2020/21 Subscriptions

Members are reminded that the 2020/21 subscription fees were due for payment by 30 June. Payment details appear on page 15 of this circular and it would be appreciated that, if you haven’t yet paid, payment be made as soon as possible.

If any member belongs to more than one walking club affiliated with Bushwalking Victoria could you please email details to the Treasurer, Terry Simpson, at [email protected] as this information may affect the insurance charges which are paid annually by our club to Bushwalking Victoria.

Finally, members are reminded that under the club’s Constitution if a member fails to pay the annual subscription by 30 November in any year the member shall be deemed unfinancial and the Executive may then terminate that member’s membership.

Visitors Fee

A $5.00 fee will now be charged to all visitors attending club walks. Walk leaders will collect the cash from each visitor and will then be able to transfer the money to the Treasurer by a bank transfer.

Chatter Around the Hut

This story below details the construction of our first hut at Donna Buang and is reproduced in full from “The Melbourne Walker” (Vol. 3 1931).

Author Robert Henderson Croll wrote extensively for The Melbourne Walker and served the club for 50 years until his death in 1947 at age 78. Croll was an athlete, bushwalker and active in art and poetry circles..

A HOUSE IS BUILT. The Epic of the Hut. The Melbourne Walker Vol. 3 (1931) pp 17-19.

Part 4 of 5. (10 May 1930 – 17 May 1930)

Once more the weather did its worst. It was still all open-air work, and the rain fell without a pause, and was bitterly cold. Those who gathered stone to build the hearth and for the base of the chimney (both jobs were completed on this trip), alike with those who cut three necessary tracks through the sodden undergrowth, and who straddled the rafters putting on the iron roof, all were continuously drenched. The workers on the road looked worse served, however, for the water seen running from their boots. The new door was put in place, and looking at their work at the end of the second day the toilers saw that the end was in sight.

So heavy had been the downpour of rain that the charabanc cut the road up badly as it returned down the long slopes. Nothing if not thorough in what they undertook, the party jumped out with spades as each bad patch was ploughed through, and effected repairs there and then.

A week later they were at the work again, this time Messrs. Robinson, Broad, Wright, Weir, P. Read, Trahair, Burston, Schlippe, Bertram, Tranter and Waters, with (next day) Meyer. Under the expert guidance of Mr. Broad the floor and chimney were completed, and the windows were put in, and it could be said that occupation was possible.

Mr. Elsey, the Forest officer at Warburton, to whom the Club owes much, had had any big timber felled that endangered the hut.

Winter was now well in possession of the mount and the roads were closed to wheeled traffic. Only skiers visited the shelter. They reported that the chimney, like a bad husband, smoked too much in the house. The executive decided to have a new one.

If you are interested in visiting the hut or booking an overnight stay to enjoy the area please contact us at [email protected].

opportunities exist.

Morning Tea: At water hole 15 minutes into the walk, no facilities, but plenty of bush.

Walk Details: Walk passes through Woods Reserve to join Derril Rd. This is followed north to Moorooduc recreation reserve for lunch. There are toilets, water and shelter available. After lunch we will walk along Loders Rd for about 2.6km. This is a fairly busy road and single file walking will be required in parts. We will then join much quieter Graydens Rd and follow it across the wall of Devilbend Reservoir before heading west along Tuerong Rd for about 2.5km. This is a relatively quiet country road with some nice views. Upon reaching the Moorooduc Highway we have only about 1.8km of road walking back to the starting point. Most of the road walking has been necessitated by the need to eliminate an originally planned car shuffle to comply with Covid-19 social distancing requirements.

Escapes: No escapes.

Wednesday 5 Aug Keilor Village - Brimbank Park - Keilor Village Circuit

Note: Please telephone the leader beforehand if attending this walk.

Leader: John Ackerman Phone: 9337 1164

Rendezvous: 10.30 am at Lagoon Reserve, Keilor Village.

Map: Melway 14 Distance: 8 km estimated.

Grading: Easy to medium due to two significant hills.

Public Transport: Flinders Street Platform 5 catch the 9.32am Craigieburn train and alight at Essendon Station at 9.50, travel down the walkway and turn right to Russell Street to catch the 10.06 Bus number 476. Alight at Keilor City Hub, Lagoon Reserve just past Flora Street. Leader will be at this point with any car drivers. Bus should arrive at 10.26.

Private Car: Ample parking on Flora Street beside Lagoon Reserve. Destination Melway 14 J7. I would think that most drivers would go on to the Tullamarine toll road then just past Essendon Airport take the left fork on to the Calder Highway. Leave at Green Gully Road then turn left almost immediately for the old Calder Highway. We will return to the vehicles at the end of the walk.

Walk Details: This is a very pleasant walk, I did it in March and there are nice views. It has been designed for walkers who may wish to avoid

public transport and also for train travellers that will avoid most of the morning rush hour. Toilets and seats at Lagoon Reserve where we will begin with the tea break. The walk crosses no busy roads, but it begins with a steep hill. We enter Brimbank Park walk through the Kulin Wetlands, cross the river and stop for lunch at the park restaurant where tea and coffee will probably be available. Toilets are here. After lunch another hill and after attaining height walk around the horseshoe bend. Then return while remaining off road. Then return to Keilor Village. Sadly there are no escapes.

Grading: Medium, some rocky/gravelly sections

Distance: Approx 14km.

Transport: Private vehicle.

Walk Details: The route crosses McIvor Creek, turns right into Forest Drive, past the liquidambers by the creek (magnificent in autumn) and on to the start of the McIvor Range Reserve with its 1860s Powder Magazine and an old hay baler. A steepish rocky path leads to the imaginatively named Devil’s Cave – more grotto than cave and not obviously evil – before widening out to a track along the Range ridge with views either side through the light Box-Ironbark forest. Lunch will be midway beside the track. The return leg loops back via Gormans Track to the photogenic Viewing Rock Lookout with views over Heathcote and surrounds. Post-walk refreshments will be either from the back of the leader’s car or High St, Heathcote depending on Covid-19 restrictions.

Escapes: Pannells, Hylands, Cahills and Gormanns Tracks are all 4wd accessible.

Note: The liquidambers and other deciduous trees near the start of the route on Forest Drive are particularly beautiful in autumn.

Alternative Walks: 1. a much shorter loop between the Powder Magazine and Viewing Rock

We follow North Road to the impressive remains of the Garfield water wheel and then follow a water race past old gold diggings to the amazing ghost “Welsh Village”. After exploring this pretty area we will continue on to Expedition Pass Reservoir for lunch and return via Chinaman’s Point. At this time of year and after good rain, the Forest Diggings Area is looking green and lush. The tracks are generally wide and gently undulating. Some Bush Poetry

The Donna Buang Hut About 1934-5

"So this is the hut," said Reggie Mann

(In his hand was a raspberry fruit,) "I quite agree it's a nifty job, But I'd rather my old pink suit."

"It's not too bad," replied H. Wright, As he purred like a little Manx cat, "I must admit it's a well built place

But Id rather my cricket bat."

"I like the hut," spoke Burston Bill, "But I hated it's high expenses, though I feel it belongs to me

I’d rather be climbing fences."

"Oh don't be silly," said Kolling George, "We'll find it devilish handy, But I'd much prefer my little white shorts, They prove that my legs are bandy."

"You speak the truth," cried Tranter Nick, With the mien of a country squire; "This hut is cosy and warm enough, But I'd rather my private fire."

"Why all this talk?" yelled H. O. Luth, "When we're thousands of feet above sea?

The hut is alright for the likes of you

But I'd rather my cup of tea."

"You make me ill," said Reggie Murph' "And though I admit I'm a sinner, Not half of the boards in this hut is worth

My seat at a Christmas dinner."

Page 13: August 2020 Circular Viewable...2 August 2020 2020/21 Subscriptions Members are reminded that the 2020/21 subscription fees were due for payment by 30 June. Payment details appear

13 August 2020

"A glutton thou art," cried Wheeler Jim

As he swallowed some vitamin tack, "The hut is O.K., but I'd much rather have

A half dozen bricks in my pack."

"Quarrel not so," said Morrie the twin, "For men who are men it's so silly, Though I like this hut with its walls of tin

I would rather a married man's billy."

"The hut is alright in plenty of ways," Said Joe Matthews, of Forestry group, "But on a hot day, when I undo my stays, I'd much rather have nettle soup."

"Oh don't argue so," spake young Arthur Schlippe, "Take a pattern off good little me, For whether you say the hut's bad, or is good, I certainly will not agree."

And so they talked on with their preference votes

Until all the laughing jacks echoed their notes; And Donna Buang seemed to lift its old head, And a low muffled breeze whispered: "All get to bed!”

The command was obeyed, and the talk soon suspended. Which explains why this tale is so suddenly ended.

Springtime in the Mountains

It’s springtime in the mountains

Golden blossom blooms once more

The Wonga Wonga vines are in flower And wild orchids grow galore

Sunshine falls on the forest tall The eagles soar on high

When fragrant breezes drift along

Beneath the blue Australian sky

With the giant blue gums a flowering

And the mountain ash a bloom

The hazy, misty mountain air Is filled with sweet perfume

Streams flowing in the valleys

Grass growing on the plain

Its springtime on the mountains

And near Christmas time again

Wild flowers bloom in the bushland

Gone is the sleet and snow

The warm wind drifts through the tree tops

That shade the fern glad gullies below

Its nesting time for the wild birds

As they ply their natural skills

Building their nest in the woodland

That abound in the sheltered hills

The wild bush bees, the honey bees

In the hollow trees make their home

And all through the livelong day

Gather nectar for their honeycomb

So with mountain meadows gleaming

Beneath the welcome rain

Its springtime on the mountains

And near Christmas time again
