Smith (8-5, 3.01) vs. Rochester Red Wings LHP Lewis Thorpe (0-1, 4.26) Two for the Price of One - The Pawtucket Red Sox – winners of 7 of their last 11 games but coming off back-to-back shutout losses this past weekend vs. Durham – and the Rochester Red Wings (AAA-Minnesota) play a pair of games tonight at Frontier Field in Rochester, but the games will not go in the books as an official doubleheader. The first begins at 5:05 pm and will be the resumption of a suspended game (from July 5) when rains halted matters just before the Red Wings came to bat in the bottom of the 1 st -inning of a scoreless game. The clubs will take a 30-minute break after this first game ends tonight (scheduled for 9-innings) and then play what was to be the regularly-scheduled game for this evening (which will be a 7-inning affair). The Sox and Wings also play tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday nights both at 7:05 pm. Pawtucket comes into play tonight in 3 rd -place in the IL North but by just a ½- game over Buffalo and by 3-games over Rochester. This Roadtrip – After completing four games in three nights here in Rochester, Pawtucket will then move a bit futher from home when they shuffle off to Buffalo for a 4-game wrap-around weekend series vs. the Bisons this coming Friday (7:05), Saturday (6:05), Sunday (1:05 pm) and Monday (7:05 pm). The PawSox will be back at McCoy one week from tonight to start a 3-game series and homestand vs. the (all but certain) IL North division champion Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Homestands Dwindling – The PawSox now have just that 3-game homestand (August 28-30 vs. Lehigh Valley) and a 2-game homestand to end the regular-season on September 2 & 3 (vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre) remaining. When Last We Met – The PawSox had a chance to complete a 3-game sweep of the Red Wings earlier this month at McCoy Stadium, but Rochester avoided the sweep with a 6-3 win in the final game of that set on August 5. The Sox had won the first two games over the Wings by 7-4 and 8-1 scores on August 3 & 4. The victory on August 3 rd (thanks to a Brandon Phillips walk-off 3-run HR in the bottom of the 9 th ) moved the PawSox ahead of Rochester and into sole possession of 3 rd -place…where the Sox have remained since. Pitching in for Offense – Back in early-August during that series at McCoy, Pawtucket took over the International League lead in Team Pitching when they surpassed Rochester. The PawSox have remained on top of the league since with their current 3.39 ERA while the Red Wings are still 2 nd with their 3.43 ERA. Rochester still holds up the rear of the league in Team Batting as Rochester is last at .227 while Pawtucket has gone on a big upswing this month and they are now 9 th at .250 (23 points higher than the Wings). Battling for a Batting Title – PawSox outfielder Rusney Castillo has begun to pull away in the International League batting race as he looks to become the first Pawtucket player to win the IL Batting Title in 37 years…since Wade Boggs hit .335 in 1981. Rusney, who is hitting .329 on the season, now has a 15 point lead in the race over Joey Meneses of Lehigh Valley who is at .314. Castillo (144) also leads the league in Hits over Meneses (137). Rusney is bidding to join some select company and become the 6 th player to win the IL Batting Championship following…Juan Beniquez (.298 in 1973), Jim Rice (.337 in 1974), Wayne Harer (.350 in 1977 – the highest batting average in PawSox history), Garry Hancock (.325 in 1979), and Boggs (.335 in 1981). Late Run But Not Much Time Left - Pawtucket has 15 games remaining this season (5 at home and 10 on the road). The PawSox – who have won 10 of their last 16 games – are 7-games behind wild card-leading Columbus (6 in the loss column). The Sox will have to jump over five teams in less than two weeks to get to the top of the wild card standings, however. August Moon – Pawtucket has posted some fine numbers as they enter the final full week of August batting .287 in the first 18 games this month (180-for-627) with 10 HR & 80 runs scored. The PawSox hit .233 in April, .227 in May, .258 in June, and .251 in July. Sox pitchers in August are 11-7 with a 2.65 ERA (47 ER in 159.1 IP). Pawtucket will wind up playing 30 games in 31 days in August with no more scheduled off-days over the final 14 days of the season (15 games in those 14 days through September 3). Night Owls – The PawSox are 6-games under .500 this year but they are over .500 at night posting a 45-44 record in night games this season compared to 14-21 in day games. The Sox have just two day games remaining…this Sunday in Buffalo (1:05 pm) and Labor Day Monday, September 3rd vs. Scranton/WB (1:35 pm) in the season-finale. Pitching vs. Hitting – Pawtucket leads the International League lead in Team Pitching with their 3.39 ERA while PawSox batters are up to 9th in the IL with their .250 average. The PawSox have out-hit their opponents on the season (1032 hits to 999) and have been out-scored by the opposition by just 1 run (Sox have scored 476 runs compared to 477 for the opposition). Home Has Been Sweet, But Road Was Bumpy – The PawSox have won 10 of their last 18 games at home dating back to July 14. Pawtucket was a season-high 5-games over .500 on August 4 and they are now 34-31 at McCoy. The Sox are 25-35 on the road (they had the worst away mark in the league until winning their last 4 road games). They had dropped 15 of their previous 20 on the road between June 26 – August 8. What Have You Done for Me Lately – The PawSox are 11-7 since August 1 after going 3-11 in their previous 14 games between July 17-31. Included during that stretch was a season-high 6-game losing streak from July 17-22. Their recent 4-game winning streak (August 9-12) marked the first time they had been able to win more than two in a row since a 3-game winning streak from July 14-16. Sweep (kind of) - The PawSox were credited with a one-game “sweep” the last time these two teams faced each other here in Rochester thanks to the most improbable PawSox victory of the season. On the night of July 4th at Frontier Field in Rochester, the Sox rallied for 4 runs with two outs in the top of the 9th to stun the Wings, 6-5. Game two of that series the next night was suspended due to rain after a ½-inning with the game scoreless. That’s the game that will be resumed first tonight. Rough Go vs. Rochester – Despite Pawtucket’s winning 3 of their last 4 meetings with Rochester, the Red Wings have still won 8 of the 12 meetings with the PawSox this season (including a 3-1 mark here at Frontier Field). And dating back just over two years ago, Rochester has won 12 of their last 16 games at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket since July 28 of 2016. The Red Wings won that game on July 28, 2016 in Pawtucket (after the PawSox had won 3 in a row over the Wings at McCoy earlier in that series), won 6 of 7 played in Pawtucket last season, and finished 5-3 at McCoy this season. Stats vs. the Wings - Pawtucket is hitting .219 vs. the Red Wings thus far (85-for-388) and have scored 36 runs in the 12 games…having been shutout three times, held to 1 run three times, 2 runs once, and 3 runs once during their 8 defeats. On the other hand, the Sox have scored 6 runs once, 7 runs twice, and 8 runs once during their four victories. The PawSox have hit 10 HR vs. the Wings (2 by Ockimey and 1 from Miller, Lin, Olt, Tavarez, Renda, Phillips, Witte, and the departed Jordan Betts). PawSox pitchers are 4-8 with a 3.60 ERA (42 ER in 105 IP). The Wings have out-scored the Sox, 44-36. Recently vs. Rochester – Theses two clubs have traded season-series victories of late. Rochester took last year by an 11-6 count, but the PawSox finished 10-8 vs. the Red Wings in 2016. Pawtucket went 7-11 vs. Rochester in 2015 (going winless in 8 tries in Rochester, although they were 7-3 at McCoy). The PawSox and Rochester wound up even at 8-8 in the 2014 season-series. Pawtucket lost the 2013 regular-season series to Rochester by a 9-7 count as the Sox dropped a season-series to the Red Wings for the first time since 2009 (6-10). However, Pawtucket (as the IL North Champ) and Rochester (as the IL Wild Card) met in the International League playoffs in September of 2013 with the PawSox emerging victorious in the semi-final series, 3 games to 2. Low Point – The PawSox (now at 59-65) were a season-low 10-games below .500 on July 31 and August 2 (49-59) for the first time in almost three years since they ended the 2015 season with a 59-85 record. One is a Lonely Number – The Sox posted back-to-back 3-2 victories at Indianapolis on August 10 & 11. Pawtucket had lost 10 of their prior dozen 1-run decisions between July 6 – August 8. They were 16-9 in 1-run games on July 4 which was the best winning pct. in the league, but they are now 20-20 in 1-run games this season.

Sad Endings - The PawSox have lost a game in the opponent’s final at-bat 10 times since July 17 (in their last 32 games). Pawtucket had suffered just 5 losses in the final at-bat of a game previously during their first 92 games of the season. Furthermore, the PawSox have dropped 10 road games since July 17 and 8 of those 10 defeats occurred during the opposition’s last AB of the game. During this span the Sox have lost games in the bottom of the 11th-inning, bottom of the 9th, bottom of the 8th, bottom of the 9th, bottom of the 10th, top of the 10th, bottom of the 13th, bottom of the 12th, top of the 9th, and bottom of the 8th. Overall this season, the Sox have lost 15 games during the opposition’s last AB while winning 11 times during their own last AB (6 walk-offs). Left at the Altar – The PawSox lead the league with 901 runners left on base this season for an average of 7.3 LOB per game. The club-record is 1121 LOB in 2005 in 144 games (or an average of 7.8 per game). Series Business – The PawSox are 15-20-5 in their 40 series this season (15 wins, 20 losses, and 5 splits). They have posted four 3-game sweeps this season along with a 2-game sweep and a 1-game sweep (in Rochester on July 4). The PawSox have been swept in a series four times this season (suffering three 3-game sweeps and a 2-game sweep). Nice While it Lasted - After winning on June 25, the PawSox went over the .500 mark at 38-37 for the first time since May 8. On May 6 the Sox had matched their season-high of 3-games over the .500 mark (15-12) from April 28 when they were 11-8. They also (for one night anyway on June 25) moved into sole possession of 2nd-place in the IL North for the first time since they were alone in 1st-place on May 11. Pawtucket is now alone in 3rd-place in the IL North as they trail Lehigh Valley by 15-games after being a season-high –18 GB on August 5 (the IronPigs own the best record in the league). North Face – The PawSox will finish the season with each of their final 15 games coming against IL North rivals…the only Northern foe they don’t face the rest of the way is Syracuse. Pawtucket is 33-41 vs. their IL North rivals. They finished 13-11 vs. the IL West and 13-13 vs. the IL South. Bye to July - The PawSox concluded July with a 10-16 record in which they battled in a wave of close games. Pawtucket finished the month 2-9 in one-run games, 1-4 in extra innings, and lost 7 games in the opponents’ final at-bat in July. It marked their third consecutive losing month...they went 11-10 in April, but then 13-17 in May, 14-15 in June, and 10-16 in July. The Sox batted .251 in July with 15 HR in 26 games while posting a 3.54 ERA. Last Tune in June – The PawSox – due to a 5-game losing skid to end the month of June – finished with a losing record in June at 14-15. They hit .258 with 27 HR in 29 games during the month along with a 3.41 ERA. They had their best month of last season in June going 17-14. A Hectic May - The PawSox finished an extremely busy May with a 13-17 record for the month. The topsy-turvy travel month included four different homestands and four different roadtrips. Pitchers posted a 3.60 ERA in May while batters hit .227 with 22 HR and 97 runs in 30 May games (for an average of 3.2 runs per game). The Sox played 30 games in 31 days in May with just one scheduled off-day (May 17) during the entire month. April Comes up a Winner – The PawSox posted a winning April for the 6th time in the last 8 years as they finished the month with an 11-10 record and in 2nd-place in the IL North (-2 GB of front-running Syracuse at the time). Pawtucket has had just one losing month of April since 2010 and that came last year (10-12). The Sox hit .233 in April with 16 HR in 21 games while pitchers were 11-10 with a 3.51 ERA along with a league-leading 230 strikeouts in 190 innings. Throwing Strikes – Pawtucket pitchers are 2nd in the International League with 1101 strikeouts. Durham leads with 1132 SO. Sox hurlers have posted strikeout games of 20 (April 9), 18 (April 20 & July 8), 15 (three times), 14 (three times), 13 (five times), 12 (eight times), 11 (six times), and 10 (16 times) this season. Pitching In – Sox hurlers are 1st in the International League with their 3.39 ERA. Hit or Miss – PawSox batters are up to 9th with their .250 average…it was .251 last Thursday and Friday which was their highest since they ended last year with a .258 team batting average. Defensive – The PawSox have made just 25 errors in their last 46 games. Last year the PawSox led the International League with a .987 fielding pct. while making a league-low 64 errors on the season (both new franchise-records). This season the Sox are 12th in the league with a .980 fielding pct. (89 errors in 4359 total chances). Blanketed – The PawSox have been shutout 13 times this season (8-13)…tied with Rochester (11-13) and Syracuse (6-13) for most in the league. Pawtucket was blanked 9 times total in 2017. They went 18-9 in shuout games last year. A Look Back Before We Go Forth – Pawtucket finished 67-75 last year and in 4th-place in the IL North for the second straight season. They dropped to a season-low 9-games under .500 on August 26 at 62-71. On July 18, 2017 the PawSox were a season-best 6-games over .500 at 50-44. Pawtucket finished 34-36 in games played at McCoy Stadium last season. Thus they finished with just their second losing season at McCoy in the last 8 years. The Sox went 33-39 on the road.
