President’s Message:

Well another Alaska Territorial Shoot and State Rendezvous are in the books. The vice president and I would thank all that participated in one or both. The Monthly Meeting of McKinley Mountainmen was called to order by President Rob Bargewell 7:30pm at 2015 State Rendezvous, Ft. Wick Alaska. There were 16 MMMLRC members present with 1 more joining before the meeting ended, totaling 17. • MMMLRC Bank Balance as of 11 July 2015 is $4,141.62 (with $180 yet to be deposited yet) • Bob Lochman motioned the Treasurer’s Report be accepted as given and Jeff Binegar seconded. The motion carried.

Shoot Reports:

• Pat Reed reported on the June Rifle shoot where 6 members shot June 20th at Mat Valley Sportsman Range. (Martin Killough, Pat Reed, Brad Bowman, Jeff Binegar, Bear Kelsey, and Calvin Pope) As Pat projected last month, the NMLRA Charter Club Team Shoot was shot by all, however only scores from Pat Reed, Jeff Binegar, Bear Kelsey, and Calvin Pope were sent to Friendship, IN as the NMLRA Charter Club entry. The shooters broke for a 20 minute lunch from McDonalds and continued Charter Club Shoot on into the afternoon. There was no smooth bore shoot after due to length of mail-in Charter Club Shoot format. • The Kelly/Reed Pistol Shoot was scheduled for outside at MVS Range, Tuesday July 14th, 2015. Due to so many attendees’ participating in the Territorial Shoot July 9-12 and State Rendezvous July 12-19, there were not enough shooters present to hold the July Pistol shoot.

Old Business:

• Keith Bayha states he has made a mistake in his Bio’s in that Steve and Kathy Waggoner are listed as Booshways for the 2017 State Rendezvous instead of the Memorial Weekend Rendezvous of 2016. He said he has the 2nd edition of his Bio Book with additional Bios and amendments to the originals in the 1st edition. He has six copies of the 2nd edition of the Alaska Muzzle Loaders Bios with him for sale @ $60 each. He soon will be sending the additions and amendments to the original purchasers of the 1st edition at no charge as was stated when they bought it.

New Business:

• Kathy Waggoner stated Steve’s and her name was erroneously listed in Keith Bayha’s Bio Book as Booshways for State Rendezvous 2017. In fact, they had volunteered for Memorial Weekend Rendezvous 2016. She allowed if someone would take over Memorial Weekend Rendezvous, she would indeed volunteer for the Booshway of the 2017 State Rendezvous. Since Russ Beauvais had previously left word he would assist any where he was needed. It was decided Russ would Booshway Memorial Weekend 2016 and Kathy Waggoner and Rockie Phillips Co-Booshway the State in 2017. • Tim Pauloski brought up the fact that with the amount of people attending rendezvous, and since the individual camps at Ft. Wick Rendezvous were moving closer to the range away from the east end, the outhouse situation needed improvement. More people were using the mid-camp outhouse instead of the two on the east end causing a smelly, unsanitary condition. He proposed we build another mid-camp outhouse. Also, one of the seats in one of the east end outhouse’s was soft and liable to break so it needed replaced. Booshway, Rob Bargewell, suggested we use some of the Booshway Fund to build another outhouse and fix the current ones. • Keith Bayha reported there were 27 or 28 paid shooters at the NMLRA territorial Shoot at Upper Susitna Shooting Range last week. Jeff “Beans” Binegar shot the most Aggregates with 11 (one short of the record he shot last year of 12). There were a total of 31 shooters however there were 4 or 5 youth shooters who only pay $1.50 for all youth aggregates. There were enough shooters for ASMLA to consider the shoot viable, or not losing money. However, the range has a different opinion as they started to charge all shooters $10 per day to use the range for the 4 days. After talking to the range president, the range fee was reduced to$10 for all four days. Seems the range officers will take this subject of range fees up at their next meeting Friday July 17th. • Attendance at the Territorial Annual Burgerfest was much larger than usual due to the close proximity of location and dates between Territorial and State Rendezvous. Calvin Pope reported a total 55 people, both Territorial shooters and Rendezvousers, ate and socialized all Saturday evening and into the night. Many from Fairbanks had never attended the Burgerfest before.

Page 3: August 2015 McKinley Mountain Schedule of Upcoming Events newsletters... · Kindergarten (5 yrs) to High School (15-18 yrs). Their theme for camp this year is 1800’s rendezvousing

• Keith Mathis told of Curtis Patteson contacting him on the 7th July about representatives from our club attending their Christian Summer camp located near Palmer AK. They would like instructors for black powder shooting, tomahawk and knife throwing, trapping, and hide tanning. There will be approximately 35 youths there aged from Kindergarten (5 yrs) to High School (15-18 yrs). Their theme for camp this year is 1800’s rendezvousing. Trail Life USA is a Christian Scouting-like organization for boys that is "interdenominational with Charter partners representing Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox faith traditions", a Christian version of the Boy Scouts. Ed Wick motioned the club support the Trail Life USA Rendezvous and Tim Pauloski seconded the motion. Motion carried by yea vs nay vote! Bear Kelsey volunteered to be POC for the event since his church sponsored a Trail Life venture and he was familiar with it. Club volunteers for instructor’s need to talk to “Bear” Kelsey to schedule participation in the even August 4th thru August 8th. • Mary Mathis wanted a show of hands of people committed to attending the McKinley Mountainman presentation at the Deltana Fair July 31st - August 2nd. Raising their hands were Tim Wood, Ed Wick, Bob Lochman, Keith & Mary Mathis, and Jeff Binegar. Pat Reed, JD Biggs and Mary Summersill, and Jim Anderson were maybes. Tim Pauloski and Keith Bayha were negatives as they could not attend. Non McKinley Mountainmen Steve Waggoner and Rockie Phillips have said they would probably attend and set up camps raising the count 6 or 7 camps with possibility of 2 or 3 more. 8 to 10 camps would be a sufficient number for our presentation. Each camp was to consider a primitive craft to demonstrate in their camp to the fair goers. • Controversy arose on the benefit of scheduling State Rendezvous simultaneously with the NMLRA Territorial Shoot. The purpose of this scheduling was to draw more people to participate in State Rendezvous. General consensus was there was no benefit and was hard on the shooters at Territorial because of transportation and storage of guns and shooting supplies for both events. Many shooters use 10 or more guns at the Territorial shoot whereas most only use 2 or 3 at State Rendezvous. Overall there seems to be more detriment to the back to back events than benefit • Rob Bargewell mentioned that Tim Pauloski and he, Boohsways for Memorial Weekend and State 2015 respectively, had worked together setting up activities and the camp of both 2015 Rendezvous. In many ways, that had reduced the costs and improved accommodations for both Rendezvous’. He suggested future Boohsways work together in this way to benefit each other, particularly if the Rendezvous were to be held at the same location. i.e. Ft. Wick.

Good of the Order:

• Keith Mathis reported that Harry Kadel had notified him that Teague Crawford died and his Memorial was July 7th in Anchorage. Harry and Janis Kadel, Keith Bayha, and Pat Reed attended. Teague Crawford, 44 yrs., was the son of Tim Crawford. Tim was the President of McKinley Mountainmen in 1979. Teague attended MMMLRA meetings and functions with his dad throughout his teen years. Teague was a businessman who worked and lived in Anchorage. Teague’s father, Tim, was a longtime member of McKinley Mountainmen throughout all of the 80’s and 90’s. He originally organized Alaska State Muzzle Loaders Association in 1992, and was the Alaska Representative of ASMLA. He also published the ASMLA Newsletter for many years until Keith Bayha took over in 1995. Teague lived and worked in Anchorage however Tim had moved to Arch Cape Oregon in 2002. Tim Crawford is currently 75 years old and still lives in Oregon. It was disappointing to our members attending that he was unable to attend his son’s Memorial in Anchorage. Tim has a “Bio” in Keith Bayha’s “Bio Sketches” Book for those who did not know him and are interested.

Meeting Adjournment:

• Calvin Pope motioned to adjourn the meeting and Bob Lochman seconded. A unanimous “yea” vote adjourned the meeting at 8:15 pm.

Split-the-Pot:

• There was no split-the-pot drawing due to having the meeting in the field at State Rendezvous instead of the basement of the VFW in Eagle River.

Other Information:

• With the addition of John Elmore, Charles Peters, Mike Deland, JD Biggs and Mary Summersill it brings MMMLRC membership to 68 people. We still have 14 memberships from last year with 21 people who have not renewed their membership. Dean and Earlene Bean from Delta Jct. AK joined and have renewed each year at the Deltana Fair and I do not consider them overdue until the fair time again this year. The other twelve memberships should take notice of their delinquency. This newsletter is for current or prospective members and won’t continue for those who do not renew membership.• Mike Kelly reported 2015 NMLRA Territorial Black Powder Shoot was held at Upper Susitna Shooting Range July 9th-12th. 28 adult/youths shot aggregates for State and National ranking. Results will be posted next month for State and the National ranking after compilation of all Territorials nationwide by NMLRA in Friendship Indiana.• Janet Bargewell had a couple of requests to put the recipe for the Apple Butter the kids made at Rendezvous in the newsletter; Enjoy, Janet “Jangles” Bargewell

4 lbs apples (stemmed, quartered, chopped) 2 cups Cider Sugar

3 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

Cook apples in cider or water until soft. Strain pulp. To each cup of pulp add 1/2 cup sugar. Stir in remaining ingredients. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture sheets from spoon. Pour into hot sterilized jars; store in cool dry place; the recipe makes about 10 6-oz glasses. The above directions came from my cook book. However I am known for not following directions well. While packing for rendezvous I forgot to bring the cooking directions and some of the utensils I needed, so I threw all ingredients into the same pot at the same time. We added 2 cups sugar although the amount of sugar required may vary with your apples and taste. We allowed our butter to cook at a fairly high head for approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hrs. stirring frequently.

• The 2015 State Rendezvous was a complete success. 53 traditional campers of the era 1840 and before attended in 18 primitive camps. The participants voted Steve and Kathy Waggoner’s camp as the most period accurate primitive camp, and Janet “Jangles” Bargewell with the most period accurate primitive clothing. 31 people visited or day camped to make the total attendance over 80!
