Carer’s Trusted Assessor Organisations

THANK YOU Thank you to everyone that was involved in carer’s week.

Carers week 2015 aimed to raise awareness about the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

Events throughout carers week overall were a big success with many carers attending events all over Lincolnshire.

We have been made aware of distribution problems for the Newsletter and it is being looked into. We will rectify this as soon as possible. If you have any further concerns please contact: LCYCP [email protected] or call: 01522 846911.

Keeping Cool Top Tips! The following advice applies to everybody when it comes to keeping cool and comfortable – reducing health risks:

Shut windows and pull down the shades when it is hotter outside. If it’s safe, open them for ventilation when it is cooler.

Avoid the heat: stay out of the sun and don’t go out between 11am and 3pm (the hottest part of the day) if you’re vulnerable to the effects of heat.

Keep rooms cool by using shades or reflective material outside the windows. If this isn’t possible, use light-coloured curtains and keep them closed (metallic blinds and dark curtains can make the room hotter).

Have cool baths or showers, and splash yourself with cool water.

Drink cold drinks regularly, such as water and fruit juice. Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol.

Stay tuned to the weather forecast on the radio or TV, or on the Met Office website http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/.

Plan ahead to make sure you have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medications you need.

Identify the coolest room in the house so you know where to go to keep cool.

Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat if you go outdoors.

Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves.

Tell your Support Worker/Trusted Assessor (who did your Carers Assessment), if you have a change in circumstances. They

Munro Medical Centre in Spalding recognises the important role that Carers play and maintains a register of known Carers; however the practice team are aware that friends and family often don’t recognise themselves as Carers.

With the involvement of their patient group (of which some members are both patients and carers themselves) the practice has developed a dedicated “Carers Corner” in the waiting room displaying information and support groups that are available to help identify and support carers of all ages.

They have also introduced a Carers Champion, Lisa, from the

reception team; Lisa is supported by Siobhan, from the nursing team who regularly signposts patients and their carers to support agencies with her work on avoiding admissions which often involves patients with long term conditions.

New patients to the practice are asked to identify themselves as Carers at registration, the Practice is in the process of developing information packs to be supplied to new patients and newly identified Carers.

What support does your local surgery provide to Carers? Contact Lincolnshire Carers and Young Carers Partnership with your feedback.

The Care Act has brought about many changes for carers in Lincolnshire, ensuring that they are well supported, and able to thrive in their caring roles.

Lincolnshire Carers and Young Carers Partnership, care and support organisations who all form part of the partnership; have been working hard to ensure that these changes result in a seamless service for carers.

One of these changes affects the way in which assessment and reviews are carried out. Although the new system is not operational yet, over the next few months some new ways of working will be introduced, giving carers more control and choice.

Carers wanting information and advice will be able to call

the Customer Service Team at Lincolnshire County Council, where your query will be handled directly. If you would like a Carers Assessment, then the person you are talking to at the Customer Service Team will arrange that for you. In some cases you will be referred to a Trusted Assessor, as currently who can either do the assessment over the phone or face to face, either at home or somewhere that’s mutually convenient

The way we assess and support carers is changing. If you have had a previous assessment, and not heard from us for a while, and your caring needs have changed, then please do ring to see how we can help – 01522 782 224

Previously Carers Emergency Response Plans have only been

available to those people who have a Carers Assessment. One of the forthcoming changes is that anyone, regardless of whether they meet the criteria for an assessment can have access to planning a Carers Emergency Response Plan. – CERS

It gives you peace of mind in an emergency that the person you care for will receive help and support while you are not there.

It is a plan, developed by you that states who will look after the person you care for, should an emergency happen to you. This is what happens:

You create your own emergency plan

The plan is registered with the Carers Team

Once the plan is

registered you receive a Carers Identification and Emergency Card, which you can carry with you at all times.

It has a link to a 24 hour emergency telephone number than will help activate your plan when necessary. For more information call: 01522 782 224.

The RADAR National Key Scheme (NKS) offers independent access to disabled people to around 9,000 locked public toilets

around the country. The National Key Scheme (NKS),

sometimes known as the RADAR Scheme, was developed because some public toilets designed for disabled

people had to be locked to prevent damage and misuse. The scheme aims to provide disabled key holders with independent access to the toilets provided for them and increase the

likelihood of the facilities being in a useable state.Over 400 local authorities in all parts of the

country have now adopted the scheme. In addition to public conveniences, toilets for disabled people provided by a wide range of other public, voluntary and commercial organisations have been fitted with the NKS lock. So it can now be found in shopping centres, country parks, railway and bus stations, bars, motorway service areas and sports venues.

Respite – My ExperienceWe have received Harry’s direct payment for this years’ respite, and we have decided to let him go to local Nursing Home for a single day or half a day whenever my time for a respite break comes round, except for the very occasional week away. I have had 2 away days so far, both days out with Shaws, a local coach company. The first was to an award winning plant nursery near Birmingham, the second, yesterday, to London to see Les Miserables.

The arrangements I had to make were as follows. I had to book him into the Home for a day at a cost of £40 (they are happy to have him), book a driver from the local car scheme to take and fetch him (cost £5) , give instructions to the carers that get him up in the mornings, to give him breakfast, put him in the correct wheelchair, organise the front door key, fill his bag with medicines, pads, a book, glasses, and the wheelchair footrests, leave instructions for the driver to place the key on string round Harrys neck for the return journey.

So we only do this every 4 to 8 weeks, and I find he likes it, and I feel much better about not being away at night when he is at home.

I played the sound track of the musical this morning for him over the internet, so he felt part of my day. As he is starting to get very forgetful, this sparked memories of his school history lessons, (a thing he has never before talked about).

I would like to possibly find another carer to accompany me on a respite day, as I was alone yesterday among married couples and friend couples.

PDA Parents Support Group Lincoln/Notts & E.Midlands

A Parent Carer’s StoryI am from Lincoln and have a 9 year old son diagnosed ASD/PDA/Aspergers. I had been meeting up with Emma Morris from Mansfield who also has a 9 year old son diagnosed ASD/ PDA. PDA is a very complex condition and normal strategies for ASD children tend not to work for PDA children.

Emma and I have been members of some Facebook PDA forums. We decided to set up the group as parenting a PDA child can be very difficult, challenging and lonely. Although the online Forums are a great source of support, resources and knowledge, we wanted to meet up with other parents face to face.

We wanted to share our experiences and help and support other parents either on the beginning of the journey or parents who already had children with a Diagnosis. I enlisted the help of my friend Heather Williams who I had met on one of the forums and she kindly set up the Facebook Group for us. We had our first meeting on Wednesday 6th May in Newark. A few parents who had expressed an interest were unable to make the first meeting but hopefully will be able to attend the next one. Emma and I had both put files of information together for help and support in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

A month later we had our next meeting and 8 members

attended.Hopefully when we have

enough members attending we can book a regular venue and in future have an evening meeting for parents who cannot attend during the day.

Anyone from Lincolnshire

wishing to join the group can: Request to join the FB Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1435894603372888/ or contact: Jackie Richardson email: [email protected] mobile: 07584 240386.

TWO August-September 2015 THREE August-September 2015 FOUR August-September 2015

Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) – Adult Care have recently released information relating to a public consultation regarding proposals to amend the Non-Residential Care Contributions Policy.

LCC has been looking at the Non-Residential Adults Contributions Policy to see if changes need to be made to bring it up to date and make it easier to understand. The proposed changes are being put to public consultation (between now and 14 September 2015) before the council makes any decisions. However you are affected, whether you currently receive care and support,

care for someone else or will in the future, your views will be important in shaping the future policy.

There are opportunities to get involved in a series of public meetings at varying times and venues across the County and or via an online questionnaire.

Dementia Project

Tell your Support Worker/Trusted Assessor (who did your Carers Assessment), if you have a change in circumstances. They

will need your full details. ”“

This means considering changes to make contributions and expenses fairer, while exploring opportunities to generate income to make Adult Care services sustainable for the future population, under growing budget pressures.

For further details/queries about the proposals, engagement events and how to respond to the consultation visit LCC web site via the link www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/adultcare

If you prefer to receive copies of documents by post, require an easy read version of the consultation document or if you have any questions about the consultation process, contact the Contributions Policy Consultation helpline on: 01522 782486
