I remember my early school days with
undisguised glee. Endless days of soccer to
the point of exhaustion, easy walks to
school around the corner from my house
and dressing up in all manner of costumes
for larkabout theatrical productions. Mr.
Windsor was the head of Broadfields Junior
School in North-West London. He seemed,
to my ten year old self, about nine feet tall,
and spread a feeling of stern but fair,
paternalistic education. Mr. King (still
teaching there today), ushered into our
brains the first scientific thoughts. Mr. Allen was known for doing the Rubix Cube
blindfolded, and Mr. and Mrs. Davies (we couldn’t believe two of the teachers were
married!) led sumptuous class trips to Switzerland to show us Londoners a bit of the
wider world.
Most of these memories can be viewed clearly in my mind’s eye, albeit through rose-
tinted spectacles. Traditionally, when a Jewish child attends their first day of school
learning, we spread honey on the first page they see. In so doing, we forever associate
the activity of learning with beautiful sweetness. At the same time, we acknowledge
that kids, as they grow older, don’t always taste that sweetness and we have to work
on strategies to change that. As adults, we also need to be reminded.
Learning can be joyful for its own sake, an exciting search for truth, practical to help
with real world tasks and frustrating at times until enlightenment arrives. One of our
missions as adults is to never forget the original, idealized, sweet early experiences.
The other is to imbue the children in our care or mentorship with a love of learning
which we can do by modelling it strongly. I know I won’t have all the teachers in the
congregation on my side, but I think going back to school at the end of this month
can help remind us of the amazing world of opportunities afforded to us by the world
of learning.

President’s Message
Dear Congregants, I intend to use my monthly column to provide information on non-event activities going on at Temple Sinai. This will supplement the information provided at the Town Hall meetings. Please mark your calendar for the dates of the Town hall Meetings, September 18, 2016, January 22, 2017 and May 7, 2017. The meeting on May 7, 2017 is the Temple’s Annual Meeting. Every lock on the campus has been changed. This was done as a security measure as we did not know who had keys, especially because of construction. This was paid for by a specific donation from a generous congregant. We are in the process of painting the classrooms at the Shenker Academy, plus some minor painting in the Religious School. This will all be completed by the start of school. We have started working on High Holy Days. This is a monumental task which is progressing smoothly. The first Board Meeting of the Temple fiscal year will focus on a discussion of Board Member responsibility and team building. Later in the year, we will hold a session on strategic planning. Sales of stained glass windows in the Small Shul are going very well. There are only few left. If you have an interest in purchasing a window or part of a window in conjunction with another congregant(s), please see either Phil Scully or myself. The windows are $10,000 each and may be paid over five years. Profits from the windows will be used for education. Until next month. Shalom, Les Sherman Temple Sinai President

SUMMER LESSONS During our recent family road trip this summer, we visited beautiful places along the coast of California and enjoyed the common tourist attractions. One Friday morning we were in San Francisco, and my chil-dren were already asking “Where are we going to eat Friday night dinner?” Dina and I did not have an answer to this question, and considering the fact that our children are used to a tradi-tional Shabbat dinner, we assigned our teenage daughter to come up with a solution that would suit our traditional Shabbat dinner style. As Rebecca googled and yelped a va-riety of options, she finally made the decision at around 5pm, and it was a kosher Chinese restaurant, on the very west side of San Francisco. At 7pm, we were already seated at our table, joining a good number of local Jews who of-ten eat at this same restaurant. This experience left a mark on our San Francisco portion of the road trip, as it taught our children that no matter where you are, with a little bit of effort, and with a willingness to compromise, you can find your Jewish needs in whatever place you are. Explor-ing options, daring, and trying, are part of a learning pro-cess that we strive to put our children through, only to pre-pare them for the real path of experiences in life. Shabbat Shalom, Dr. Sharon Knafo Education Director
It has been an overwhelming time in our country with so much violence and hate. With the Orlando shootings so recent, and now with the violence in Dallas, I feel scared. Some of my fear comes from the fact that these shootings are happening in random places and for personal reasons and realizing that I have no idea when and where some-
one will strike again. I watched a video of a man close to my age right across the street from the shooting. He was filming what was happen-ing from his phone, so he could have the footage to post on Facebook. It’s scary to think that this man could have been shot trying to film this to post on his Facebook page and risk his life in the process. There was even a police officer trying to tell him to move away, but he stayed. He could have been killed just to send this footage to the world. I definitely don’t call that heroic. I call that scary. Friends of mine openly post their child’s unborn fetus. I have seen people’s skin concerns, and people ask questions to see what their friends think. I have heard friends talk about suicide, their own hate, struggles, death of a loved one, breakups and weddings, all on Facebook. All of this is very personal and even I use the site to openly place my thoughts almost like I was writing in my diary and about all the big events, trips and changes in my life. But, is all of this person-al information giving this site power? How far will people go to get the attention they desire? In the hands of someone with so much anger, how do all of these personal status up-dates make someone feel? What would a person with emo-tional problems do to get YOUR attention? I know there are many days friends’ posts affect me quite a bit. It scares me that a social networking group has so much power that it can affect someone’s decisions, and it makes me re-think how personal I want to be in my posts. I re-member when Facebook began, it was so exhilarating to write down how I was feeling, Now, I think twice before I update my status and think about how I can send a more positive message with my posts, because I don’t know who is reading, and how it will affect them. Warmly, Heather

From Your Sisterhood Temple Sinai’s Sisterhood has been planning the 2016-2017 year. Our calendar is being finalized with the Temple. The Temple calendar is very full and we do not want to conflict with any other Temple events. Once completed, we will be sending copies to all members. Since you have received your membership application, we hope you have completed it and returned it to the Temple. Most of
our communication is by email and we don’t want anyone to be left out of future mailings. Sisterhood is participating in “Macy’s Shop for a Cause”, a wonderful fundraiser for us and an opportunity for you to SAVE. Friday, August 26th through Sunday, August 28th, at any Macy’s store, the coupon purchased for $5.00 from Sisterhood, will give you 25% off on regular items and 10% off on electronics, watches, mattresses, rugs and floor coverings. These coupons are available at the gift shop or from Kim in the Temple office. Several Sisterhood members will have them available Friday before services. Sisterhood has, among its many events, an “Attic Sale” and we are counting on our members to provide the items for sale. If you are cleaning your closets this fall, we hope you will save anything saleable for us. We will be collecting men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, shoes, handbags and other items. In October we will be holding our Annual “Paid Up” Membership Brunch. Our August meeting will be a brain storming meeting, inviting everyone to come with their ideas for future programs and events. Hope you will join us with your thoughts and opinions. Remember, the Gift Shop is open every Friday evening, before services and we look forward to meeting and greeting you. B’shalom, Marge Nordell
Shalom chaverim! Hello my friends. It was pointed out to me that in the Shofar column last month I didn’t write any words of thanks to my predecessor, Sean Lyttle. It was not an oversight; it was done in the comedic sense of the column. Well the votes are in! It looks like I get to write this column for the next couple of years! I want to thank the men of Men’s Club for the vote of confidence.
As a retired teacher, I know that a good lesson plan doesn’t present ideas or points one time only. It is through repetition that the idea of the lesson is learned. To that end, let me, once again, list some of the many events, some one-time happenings, some ongoing, that your Men’s Club has planned for this year.
Our monthly breakfasts are part of our Temple Sinai culture. Usually held on the second Sunday of the month – with some flexibility needed because of the calendar, these breakfasts are wonderful social gatherings for our Temple family. But just as importantly, they are opportunities to hear a wide range of interesting and informative speakers from the greater Las Vegas area. Our August breakfast is set for Sunday August 21st.
We are planning a repeat of last year’s exciting “Saki & Sushi in the Sukkah” night, an all-you-can-eat sushi extravaganza. The date is Saturday, October 22nd. Watch for more details!
A new event that is waiting to be calendared will be an Israeli Kosher Wine Tasting night. There are wonderful, new boutique wineries springing up throughout Israel. They are producing some outstanding varieties of wine. We will be bringing some samples of these wines to Temple Sinai for your enjoyment. Keep alert as more information is coming your way!
Our ongoing Men’s Club responsibilities include both Friday night and High Holy Days ushering. Experience the “Power of One” by volunteering to usher at just one of our services. Send me an e-mail at mrgilbertmath.com and let me know which service works for you! I wrote that I would highlight the men who serve with me on this year’s Men’s Club Board. Each of them has made the commitment to turn our potential energies into kinetic, active energies for the benefit of Temple Sinai and our member families. This month I will focus on our Executive Board.
Sean Lyttle, our immediate past President, served Men’s Club and Temple Sinai so very well for the past two years. His leadership style is to be admired. I enjoyed working closely with him as 1st Vice President, sharing his vision of excellence for Men’s Club. Sean remains on the Men’s Club Board of Directors, as immediate Past President. Sean is a well-respected attorney in our community who hopes to use his Men’s Club Presidency as a stepping stone to work for us in the Nevada State Assembly. But after the Men’s Club Presidency, why would he take a step back?

Howard Beckerman, our 1st Vice President, moves into this position
from 2nd VP. Howard brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication
to Men’s Club and to Temple Sinai. Howard helped make our Men’s
Club breakfasts so successful by bringing us impressive speakers who
informed and entertained us. Howard, himself, is a great entertainer
and an outstanding ballroom dancer. He will be representing our
Men’s Club at the National Men’s Club Dance-Off in January. We are
fortunate that Howard continues to serve Men’s Club.
Don Marcus, our 2nd Vice President, makes a return to our Board
after a few years absence. It is rumored that Don spent that time
kayaking each of Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes. He has not confirmed (or
denied!) the rumor. Don takes over our Programming chores and will
continue to help make our breakfasts the best thing in town! He is
currently planning a kayak outing for Men’s Club at Desert Shores.
Craig Barishman is our Treasurer. He served one term as Men’s Club
Secretary, where he learned how to use a hand-held recorder. Craig’s
leadership abilities and creativity are clearly seen in his ‘other job’,
teaching Science at Vegas Verdes Elementary School. Craig is happy
to be our Treasurer;. It gives him the opportunity to learn how to use
an abacus.
Barry Duman, our Secretary, returns to Temple leadership via Men’s
Club, after serving for many years on the Temple Sinai Board. His
background in economics will serve us well; if only he would stop
referring to Guns ‘N Roses as Guns ‘N Butter! If you get the
reference, please e-mail me at [email protected].
Next month I will highlight the men of Temple Sinai who serve along
with us as Men’s Club Directors. Each of them has experienced the
‘Power of One,’ and it inspired them to continue their involvement as
we help make Temple Sinai true to its saying, “Your family, your
home.”
Join us. Help turn our collective potential energies kinetic!

What’s ahead in our Torah? Aug 5-6 Matot-Masei A double portion to end the Book of Numbers. War is raged against Midian. The tribes of Reuven and Gad ask to settle on the east side of the Jordan River. The Cities of Refuge are designated. The Daughters of Zelophahad speak up for their right of in-heritance. Aug 12-13 Devarim Moses begins his final words of in-struction to the Children of Israel, focusing first on re-counting their physical journey. Moses reviews the peo-ple’s reactions to the negative reports of the spies and the appointment of Joshua to succeed him. Aug 19-26 V’etchanan Moses pleads with G-d to let him enter the Land of Israel with the people, but G-d once more refuses his request. The covenant at Sinai and the Ten Commandments are recalled. Moses speaks the words of the Sh’ma, the credo of Judaism, and commands Israel to show their love for Adonai and keep G-d’s laws and ordinances. Aug26-27 Ekev Moses says that the Land of Israel will overflow with milk and honey if the people obey G-d's commandments and teach them to their children.

Temple Sinai is a warm and welcoming Reform Jewish community engaged in lifelong learning, social justice, and soulful worship. Lifelong Learning (Torah) – Wherever you find yourself, we want to help you get to the next stage of your Jewish journey. We offer formal and informal opportunities for learners to find genuine meaning and answers to keenly felt moral questions and per-sonal issues within the Jewish tradition. You will notice that we have a wonderful range of events from stand-alone events to three-session mini-courses to a two-year in- depth study.
