Hair loss can happen in several
situations; however, many women
don’t know that it can occur dur-
ing pregnancy. Usually after the
baby is born or while the body is
going through hormonal changes,
there are simple preventive mea-
sures to ensure that there will be
little to no hair loss.
#1: Take your prenatal vitamins as
prescribed by your doctor:
During pregnancy your body
shares a lot of nutrients with your
baby which means you may expe-
rience mineral or vitamin deficien-
cies if you don’t take the addition-
al vitamins. Always discuss with
your doctor what nutrients you
are lacking.
#2: No major chemical services
while pregnant:
Chemical services such as color,
relaxers, and smoothing systems
are not recommended, especially
if you didn’t have them regularly
before pregnancy. Your body is
going through hormonal changes,
which can cause your hair to react
differently to the chemicals. Some
suggestions are:
• Ask your hairstylist to perform
a strand test to see the reaction
your hair will have.
• Notify your hairstylist as soon as
possible about your pregnancy
• Schedule chemical services less
frequently while pregnant
• If it’s your first time receiving
chemical services wait 4 months
after delivery.
#3: Eat Healthy:
Having a healthy lifestyle is key
in any situation, but especially
while pregnant. Therefore, eating
foods that are rich in vitamins and
minerals that you are lacking will
help promote hair growth.
Hair loss for most pregnant wom-
en occurs one to five months after
delivery. Nevertheless in most
cases the hair loss experienced
is not bald spots but excessive
shedding. By taking your prenatal
vitamins, limiting your chemical
services, and eating healthy you
will be helping with the regrowth
of your hair. Every woman’s hair is
different so be sure to inform your
hairstylist about any changes that
may affect your hair services.

The
By Serena Harris

Perhaps you have heard the expression, “this is the greatest thing since sliced bread!” Bread had been around since the beginning of civilization, but once it was cut into slices a whole new world of culinary possibilities opened up, not the least of which was the ability to easily make sandwiches. But what has any of this got to do with being a genius?
Well meet Tony Hansberry II, student of Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School, a magnet school located in Jacksonville, Florida that specializes in all things medical. The school is so committed to the medical field that students learn how to master suturing by the eighth grade. Tony is the son of an African Methodist Episcopal Church pastor father and registered nurse mother.
Tony was an intern at the University of Florida’s Center for Simulation Education and Safety Re-search based at Shands Jacksonville. It was at this esteemed university that Tony had his “sliced bread” moment. He developed a process of sewing up pa-tients who have been given hysterectomies which will reduce the risk of complications and make it easier to perform the difficult procedure for less experienced surgeons. By the way Tony was 14 when he made this breakthrough!
One professor said that what Tony accomplished is quite complicated and to help us non-medical people understand the procedure he used this analogy, “In-stead of buttoning your shirt side to side, what about doing it up and down?” What that means is that it was difficult for surgeons to properly stitch closed the tube where the patient’s uterus had been. Tony’s idea was to stitch or suture the tube closed vertically instead of horizontally and his idea worked.
Thanks to Tony’s innovation, the surgical time has been reduced and will be helpful to many surgeons who don’t often perform hysterectomies. No doubt with this sort of forward thinking, Tony will be able to realize his dream of becoming a University of Florida trained neurosurgeon. We’re betting this won’t be the last we hear of this bright, young genius!

Trying to carve out a career in
Hollywood can be a herculean
task for black women, but ever
since Mrs. Pinkett Smith ap-
peared in the hit comedy TV
show “A Different World” she has
been working steadily. She has
proven to be tough and resilient
just like her character, Lena
James, from the show.
No doubt her television acting
career is what led her to bigger
and better projects. In 1993 she
starred in the gritty big-screen
movie Menace II Society. The fol-
lowing year, she tried her hand at
comedy, starring in A Low Down
Dirty Shame, opposite comedic
genius, Keenan Ivory Wayan. But
things got serious again in 1996
when she landed a leading role in
the successful crime drama Set It
Off, starring mega stars Vivica A.
Fox and Queen Latifah.
In 1997, Jada married the love
of her life, rapper and actor Will
Smith. After almost 20 years of
marriage, the power couple is
still going strong. Together they
have two children, Jaden 16 and
Willow 14, both of whom seem
destined to follow their parents
into the entertainment business,
having dabbled in both music and
films.
In addition to starring in success-
ful movie franchises such as the
Matrix and the Nutty Professor,
Pinkett also returned to the small
screen to star in the medical
drama Hawthorne which she
also executive produced. For the
first season of Fox’s crime drama
Gotham she played the role of
notorious gangster Fish Mooney.
As if her acting career wasn’t
enough, Pinkett created a web
series called Red Table Talks to
encourage dialogue within fami-
lies. Besides that she also start-
ed a metal band called Wicked
Wisdom in which she handles
the lead vocal duties. The band
released its debut album in Feb-
ruary 2006 and went on tour with
heavy metal band Sevendust that
same year.
She may be married to one of the
most famous men in Hollywood,
but Jada is definitely a star in her
own right. A woman with her tal-
ent clearly has more to offer the
world and we anxiously await her
next project, whatever it may be!

SUMMER ACTIVITIES WE ALL ENJOY
5 Summer is in full swing! Don’t you just love it! Plus, it is the perfect time of the year to indulge in pleasure and leisure. The lazy summer days are the time when the warm breeze creates ripples in lakes and hearts alike, flowers bloom bright and radiant and young hearts find joy.
It’s the time to enjoy the thrill that the season brings. The beaches, barbeque, camping, fishing - all the things that make summer the great time it is. So, if you are looking to indulge in some fun and thrill-ing activities before the end of summer, here’s a list of five summer activities:
45 – 1966mag.com
1. Hit the beach Beaches are the best place to be in the summer. There’s nothing like a lazy sum-mer day at the beach with hamburgers on the grill and fresh, ice-cold lemonade. Summertime you will find beaches crowded with all the beach enthusiasts en-joying the sun with friends and family. Don’t leave out the children. Watch them have a great time building sand castles and running around in sheer joy.
2. Summer sports Summer is the time people hit the great outdoors ready to play their favorite sports. Beach volleyball is a com-mon sight. Rafting, surfing, swimming, waterskiing are also popular sports activi-ties during summer beach outings. To keep cool many indulge in ice-sports such as ice-skating, ice hockey and snowboarding. Cycling, diving, tennis, baseball and golf are also popular out-door activities.
3. FishingDuring summer, many differ-ent fish varieties are avail-able to anglers. As a general rule, the best time for fish-ing is at dusk and dawn. . During this time of the year, estuaries and coastal waters are filled with fish. Some popular catch are spotted seatrout, red drum, floun-ders, red rock, black drum, pompano and more.
4. Summer camps Camps are a favorite during the summer season espe-cially with children. Summer camp conjures up colorful and zesty images of differ-ent fun activities. However, summer camps also serve specific purposes. There are camps for computer learn-ing, performing arts, for chil-dren with special needs and for weight loss programs. Summer camps are the place where children spend an extended period of time away from home for the first time. It provides them the opportunity to develop character, boost conference, make new friends, build up confidence and discover new interests.
5. Relax and enjoy Summer is also the time to indulge in the luxury of re-laxation - be it snoozing off in a hammock, sailing in a boat, or bird-watching. This is what lazybones love to do during the summer months.
SUMMER ACTIVITES
THE KEY TO ACHIEVING FLAT ABS
Summer is in full effect and we all want to have hot, toned, beach bod-
ies to show off. For most women we want to have
flat stomachs with nicely sculpted abs, but we
know the abs just don’t miraculously show up. We have to work to get those abs and we may automatically think we
need to do about a gazil-lion crunches to get the
results we want.
46 – 1966mag.com
Well ladies think again. Doing crunches will only take you so far, the key is to work on reducing your stomach and/or abdomi-nal fat which involves a combination of diet and exercise. You may not
be able to see your abs right now because they
are buried under a bunch of stomach fat, but they are there just waiting to
be unveiled by you. Once you start reducing the
stomach fat, the abs will start to appear and then you can do the exercises necessary to help further tone and enhance them.
47 – 1966mag.com
The following is a list of foods to add to your diet which help you reduce your stomach fat so you can watch your abs
go from flabby to flat.
•Almonds – They are a great source of magnesium which is a must have mineral for your body that produces energy, builds and maintains muscle tissue and controls blood sugar. Regulating your blood sugar levels helps to prevent food cravings that can lead to overeating and weight gain.
•Eggs – They provide proteins and amino acids which do everything from manufactur-ing muscle fibers to brain chemicals. Also researchers at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center discovered that people who ate eggs in the morning felt less hungry throughout the day than when breakfast contained complex carbohydrates like ba-gels.
•Apples – The journal Nutrition conducted a study and learned that overweight women who ate three apples or pears a day for three months lost more weight than women who were fed a similar diet and given oat cookies instead of fruit. A large apple can contain up to five grams of fiber and is made up of about 85% water which helps you to feel full when you eat it.
•Vegetable Soup – You will be more suc-cessful losing weight by eating a broth-based soup two times a day as opposed to eating a snack food with the same amount of calories as the soup. Studies also show that people who eat the soup tend to main-tain a total weight loss of 16 pounds after one year. Clearly, eating soup helps get the weight off and keeps it off!
•Yogurt – The pro-biotic bacteria in most yo-gurts keep the digestive track healthy which leads to less gas, bloating and constipation that can cause your stomach to look fat and bloated.
•Leafy Greens – Excellent sources of fiber and calcium and are low in calories which will help to shrink your waistline. Eat plenty of spinach, kale, collard, mustard and turnip greens, they are a great way to increase your energy before your next workout.
48 – 1966mag.com
49 – 1966mag.com
Try incorporating these foods into your daily diet and before you know
it you will be the beauty on the beach and the toast of the town!
51 – 1966mag.com
52 – 1966mag.com
The sparkling blue of the ocean laps against the white sands of a calm, quiet beach. The hot and intense summer sun hangs in the blue sky above. People flock under the shady spots on the beach, ei-ther from the palm trees and their leaves or an arrangement of umbrellas in the sand.
The clink of glasses and bottles is heard as people hydrate themselves. More chairs and tables are needed as more people gather. Bringing furniture to a beach gathering is extremely smart, and with portable furniture this becomes quite an easy task.
On the beach, sand is a major player, and the furniture needs to be resistant to the detrimental effects of it as well.
Beach furniture is a very common find in the cars of those who enjoy outdoor activities. The variety of beach furniture is nearly limitless. Beach furniture reacts well to the same environment they are specialized for - the sea and the shore.
One of the most important aspects of beach furniture is that it needs to be built to resist both sea salt corrosion and sand wear. Beach furniture is possibly the most portable type of furniture on the market today. These pieces are often built to be able to fold easily and into com-pact shapes.
53 – 1966mag.com
The joints of beach furniture are very small with large sleeves to accommodate bending. This enables the furniture to be folded into a very small shape. This size allows for easy packing in cars and overall portability. Packing trunks for camping or other outdoor excursions is made easier.
Brass is one of the few metals that resist sea salt and its corrosion, which is why beach furniture can use this metal well. Brass can also simply be the coating for these pieces as well. Cloth that is light but sturdy is used to cross over the bars of these pieces, which enables the folding of the furniture.
The ease of replacing the cloth of these chairs makes them last for a very long time. Replacing the pieces of cloth can result in these items seeming like new. Other types of this furniture are crafted from metal, plastic, or wood.
The advantage of wood over metal is that wood does not rust. Wood, however, is very heavy when compared to lightweight metal furniture. Woods most suited for beach environments are lightwoods like ash. Driftwood is also used in an ironic and eccentric way to make these pieces. The fragility of driftwood is offset by its unmatched silky texture.
HARD KNOCK LIFEAN AMERICAN RED TABLE WINE
