IF YOU WERE TO CONSTRUCT Aprototype for a hard-working, New York

jazz musician, the Harlem-born, Brooklyn-based pianist, organist, bandleader andeducator Danny Mixon would be themodel. In the five decades he's been on thescene, he played with the brightest stars inthe business, including Frank Foster,Charles Mingus, Yuseff Lateef, PharoahSanders, Betty Carter, Kenny Dorham,Dee Dee Bridgewater and Cecil Payne.Danny replaced Bobby Timmons in ArtBlakey's Jazz Messengers, and was musi-cal director at Harlem's famed LenoxLounge until its 2012 closing. Danny, whose latest recording, Pass it On, cameout in 2015, was a student of piano masterSir Roland Hanna.

Often expressing his moving and mod-ern pianism in the trio and organ quartetformats, Danny has worked a multitude ofgigs in recent years. He could be found atThe New School as an adjunct professor, appearing with vocalist AntoinetteMontague in New Jersey, busy with theJazz Foundation of America, and frontinghis organ quartet at Showman's Jazz Clubin Harlem. Then COVID-19 shut every-thing down. Danny recalls wondering,"Where in the world are we going?"

"People starving. People on the foodlines. How am I going to pay my rent? Ididn't know what was going to be the nextmove by the government. There wereprotests in the cities. It was [the fear of]the unknown. There was a lot going on,mentally," the pianist reveals.

For the first time in his life, Dannywent months without a gig. Quarantinedat home, he fell into the kind of funk youwouldn't wish on a musician: the funk ofinactivity, brought on by the mentalfatigue of dealing with the unfamiliar andunpredictable times that lay ahead. "I was-n't motivated to touch my piano," hemuses. "I had no feeling for it. The onlything I had a feeling for was the melodica. It was my best friend."

A handheld instrument developed inthe '50s, the melodica combines a smallkeyboard with a mouthpiece. It's oftenheard in genres like folk, world and popmusic, with Brazilian composer HermentoPascoal, Jamaican reggae star AugustusPablo and jazz pianist Jon Batiste amongthe melodica's well-known performers. "Iwould pick it up when I was watching TV,"Danny explains. "I saw a commercial IIiked, and figured out the chords for theear training, the melody to learn the linesand the rhythm. That got me going."

A month and a half later, he returned to

the piano sparingly, and his trademarkkeyboard prowess slowly made its wayback to Danny's fingers. "I started playingsongs that I knew by heart," he notes, "andthere were a lot of things that as a pianistI needed to work on, like scales and chords… So all of that helped me to start playingthe piano again."

On August 10, 11 and 13, listeners canhear the fruits of Mixon's pianistic wood-shedding when he performs outdoors atthe Piano in Bryant Park (PIBP) series inManhattan, in a rare solo setting. A popu-lar performance program in the city for twodecades, PIBP has showcased the city'sfinest stride, ragtime and modern jazzpianists. Other jazz piano greats, includingTerry Waldo and Russ Kassoff among oth-ers, also will appear in the midday events.

The program's return will no doubt bewelcomed by music lovers starved for thelive performances that disappeared duringthe COVD-19 quarantine. Listeners areencouraged to wear masks and practicesocial distancing while enjoying Danny’spotpourri of original compositions andstandards. "It's part of my character andchemistry to play different styles of music,"he says. "I like a little funk, the bossa nova, the waltz, different meters … So I'm goingto demonstrate my ability to do all of that, and make people smile, make people heal, make people's spirit come up."

When the virus is brought to bay, andthings return to some altered form of nor-malcy, Danny hopes that hunger for livemusic will be a boon for the jazz communi-ty, and will inspire a deeper appreciationfor the music. "I hope that jazz comes backharder than ever," he muses. "I hope thatpeople come out and support the music andthe musicians, and the young people whoare playing. And I'd like the clubs to bemore respectful to the musicians and pro-mote them. That's what I'd like to see."

Danny Mixon plays lunchtime con-certs at Bryant Park August 10, 11and 13.

SOME PEOPLE COMPLAIN OFboredom and too much time on their

hands. Mark Morganelli is not amongthem. In pre-pandemic times, he was aperpetual motion machine, figuring outlineups for his Jazz Forum club inTarrytown, working with visual artists forexhibitions in the venue, planning outdoorconcert series and special events, lookingahead to the next project, the next year, the next challenge. And practicing, practic-ing, practicing.

It's different these days. TheWestchester County-based multi-instru-mentalist (trumpet, flugelhorn, piano),composer, arranger, producer and entre-preneur is still busy, still generating listsand lineups, still talking to sponsors anddrawing up contracts. But now a lot of deci-sions are out of his hands. It's not up tojust Mark and his wife and partner, EllenPrior, to determine how many of their care-fully plotted events, programs and per-formances will actually come to fruition.

As we scheduled this interview, Markwas waiting to find out if the club—closedsince Friday, March 13—could reopen, ifhis summer concert series was a go, ifupcoming gigs with his trio would stay onthe calendar.

But waiting isn't the same as doingnothing. In recent months Mark's energylevel seems to have ratcheted up, as hestrategizes ways to keep the shutteredJazz Forum viable and visible. He has runthe metrics of opening with a smaller audi-ence. He learned more than he'd everimagined about crowd flow, air flow, socialdistancing, between-set sanitation. Heworries, "Will people come out? I want toopen, but it's got to be safe. People have tofeel safe."

He's turned his focus to a variety of webinitiatives, including Facebook streaminga live performance from a musician's homeeach Saturday. "It takes us 10 to 20 hoursa week to prepare for each remote perform-ance," Mark notes. "Donald Harrisonstreamed from New Orleans. He recorded

the rhythm tracks himself, then played saxover it. We've had Bob James, KarrinAllyson, Jimmy Greene, a great lineup."

The Jazz Forum's third anniversary cel-ebration went online, with Mark and gui-tarist Roni Ben-Hur, bassist CameronBrown and drummer Tony Jefferson mask-ing up and taking the stage for the onlylive stream so far from the empty club. "Wegot about 6,500 views for that," Markpoints out. "People are interested. We gotabout 10,000 each for Donald Harrison andBob James."

Mark and Ellen produce weekly JazzForum @ Home blog posts and e-blastswith news, photos and links to video clipsof past club performances. The tag linesays it all: Because music sustains us.They've instituted a fund-raising cam-paign, Jazz Together, to stay connected tothe community and support jazz musicians.

Just before this interview, sponsorspulled the plug on Mark's long-runningseries of free summer concerts held incounty parks. "I had 25 acts bookedalready, I had banners made," he laments. With New York's Stage 4 reopening regula-tions mandating gatherings of no morethan 50 people, "We'd have had to make ita ticketed event. It wouldn't be feasible—acrowd of 700 to 1,200 is usual for each ofour outdoor concerts," he says. "This is thefirst time in 35 years we haven't had a freesummer series."

A few days later, state officials declaredthat the Jazz Forum must remain closed.

Mark's still waiting. By press time, there was no final decision on whether aseries of outdoor gigs in Sleepy Hollow fea-turing Mark's Brazilian Trio with EddieMonteiro and Nanny Assis, would go off asplanned.

Each day starts with music, with Markplaying trumpet or flugelhorn or piano, recording a short clip he shares onFacebook. "That's my morning music, Ipost it every day, usually by 7 a.m. It's aminute or so, just playing the melody of abeautiful tune, a standard, something fromthe Great American Songbook, maybesomething Brazilian or an original. It's asalve to the spirit," the multi-instrumen-talist says. While recognizing all that'shappening in the world, Mark's sense ofhumor shows no sign of flagging. He'srecently penned a pair of topical originals:"COVID Blues" and "Corona Calypso."

"We gotta stay sane," he advises.

Check out the weekly live streamsevery Thursday at 7 p.m. at www.facebook.com/jazzforumclub; find info onupcoming gigs, Jazz Forum member-ship, Jazz Forum @ Home blog, JazzTogether campaign and other initia-tives at jazzforumarts.org; MarkMorganelli’s daily music posts areavailable at www.facebook.com/mark.morganelli.

ANYONE WHO ENJOYS SINGING,whether on stage or just in the shower,

may want to check out JazzVoice.com, anextensive program created by acclaimedvocalist Alexis Cole. Billed as an onlinejazz vocal education community,JazzVoice.com offers regular programsdesigned to foster artistic growth in thecraft and art of making music.

A well-worn proverb reminds us that"necessity is the mother of invention," andthe pandemic has given Alexis plenty oftime and inspiration to let her creativitytake over. She explains, "I had to completethe semester teaching online and hadgreat success with it. At the same time, Irealized that my colleagues were alsodoing online teaching, and would be homefor a while. So it seemed as thoughJazzVoice was an idea meant to be. I justneeded to decide that it was right for me,and after several days of thinking I boughtthe domain and haven't looked back."

Alexis recruited many of the singers sheknows to become online instructors, offer-ing master classes, private lessons andsmall group instruction. The online facultyincludes Cyrille Aimée, Nicole Henry,Karrin Allyson, Paul Jost, CatherineRussell, Tierney Sutton, John Proulx andmany more.

The award-winning vocalist JaneMonheit jumped at the chance to be a partof JazzVoice.com. "I think what Alexis isbuilding is a truly valuable resource forsingers of all ages and skill levels, and I'mthrilled to be involved from the groundfloor," Jane says. "We're a deeply connect-ed community as vocalists, and to have aplace to come together and learn from eachother, even with interpreters where need-ed, is a huge gift in this new normal."

Growing up in Florida, Alexis discov-ered her love for jazz while at the New

World School of the Arts in Miami. Aftertwo years at the University of Miami, shetransferred to the renowned jazz studiesprogram at William Paterson University, completing a B.A. in music, followed by amaster's degree from Queens College.

In 2009, she joined the Army and spentseven years as lead singer for West Point'sJazz Knights big band, honing her skillsand growing as a musician and as a per-son. Since leaving the military, she hasrecorded several critically acclaimed CDsand performed at many of the world's best-known venues, including The Carlyle,Carnegie Hall, Birdland, Jazz at LincolnCenter and the Blue Note.

Not only has she built an enthusiasticand loyal fan base, she has been recognizedby critics as a superb jazz singer. JonathanSchwartz called her "one of the great voic-es of today" and New York Times criticStephen Holder praised her singing as"exquisite."

A passionate and popular teacher,Alexis heads the jazz vocal program atSUNY Purchase College. "I get a lot of joyfrom teaching and I'm so happy to give allof these great artists the opportunity toreach students," she notes. "Just as I writea song or sing a line, working with stu-dents to create their own authentic inter-pretations is making art."

In addition to booking private lessons,JazzVoice.com offers three tiers of mem-bership starting at $15 a month. "I don'twant to exclude anybody, so we've pricedthe various programs to be extremelyaffordable," Alexis says. "Depending ontheir membership, people can attend ourweekly Zoom master classes, participate inweekly skills-building workshops, and dipinto our program archives."

JazzVoice.com even offers a monthlynetworking hang with working profession-als and the roster of online teachers.

Upcoming master classes include:Catherine Russell, August 4; VanessaRubin, August 12; Jay Clayton, August 23;and Sheila Jordan, September 2.Upcoming professional development ses-sions include Building Your Fan Base,Crafting Your Message, and Ask a Pro,with recording engineer Katherine Miller.

Alexis sums it up perfectly, saying , "In this difficult time,[JazzVoice.com] is a balm to come together

found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.

Jim Hall and I once played a gig with Lee Konitz out on Long Island. I was living on West20th Street, and I owned a Volkswagen, so I told Jim I would drive him to the gig. Jim andhis wife Jane were living in a second floor apartment on West 11th Street at the time. Therewas never a parking spot on that block, so I told Jim I would pull into the fire plug space infront of his building, run in and buzz his buzzer, and wait for him in the car.

Jim didn’t want to keep me waiting, so he had his hat and coat on, and his guitar sittingnext to his amplifier near the door. As soon as he heard the buzzer he grabbed them both andran out into the hall. He never made it to the stairway. The power cord on his amp was stillplugged into the wall socket, and when he hit the end of the cord, it brought him up short. The sudden jolt pulled the cord loose from the amp, and it also looped around one of the tubesand crushed it.

Jim came down to my car laughing and crying at the same time. Fortunately, there wasan electric store in the Village where we were able to replace the tube and reattach the powercord, and we made it to the gig on time.

A Moment You Missed by Fran Kaufman Hot House

Contributing PhotographerGratitude is the word that most comes to mind whenI think of the generosity of jazz musicians. The coron-avirus lockdown has robbed players of their liveli-hoods. But they continue to make music, most of themfrom their homes. I am grateful for all those who havecome to me via my computer. Among them, AllanHarris, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Sullivan Fortner, JayLeonhart, Cyrus Chestnut, Kenny Barron, ReginaCarter, Alvester Garnett and Dezron Douglas.Standing in for all of them in this photo are pianistDan Tepfer and bassist Linda May Han Oh, whorecently brightened my day from their living rooms.
