The fair this year will be opened by our new incumbent, the Rev.Jonathan Barker. The fun dog show returns and I understand there are some newcategories, Dog with the waggiest tail, that sort of thing. Stalls include: book and plant stalls, tombola, afternoon teas in theReading Room, huge *white elephant inside the church. A chance to throw a fewballs, win some coconuts, smash some china, buy cakes and take a chance with araffle ticket for food hampers, whisky, evening meal raffle for two. There aretraditional games for children (yes adults too). The Tug-o-War will take placearound 4ish, weather permitting.

As this is mainly an outdoor event I would like to ask you to pleaseremember to pray for good weather, we will all be there come rain or shine. So,why not come along and join in, it would be no fun without YOU, oh and don’tforget to bring your purse!

SOUND RECORDING (7)When CD players became available in the early 1980s the general

public, and manufacturers, quickly realised the many advantages of digitalrecordings over any previous systems. But the old Audio Cassette still hadsome points in its favour. Most importantly, there was at first no way for theamateur to make CD recordings at home; only pre-recorded records wereavailable. And secondly, as a CD disc measured about 5 inches in diameter,CD players could not be as small as the latest portable cassette players, andwere not suitable for joggers and cyclists who feel lonely unless they canlisten to music as they travel !

The Japanese firm Sony quickly responded by developing not one, buttwo, portable systems enabling digital programs to be both played and recorded. The first of these was Digital Audio Tape (DAT), which used magnetic tape about1/8 of an inch wide enclosed in a cassette looking very like the old Audio Cassette, but considerably smaller. One tape will play for up to two hours. If it were recordedalong the length of the tape, like an analogue recording, it would not be possible tofit two hours of program in so small a device, so a complex system had beendevised, with the recording and playback heads on a rapidly rotating drum, set at anangle, and the narrow recording track going diagonally across the tape, a systemwhich had been devised previously for video recording.

The DAT recorder was first marketed in 1987, and was followed just fiveyears later by the MiniDisc recorder. This used a disc only 21/2 inches in diameter, permanently enclosed in its own cassette, which proved to be much more robustthan the DAT system. The MiniDisc was, in fact, just a miniature version of a 5inch CD, and used exactly the same system of processing the sound as the full-sizeCD, with a playing time of 80 minutes. But both the DAT and the MiniDisc systemsallowed the user to make high quality recordings at home, and both systemspromised to become popular among connoisseurs who could afford their highprices.

However, things happened quickly in the 1990s, as we shall describe innext month's instalment. Firstly a system was devised enabling the home user torecord on a 5 inch CD disc. And then - with the most revolutionary development inthe history of sound recording - a method was developed which involved no movingparts. As a result digital tape and digital discs soon became obsolete. Sonydiscontinued selling DAT equipment in 2005, and MiniDisc equipment in 2011.

The Roman Catholic school at Lartington was founded in the17th century and closed in the 1930’s. It is known that from at least theearly part of the 19th century the appointed headmaster/headmistresslived in the two storey house attached to the school. The clock towerwas commissioned by Monsignor Thomas Witham to celebrateQueen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887. The upper part of theTower contains a large bell and below this is a substantial brass clockbelieved to have come from Lartington Hall. The movement of theclock is now assisted by electricity but as it still has a woodenpendulum which is affected by humidity and weather, it is difficultfor the present owners to maintain accurate time. It was recentlyserviced by the well known clock specialists “Smiths of Derby.”

Most of the teachers at the school were from Ireland or Stella,Blaydon where the Catholic Witham family were based and theNational Census Returns for Lartington from 1841-1911 seem toconfirm this. June Watson

COMPUTER HAZARDSMany readers will have read in the national press about a new

computer virus, called CryptoLocker, which is attacking machines all overthe world, and giving criminals millions of pounds in ransom money. IfCryptoLocker gets into your machine it can encrypt a group of files, such asyour documents, photographs, videos or music, making them unusable. Thecriminal will offer to send you the key needed to restore them, but willdemand a ransom, that may start off at about £100 if you pay within, say, three days. If you have not paid within the time specified, the criminal mayincrease the charge, or encrypt a further group of files, or both. Even if youpay, you are not certain to receive the key. This threat is so serious that thelaw enforcement agencies of 11 countries have combined in an attempt toovercome it and find the culprits, but with only limited success.

Your only defence is to keep CryptoLocker out of your computer inthe first place. Whenever you receive an email from an unknown source, hesitate before opening an attachment, and never click on a link unless youare sure it is safe. Remember that even if you recognise the name in the"From" box it may have been forged by someone who has stolen a friend'saddress list.

But the only strong defence is to have good antiviris protection, which is kept constantly up to date. See your Parish Magazines for August2010, p.19, and July 2011, p.12 (both of which are on the Magazinewebsite). And you must keep abreast of any updates distributed by youroperating system provider (see the Parish Magazine, October 2010, p.19).

Also, bear in mind that if CryptoLocker does get into your machineit could also corrupt the backup copies of your files. When the drive ormemory stick holding your backups is not in use, it is a good idea todisconnect it from the rest of the equipment. __________________________________

Despite the large sums lost to elaborate scams such as thatdescribed above, it seems likely that many criminals can steal as muchmoney by the far simpler method of persuading gullible victims themselvesto reveal all their personal information, so that their identity can be stolen. The culprit can then impersonate the victim, and can take out loans in thevictim's name, or drain his or her bank account. See the Parish Magazine,May 2011, p.17.

A few days ago I received an email which, at first sight, appeared tobe from H.M. Revenue & Customs, advising me that I had overpaid incometax last year, and was due to receive a refund. But before this could be sent Imust complete and return an attached form.

I quickly realised this was a scam. If I had returned the completedform it would have given the sender sufficient information to empty mybank account. Subsequently a Google search showed that many others hadreceived identical letters, some dating back to 2009. By a remarkablecoincidence we were all owed exactly £178.25 ! EDITOR

PRINCESS SALLY AND PRINCESS SELINA

"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Mole and family! It's good to see you.How are you all? It's a better day. Can you stay and talk awhile?" "Ofcourse" said Mr. Mole. "We can stay all day." "Well," said PrincessSally, "we just wondered if you had been outside lately and seen thenew fence." "No, we haven't. We have just come out from our home,as the weather is improving." "Well, our Mother has told us thatmore animals are due to arrive in the zoo, and a new fence has justbeen put up around the old one, and around our play ground. Wethought we must tell you in case you burrowed near it." "Wow!" saidMr. Mole. "It is good of you to warn us. We must find another route,so that all our friends can find us."

Princess Selina then asked Mr. Mole where he thought theyshould put their new den. Could they build it on top of the Moles'underground den? "Oh, yes please. That would be lovely," said Mrs.Mole. "What do you say, Syd and Tommy?" "Yes, we would lovethat," Syd replied.

"Well children," said Mrs. Mole, "I think we have madeenough decisions for the moment. Off we all go to chat about ournext moves. Good night! See you soon." J. Scott
