The Place Where Seniors Congregate

Hours: Monday - Friday, 9 am—2 pm

Manager’s Corner

Where has our summer gone? It’s time for our grands to go back to school. I hope all our members had some “grands” time with their kiddos this sum-mer. I enjoyed my time with one of ours just recent-ly. Pretty soon, he’ll be as tall as his mom.

July was busy around the Center. We played Jeop-ardy and learned about the 1862 Raid on Newburgh by Stovepipe Johnson and his Rebel marauders. We had a luau and started our Bridge and Euchre clubs. There has been some interest shown in playing pi-nochle. If you are interested, call the Center. Some-one else mentioned Scrabble. We are a flexible bunch around here and we welcome new members. We’ll find you something fun to do here. Promise. We’re playing Euchre on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and Bridge, alternate Tuesdays (Check our calendar for the schedule.) at 11 a.m. and Clabber every Monday at noon. For these clubs, you need to know how to play the game. If you would like to learn to play, please read the article on the inside. We are looking forward to another great Porkapa-looza in September. The pre-order forms will be available soon. We’ll let the media know when or-dering opens. Celebrity chefs are being recruited for the August 24 Celebrity Chefs Gone “Hog Wild” contest. I’m drooling just thinking about it. You can get more information from Colleen Martin’s article inside the newsletter. Colleen has recruited a great group of Celebrity Chefs. We invite all our members to come in for a “taste of Newburgh” during the competition. There, of course, will be pork but we are hoping to get a smorgasbord variety of dishes prepared by the chefs for our culinary delights.

AARP looking for tax

season volunteers

You don’t need to be an accountant to help other sen-iors with their taxes. Dale Oberbeck says they need volunteers to greet clients, open mail and answer phones, as well as experienced tax preparers. He will be at the Center on August 11, at noon to pre-sent a program on different ways you can volunteer to help seniors get their taxes done correctly and on time.

Thanks to our

Wednesday

lunch providers

Thanks to our Wednesday lunch providers in July. Gail Moran brought us delicious Johnnie Marzetti and John and Chris Smith grilled burgers out back for a great picnic. Colleen Martin provided pulled pork for our luau.

Horns aplenty

Hadi Shrine Brass Band coming

to play at Newburgh Senior Center

There’s nothing like a brass band to make your hands itch to clap and tempt your toes to tap. With 15 trumpets, trombones, tubas and other brass

instruments, the Hadi Shrine Brass Band is set to light up the air at Newburgh Senior Center on Mon-

day, August 31. A pitch-in dinner will kick off the evening at 5 p.m. and the concert will begin at 6 p.m.

The concert will last about an hour, so everybody who needs to be home before dark can get there. The concert is free; howev-er the usual tip jar will be available to show appreciation.

The band members will share sto-ries and answer questions as part

of the concert. It should be an enjoyable evening

for all and we hope you will let your friends and neighbors know about it so they can participate.

The Center will provide the meat entre for the pitch in dinner and everyone else should bring a side dish to share with others.

Special programs

planned at NSC

We try to provide a variety of programs to keep all our mem-bers interested. Some pro-grams are entertaining and some are educational. With luck, most are both. On August 4, 11:45 a.m., we’ll be having a program on foot care by the Indiana Foot and Ankle Clinic on Peachwood in Newburgh. On August 5, noon, the New-burgh Police Department Ca-nine Unit will visit and talk about that program, along with teaching safety tips for Seniors. Carolyn Schmidt will be here on August 20, 11:45 a.m. to talk with us about nutrition. Cards with Jane is going back to meeting at noon, in August on the 21st. And on August 28, Vicki Seibe will present a program on cop-ing with Sjorgens Syndrome. We hope you look forward to these special programs and will invite others to participate. Clabber meets on Mondays, Euchre on Wednesdays and Bridge on alternate Tuesdays.

AARP Experience Corps is looking for classroom tutors to help two or three days a week in the EVSC, starting September 14. Training for volunteer tutors starts August 3, but other arrange-ments may be made if this is not convenient. Call 812-402-3170 to set up an appointment .

Volunteers are asked to spend 30 hours in the classroom each month. There is a small stipend. Ms. Outlaw and Mrs. Taylor are leading the program for EVSC.

August 13 is sponsored by Bill and Carol Woerz in loving memory of Jim and Virginia Bennet, on what would have been their wedding anniversary. Thank you, Bill and Carol, for including the Center in this sweet memory of Carol’s parents August 29 means Happy Birthday to Jan Larson. Jan’s husband, Blake Larson, is an NSC board mem-ber. We thank Jan and Blake for being active support-ers of the Center and many other organizations in

Newburgh. Happy Birthday, Jan! If you would like to be a day sponsor to celebrate the special days in your life or to remember those who are dear to you, please call the Center.
