Many thanks Sarah We are very grateful to Sarah Holmes for carrying out the role of Points Secretary in Season 1, and to Ray and Eleanor Lambley for taking it on for Season 2 as Sarah is unable to continue. Best wishes for fast recovery Our best wishes go out to Sue Neil and Kathy Hodder, both of whom had unfortunate falls on the court during the semi-finals in Season 1. We understand both are on the road to recovery and hope they return to good health as soon as possible. Our special thoughts also go out to Committee Member Angela Bartlett, who has recently undergone cancer surgery. We hope and pray that she, too, is well on the way to recovery and will be back on court in the near future. More players welcome Our competition has just survived to continue in Season 2, with just four teams in each of the two sections. We believe we can still have a competitive and enjoyable season. However, as numbers have continued to drop over recent years, we are forced to look at other options. We are gathering details of the Tennis Brisbane Wednesday Ladies competition, and will pass those on to all players early in this season, and then seek feedback. Repairs cause confusion It was unfortunate that confusion about court usage occurred on our first day of fixtures. This was because courts 7 and 8 were still being repaired, and in the process, damage was caused to court 9. Court 9 still has some issues but courts 7 and 8 are now fully playable. Like Courts 2 and 3, the new surfaces are a little slower than some players would prefer but this will change as they settle and “wear in”. Pay and play This season we have commenced the new court payment scheme whereby every player pays every time she plays, ie $9 each. This is a simpler system and brings us into line with all other RLTA fixture competitions. Scorecards and balls are provided by the Club, and used balls should be returned to the cupboard in the Clubhouse after play. Completed scorecards are to be placed in the green box on the Clubhouse wall as usual, or handed to the Points Secretary.

Kym, Mary and Angela.

New players Welcome to the players who have joined us in season 2 and also to returning players. We hope you enjoy the WML tennis competition. On the ball with Wilson Most of you are aware that because of a contract with Wilson, the Pro Shop is supplying Wilson balls for our fixtures. While some people prefer other brands, we would ask that players refrain from complaints for now, and at the end of the season the Pro Shop will welcome feedback. In jury during match From time to time, we have had instances where a player has been injured during play on a Wednesday. The team involved has forfeited. The Committee has decided that, beginning season two, if this occurs, the team may use one of its other players (either already playing or spare) to complete the day’s play without penalty. We have run this by the RLTA Committee who supports this decision. (It should be a rare occurrence.) New urn Have you noticed the new hot water urn? The previous one ‘died’ after ten years, and thanks to Yvonne’s fundraising efforts and your support of the raffles, a new one was installed straight away. Support championships All players are encouraged to participate in the Club Championships which will be held from 22-25 September (first week of school holidays). There are four sections – A, B, C and over 55. Ladies Doubles will be on Wednesday evening, 23 September, and the Mixed Doubles on Thursday evening, 24 September. Let’s see if we can get some pairings organized to make the competition more interesting. ‘The more, the merrier!’

Rules and Etiquette of Tennis In this section of the newsletter, we hope to define and perhaps clarify some of the general rules and etiquette of tennis matches. If there is a point that you would like discussed or clarified, please let us know. Reaching over the Net Q: Can a player reach over the net to hit a

ball? A: Only in certain circumstances. A player

loses the point if she hits the ball before it has passed the net. A player's racquet may pass over the net after hitting the ball on her own side of the net. But, if the ball in play has hit the ground and then spun or been blown back over the net, the player may reach over the net to hit the ball.

In any circumstance, a player loses the point if she or her racquet or anything she is wearing or carrying touches the net while the ball is in play. Short deuces: how they work Short deuce means that there are no more than two deuces in any game. When the score reaches deuce, play the next two points as usual; that is, if one team wins both points then that team wins the game. However, if each team wins one point, the ensuing deuce is shortened to one point, so that point is game point. The receiving team decides which player will receive the serve.

How to build your tennis strength We are very fortunate to have Andy Jeffery ( left) from AJ CrossFit & Personal Training at Cleveland and Carina assisting with our art ic les on exercises. Andy has years of experience as a fi tness coach and has kindly offered his expert ise to us. Visit the website to learn more: www.ajcrossfit .com.au Specific exercises can be used by any tennis player to enhance performance and power and prevent injury. In previous newsletters the importance of warming-up prior to playing and cooling-down afterwards (see December 2014 and March 2015 newsletters) were discussed. In this edition, we feature more exercises for you to add to your warm-up. Visit this YouTube link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b7Ef3LNYBM) for a full warm-up video with more detailed instructions from Andy. These two stretches are designed to increase hip flexibility. With repeated, continuous use of these exercises, flexibility of all muscle groups near the hips will increase. This will contribute to speed and strength and very importantly assist in injury prevention. Ensure you read through the description and understand what is required and how it is to be executed. Obviously, you know your body’s capacity so choose to do only exercises within

Spiderman Stretch Benefits: stretches groin and adductor, the small muscles inside the tops of your legs all the way down to the thighs. Increases flexibility when muscles need to work at fast speeds. Technique: start on your hands and toes, tighten abs; lift left foot and bring it towards your left hand. (Beginners should go halfway between the arm and the waist and as mobility increases, move foot closer to hand.) The right leg stays extended behind you. Your arms and left leg should be in alignment. Hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds and change to the other side. Repeat 2-3 times

Yesteryear’s handy hint

From Bonnie Simpson, Pink Divas. Here is my recipe for the newsletter. It comes straight from the Thermomix Community Recipe Website but could easily be made in a food processor. Chia, Date & Walnut Sl ice Prep 1m · Cook 2h · Makes 24 portion(s) · Source: Recipecommunity.com.au Ingredients

• 170 grams oats • 100 grams walnuts • 40 grams Shredded coconut, or desiccated • 45 grams chia seeds • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 tablespoon cocoa • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 430 grams pitted dates • 50 grams coconut oil

Direct ions 1. Add slightly warmed coconut oil to bowl of food processor. If using a Thermomix, 80°C for 1 minute. 2. Add all other ingredients except dates and blitz for 20 seconds. 3. Add dates and blitz for another 20 seconds. (Thermomix speed 8 for 20 seconds) 4. Pour mix into a slice tin and press down with your hand and the back of a spoon. 5. Place in fridge for a couple of hours to set. 6. Cut into slices and serve dusted with icing sugar.

This helpful hint comes from 'The CWA cookery book and household hints' "To make a feather pillow: If you want a feather pillow, try this way: Make your pillow covering from a good strong ticking - linen for preference. Rub the inside well with common household soap, and turn to the right side. Each time you pluck poultry (and of course you will scald before plucking ) put your fine breast feathers into a paper bag and hang out in the sun to dry. When dry, pop them into your pillow case and secure the top with a safety pin. Cover your case with an old pillow slip to keep it clean and hang up anywhere out of the way. You will be surprised just how soon your pillow will be ready for sewing up. Of course, if time permits you can strip your pin feathers and use also. If you put them at each plucking into a paper bag it is a nice wet day job for the children, and a good lesson for them as well." (Or buy one at PillowTalk!)
