Greetings Nobles and Ladies,

Membership is really getting it done so far this year. On June 17th some of the members of the Ritualistic Team went down to Austin

for a mini-ceremonial. The ceremonial may not have been the full blown version, but the quantity of new Shriners was spectacular! We brought in 11 new Shriners. This is just one shy of what we brought in for the May 2nd Ceremonial! Keep it up, and make the second half of this year just as good or better!! Some of these new members just became Masons at the One-Day-to-Masonry that was held in Rochester on June 13th. See the back inside page of the July Osman to put a face to the name of these new Shriners and please give them a warm welcome the next time you see them. A special thank you to Bruce Thomas and the Austin area Shriners for coordinating this event.

The Osman Representatives were in sunny, hot and humid Houston, Texas for the 141st Imperial Session July 5th-9th. On the fun side, we all met our counter parts from Abou Saad Shriners, Panama. They are interested in us doing, sometime in the next two years, a ceremonial and

re-dedication of the Osman plaque in the Panama Canal. Osman was instrumental in the formation of Abou Saad Shriners and the original dedication was done in 1913. On the business side, Illustrious Sir Jerry Gantt was voted in as the new Imperial Potentate of Shriners International and Past Imperial Potentate Dale Stauss won the election for Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Hospital. Some new legislation was voted on and approved. This included a $15 increase in the per capita fee. The last time the per capita fee was increased was in 2003.

The Midwest Shrine Association Convention is fast approaching, August 12th-15th. This year it will be in Fargo, ND with El Zagel being the host Temple. We will have a huge contingency there; all 60 rooms that were set aside for us have been booked! The last time El Zagel was the host was actually the first MSA Lady Julie and I attended. It is funny how it worked out that the year I am Potentate it has come full circle, considering we added two Temples to our Association since I have been on the Divan. I am looking forward to attending as it is always a good time. I hope all that were interested in coming were able to get a room.

A couple functions happened in July/early August after the deadline for this

publication (Wine Tasting, Family Picnic), so I will comment on them in next month’s article. In the mean time, plan on coming to our third Community event, an Ice Cream Social, which will be held on Sunday, August 23rd, 1-4 PM. In addition to enjoying ice cream from Peterson Popcorn and Ice Cream and cookies from Great American Cookies, we will have special entertainment at 2 pm: The Magic of Patrick Wallace. His close up, mentalism and illusions will delight and entertain the whole family. There may even be a special guest (Mrs. Minnesota) cut in half!

Be sure to mark your calendars for the Potentate’s Shindig coming up on Saturday, September 26th. It is time to get your boots, belt buckles and hats out of the closet and dusted off! Stay tuned for more information coming your way.

The Chief’s CornerWe are halfway

through parade season, time is flying by!!

The Temple parade in Lakeville stood up to tradition and was HOT and well attended.

Thank you to all who participated, it sure was nice to see the Dragon Patrol from Rochester as well as the T-Birds from Mankato. White Bear Avenue was also a good turnout, but always seems to feel like it is the start of the end of summer.

MSA in Fargo, ND is right around the corner. Registration begins on Thursday at 9 at the Ramada Plaza Suites. The parades are going to be held on Thursday night, in the Downtown/Broadway area (there is a map on the MSA web page), with a Welcome Oasis following at the fairgrounds. Step off will be at 6:30. The Parade on Saturday is in Dillworth, MN - no step off or Send off Oasis details have been provided by El Zagal as of yet. Either check with me for details once you are at MSA, or if I hear prior to MSA it will be sent out in a Parade Blast. ALL Competitions will be held on Friday at the Red River County Fairgrounds. Get those motorized vehicles all polished up and uniforms crisp, and let’s show them what Osman can do!! Please check www.msa2015.org for additional information on all events for that weekend.

Parades are as listed below. Oasis details will be in the Parade Blast if not included here.

• Shakopee** – Derby Days - THIS IS NEW – Sunday, August 2nd, Step

off is 1:00 - watch your Parade Blast for additional information.

• MSA – Fargo, ND – Thursday – Saturday, August 13th – 15th. Parade info as known shown above

• Burnsville – Fire Muster** – Saturday, September 12th – step off is 11:00 AM

• Northfield – Defeat of Jesse James** - Parade Sunday, September 13th - step off is at 2:00 PM

• River Falls – East West Shrine Game/Parade – Saturday, October 3rd. No other information available yet.

There is still a possibility that we may participate in one of the daily State Fair Parades. This would be great exposure not only for Osman Shrine, but for our Circus as well since it is held at the Fair Grounds. The application has been submitted and we are waiting to hear if we’ve been accepted or not.

And as a reminder, if your Lady or Children wish to ride in the parade, it must be in one of the vehicles that are not doing performances during the parade AND you must have the Potentate’s WRITTEN permission PRIOR to the parade and have that with you.

In order to participate in any parade, your dues MUST be current.

Last but certainly not least are a few upcoming dates to add to your calendars:

• Osman Family Picnic - Prior Lake - August 1st

• Osman Ice Cream Social – Lost Spur – August 23rd

• Potentate’s Shin Dig – Saturday –

September 26th

• Ladies Appreciation Brunch – Sunday – October 4th

Please be sure to check either the Calendar here in the Osman for additional dates and details, or the web page...OR download the calendar to your mobile device and always be in the know!!

If your unit is not participating in a parade on a particular weekend, please consider attending a parade and helping out another unit. Your help and support will always be welcome.

A personal thank you to the Rochester Dragon Patrol for a very memorial 4th of July that I will never forget, but I will be back to help as I can for a parade or two.

It’s the smiles on the faces of kids of all ages that make’s doing our Parades so worthwhile! See you on the streets!!

Legion of HonorGreetings All Osman

Nobles and Ladies

Parade season continues to roll on! Although it has been a little “toasty” out there, we have not been rained on yet….not

even in South St Paul.

We have had excellent turn out at all of our parades. Thank you to all of you for stepping up and making the LOH look great coming down the street.

Our summer outing was held at the 7th St. Social and we enjoyed a great dinner with the Ladies and a good time was had by all.

By the time you are reading this, we will have marched in the White Bear Avenue parade and hopefully Shakopee. It is always exciting to be in a new town! The Osman family picnic – was a great day of family fun and good times.

I also want to thank Jim Smeby for

installing a new winch on our jeep trailer. There is going to come a time when it stalls going up the ramps and will not start. So instead of looking at each other, we can just push a button!! Also, a big “thank you” to Jim and Jan Moore for opening their home to us before we marched the Lakeville Parade.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the streets…are doing what we do best

to make a difference!

If you are a new Noble to Osman and are proud to carry the flag of our Nation, we would like to talk to you. You do not need to be a veteran to join. Please feel free to contact me or any other member of the Legion of Honor.

Have a great month! Commander,

Todd Swedberg

Summer greetings from the Mankato T-Birds/T-Buckets and the Mankato Area Shrine Club! Hope your summer is going well and you are staying cool with the recent heat wave!! The T-Birds/T-Buckets have been BUSY this summer. By the time you read this we will have completed 12 parades just in the month of July including three on the Fourth of July! Things will start to slow down a little for August and September, but there is still much fun to be had. Ted Hoogenraad secured us in a couple more parades, and we are also going to be participating in several of the Temple Parades and attending the MSA as well. We are really looking forward to that!

The reception from folks on the streets to not only the T-Birds, but also to the new T-Buckets, has been nothing short of amazing! The smiles on the faces of kids and adults alike are all we need to remind us why we keep so busy with parades every summer. There is a lot of work that goes into each parade, both before and after the parade. We have to make sure all the cars are working properly, get them loaded on the trailer, get to the parade, get cars unloaded, flags on, get through the parade (hopefully not having to make any repairs during the parade) and get the cars reloaded back onto the trailer. For anyone who has helped out with any of this, thank you…we couldn’t do it alone!

And it’s especially helpful on days where we have 2 and 3 parades the same day.

Thanks to the generous support of Osman, the T-Birds acquired a new enclosed trailer this month to transport our cars to parades and securely store them out of the elements. Our resident mechanic, Eric Mundt has big plans for the trailer including covering the outside of the trailer with our famous Osman bling and adding such amenities as an air conditioner. A very big thank you to Dick Schubbe and Lee Overmoen, as they drove to Nashville to pick up the new trailer and bring it back to Mankato. And a thank you to Eric Mundt as well, for allowing Dick and Lee to drive his truck to pick up the trailer. The trailer will be customized and lettered in the weeks to come!

By the time you are reading this article, we will be getting ready to head to Fargo, ND for MSA. Our trusty mechanic Eric has built our third T-Bucket, and we are so excited to be able to compete! Ill. Sir Jeff Olsen and our own Steve Igou took home First Prize last year for the Obstacle Course, and we’re looking forward to doing it again! Bring your brooms because the T-Birds are going to sweep!

On a special note, the T-Birds/T-Buckets and Mankato Area Shrine Club are proud to celebrate Osman’s 130th Anniversary! The Mankato T-Birds and

Mankato Shrine Club have a proud and rich history with Osman. We salute the hard work of members like Clarence Johnson who has been part of the T-Birds for over 34 years. Without the foundation built by members like Clarence, and our many other members over the years, we would not be where we are today. We also salute the hard work of members like Eric Mundt, and Steve Igou, who both have been bringing our club into the future by modernizing the T-Birds to make them run better and safer to building the T-Buckets which are dazzling crowds at every parade. Our Potentate’s theme this year is Nostalgic Inspiration. The T-Birds/T-Buckets are turning that theme into reality as we combine our world famous and “new and improved” T-Birds with the T-Buckets to entertain spectators of all ages at the parades. With all of the hard work and excitement that’s going on in the T-Birds/T-Buckets, I am confident that our club will thrive for many years to come.

Keep Crusin!

Greetings Nobles and Ladies,

August is here, and a successful parade season is winding down. Coming up is the MSA in Fargo, and currently we have 5 members of

the Director’s Staff planning to attend. We will be putting on a Camel Herder’s Degree and as always could use help with the degree.

The Director’s Staff picnic was held at our warehouse and attended

by about 40 people. The menu included boasted chicken, potato salad, watermelon, and all the trimmings--plus liquid refreshments. There was also a drawing for some nice door prizes. There was cake for dessert and to help us celebrate Clare Law’s 97th birthday, Happy Birthday, Clare.

We recently welcomed 2 new Nobles to the Director’s Staff. They are Noble Glen Anderson and his wife, Lady Barb, and Noble George Carlson and his wife, Lady Arlene. Welcome aboard Nobles.

Keep Gene Dunn and his family in your thoughts and prayers as he is still going thru cancer treatments.

Marv Edelstein is living at Golden Living Center in Hopkins. He always enjoys having visitors.

Our next dinner meeting will be at Joseph’s on Tuesday, Sept. 15th at 6:00 PM.

Keep on rollin’ with the Director’s Staff,

With the parade season in full swing along with other events the past 4-6 weeks have been busy. One of the high lights of the summer is most certainly the Ceremonial

that was held at the Masonic Lodge in Austin on June 17th. Eleven new Nobles were brought into Shrine. In spite of the heavy rain that dropped several inches on us in a short time, it was a great evening. Congratulations to the new Nobles.

Parades in July included Albert Lea, followed by an Oasis hosted by the Albert Lea Shrine Club, Austin and Blooming Prairie on July 4th, with an Oasis at the Blooming Prairie Gun Club with Shrine Units from Austin, Albert Lea, Owatonna, and Rochester attending. A very large thank you to Noble Brad Stout and Bonnie Newell for organizing a very good Oasis. We also had special help from ladies Mary

Hanson, Helen Hecimovich, and Karen Luna. We estimated close to 100 Nobles and Ladies attended this Oasis.

Parades continued with the band being at North Mankato and New Richland on July 11, and then had a break until July 25-26 with parades at Madison Lake, Truman and Montgomery. August parades will see us at Lanesboro (Aug.2), Chatfield (Aug.8), Kenyon (Aug. 22), Goodview (Aug. 23), and St. Charles (Aug. 30). The parade season will wrap up with Mantorville on Sept. 13th.

Sandwiched between the parades was the All-Masonic Picnic held on Sunday July 12 at East Side Lake in Austin. If there are Nobles in

the area who have not joined a unit, we would love to get them involved with our unit. Participate when you can, there is a lot of fellowship, and we do have fun.

Next meeting is: Sat. Sept. 12 at the Conservation Club North of Town on Hwy 218, This will be our end of parade season get-to-gether.

Rochester ZagalasThere has been a lot

of Parading going on this month with record participation though out Osman. A big thank you to Osman’s Illustrious Sir Jeff Olsen for taking the time out of his busy schedule

to come to Rochester, for the One Day to Masonry. Ill Sir Jeff congratulated two of our newest Masons, Gordon

Haubenschild and Dirk Drake. Hopefully we will see them both become part of Osman. We have had parades in Rochester, Elgin, Zumbrota and several other fun cities. (See Photo’s) Thank you to all that attend, and again a special thanks to Larry Notre for organizing all of the parades, but also having a great Oasis after Rochester Fest. What a great time. Thanks Larry. I have only a few of the photo’s from around the parades, but as you look at these note the big smiles

on the members of Zagalas, you can tell they all enjoy the opportunity to show off their vehicles. What a great group to be associated with. Thank you to all who make a difference in a child’s life.

To the World you may be one person, but to one child, you may be the World.

That’s all for this month.

Albert Lea Shrine Club and Albert Lea CarsGreetings, Nobles, Ladies and friends,

Our Vice President, Noble “Jake” Loper once again started our parades with a few words to our Higher Power. Thanks Noble Loper. The 4th of July week end was a busy one once again. We had an Oasis after the Albert Lea parade which was attended by many Nobles, their ladies and friends. And again the parade season is going by fast. I guess one could say we’re on the season wrap up. Why did the time go? We’re sure having fun with all those smiling faces. It seems to me that the crowd just lights up with smiles and laughter when they see those little red cars zooming around, not to mention the great feeling inside us Shriners are getting. Thank you parade goers and THANK YOU SHRINERS!

Greetings Nobles and Ladies,

While it’s been a busy summer and we’ve had several parades. We had a nice parade in Lake City where we were rained on at the end, only to have the sun come out for an awesome steak dinner oasis at Len Hislop’s home. Thank you Len! Parades included three on the 4th of July where Chang surpassed the 800th parade. We had a great oasis after the Blooming Prairie parade sponsored by the Albert Lea SC. We walked 8 grueling miles on the 4th, but it was a great payday for the hospital.

We are only half way through with our parade season. I encourage all able bodied nobles to keep attending parades and would like to see new faces if possible to make this season a positive and memorable one!!

By the time everyone reads this newsletter well have attended the 2015 MSA Fargo. I can’t wait to catch every noble and lady up on the adventures we all had, and new degrees.

The Rochester Area Shrine Club had their first Thursdays on First booth in Rochester where several dragon members were able to help out and explain what Shriners are.

Our next stated Dragon Patrol meeting is Augusts. 26th @ 7:00pm in the Clarion Inn Shrine Room

Mat-Sha Temple No. 62, Daughters of the NileGreetings from

Mat-Sha Temple No. 62. As you know our 2015 Supreme Session was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico from June 10 – 14. What an inspiring week. As most of you have heard, our very own Heather Krastins-Lambert was appointed as a Supreme Officer for 2015-2016 to Supreme Princess Zulieka (there are only 18 ladies who are Officers). Not only is this a great honor, but we have over 25,000+ members and Heather’s hard work, commitment, knowledge of the Order, kindness and intelligence got her noticed to be appointed to this position. She kept this a secret from us until she was announced. What a wonderful surprise.

Also Sara-Marie Malewitz received her first appointment as Supreme Goodwill Ambassador to the Central Area. Sara-Marie will represent the Supreme Temple by visiting other Temples; promote attendance to our Temple and to promote the philanthropic work of the Daughters of the Nile. Sara-Marie was chosen because of her leadership, thorough knowledge of the Order and is a respected member of our Temple. If you have not met her, she is the warmest, happy, kind and supporting person you have ever met. She was well chosen for this position and I know she will do a wonderful job. Sara-Marie was Queen of our Temple in 2013.

Gooch Krastins-McKinnon was appointed the Escort to the

Supreme Temple Banner Escort, and is planning on doing a lot of traveling with Heather this year, and Jane Larson was appointed to the Publications Committee.

This year we learned that the Daughters of the Nile Temples donated $2,391,597.81 to the Shriners Hospitals for Children® and gave $1,090,199.00 in donated items.

So how does Mat-Sha fit into all this? As a Temple we raise money not only for our general fund but we also give gifts of Stepping Stones in memory or in honor for our Temple members. The Stepping Stones cost $25.00 and the full amount goes to the Daughters of the Nile Foundation and in return we get a very attractive certificate for the person we are remembering or honoring. We also give a check to the Supreme Queen when she comes for the Official Visit which will be July 23th and 24th. We collect items for the Hospital. Over the years, we average on a yearly basis about $1,300.00, which includes toys, stuffed animals, crafts, batteries, books and gift cards. We also put in over 4,000 hours of volunteer work each year.

This year we have been asked by the Osman Women’s Auxiliary to collect School Supplies for their Back to School drive. Pr. Kim Beslin is heading this up. We will be collecting at the Official Visit, the Family Picnic on August 16 and our September Stated Session on September 19th. Even though I have listed these dates we will be collecting all year for school supplies,

toys, books and gift cards. I will give monthly updates and, in advance, thank you for the donations.

Mark your calendar for September 19-20 when we hold our Annual 20 hour Scrap and Craft event. It doesn’t matter if you scrap or craft, I work on my Stamp Collection and walk around to see what everyone else is doing. We have great laughs and drawings for some great items. Oh yeah we also eat, there will be a dinner, snacks, midnight snacks, desserts, treats, and breakfast. Everyone is welcome. Come for a while or stay the whole night. I promise you will have fun. Bring a sleeping bag and pillow in case you want to nap, but trust me it will be hard because you do not want to miss out on anything. Oh, did I mention the food…….. Yep!! You get all this for $25.00 from 2PM on September 19 till September 20th at 10:00 am. We have large tables to work on. Please contact Pr. Royal, Dawn R. Hurd at 651-308-7501 or Email at [email protected] I hope to see you all.

Take care and Nile love,Diane Anderson

Dear Auxiliary Members and Friends of the Auxiliary,

A number of us from the Twin Cities along with Divan members and their Ladies had the opportunity to attend the Alexandria Shrine Circus again this year. The day was absolutely gorgeous for the two outdoor shows. Thank you to the members of the Alexandria Shrine Club and their ladies for making us feel so welcome. Brion Golde, circus director, was kind enough to invite Linda Johnson and I as members of the Osman Womens Auxiliary Board, along with the Divan members to the center ring at the

beginning of the show and introduce us to the crowd. Thank you, Brion, for such a kind gesture. The Osman Womens Auxiliary really appreciates all the support we receive from the Alexandria Shrine Club.

Congratulation to Heather Krastins Lambert, Past Queen of Mat-Sha temple No. 62, and member of the Osman Womens Auxiliary on her appointment and installation as Supreme Princess Zulieka to the Supreme Temple, Daughters of the Nile. We are all very proud of Heather, and we know she will be a terrific representative for the state of Minnesota. The Osman Womens Auxiliary wishes you a fantastic year!

Our next Auxiliary event will be held September 12, at Oak Marsh Golf Course. This event will include a luncheon and a presentation by guest speaker, Marti Borgland, who will enlighten us about Minnesota produced special apples. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a quilt raffle at this event. Mark your calendar now; so, you don’t miss this enjoyable afternoon.

Welcome to the Womens General Auxiliary.

Sometimes it’s hard to understand the connection between the Osman Womens Auxiliary and the WGA. This overview and organizational chart, should give you a better idea of our organization and how we operate.

Charting the WGA family tree.

The WGA takes root.

Think of the Womens General Auxiliary (WGA) like a family tree, with branch extensions that grow, integrate and serve as support for the common good of Shriners Hospitals for Children-Twin Cities.

Created in 1922 by the Board of Governors, the WGA was organized a year later with a representative from each of the Osman and Zuhrah temples. In 1948, additional auxiliaries were organized under the jurisdiction of the WGA, which continued to add branches through the years. Today there are 32 auxiliaries in the Midwest states of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Iowa.

Each auxiliary runs independently with its own bylaws and officers. All fundraising monies and donations are sent the WGA to purchase the needs of patients and the hospital.

The auxiliaries in each state are guided an Advisory Board member that resolves any issues that may

arise in their assigned areas. There are 14 Advisory Board members who report yearly to the General Board, ensuring the WGA mission is fulfilled.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain our organization. If you have any questions, please call me at 651-455-6586. With your continued support we will remain strong in fulfilling our mission of serving the children at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Twin Cities.

When talking with prospective Master Masons about the possibility of becoming a Shriner, the question often comes up on how or when did you become a Shriner and this is a story I love to share.

When I was dating a young lady and thinking about asking her to marry me, I followed the proper procedures and asked her father Edward L. Lindquist for his daughter’s hand in marriage, and much to my surprise her father said NO, that I had to become a Master Mason first. With this in mind I said to myself, this ok my dad is a Mason and it’s something I probably would do some day, so ok I will do it. I petitioned for degree work at Prairie Lodge #123 in Blooming Prairie. I received my 1st degree on May 23,1972, 2nd degree October 10, 1972, and becoming a Master Mason November 14, 1972. Upon completing my degree work I asked for a second time and again the answer was NO, that I had to become a 32degree Mason first, so again I said ok as I knew this is something I would do someday so why not now, so with that in mind I proceeded into the next step of becoming 32 degree Master Mason.

I was soon to find myself to be a member of the Spring Reunion group in The Arthur Charles Brightman Class of 1973 receiving my Master of the Royal Secret of the 32 Degree of the

Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite at the Winona Consistory in the Valley of Winona April 7, 1973. Being proud at this moment and with my future in laws also attending the final ceremony, I once again asked for his daughters hand in marriage, and again I received the same answer, a NO! This time I was totally shocked, I thought I had done everything he had asked and he still said NO! I know that I really had the look of shock this time and bewilderment, but he smiled and said that I had to become a Osman Shriner first. This too, is something I knew I would probably do one day, so its another step in the ladder that I started.

I am very proud to say that I was lucky to have walked the Hot Sands (and at that time they were hot!) at the Lost Spur in St. Paul becoming an Osman Shriner on June 2, 1973. It was a great group of men that I went in with and a special day for me, as my dad Ray Bass who passed away in 2006 also became a Shriner that same day. But what I can still remember best to this day is that the first person to come and congratulate me was my father-in law to be, Edward L. Lindquist and with a hand shake and a twinkle in his eye, he said now you can marry my daughter!! As you might have guessed, he was a Mason himself. Ed, also belonged to Prairie Lodge #123 in Blooming Prairie and a Mason taking his first degree on March 25, 1958, 2nd degree on April 22, 1958 and became a Master Mason May 13, 1958, as well as becoming an Osman Shriner in May 1960, and he will be 92 years old on September 19 of this year.

With having the blessing of our families, and a ring on my bride to be hand, we then started to plan our wedding and picking the special date that we would say our “I do’s” I believe picking your very special date has always been an obstacle of a lot of couples.

As many of you may know the first Temple established in the United State was the Mecca Shriners in New York

City September 26, 1872 and that Osman Temple is celebrating its 130 Anniversary this year being established July 13, 1885. Keeping this in mind dates do fall into place.

At my last Doctor’s appointment, he asked me if I believed in the coincidence of numbers, (of coarse we were talking about lab results and numbers) but having said that I do. We have four wonderful children, (2 boys-2girls) and seven grandchildren. Our youngest son Tyler Bass also became a Master Mason on August 26, 2014 and belongs to Plymouth Lodge #160 and joined the Osman Shrine on December 9, 2014.

I do believe that it all started with my father-in law who with his strong Masonic belief, saw something in me that he knew that would make me become a stronger man and father with the same Masonic beliefs that he had and he wanted me to have the same opportunity’s that he did and to experience of a life time that many men don’t take, he let me belong to one of the greatest organizations in the world and by telling me NO the first time I asked for his daughter’s hand in marriage gave me the strengthen and determination to make a difference, I did not give up after the first NO, I did what I was asked and

still received a 2nd No, even a 3rd No, but when I finally accomplished what it took to become a 32 Degree Master Mason and a Shriner I would not be who I’m today, and for that I’m deeply grateful.

With looking back, everything works on dates and numbers, as you can see, my wife Sandy Kae’s birthday is on September 26, and we got married on July 13, 1974 two very important dates for Shriners in the United States

and Osman Temple. And with a very strong family heritage of being Masons, between myself, my father-in –law, my dad, and my son Tyler, we have 156 years of being Master Masons and 133 years of being Osman Shriners.

Having said all of this, I do belief in the faith of numbers and the strength of family, I truly believe in the old saying that “ 3rd time is the Charm”, because without my father in law saying No the first time I asked I would not me the man

nor the Mason or Shriners that I’m today.

I find myself keeping busy belonging to various Osman Units, I’m a member of the Austin Shrine Club, Austin Oriental Band, the Rochester Area Shrine Club, Rochester Dragon Patrol, Rochester Zagalas Car Club and a member of the Osman Membership Team besides belonging to Prairie Lodge #123 and Fidelity Lodge #39 in Austin.

Proud to be an Osman Shriner!

Austin Oriental BandThe Austin Oriental Band became an official Unit of

Osman Shrine in 1955. The Unit was sponsored by the Austin Area Shrine Club. The Band was the first out of city Unit of Osman Shrine.

As an organization the Unit seeks to help local institutions and needy charities such as the project for mentally retarded children in addition to their generous support of the Shriners Hospital for Children. The Oriental Band is probably one of the most colorful Units in the uniformed bodies. Extremely different and individual are the flowing bright colored satin capes and pantaloons, topped off with bearded faces. Professionally applied make-up changes the appearance of the Unit member to a point where you are not recognized, even by people who know you. The Band is a fun group and you don’t have to be a professional musician to play in the Oriental Band. The tom-tom or percussion end of the band has only two rhythmic beats easily learned, cymbals and bass the same, and musette horn has just seven finger notes and is easily mastered.

Mighty MitesThe Mighty Mites is one of Osman’s newest parade units based in St.

Paul. The vehicles are based on a go-cart frame and are powered by a small 2-cycle power plant. They are 36 inches in length and weigh about 45 pounds. What’s unique about the cars is that the rider sits on top of the vehicle instead of in it. The cars can be put in the trunk of a car and do not require a trailer.

We have three different fiberglass body styles available; a 1932 Ford Roadster, a 1936 Ford Cabriolet, and a NASCAR Cup Car. All of the cars will be burgundy metal-flake in color. Nobles will purchase the mini-cars and maintain them.

Director’s StaffThe Director’s Staff was chartered February 4, 1946. Previously known as the “Ring Masters” or “Wrecking Crew”, the sole

duty of the Director’s Staff was to produce the Second Section of the Ceremonial or initiation of new Shriners.

The Director’s Staff is now responsible for the operation, care, and maintenance of most of Osman Shrine’s vehicles and floats, and specialized equipment, much of which has been built by the Director’s Staff.

Each summer the Director’s Staff hosts a picnic for members and families. Meetings are held on the third Monday of the month except July and August. The Unit enjoys each other’s company while working for the welfare of Osman Shrine.

A Calliope is also under the Unit’s care and can always be seen a parades and special events that promote Osman Shrine in the local community. The Clown Unit was formed from the membership of the Director’s Staff. The Camel Herder’s degree was conceived in 1956 by members of the Director’s Staff and is given usually in connection with the Midwest Summer Session. Members from the Director’s Staff have served as Circus Directors and Circus Comptroller. The Unit also contributes a lot of time and hard work setting up stands and selling items at the Circus.

Legion of HonorThe Legion of Honor provides

a Color Guard for all Osman official parades and ceremonies. It also is an active social group and works at each circus in the important role of taking tickets.

Mankato T-Bird PatrolThis Mankato Unit was organized in 1960 by Nobles interested

in promoting Shrinedom and giving the city of Mankato representation in Osman Shrine’s Uniformed Bodies. It was also established to provide fun for its members and entertainment wherever possible, especially for children. The Patrol has grown over the years providing Mankato much favorable publicity with their colorful motorized units. We provide a very special addition to all parades.

In 1913 Osman was given permission to travel to Panama to hold the first Shrine Ceremonial in Panama. It was held in the bottom of the then-dry MiraFlores Lock and was the foundation of Abou Saad Shrine Temple. The trip started here, on the steps of the State Capitol when Osman was given a brass plaque to be placed at the site of the Ceremonial. (It is still there today to be viewed by ships passing through that lock.) They traveled by train to New Orleans and then by ship to Panama’s east coast and then by train to the west coast and to the unfinished canal. A few months later the canal was finished and water covered the site where over 100 men walked the real “hot sands” of Osman and Shrinedome. All of the events of the trip were well documented in a magazine called The Crescent and we will soon have a more complete display of the original photos and details of this historic trip.In 1996 Osman commemorated the 1913 trip with the Shrine’s first, and to date, only All Country (USA, Canada, Mexico and Panama) Ceremonial.

Provost GuardThe Provost Unit of Osman Shrine was founded March 5, 1959, for the purpose

of providing Aids-de-Camp to the Shrine Potentate.

One year later the Unit was officially recognized by Osman Shrine. Its members served as drivers for the Nobility at ceremonials, parades and other Shrine functions.

Membership was originally restricted to 40 men and later increased to 100. The Unit presently includes both active and social members, and is a Reserve Unit of the Ramsey County Sheriff ’s Department.

The Unit’s responsibilities have changed over the years. In 1996 the Osman Sentinels Unit was merged into the Provost Guard. Today’s Provost Unit participates in parades by accompanying other Shrine Units and provides security at numerous events, including Osman’s annual Circus.

Within the Unit is a ten-member Traffic Control group. This group, assisted by other Unit members as necessary, is highly visible to the Nobility in directing traffic and parking at all Shrine functions. Traffic controllers also direct school bus traffic and parking at all Circus performances.

St. Cloud Go-Kart PatrolThe St. Cloud Go-Kart Patrol was organized in 1964 with 15 charter

members. Each member contributed $100 toward the purchase of the Go-Karts. The carts were transported to parades on individual trailers, pulled by the member’s cars. The Patrol eventually acquired a semi-trailer truck to move the carts from parade to parade. The present unit was designed and built in 1976 to transport the carts. The original carts were destroyed by fire in 1979. The current carts were purchased for the 1980 parade season.

The Patrol has members ranging in age from 25 to 65 years.

The Go-Kart Patrol attended the Imperial Session at Indianapolis, Toronto, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Denver, and competes in the Midwest Motor Corps. We have won trophies in the Obstacles Course and Precision Competition.

The Patrol participates in as least 15 parades each year in Central Minnesota, and will travel up to 100-plus miles from St. Cloud to be in a parade. Club members’ Ladies usually accompany the Patrol to parades and provide an excellent cheering section. The purpose of the Patrol is to promote the Masonic fraternity, Shrinedom and aid to handicapped children through the Shriners Hospitals for Children and Burn Institutes. The Patrol feels fortunate to be able to perform this service and have fun doing it.

During the off-season, the St. Cloud Go-Kart Patrol meets monthly for dinner and a short business meeting. Special events include a Christmas party, a Valentine party, and an early spring kick-off potluck.

PatrolThe Osman Shrine Patrol was organized in 1908. Membership is open to all Osman Nobles, either as an active or as a social

member. This unit is a Drill and Parade Unit and is made up of members who can attend drills and meetings on a regular schedule. Social membership is encouraged for those Nobles who cannot.

The Unit drills for one hour on Monday evening (inside in the winter and outside in the summer).

The Osman Patrol participates in about 20 parades every year, beginning with the St. Paul Winter Carnival. The Patrol has been awarded many first place trophies for their activity in parades and took first place in the drill competition at the 1984 Midwest Summer Session at Fargo, North Dakota.

The Patrol sponsors several social gatherings during the year where hospitality and brotherly camaraderie prevail. Our Ladies join us in many of our get-togethers.

The Patrol takes the responsibility of ushering at the annual Osman Shrine Circus. Both active and social members help in the many and various functions of the Circus that helps make it a success each year.

Rochester Cycle PatrolThe Rochester Cycle Patrol was started in the mid-1950s, when

four Rochester Nobles of Osman Shrine received permission to ride as Potentate’s Escorts in parades, ceremonials, Midwest Sessions and Imperial Shrine conventions. During the 1957 Imperial Shrine session in Chicago, several of the original four cyclists could not participate in every performance, so other Rochester Nobles went along to fill in. All of the Nobles enjoyed the cycling experience so much that the Osman Shrine Cycle Patrol was organized and chartered in the spring of 1958. Initially, ten basic Cushman type two-wheel scooters were purchased for $420 each. Of the original 20 Cycle Patrol members, some purchased a bike of their own while others shared in the purchase. The Cycle Patrol transported the bikes

in an old gutted school bus.

The next purchase was 14 fancier Cushman cycles, plus a decked-out, secondhand three-wheeler cycle for the point man to ride. Upgraded to top-of-the-line Cushmans with flags, lights and sirens, this new cycle group soon became the top attraction at all functions.

In 1967 the Patrol purchased the new Yamaha 180 cycle to take to Rapid City, South Dakota. Patrol members continued to polish their crowd pleasing parade act and to develop a top competition drill routine. Today the Cycle Patrol rides 250 cc Hondas and continues to be active in competition and parade activities. The Es-Sprit-De-Corp is maintained in the patrol by its annual donation to the Shrine Hospital.

Osman Cycle CorpsThe Osman Cycle Corps is a new unit for Osman, starting in

2004. They are a precision parade and performance unit. Each of the members presently own and ride the largest “Ultra” Harley-Davidson motorcycle and maintain their own uniforms. They are all close friends and members of a Masonic order with high principles and values, all with disciplined riding abilities.

The normal riding season involves scheduled practice sessions, parades and exhibitions, yearly competition, and traditional social events throughout the year. You do not need to own a motorcycle, however, owning one will allow you the opportunity to participate.

Rochester Dragon PatrolOne of the newer units of Osman Shrine, the Dragon

Patrol, began in 1981 with sixteen charter members. During 1981 and 1982 the Dragon named “Chang” was built by set designers for the Chanhassen Dinner Theater out of leather panels glued together and formed over an aluminum frame for the head, and parachute material for the body. Funds to pay for this original equipment were raised by holding garage sales and pancake breakfasts. When put together, “Chang” stretches forty feet in length and has six nobles underneath to propel it along the parade route. Nobles in Chinese uniform march alongside the Dragon to protect the crowd from its smoky nostrils and moving mouth.

The first actual parade for “Chang” was in the Western Days Parade in Chatfield, MN in August 1982. Since then, we have paraded in all Midwest Summer Sessions, three Imperial Sessions, and over five hundred parades.

Since 1981, the Dragon Patrol has grown to over fifty members, has added a golf cart decked out in Shrine regalia with a gong, and has added a small semi-truck in which to carry all equipment to and from parades. “Chang” has become a favorite in local parades as we now are invited to participate in some 30 parades each year, allowing us to make annual donations to the Shrine Hospital as the result of our members’ hard work. The Dragon Patrol has received many awards for its parade performances, including in 1995 the President’s Award for Best Parade Unit at the Midwest Summer Session in Madison, WI, the first unit from Osman Shrine to receive this award.

ClownsThe Clowns were organized in 1957 by a group of Nobles who

were then members of the Director’s Staff.

Shortly after receiving the charter, the Shrine gave the Clowns a 1904 Ford Patrol Vehicle with the original engine as their first mobile unit. Several years later, the Clowns purchased a second vehicle, the 1914 Chevrolet Fire Truck that is still running well, due to the hard work of a few Clowns. Several Clowns use motor scooters or vehicles of their own.

Our monthly publication, Behind the Grease Paint, was started in February 1965.

It takes a Clown approximately one hour to put on the grease paint face of his own design that can’t be copied by another Clown.

The Clown Unit and several individual Clowns have won many trophies from parades, other groups, and the International Shrine Clown Association.

Drum and Bugle CorpsThe Drum and Bugle Corps has been a vital force

in Osman Shrine since 1921, proudly marching and displaying the colors. Through the years, hundreds of Nobles have given of their time, energies and talents to play and march in cities from coast to coast and various Imperial sessions. The original Drum Corps in 1916 consisted of nine drummers. The following year membership had grown to 22. Musical instruments were added and now include trombones and trumpets as well as the bugles, glockenspiels, and cymbals. Musical experience is usually required for membership and strict discipline is enforced. The size of the Corps is determined by the number of uniforms and instruments available. Often there is a waiting list of Nobles hoping to participate.

The most significant parade that the Osman Drum and Bugle Corps ever participated in was VJ Day, the afternoon of August 15, 1945. Over 100,000 men, women, and children packed the streets of St. Paul to witness and participate in this celebration.

The first Annual Fishing Party was held at Mille Lacs Lake in September 1949. A few years later the Unit’s famous initiation was incorporated as a feature of this annual event that is always well attended and enjoyed by the members.

The Drum Corps, in its early years, traveled mostly by train. Women were rarely included in the early festivities. Now members travel by motor coach or personal cars and the Ladies are always invited to many get-togethers and performances. After parades, an oasis is usually held for members and their families. Many Ladies also accompany the Corps to Midwest Sessions, Shrine Ceremonials and Unit Mystery Trips.

Today the Drum and Bugle Corps consists of active, social and honorary members. The Unit meets every Monday night at 6:30 for rehearsals and meeting. During the year, the Corps plays at 20 to 25 parades and performances.

Pipe BandThe Osman Shrine Pipe Band held its first meeting on September

18, 1997. Some members had been working with Zuhrah Shrine’s Pipe Band through the summer of 1997. The Pipe Band is the next generation of Shrine Units. All bagpipes must be purchased and maintained by the individual members. Most uniform components are also a personal commitment. The “pipes” were a dream of Past Potentate Robert Ferguson during his term on the Divan, and he chartered the Band in 1997 during his year as Potentate. The Band is honored to have him as its first Honorary Member and to have his family’s tartan as the Band’s official kilt.

ChantersWith the approval of Potentate Clarence L. Finger, the

Osman Shrine Chanters were organized March 2, 1934, with 24 Charter Members. Some of the Unit’s original members were part of the Osman Shrine Quartet and the Harmonists. Both of these groups were active earlier in a 1925 production of the Jollies at the St. Paul Auditorium.

The Chanters have sung on radio and TV. They have delighted audiences with performances at Blue Lodges, Eastern Star Chapters, other Masonic bodies, the Shrine Hospital, other hospitals, Acacia Park Cemetery, funerals, Elks Lodges, festivals, churches, nursing homes, retirement homes, Como Park Pavilion, the once popular “Pop Concerts” and various shows. One of the Unit’s primary duties is to sing at Shrine-stated meetings and Ceremonials.

The Chanters have been active at the Circus over the years and look forward each year to busy days at the food booths and other activities.

For several years, this Osman Unit has taken an active part in the Midwest Shrine Association in the Chanter competition. Uniforms have varied over the years, but have always been colorful. Formal evening dress continues to be the black tuxedo and black bow tie and the Shrine Fez.

Osman Chanters are comprised of men who love to sing and are willing to spend the time and effort to produce results that can be enjoyed by others.

Rehearsal sessions are held weekly. Our ladies are our biggest fans and enjoy many of our social activities with an occasional dinner dance.
