We will get back to everyone on a timely bases, however, we do ask all interested parties to keep in mind that we’ll be attempting to select directors for our season in the chronological order of the season itself; this allows as much time as possible for each director to prepare and plan out his/her production. We’re hoping to have all directors selected no later than the end of

October 2017 at the latest. We’re looking forward to another great season of live theatre at Oyster Mill Playhouse in 2018 and hope you will join us.

SAVE THE DATE!!

The Autumn Meeting of the Oyster Mill Playhouse General Membership will be held this year on October 22, 2017. Ordinarily this membership meeting is held in September but the OMP calendar in September is rather full, so the Board chose a date in October.

The purpose of the Autumn Meeting is to review the financial health of the Organization and to take up any other business brought to the meeting by the Board or the Membership.

CAST ANNOUNCED FOR JEEVES INTERVENES

Director Lois Heagy has assembled a cast for the last production of the Oyster Mill Playhouse 2017 season, the hilarious P.G. Wodehouse comedy, Jeeves Intervenes.

Set in the 1920s, the play finds high-society in London

once again thrown into chaos by hapless playboy Bertie Wooster, this time in cahoots with his old school chum Eustace Bassington-Bassington. The two hatch a brilliant plan to dupe their meddling relatives in order to save Bertie from an undesired marriage and Eustace from an unwanted job in India. Needless to say, the plan soon goes awry.

But will the ever-faithful manservant Jeeves be able to rescue these bumbling fools from themselves? You’ll not want to miss this delightful romp full of deception and disguise.

Taking Leave Leaves Lasting Impression

Nagle Jackson’s Taking Leave, the sixth show of the OMP 2017 Season, gave audiences lots to think about in its depiction of the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The thoughtful performances of the cast and expert staging by Director Stephanie Via

won praise and appreciation from those who saw the show. Attendees who are dealing with, or have dealt with, a family member suffering from this awful disease recognized the richly accurate portrayal.

Spotlight on Carl and Doug Nieweld

by Stephanie Trdenic

When the musical comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels opens at OMP on Sept. 22, audiences will be seeing a father-son acting duo onstage: Carl and Doug Nieweld portray the two leading characters. Carl plays Lawrence, a seasoned con man, while son Doug plays his protégé, Freddy. Together, they plot to swindle a wealthy heiress out of her fortune.

Carl was last seen in Oyster Mill’s production of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change last season after a 7-year hiatus from acting. His involvement in theatre started a bit later in life than some. His first love was music, specifically playing drums all through high school and college for several musicals, and playing in a band. “I never did anything beyond grade school stuff,” Carl says of acting, giving as an example his role as Benjamin Franklin in the 6th grade. (And the author is certain it was a tour-de-force performance.) Performing in musical theatre was especially a change for him, given that he “absolutely hated” the voice lessons he was required to take in high school.

Carl remembers wanting to act at a young age, “but reality set in.” It was while seeing a production of the musical version of Jekyll and Hyde that he was bitten by the acting bug. “I found myself thinking, ‘I’d really like to do that,’” he says. But it was seeing a friend perform in The Mousetrap here at Oyster Mill that really sealed the deal for him. His friend challenged Carl to audition for The Music Man, an upcoming OMP show. This was apparently the equivalent of a “triple-dog-dare” for Carl and he agreed to do it.

The result: he was given the leading role of Harold Hill – at his first-ever audition. The friend? Not so lucky – he was not cast. “He was pretty upset about that,” he recalls, laughing. Carl continued performing, appearing in shows at Theatre Harrisburg, York Little Theatre (now the Belmont), and Capitol Dinner Theatre. He echoes the feeling of most actors when he says, “Once you do it, you’re pretty much hooked.”

Although son Doug, who is now 23, was not yet acting, he was a part of theatre life from a young age. He and his brother Keith would watch their father perform, Doug explains, “um…when we were allowed to be there.” He began to help with backstage duties in various shows at YLT as he got older. It’s no surprise that seeing his dad onstage helped spark his desire to act. Doug’s fellow crew members, as well as Carl’s theatre buddies, also encouraged him. Doug says, “It seemed like it would be fun to get to ‘wow’ people. And maybe there was a little peer pressure from my family.”

Doug began appearing in shows in high school. As a junior, he was a member of the ensemble for Phantom of the Opera, and he was cast in Legally Blonde the following year. His first time in community theatre he technically shared the stage with Carl, in The Who’s Tommy at YLT. But their characters never really intersected, and they shared nearly no stage time. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels marks not only Doug’s first major production, but the very first time the pair has been side by side.

Their journey to this point began when father and son first saw a local production of this very show about 7 or 8 years ago. Both loved it. Carl dreamed of playing Freddy. “I thought he had the best songs,” he admits, “but as time went on and I got greyer, I thought, maybe not Freddy, but Lawrence.” When audition day came, Carl never thought they’d be cast together.

Doug apparently has a slightly bigger imagination than Dad. “When I saw the show, I kind of had a dream that we’d act in it one day as co-stars…and here we are,” recalls Doug. He never let Dad in on that, however.

Both men are having a great deal of fun with their roles in this extremely funny musical comedy. It’s obvious the pair are enjoying their time together. “I’m still gushing over the fact that it’s happening,” Doug enthuses.

Carl looks over to where Doug sits in rehearsal, and says, “Hopefully we’ll get to do more stuff together.” Smiling, he adds, “Being on stage with him has been a blessing.”

I don’t sing. I can’t dance. and I don’t think I want to be

on stage….. So how can I participate????
