DURBIN CROSSING

POND PRESS

Happy August Durbin Crossing! Shark week is running on television as I write this, and it reminds me

of the beautiful animals that live in our oceans. They also do a terrific job of making me irrationally be-

lieve that everything underwater wants to eat me, even if only accidentally. Fortunately, we don’t have

anything nearly as exciting in our ponds, although I’ve certainly done a few double-takes when I’ve

come across a particularly magnificent Grass Carp specimen.

There are a wide range of reptile species that reside in our Florida ponds. Of the various types of turtles,

most common are the Yellow-bellied and Red-eared sliders, which are aptly named for their colored

markings. These guys tend to avoid people but can be seen sunning on lake banks or concrete culverts.

Florida soft-shelled turtles are another common species, recognized by their smooth, flat shell, very

long neck, and snorkel-like nose. Lastly, is the Common snapping turtle: the tough-guy of the Northeast

Florida turtle species. You can recognize these fellows by their bulky appearance, long digging claws,

and powerful jaws. It’s best to watch rather than interact with the turtles in your ponds. If you do en-

counter them (removing them from roads!) it’s best to wear thick gloves and keep your hands away

from their head- they will bite! Wash your hands as well: turtles can carry diseases like salmonella.

Of course, I would be remiss if I did not mention our living dinosaurs: There have been a few alligator

sightings at Durbin Crossing, but that is common in Florida. Small ‘gators are harmless, as long as they

are left alone. While cute when small, these guys quickly grow used to human company and become

less adorable when they start reaching 5 feet in length. Keep in mind it is a Federal offense to feed an

alligator. Any alligators over 4 ft in length can be removed by FWC by calling their nuisance alligator

hotline. Below that size, their diet mainly consists of fish and frogs.

The last of the common pond reptiles are everyone’s favorite: the snake! The two types you will find in

ponds in this part of Florida are the Cottonmouth, also known as a Water Moccasin, or the Banded Wa-

ter snake. Cottonmouths are venomous and considered dangerous, while the Banded Water snake is non

-venomous and a profligate coward. They are very clever, however. While they already look like the

Cottonmouth due to coloring, the Banded Water snake can also change the shape of its body and head to

more closely resemble the Cottonmouth, thus scaring away potential predators. The best thing home-

owners can do to keep their yards clear of either species is to ensure grass is mowed to the pond’s edge

and no debris is lying around which might give them a place to hide.

Attention ALL Durbin Residents,

The summer is winding down but we would like to finish strong! We hope you are aware that your Durbin

amenities daily, monthly or just when all of the planets align, we want to make it great. To see residents en-

joying the amenities, the Norman Rockwell atmosphere we strive to provide and making memories right here,

is priceless. However, we need a bit of help to keep the dream alive, please.

We would like to remind you of a few VERY important Amenity policies and procedures:

• Your DC access card is mandatory to enter the pools, gym, tennis courts, all amenities. If you have lost

your card - replacement cards may be purchased for $25, cash or check only please. It just takes a couple

of minutes to get a replacement card, at the South Amenity Center.

for full details on what is required, 904-230-2011. We look forward to meeting you.

• The age to enter either pool facility, North or South, without an adult is 15 years of age, no exceptions.

Please note, that ages will be checked at the front gates. Failure to adhere to this policy or falsifying infor-

mation can result in the loss of Amenity privileges.

• The age to enter the gym without an adult is 16 years of age. Again, ages checked upon entry.

• The age to enter the gym with an adult, 18 years or older, is 12 years of age.

Biker and Walker SAFETY

In an effort to keep all of our students safe

on their commute to and from school,

please adjust your sprinklers to NOT run

during school hours. When your sprinklers

are on during the day - it forces our bikers

and walkers into the streets. To be sure,

please avoid 7:30-9:30am and 1:30-4pm.

We appreciate your cooperation.

The first day back to school for St. Johns County Schools is Friday, August

10th. We wish all of our Durbin Crossing students and teachers a

GREAT and wonderful school year!

PLEASE be watchful for increased traffic and sleepy students crossing the

streets on their way to school, not only in Durbin but on your commute too.

School Bus Safety! Florida school buses carry precious cargo – our children. Motorists should always be alert and drive with caution around school buses and in school zones where children may be present.

Motorist and School Bus Safety Tips:

All drivers moving in either direction on a two-way street must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal, and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children AND the school bus stop arm is withdrawn. On a highway divided by a paved median, all drivers moving in either direction must stop for a school bus dis-playing a stop signal, and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children AND the school bus stop arm is withdrawn. On a highway divided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least 5 feet wide, drivers moving in the oppo-site direction do not have to stop for the bus (painted lines or pavement markings are not considered barriers). However, these motorists should slow down and watch for students loading or unloading from the bus. Be alert and watch for children especially near schools, bus stops, school buses and in school parking lots. Pay extra attention to lower speed limits in school zones. Watch for and obey signals from school crossing guards. Only drive or park in authorized areas to drop off or pick up children at school.

Each illegal pass-by could result in a tragic injury or fatality of a student. The inconvenience of an extra few sec-onds spent waiting for a stopped school bus is insignificant compared to the loss of a child’s life. Drivers who improperly pass a stopped school bus commit a moving violation subject to citation and will be re-quired to complete a basic Driver Improvement Course upon conviction.

Safety at the Bus Stop:

Arrive at the bus stop about five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Never sit on the roadway or the curb while waiting for your bus; wait in a safe place away from the road. Never speak to strangers at the bus stop or get into a car with a stranger. Always tell your parents, the bus driver and a teacher at school if a stranger tries to talk to you or pick you up. When the bus stops, wait for the driver’s signal that it is safe to cross the road or board the bus. If crossing the street, look left, right and left again. Make eye contact and make sure your bus driver can see you as you cross the street. Never walk behind the school bus and stay away from the bus wheels at all times.

Safety on the Bus:

Know your bus driver’s name and bus number. Remain seated at all times and keep the aisle clear. Don’t put your head, hands or arms out the window. Stop talking and remain silent when the bus comes to a rail-road crossing so the driver can hear if a train is approaching. Avoid any loud or disruptive behavior that could distract the bus driver from safely operating the bus.

School bus traffic violations can be both dangerous and costly. Remember your bus safety rules, be cautious and drive safely.

Let’s have a great school year at Durbin Crossing!

Florida is the lightning capital of the United States and it is ranked as the

number one state for deaths due to lightning.

Did you know that lightning kills more people in the U.S.

than hurricanes and tornadoes combined?

Lightning travels at the speed of light, while thunder travels at the speed of sound.

A single bolt of lightning can discharge about 100 million bolts of electricity and can

travel as far as 10 miles from a cloud. It does not need to be dark directly overhead.

If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance!

It has been known to travel through clear air and strike 10 miles from the

storm like a bolt out of the blue!

Lightning is actually 5 times hotter than the sun’s surface!

With all of this knowledge and critical information we’d like to remind you of

Durbin Crossing’s thunderstorm policy. If we hear thunder or see lightning, we will

close the facility for 30 minutes. Every time thunder is heard or lightning is seen, the

clock is restarted to 30 minutes. This is strictly enforced for your safety!

No life is worth the risk!
