Wednesday Nights Resume September 5

Book Club: Getting Involved with God: Rediscovering the Old Testament This fall, Chad Eggleston will be leading a book club discussion on Wednesdaynights about the book Getting Involved with God. The author, Ellen Davis, writes,"This is a book about getting, and staying, involved with God—what it takes, what itcosts, what it looks and feels like, why anyone would want to do it anyway. It is at thesame time a book about reading the Old Testament as a source of Good News andguidance for our life with God. The key piece of Good News that the Old Testamentcommunicates over and over again is that God is involved with us, deeply andirrevocably so.” We hope you'll consider joining us on Wednesdays at 6 PM startingSeptember 5! We have purchased a limited number of copies of the book if you'd liketo buy one at church for $10. See Mary Alice for more info. Throughout this worship series, we are practicing paying attention in our everyday lives. This week, consider the ways in which God pays attention to you. Pay attention to yourthoughts, feelings, emotions, and ideas throughout the week. Instead of ignoring them, stuffing them, or pretending as if they don’t matter, create space for them. How do youexperience God’s presence in this space? Share your pictures, thoughts, and ideas with uson social media this week using the hashtag #practicepayingattention We would also like to extend a special thank you to Heather Nessler for the creativeartwork, based upon our Scripture passage each week, that has guided our time togetherin worship throughout this series.

Council candidates, you'll be voting onnew deacons who will serve a three-year term. I was born and raised in South Texas, growing up in two small, middle-of-nowhere towns where my dad was apastor. In high school, I began to feelcalled to ministry. In pursuit of this calling,I attended Howard Payne University inBrownwood, where I first worked inministry, and best of all, met my wife,Lorien. In further obedience to God, we made thescary jump to Waco in December 2016 soI could attend Truett. We stumbled uponCalvary and immediately agreed that itwas a place where our faith could flourishand where our calling to serve God andothers could be put to work. We have been so blessed by our timevolunteering with the youth, and workingwith the students has offered continuedblessings and challenges as I explore newterritory. Since we began attendingCalvary, I have continually been extremelygrateful and in wonder at the intentionalityand care that goes into every decision thataffects this community of faith. After much thought and prayer, I feel thatdeacon ministry is a way in which I canboth give and receive from this churchfamily, by God’s grace, as we promise toeach other. I have come to love Calvaryso deeply, and I would cherish theopportunity to humbly serve you all. -- Evan Fleming I have lived in the Sanger-Heightsneighborhood and attended Calvary forthe last nine years. During this time Ipreviously served as a deacon. I ampleased to be offered an encore of thisrole in service to Calvary. I am a professional clinical social workeremployed in the psychiatric arena, havingbeen previously employed and ministeringin New York and China. I enjoy relaxing on the water, traveling, and hanging out with family and friendsaround the world. If you want to knowmore about me, feel free to ask! -- Melissa Gorton

2013 with our children, Jada and Dane,we expected to experience a bit of cultureshock as transplanted Yankees. We hadspent our married life in Indiana, Ohio,Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts, andhadn’t really considered living in theSouth. The draw of new faculty positions atBaylor was tremendous, and everyonewho helped us get settled in to our newhome and work were so kind. We feltespecially welcomed when we startedvisiting Calvary, and almost instantly knewthat this was the community with whomwe wanted to learn, laugh, and worshipGod. The people of Calvary are welcoming, genuinely caring, and want to be God’shands in helping each other through thechallenges of life. All the people we havemet through Sunday School and life groupmeetings love to learn and are willing toshare themselves and their experiences tohelp us all grow in the Lord. I have never imagined myself serving as adeacon, preferring instead less visibleroles such as on the property team. I seethis as an opportunity to grow in Christ asI learn to serve others and help fill theneeds of the Calvary family. I look forward to helping Calvary continueto welcome strangers and be the familythat we all need to smile and laughthrough good times and help out in timesof struggle. -- Jamey Fulton I am from Houston, but also spent severalyears as a young child in Oklahoma ndNorway. My husband, Rory, and I met atSouthwestern University where we wereboth pursuing degrees in history. We were drawn to Waco two years ago topursue graduate school. I graduated fromthe Garland School of Social Work in Mayand Rory will be graduating from TruettSeminary this coming December. As Itransition from graduate school to acommunity organizer position atGrassroots Community Development, Iam excited to be considered for the role ofdeacon. Before moving to Waco, Rory and I both

worked at Christian camps, which meantworking most Sundays. We loved theintentional community we had at thesecamps, but we deeply missed beinginvolved in the life of a congregation.Finding Calvary two years ago was ananswer to our prayers and we have soenjoyed getting to live life with thiscongregation! I am humbled and honoredto now have the opportunity to serve inthis congregation. -- Elise Jones
