It has existed for about a thousand years, and all through the centuries, thousands of people each year have set out from their homes to travel to Santiago on foot, on horseback, or on bicycle. For many centuries, it was the most popular of the many pilgrim routes in Europe. There are several sections of the Camino, but in the last 30 years the Camino Frances--or French Way--from southern France to Santiago, has become very popular with walkers. That makes sense since the most common question I heard once I told people I was going to walk the Camino was: “Why in the world would you do something like that?” To be honest, I don’t know what my original reason was. Among other things, I wanted to find out a little more about myself. I wanted to see if I could handle the physi- cal and mental challenge. I wanted to get out and enjoy nature, to smell the fresh air (and the barnyard scents), and to slow down and pay attention and rediscover the simple joy of living in such a beautiful world. Mostly, I wanted the opportunity to pray and reflect. All you need to do each day is walk, be present, and trust that God will take care of the rest (even the blisters!). There is something to be learned from pushing yourself, it’s true; but there is just as much to learn from taking it slow, finding the right pace for yourself, and allowing God to catch up and journey with you on the Way. Whether it is a month-long or week-long pilgrimage across a foreign country or simply a series of daily things you do, I hope in these next three months you take some time to pon- der how you want to live your life’s journey. Take A Hike

As many of you know I recently returned from a pilgrimage in Spain. Along with 18 others, I walked 113 kilometers (about 70 miles) over the course of seven days. The Camino de Santiago (or the Way of St. James) is a medie-val pilgrimage route which brought pilgrims from all cor-ners of Europe across Spain to the city of Santiago de Compostela, believed by many to be the final resting place of St. James (the Greater) the Apostle.

It takes about 30 days to walk. The portion we walked is the last part of that Way. Thousands of peo-ple still traverse it for a variety of reasons. That makes sense since the most common question I heard once I told people I was going to walk the Camino was: “Why in the world would you do something like that?”

To be honest, I don’t know what my original reason was. Among other things, I wanted to find out a little more about myself. I wanted to see if I could handle the physi-cal and mental challenge. GREETINGS FROM DEACON MIKE AND JOYCE

It seems like summer has just started, and here we are writing an article for the August edition. Where does the time go?

We would like to thank all the people who worked so hard to make our Parish Picnic a success. It takes a large amount of people to put on a good picnic, and this year the parish seemed to outdo itself. Thank you for a successful picnic.

In June, Joyce and I celebrated 49 years of marriage. We both are won-dering where the time went. We would like to thank all the people who wished us congratulations. When I think about 49 years, I have to say I didn’t think I’d live that long, much less be married that long.

We hope everyone has had an opportunity to get away for a little while this summer, to refresh themselves, and look forward to beginning a new school year.

Finally, let us not forget to pray for those who are sick and suffering in the parish, especially Troy Neal. Remember Gene Burns, a long-time parish-ioner, who passed away since our last newsletter.

Remember the upcoming Koinonia, November 9-11, 2018. If you haven’t made the retreat, give yourself the gift of this weekend.

Peace, Deacon Mike & Joyce Edwards

AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE OUR GIFTS

The new school year is fast approaching and with it, many families in our community are making the com-mitment to send their children to our wonderful school. This commitment is made on many levels: spiritual, educational, and financial to name a few. For some families the financial part is easy; for some it is a stretch; and for some, it is a leap of faith.

We would like to establish an “Adopt-A-Child” program here for our school. With this program, we would ask those of you who have been blessed financially to contribute to a fund to help a St. Bernard stu-dent. Many school families, for whatever reason, simply cannot afford the education they desire for their child(ren.) You can designate a specif-ic child you would like to help, or you can generally contribute to the fund. You can contribute either through the weekly collections or online at the St. Bernard website www.stbernardlou.com.

“He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them

‘Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever

welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.’” -Mark 9:36-37

FACULTY CHANGES FOR 2018-19

At the end of the last school year, we said goodbye to Mrs. Charlotte Colyer and Ms. Hannah Daunhauer. Mrs. Coyler retired after teaching at St. Bernard for 24 years. Ms. Daunhauer leaves us after 3 years: she was married over the summer and will be moving out of state. We thank them both for their service and will miss them greatly.

Ms. McKenzie Recktenwald has joined the school faculty and will be teaching 1st grade. In other staffing changes, Mrs. Kathy Hoon will be moving to 3rd grade; 4th grade teacher, Ms. Amanda Vance was married and is now Mrs. Amanda Blum; Mr. Mark Webb will be joining our 6th grade team as a teacher’s assistant; Mrs. Caroline Putman will be teach-ing 8th grade. Please join us in welcoming our new staff members, and pray for a successful 2018-2019 school year.

ST. BERNARD VBS 2018

OUR SUMMER VISIT TO EYGPT HAS ENDED

This year St. Bernard hosted a sum-mer VBS for children in grades K-6 called Egypt: Joseph’s Journey from Prison to Palace on July 11, 12 and 13. Over 50 children and 23 volun-teers came together to learn about

the faith journey of Joseph from prison to palace and to sing, dance and have lots of FUN!

We would like to thank all the volunteers who gave of their time and thank all of the parishioners who donated items for our VBS. You can enjoy some snapshots of our time together on page 9.

Dates/reservations for next summer’s VBS will be avail-able in May of 2019. Watch the bulletin for details! If you would like to be part of the VBS planning team, please contact Mrs. Patty Abell at (502) 572-5011 or Cyndi Marlow in the parish office.

HOW DOES SOMEONE BECOME CATHOLIC?

It starts with just asking questions or with an “Inquiry” period. This is a time when those interested

are welcomed and encouraged to come see about the Catholic faith along with other seekers. Participants are invited to sessions where they are welcome to ask ques-tions and fully discern if God is calling them to become a Catholic Christian. If they choose to move forward, they will participate in further sessions. Whatever someone's reason or interest level, ALL ARE WELCOME, ALL THE TIME.

The process for children is very similar. The Rite of Chris-tian Initiation for Children is for unbaptized children ages eight and older. The children should be enrolled in either our parish school or Family Faith Formation.

To begin this journey, please contact Cyndi Marlow, [email protected] or 239-5178, ext. 125.

ADULT FORMATION OPPORTUNITIES

Opportunities for adults to continue their own faith and spiritual formation are offered year round at St. Bernard. This past spring and summer, groups participated in stud-ies on the Gospel of John and Paul’s letter to the Ephe-sians. Starting in mid-September, we will begin a new study called Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible. We will take a look at the story of salvation as it is told and woven throughout Scripture so that you can get the “big picture” of the Bible and understand what it is all about. This 8-part study will begin on September 10 and will be offered at two times: Noon in the All Saints Room or 7:00 pm in the Checkerboard Room. Please watch the bulletin for the full calendar of sessions and make plans to join us when you can. No RSVP is required. Any questions contact Cyndi in the parish office.

SECRET SISTERS

Secret Sisters is a wonderful group of ladies that meets monthly to celebrate Christian sisterhood by sharing en-couragement, friendship, and faith with each other during our fun-filled gatherings. After seven years of dedicated ministry to our youth as St. Ber-nard’s Confirmation Coordinator, along with her many other years of service with the Archdiocese at other parishes, Paula Miles will be “retiring” and stepping down as the Confirmation Coor-dinator. Although she is stepping down as the Coordinator, she is not leaving us completely. You

will still be able to see her helping out with Confirmation this year and in the years to come. We thank Paula for sharing the powerful witness of her faith with our many Confirmation Candidates over the past seven years. Her energy and passion are abso-lutely contagious and could never be duplicated. Cyndi Marlow, Faith Formation Coordinator, will be tak-ing over as the Coordinator of Confirmation effective this year.

BEST WISHES TO PAULA MILES

On April 23, 2018 the St. Bernard Preschool children participated in the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon to raise money for children battling cancer. Our families were amazing and we raised $3,160! The children spent a week learn-ing about bicycle safety and two weeks raising money. The event ended with the preschoolers practicing their skills while riding their bicycles at school. We had a great time and our families helped out a great cause.

STEPHEN MINISTERS CONTINUING EDUCATION

Some of you may wonder exactly what Stephen Ministers do when they meet twice a month on Monday nights. Always the goal is to pursue how each Stephen Minister may better assist and relate to their care receiver. Every Stephen Minister has an individual with whom to share special concerns. They are always looking to strengthen ways of finding God through that relationship. Four times a year Stephen Ministers participate in continuing educa-tion that helps find those ways to connect to their care receivers and to deepen their relationship with God. The Stephen Ministers are currently reading a book by Dr. Louis Profeta, called The Patient in Room Nine Says He’s God. The book is a collection of stories of how the author found God’s presence through others. Each story caus-es the author to consider how God could be talking to him through his everyday experiences. Dr. Profeta explores how we impact the lives of those around us. Everyone has a soul, a spirit capable of reflecting God’s goodness, one with the potential to impact the lives of others. How-ever, we need to know how to recognize it. That is not easy unless we know where and how to look.

If you would like to reflect on how God could be talking to you, we recommend you buy this book. Or better yet, ask a Stephen Minister if you could borrow a copy of the book when they are finished.

Those attending are asked for a donation of $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children under 12 for a simple soup and salad meal provided by the participating FC/HUM churches. Attendees are also invited to bring a canned protein item for the Individual Family Assistance Center (IFAC).

Our school’s third graders’ stewardship focus is helping the hungry, and they will be collecting your monetary do-nations at the doors of church the weekend of September 15 and 16. The donations will pay the fees of the walkers and support the Hunger Awareness Dinner.

Let’s together help end hunger in Kentuckiana!

HAND IN HAND MINISTRIES READIES FOR FALL

Save the date of Wednesday, Octo-ber 17th for the annual Legacy Breakfast held at the Crowne Plaza from 7:30-8:30 am. What began as a

small affair that introduced Hand in Hand’s purpose has expanded into introducing the people of Appalachia, Be-lize and Nicaragua who tell how Hand in Hand helps them achieve economically and educationally.

Our help matters. Money helps, but the heart of Hand in Hand is the personal effort of our volunteers. Immersion

trips are what makes Hand in Hand successful. Joel Yann recently traveled to Appalachia with a group of St. X students and plans to return again next summer. His biggest impression was how and why the standard of living in Appalachia is so different there than here in Louisville.

In other news...some of you are aware of the ongoing civil unrest in Nicaragua which began in Mid-April and has now escalated causing Ed and Barbara Dunsworth the directors of Managua School in Nicaragua to leave. As the civil unrest intensifies, more families are suffering economically. Hand in Hand is currently feeding 16 families and expects more as the unrest continues. Ed and Barbara will be here in Louisville on August 22, 5:00-8:00 pm at Joe’s Older than Dirt, 8131 New La Grand Road, with an update.

Call Hand in Hand. Ask how you can help.

FERN CREEK/HIGHVIEW UNITED MINISTRIES

(FC/HUM) UPDATES

The FC/HUM thanks the commu-nity for their efforts in “fighting hunger, preventing homeless-ness, caring for the elderly, and stabilizing lives.” In May, the most successful ever Gala netted

$36,000. In June, the summer food drive “Cans for Kids” was held, and in August the Back to School sup-plies drive will take place.

On Friday, October 27th from 6:30-10:00 pm at Wild-wood Country Club, 5000 Bardstown Road, FC/HUM will be celebrating the Loughry Legacy Retirement Soi-ree. Rev. Ron Loughry retires at the end of December and Renee Bryant will become the new director. Tickets are $50 per person and will benefit the Legacy Fund. The Legacy Fund goal is $250,000. The current total is $220,000. More information will be out in August and September.

In November, the Boy Scouts will come knocking on your door asking for canned food donations for the An-nual Scouting for Food Drive. The FC/HUM shelves are nearly bare. We hope you will give generously.

Rev. Ron reminds us “this is the season to think about our Holiday Cheer program, to eat chicken on the First Sundays at St. Ignatius, Wand to participate in Highview Community Holiday Fest on Friday, December 1st, from 5:00-8:00 pm at the Central Government Office on the Outer Loop. We have so much to anticipate and be thankful for.”

Happiness is found in doing--not merely in possessing. No, I don’t really “rise & shine.” Most days, I just caffeinate and then hope for the best. Stop focusing on how stressed you are and remember how blessed you are. Never let a stumble in the road be the end of the journey. No matter how many years we get with our dog, it’s never long enough. Lord, give me patienceBbecause if you give me strength, I’m gonna need bail money to go with it!
