President’s

Message

Greetings Everyone

First a big thank you to John Quick for stepping up and taking on the chaplain position. While we did have to cancel the

luau due to a scheduling conflict there is still plenty going on. By the way, our plans are to have the luau back next year…just couldn’t fit it in this year. Coor-dinating these events around other schedules can be difficult.

The riders are at Timonium state Fairgrounds on Fridays (see ad on front page) for motorcycle races. Check it out, it could be an exciting event.

The Auxiliary has the golf tournament on August 3 and the post has their crab feast on September 29, back at the post this year.

A new round of our Ace of Diamonds game has

started up on Fridays at 8:00 at the lounge. Come

on by meet old friends and make new ones, and

maybe you could win something while you are

there! Please come out and support this event be-

cause it is one of our important fundraisers every

year.

This time of year, the thing that is always on our

mind is DUES! It’s time to renew your membership

for the 2019 administrative year. Please pay early to

help us plan our year. Remember that you get a

$2.00 discount for being an Early Bird.

We have a great membership at 116, but we can

always use a few more helpers for our projects.

Make an effort to join us at a meeting to find out

how you can help. August meeting on the 9th at

7:00pm

Congratulations to

Tim ‘Squid’ Clarke for completing the Veterans Hike

Across Maryland

For those of you who don’t know, the Veterans Hike Across Maryland, is a se-ries of 5 hikes totaling 41 miles on the Appalachian Trail. It is the inaugural pro-gram of the Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group’s Veterans Hiking for Health initiative. The purpose of these hikes, which are free to veterans who have registered and agreed to complete a short survey, is to intro-duce veterans to the physical and mental benefits of hiking in a wilderness setting. Hikes were led by trained, volunteer hike leaders from the Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group, in small groups of approximately 15 to 20 hikers per hike leader.

Costco warehouse shopping is com-ing to Owings Mills. There will be a reception at our Post on August 24th beginning at 7:00pm, to sign up new members. Costco representatives will be here to answer questions and pro-vide refreshments. There will be in-centives for those who sign up at the reception, based on the level of mem-bership.

For Reisterstown Post 116

Legion Riders

An awesome Assortment of Amalgamated Announce-ments Aimed At a Fairly Attentive Audience for August!

First & foremost, I’d like to extend a gracious “Thank You” to Mr. Doug Lawrence!, our newsletter editor (& my boss), for pinch hitting for me last month as I recovered from a minor illness. Also, I’d like to correct an inaccuracy from July because Independence Day commemorated America’s 242nd birthday.

ITEM! Monday, August 19th is Presidents’ Day. Similar to Veterans Day, this non-federal holiday commemorates a day for all our nation’s presidents. To learn more, visit “Presidents Day Wikipedia”

ITEM! The President signed an “Executive Order” allowing both employees & certain veterans permitting those eligi-ble to use military-based commissaries & exchanges (similar to retail stores) as a new benefit.

ITEM! Several months ago, this column listed (“The”) Ten benefits veterans may not know about. I’d like to again list 2 that are of definite significant importance: •Any homeless veteran can contact an “Outreach Social Worker” at the VA Maryland Health Care System to learn about services that may be available to assist them. An Outreach Social Worker can be contacted Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm,except federal holidays. •Brittany White, LGSW 443-721-4930 •Brandan Pippens, LCSW-C 410-925-4310 •Jason Zick, LCSW-C 443-223-4133 •Scott Kutkat, LGSW 443-743-9409

•American Corporate Partners: Connects veterans with top companies to help them ob-tain a job (in their chosen field of interest) after their time of service. Visit www.militarybenefits.info/ (pick any topic) ITEM! I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of Post 116’s newly elected officers. I’m sure they all will per-form outstandingly!

(These are not free screenings)

We are starting the 2018-2019 Administrative Year off quite well. I want to thank the 75 members who have already remitted their 2019 dues. For those who have not sent in their check yet, please consider doing it now. It’s nice to get it out of the way, and it is the right thing to do. After all, just like with your household budget, the Legion has its bills to pay. Your payment of jest $34 helps the National and State Organizations meet their obligations. There are several ways to pay your dues. You may pay online, mail your renewal notice to the Posts with your check or drop by the Post Lounge and pay in person. If you pay at the Post or send your check in to the Post, you may take a two dollar ‘Early Bird’ discount, if desired, prior to Veterans Day. Thanks for helping to make the American Legion the largest veterans organization in the world!
