Apple-Q computer club profile!

Apple-Q since 1979 has been offering training in the use of Apple computers to members from all walks of life. At 35 years, it is one of the oldest Apple Computer Clubs in the world, and its training and administration are provided by its members completely voluntarily.!

Apple equipment is enjoying an increase in popularity, with the release of the iMac, MacBook, iPod, iPhone and iPad in great variety over recent years. Educationists and businesses of every sort show an increasing preference for Apple products.!

Details of the Club's programs are to be found at its website, http://www.apple-q.org.au/, informing readers that ...!

"We offer a range of services to club members to help them get the most from their Macintosh computer, iPhone and iPad including demonstrations on a range of topics plus one-on-one assistance, training on apps as chosen by members, a monthly magazine, book/magazine lending library, software library and online forums."!

Monthly meetings are held in the Art/Music Building, MacGregor High School on the third Sunday of each month except December.!

!

It is amazing that the Apple][ line of computers lasted for 15 years from 1977 and you were still able to run software purchased in 1977 on your IIgs or Apple IIe card in 1992.!

Even today there are people keeping the saying “Apple II forever” alive and well by developing new hardware to run

with Apple ][ . There is a tiny IDE hard disk controller and many development boards produced over the last couple of years.

The latest board to be developed is the “Apple 2 Pi”, which is a Raspberry Pi development board that has been interfaced to the Apple ][.!

Follow the link https://ultimateapple2.com/!

If you have visited eBay recently you will see Apple II systems up there for sale or auction at prices from $80 to

$500, although I have not seen too many bids as yet.!

!Virtually all Apple II software is now available on the net as freeware

or abandon-ware along with hundreds of scanned Apple II books and manuals, along with a program ”ADT” that will allow to download the

5.25” and 3.5” disk images to your MAC, PC or Linux system.!Anyone who remembers the Apple II days will remember the

“Kansas Applefest”, well it is still going and was last held on 22 to 27 july 2014.!

Follow the link http://www.kansasfest.org/.So the saying “Apple II forever” still rings true today.!

See you at the next Apple Q meeting.!

Next Training Workshop:!11.00am to 3.30pm on Sunday 24th of August 2014. (To be confirmed). Venue: Arts Department, MacGregor School, Blackwattle Street, MacGregor!

Les Isdale, Training Co-ordinator,!(07) 3801 4797 ... [email protected]!

The July workshop!

It was 'over-subscribed', but we smiled nicely, and Leigh rose manfully to the occasion, running through the complexities of networking our computers and other home devices, to the next room, or the next continent.!

The prospectus read: Mac OS X Server – Using your Mac to share files or create a web Site to share with the world. The tutorial files he provided are comprehensive (I nearly said 'exhaustive', which is near the mark) and best of all, he finished the day rounding up the stragglers by hands-on help to get us file sharing.!

Where to now?!

The August meeting brings us presentations on Airport Express, the iPad, and Audacity. That should widen our horizons a bit.!

Apple Press Info tells us that "with simultaneous dual band 802.11n, the affordable AirPort Express is powerful enough to run a home Wi-Fi network. Connect up to 10 users to share your wireless network. Print documents, photos, and more from any room in the house to one central printer. And stream your iTunes music through your stereo or powered speakers using AirPlay.”"

Cable are starting to sound passé.!

iPads are a never-ending source of pleasure – and surprise. Michele will continue to identify uses in both novelty and productivity. Campbell, our Sound expert, wants to reveal some of the refinements and strengths of the sound editing application Audacity. Bring your own bagpipes.!

Our August Workshop could centre on these, or other preferred topics suggested by members at the meeting. Get your nomination ready.!

Operational Details!Workshops run from 11am to 3.30pm. Lunch is BYO, and you'll need your Mac to get a hands-on experience from the tutorial.!

When you email in reply, to register to attend workshops, it is advisable to give your phone number in case plans alter, and you need to be notified.!

BYO computer, lunch and drinks.!

Apple-Q training is available free, for members only, but new members will be signed up on the day, by payment of the annual subscription and joining fee.!

Our workshops try to limit attendance to eight students per workshop max. To make sure that all eight places in a workshop are filled, it is necessary to arrive by 11am or risk losing your registration.!

Audacity, exploring sound conversion.!

You’ve all heard references to Audacity and how it can be a useful audio editing tool for you, but what does that mean? Here’s what they say:!

Using an acronym, it is a DAW, that’s Digital Audio Workplace, software that you install on your computer so that you can transfer audio recordings from such sources as old records and tapes into contemporary recording media such as your computer, MP3 player, iPad, or smart phone. You can also save these converted files to a CD, DVD or USB flash drive.!

Why would one want to do this?!

You may have your own reasons, but convenience is probably one of the best one. Saving your old records and cassettes to your iPad or a USB drive, means that you can then take those old favourites anywhere with you to enjoy without having to go through the rigmarole of the turntables or cassette decks, amplifiers and loud speakers of yore. (That “old” hardware will still have its’ place in your home for serious listening and the actual conversion from that preceding format in electrical signals that your computer and Audacity can converse with.!

You may have a wall at home that looks like this: (Years ago I did have a friend who did! Which was all well and good until he fell in love with a woman who lived in a big city way down south and had to move. Inconvenient as his car was an MGB!)!

The vinyl record is great as it has pure analogue sound with a frequency response greater than any of the digital recording formats. But you were limited to what was on the record when it was created.!

!

Apple Bug - August 2014! 31

Audacity by Campbell Sharp!

Page 32: August 2014 Volume 34 Number 8 Library Edition · 2014. 10. 18. · Using Overdrive to Loan eBooks by Leigh Harvey! Note:! this tutorial will be using a free iPad app called Overdrive,

If you wanted to create your own play list, you may have resorted to one of these:!

!!Those of you who were present when I discussed tailoring your iTunes to improve the storage and sound quality will recall that there are several types of digital sound file storage using methods of data compression enabling us to store many hours of our music without using giga bytes of data. Meaning that one USB stick (I don’t need an illustration of one of those, you’ve probably got several within arms reach as you read this) can hold dozens of LP records worth of music.!

Which in turn means that you can carry that music with you, from device to device, where ever you may wander in this wide brown land.!

! Apple Bug - August 2014! 32

And ended up with a collection of these:!

Audacity cont’d!

Page 33: August 2014 Volume 34 Number 8 Library Edition · 2014. 10. 18. · Using Overdrive to Loan eBooks by Leigh Harvey! Note:! this tutorial will be using a free iPad app called Overdrive,

!So, with Audacity loaded on your Mac, the current version is 2.0.4 and Leigh has included it on the club DVDs before, suitable playback hardware and a couple of leads, you can transfer those favourites into your Mac’s hard drive, tinker with it a bit to improve the perceived sound quality and then save it to the convenient format and device of your choosing.!

We had a brief robust discussion about suitable USB turntables at the July meeting that will make the transfer practical. In my opinion, most of the low price USB turntables being offered are not a good idea. If you do have a couple of hundred records that meant a lot to you at the time that you bought them, it may well be worthwhile investing in a quality dedicated USB turntable. The Audio- technica is presently advertised on-line for a touch under $260 and offers 45, 33 1/3 and 78 rpm (not all USB turntables include 78rpm capability. But as Audacity includes the ability to correct a 78 rpm record played at an alternative speed back to the correct pitch, this may not be seen as disadvantage).!

In the past I have used direct line from a turntable into my computer and applied appropriate recording bias corrections to make it sound as the engineers in the recording studio intended, but the current Audacity has deleted several of the preset corrections.!

!!!

Apple Bug - August 2014! 33

Audacity cont’d!

Page 34: August 2014 Volume 34 Number 8 Library Edition · 2014. 10. 18. · Using Overdrive to Loan eBooks by Leigh Harvey! Note:! this tutorial will be using a free iPad app called Overdrive,

!!Here is what was available with one curve illustrated:!

But this omission is of no real concern because within the graphic equaliser, you can create any compensation curve that you believe will give you the optimum sound quality on you chosen device in your preferred listening environment.!

And to help you achieve that, Audacity offers you a virtual box of magic tricks that can remove those pops and clicks and rumbles and other noisy artefacts that can accumulate in the original recording medium. (It doesn’t really matter if you are unable to see them clearly here as they are only a click away when you have Audacity open on your Mac.)!

!!

!!!In short, Audacity can be a versatile tool that can bring back precious memories that those records hold for you in a contemporary environment, allowing you to preserve the original records so that they will not risk further degradation in the harsh reality of today.!

With Audacity, you can analyse the original sounds and use it to assist you to remove or reduce unwanted additions that have materialised over the years, enhance the playback to compensate for both the playback environment and changes in your hearing acuity and take it with you to enjoy as you would like to.!
