ken Caple, Hubert Kallabis, Marcia Coullahan, Gloria Tapogna, Bud Bye, William DeMichelis

What an enthusiastic group we had this month. I had a great time playing for everyone on Sunday. I think I can say this for the rest of our Happy Days Band as well. It makes us all happy when the audience responds with a great applause. Of course our featured performers Harriet and Peter were outstanding to say the least. Louis Rodriquez was also a special treat for us. We had more standing applause this month than I can remember in recent years. I am glad to see we have two new members join us. We all need to recruit more folks to keep the club vibrant and well. With regret I must announce that Ivan Klitgaard has resigned his position on the Board of Directors of SVAS. Ivan and his wife Ceil have both had more than their share of health problems. Ivan is spending as much time with his wife as possible during their last days together. We all are very sad to see this take place And it is a reminder to all of us that we are marching down the same path in this life. Thank you ,Ivan, for all of your hard work over the years for this Club. A special thanks to Bernie Coullahan for taking our meeting photographs, and Al Cullen for taking Dicks’ place at the raffle ticket table. -Ken

We knew that Happy Days Are Here Again when we heard Ken Caple’s Happy Days Band play that song! And with Beautiful Ohio, the band got our new visitors, Charlie and Erica to dance, and Ray and Mindy danced too.

This Band motivates us! When they played I Can’t Stop Loving You, Ed and Mindy danced to it. They played polkas, waltzes, Rhumbas and Two-steps that got Vic and Barbara Corsiglia to dance also. Their finale was Yes Sir That’s My Baby, and I tell you what, yes sir, they’re a dance band!

WELCOME New Members: Gloria McCarroll , Roldan F. Vigil

President, Ken Caple, mentioned that from now on the SVAS is encouraging indi-vidual members to bring their accordions to play during the pre-program time each month. And master of ceremonies, Bill Tapogna, told us there was a sign-up sheet on the entrance table for all individuals who want to play during the pre-program to sign. That way the Society could determine how many would be play-ing each month and let the players know how many minutes each one would be able to play. And Ken and Bill encouraged us, saying that even if we feel a bit shy about playing in front of an audience, we don’t have to worry because the early meeting atmosphere is very informal and in some cases, “other oriented,”,so just play and enjoy. We want to welcome four first-timers, Dutch and Melanie and Charlie and Erica. We hope they enjoyed the entertainment. Bill mentioned that Ivan Klitgaard is still taking care of his wife regarding her illness. Our thoughts and prayers are with them both. Bill then announced that Cotati Accor-dion Festival tickets are still available at the entrance table. Then he introduced us to the Santa Clara Valley Organ Club members that were at our August meet-ing and reminded us that the Organ Club meets at the Hofbrau on the third Sunday of each month

Another real audience motivator is Garland Cheatham. His daughter, Kristina Hansen, photo’d and recorded his performance on her I-pad as he played songs we love to sing, like Four Leaf Clover, Baby Face, Give My Re-gards to Broadway and Peg O’ My Heart. Garland also played Under the Double Eagle and Lady of Spain. It was also a pleasure to have Kristina come and “take the pix.”

Raffle-time, William DeMichelis won half the pot and the CD, “Swiss Days.” Sue Douglas won the Hofbrau meal ticket and the bottle of wine.

Louis Rodriguez played Chiquilin de Bachin, composed by Astor Piazolla. When he played Romanza Andaluza, composed by Pablo de Sarasate, Louis played several individual bass notes, almost like playing the melody on the bass! With Gypsy Airs, com-posed by Curt Mahr, Louis’ piano-side fingers were FLYING! Same thing when he played Beka Roka, composed by Grock. He wasn’t even looking at the keyboard and yet his fingers hit every correct note rap-idly! His finale was Little Sunshine

Santa Rosalia Fishermen’s Festival

September, weekend after Labor Day, the St. Rosalia is the patron saint of Palermo and Sicillian Americans liv-ing in Monterey, CA observe a two day festival in her honor in hope she will protect the fishermen at sea. The festival includes fireworks, parades, water events, con-tests and colorful fishing net decorations in downtown

Our featured performer, Peter DiBono, and talented violinist, Harriet Newhart, are totally coordinated! It’s almost like they’re one person! Peter displayed phenomenal glissando and he stood up the whole time while playing his full size accordion. After playing a medley, including Dancing In the Dark, Pe-ter jokingly said, “For a twenty dollar bill we’ll play whatever you request.” We all chuckled. But gener-ously enough, Peter and Harriet played many re-quests, including Blue Tango, Amapola, La Cumpar-sita, You Belong to My Heart, Hernando’s Hideaway and O’ Solo Mio. Even though comedian, Bill Ta-pogna got up and waved a twenty dollar bill in front of Peter, and, again, we laughed, Peter said, “No, no, just kidding.” More fun! Then people requested more songs that we sang including That’s Amore, Danny Boy, I Could Have Danced All Night, Never On Sunday, Amazing Grace and I Can’t Give You

Anything But Love. They even played a medley of It’s Been a Long Long Time, Singing In the Rain, Lara’s Theme and Mexicali Rose. We sang Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Melody of Love and Always. Their last piece was Begin the Beguine. It impressed me that Harriet could play the violin so softly at times, especially toward the end of a melody. And, as was brought out about Peter in the July newsletter introduction, “You name it, I do it!.” We named it and Peter and Harriet did it.

Sunday 7 Band playing in the 1st Friday monthly festival in downtown los Altos. The Los Altos Chamber of Com-merce sponsors this event for the duration of the summer season. Sunday seven has particated from the beginning of the season.

A DAY AT THE RANCH: SVAS member SUE CRISTALLO, who is a long-time accordion player and afficionado is the owner and operator of "Rancho Cristallo" a working horse ranch, located in the rolling hills of Los Gatos, overlooking Lexington Reservoir (what's left of it!). Among the many unique features of this ranch are the two fabulous Tree Houses built in massive oak trees adjacent to the main house. The first of these was built several years ago, and has been featured in the San Jose Mercury News. The second is a recent addition connected to the original by a ramp, and the tree house is only accessible via an ornamental spiral staircase.

Sue and her foreman MYRON RIESER invited the Silicon Valley Leathercrafters Guild to the ranch to hold the Guild's annual Bar-B-Que on July 26, 2014.

Bill Tapogna and fellow SVAS members Art and Margy Brown, and John Mendez, all of whom are members of the Leather Guild, were among the attendees. In addition to the BBQ, the Guild members held a "Show 'n Tell" of a wide variety of hand-made leather items, including saddles, holsters, purses, belts, hats, knife sheaths and many other beautiful items.

Sue commented that.it was her long-time desire to hear live music being played from the tree houses, but this had never happened! Well, Bill Tapogna just happened to have brought along his trusty Dallape accordion, and with it climbed up the spiral stair-case to the highest point in the new tree house (see photo), and...viola! Live music! And Sue, with her Columbo accordion, joined Bill at the original tree house and a fun jam resulted! This was followed by more music fea-turing Bill and his wife Gloria, playing her beautiful soprano Recorder. A great day, in a beautiful location, thanks to two wonderful folks! -Bill Tapogna
