THE SUMMER SLIDE & WQPT'S FIRST BOOK

Have you heard of the “summer slide?”

It might sound like something fun—like

a water slide in the Wisconsin Dells or

a Slip 'n Slide in your backyard—but it

is actually a very serious reality for kids

throughout our region and the country.

The “summer slide” is the tendency

for students, especially those from

low-income families, to lose some

of the achievement gains they made

during the previous school year.

Combine this with what some

education experts are calling the

“COVID Slide,” and you have a recipe for

disaster.  That's why WQPT is working

with our partners—including regional

libraries, educators and organizations—

to put books and educational resources

into the hands of children in our region

who are most in need.

This summer, we provided more than

1,600 books to help our partners at

Spring Forward prevent the summer

slide in the children they serve.

WQPT also provided them with

summer reading charts, bookmarks,

and activity booklets.

If you have ever wondered what that

many books would look like, here is

a photo taken the day our partners at

Spring Forward picked the books up.

OUTREACH

Page 13: AUGUST 2020 GUIDE...Editor and the Dragon Horace Carter Fights the Klan Mr. Civil Rights Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP POV Whose Streets Black America Since MLK And Still I Rise

WATCH ITSelect a favorite, age appropriate

program and watch it with your child.

Ask your child questions about the

characters, the action etc. Co-viewing

can lead to lasting educational benefits.

EXAMPLE: Say you and your child

watch an episode of Clifford called

Special T-Bone. Believing in yourself

is the theme of the story. Talk about this

idea with your child. Help your child tell

you what makes him or her unique and

why that's important.

READ ITVisit the library and select a book(s) that

relates to the theme of the program. Read

it together, discuss it, and ask questions.

Or you can tell your child your own story.

EXAMPLE: There are many books on

feelings and self-esteem such as: All About

You by Catherine and Laurence Anholt,

I Like Myself! by Karen Beaumont or The

Way I Feel by Jana Cain. Ask your librarian

to help you make selections.

DO ITEncourage your child to draw, write, sing,

dance, to do anything creative that relates

to the book or the program.

EXAMPLE: 1) Draw, color and/or select

photos for a book or poster About Me;

2) Cut out dog bones and give them out

when someone does something special;

3) Play a game by naming all the people

who are special in your life; 4) Send a

You Are Special card to a friend or family

member.

If you can't think of a fun activity, select

one of our programs for Kids, then visit

the corresponding website. Many PBS

KIDS Programs have online activities that

are both fun and educational. Or contact

us—and we'll help brainstorm with you.
