AFC Campus Safety Symposium in Ocala

On the 29th and 30th of June, Mercedes Clement and Nancy Jontes-Lee went to Ocala to the AFC Campus Safety Symposium. The purpose of the symposium was to provide additional information on campus-wide safety assessment and prevention best practices. The 2-day event included several workshops, companies that sell safety products to schools and a panel of guest speakers.

Ryan Wood spoke about crime prevention through environmental design; creating a safer physical and built envi-ronment. Simple strategies and examples to stay within budget constraints were discussed. Another speaker, Adam Stark explained how everyone at the college is responsible for the safety and security of information, how just a simple click of a link can lead to problems personally and for the college. He was followed by the founder of “Social Sentinel, Inc.” Gary Margolis who developed an automated social media threat alert service. All of the break sessions were very good.

Friday Rebecca Bolante, Director of Threat Management Resources from Chemeketa Community College did training on the best way to prevent targeted violence using a team approach for mitigating potential violence within the community. There was plenty to take in and we talked about some of the case that have previously occurred. If you completed the day you received six CEUs for the Threat Assessment Training.

Upcoming Events:

September 15 - Volusia/Flagler Heart Walk : 5:15 PM—7:00 PM

at the Daytona International Speedway

(1801 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach).
