Page and Stage: Shakespeare at Northwestern Libraries Sat, April 23 to Fri, September 2, all day, free University Library, 1970 Campus Dr, Evanston Contact: Clare Roccaforte, [email protected], 847-467-5918

William Shakespeare did not write from a lofty tower; his relatable themes, colorful characters, sharp satire, and bawdy jokes have always marked him a man of the people. Join Northwestern Libraries as we revel in our many holdings, from rare books to theatre archives to our general collection, that give students and faculty different ways to discover, learn from, and re-tell Shakespeare’s tales. Dawes Delivers the Vote: A Glimpse at Elections, 1896-1924 Mon, June 13 to Fri, Nov 11, all day, free University Library, 1970 Campus Dr, Evanston Contact: Clare Roccaforte, [email protected], 847-467-5918 Evanston-resident, ambassador, U.S. comptroller, brigadier general, Nobel laureate: Charles Gates Dawes played many roles in his life, but perhaps he is best known as vice president under Calvin Coolidge from 1925 to 1929. Landscape of Subjunctive: Taehoon Kim Fri, June 24 – Fri, Aug 12, free Dittmar Gallery, 1999 Campus Dr., Evanston Taehoon Kim’s work evokes a place between the subconscious and the evolution of substance. He uses materials that are modified and hybridized, as a metaphor for amorphous communication and the struggle for psychological interaction between space and colors. Also, his work attempts to reveal and develop a persuasive reflection on the essence of humanity and our relationships with other creatures.

Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a small time East End hood, now in Brighton to collect £6,000 from his fiancée’s dad. Superior, Chicago Contact: Alexa Ann Nash, [email protected], 312-503-4893 Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most lethal and common type of primary brain tumor. GBM displays striking cellular hierarchy containing glioma stem cells (GSCs). GSCs are functionally defined by extensive self-renewal, multi-lineage potency and potent tumor propagation. As GSCs promote tumor angiogenesis including vascular pericyte formation, cancer invasion, therapeutic resistance and tumor recurrence, therapeutic targeting of GSCs may significantly improve GBM treatment. We have identified several key signaling regulators that control the self-renewal and tumorigenic potential of GSCs. Molecular targeting of GSCs through functional inhibition of the newly identified targets in preclinical studies will be discussed. The presentation will be by faculty candidate Shideng Bao of the Cleveland Clinic. One Book, One Northwestern

We think we want information when we really want knowledge.

The signal is the truth. The noise is what distracts us from the truth. Nate Silver, The Signal and the Noise (2015)

One Book, One Northwestern is a community-wide reading program hosted by the Office of the President to engage the campus in a common conversation on a carefully chosen, thought-provoking book. The 2016-17 One Book One Northwestern choice is Nate Silver’s The Signal and the Noise. Silver, the founder and editor-in-chief of FiveThirtyEight.com, will deliver a keynote address at Northwestern on Thurs, October 6, shortly before the 2016 presidential election. It is a natural choice for Northwestern given the school’s investments in interdisciplinary work, data science, and quantitative analysis. This entertaining, elegant book on statistics and forecasting makes the world of data science accessible and it is a reminder that statistics are only as good as the people who wield them. Silver breezily investigates how predictions are made in a wide range of fields, including chess, baseball, and politics. He offers hopeful examples but weighs the process against a series of predicable catastrophes, such as the September 11 attacks or the earthquake in Fukushima, Japan. Events related to The Signal and the Noise will start in September 2016. For more information, please contact Nancy Cunniff at [email protected] or 847-467-2294. Nate Silver, The Signal and the Noise: One Book, One Northwestern Keynote Address Thurs, Oct 6, 4:30 PM (doors open at 4:00 PM), tickets are free and available at the Norris box office starting Sept 29 Pick Staiger, 50 Arts Circle Dr., Evanston Contact: Nancy Cunniff, [email protected], 847-467-2294 Author Nate Silver will deliver the keynote address to the 2016-2017 One Book One Northwestern program. There will be a book signing in the lobby following the talk.
