The neocon war criminals who took the U.S. into an illegal and disastrous war in Iraq are back - and demanding a Syria War.

Attacking Syria won’t reduce the violence - it will only escalate it with devastating consequences for Syrians and Americans, as we learned so painfully in Iraq. The U.S. invasion of Iraq killed 100,000 to 600,000 Iraqi civilians. For Americans, the invasion killed 4,486 U.S. troops and wounded 32,223. Of the 2.3 million U.S. troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, roughly 20% suffer from PTSD or Traumatic Brain Injury, and hundreds commit suicide each year. Obama Honors 600,000 African Americans Who Fought in KoreaThe NorthStar News and Analysis, News Report

(New America Media) President Barack Obama recently issued a proclamation honoring Korean War Veterans, including 600,000 African-American troops who served in the Korean War, the first-integrated conflict fought by the U.S. military.

President Obama and Chuck Hagel, U.S. Secretary of Defense, saluted the Korean War Veterans on July 25, 2013. The 60th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended three years of fighting on the Korean Peninsula occurred on July 27, 1953.

The war began with North Korea’s invasion of the Republic of Korea in June 1950. The Defense Department issued a statement regarding the role African Americans played in the war on August 14, 2013.

“Here in America, no war should ever be forgotten, and no veteran should ever be overlooked,” said President Obama during a ceremony in July at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The Korean War was of particular significance to African Americans because it was the first war in which America fought with a military force that was officially integrated.

African-Americans thrown out of South Carolina

Restaurant A South Carolina man and several of his friends say they were refused service at a Wild Wing Cafe in Charleston last month and asked to leave. The reason: Michael Brown and his group of 24 friends and family members are African-American, and another customer - a white woman - complained that she felt threatened by the group. That’s according to Brown, who was celebrating his cousin’s last day in Charleston with a night out at the Wild Wing Cafe. Brown took his beef to social media, and the story went viral. The apparent race-based snub came after Brown and his group waited for a table for about two hours. ‘She said there’s a situation where one of our customers feels threatened by your party, so she asked us not to seat you in our section, which totally alarmed all of us because we’re sitting there peaceably for two hours,’ Brown explained. ‘Obviously, if we were causing any conflict, we would have been ejected out of the place hours before.’ As Brown and the shift manager were talking, a member of his party began videotaping the conversation, which is when the manager became upset and refused to seat the group.

Michael Jackson Estate Facing Massive Tax Debt On the near eve of his 55th birthday (August 29) there is yet another hurdle facing the estate of the late Michael Jackson. Though said estate was able to pay off the star’s enormous personal debt, said to be nearly a half billion dollars, according to Reuters, the IRS now claims the King of Pop owes them $702 million in Federal taxes and penalties.

Chronic Inflamation The Root Cause of Many Illnesses Dr. Andrew Weil writes: It is becoming increasingly clear that chronic inflammation is the root cause of many serious illnesses - including heart disease, many cancers, and Alzheimer’s disease. We all know inflammation on the surface of the body as local redness, heat, swelling and pain. It is the cornerstone of the body’s healing response, bringing more nourishment and more immune activity to a site of injury or infection. But when inflammation persists or serves no purpose, it damages the body and causes illness. Stress, lack of exercise, genetic predisposition, and exposure to toxins (like secondhand tobacco smoke) can all contribute to such chronic inflammation, but dietary choices play a big role as well. Learning how specific foods influence the inflammatory process is the best strategy for containing it and reducing long-term disease risks.*General Anti-Inflamatory Diet Tips:•Aim for variety.•Include as much fresh food as possible.•Minimize your consumption of processed foods and fast food.•Eat an abundance of fruits and vegetables.•Reduce your consumption of foods made with wheat flour and sugar, especially bread and most packaged snack foods (including chips and pretzels).

“I’m very excited ... to release my CD,” she posted on her facebook page in reference to her debut album which she recorded in Germany. “Lots of hard work went into the process. And it is time.”

It’s been a little over a year since supporers helped to send the phenomenal young performer to Cologne, Germany to record her first Official CD! Drea linked with a Germany-based Hip

she also looks forward to performing “Cry for Change” during her CD release. The song received almost 3,000 views in less than 30 days on you tube. Drea wrote this song shortly after the death of Trayvon Martin last year. Okayplayer.com, co-founded by ?uestlove of the acclaimed Hip Hop Band The Roots, had this to say about the video:

“There have been songs decrying the death of Trayvon Martin, but Drea D’Nur’s “Cry For Change” may be the loudest and most palpably sincere to date. “ (http://www.okayplayer.com/news/drea-dnur-cry-for-change-official-video.html)

Westminster Community Charter To Provide Free ipads To Each Student for Upcoming School Year

Westminster Community Charter School (WCCS) has announced that students in grades three through eight will be issued an iPad for the upcoming school year.

WCCS purchased iPads for 320 students in these grades in order to provide new educational opportunities, improve efficiencies and enhance and enrich the overall academic experience for WCCS students. The cost for the iPads was approximately $250,000. “iPads are an excellent tool for enhancing the curriculum at Westminster as they will provide students unique access to a wide range of academic tools,” said Dr. Ayinde Rudolph, principal of WCCS. “These tools represent yet another example of why the Westminster experience is so unique.” According to Dr. Rudolph the iPads will allow teachers to provide students with more individual attention while providing the flexibility for students to move at their own pace. The iPads also will enable the use of Khan Academy, Study Island, and other online-based education tools to which the students otherwise would not have had access, further enhancing educational richness while expanding opportunities for students. All common assessments for ELA and Math will be taken on the iPad, allowing WCCS staff to receive information quickly and make necessary adjustments. Students will also use the iPads to develop digital portfolios.

SPORTS TALK

Why the Bills Can Make the Playoffs

By Darrell D. Lane-Amherst High School Student

The Bills can make the playoffs this year because of the culture change from Chan Gailey to Doug Marrone. The Bills have a big history of not winning or coming in second with their four straight super bowl losses. This type of culture has cursed the Bills for years but, they have a breath of fresh air with a young college coach who brought Syracuse back to relevancy. Doug Marrone has given the Bills a breath of fresh air with the release of veterans (CB) Terrance McGee, (WR) Donald Jones, (QB) Ryan Fitzpatrick, (LB) Nick Barnett, (S) George Wilson and (WR) David Nelson all notable players in the Galley era. The signing of (LB) Manny Lawson, (QB) Kevin Kolb and the resigning of (CB) Leodis McKelvin have all been good moves.

They also had a solid draft with the drafting of (QB) EJ Manuel who will bring the Bill’s players and fans a jolt of excitement especially with the read option being so successful in the NFL now. I think EJ Manuel will have the same effect on the Bills that RG3 had on the Redskins.

In the second round they got (LB) Kiko Alonso who is an athletic middle linebacker who can cover tight ends in a division with Rob Gronkowski. The Bills also got (WR) Robert Woods in the second round who will be a great second wide receiver to Stevie Johnson. They also got safeties Duke Williams and Jonathan Meeks for depth at safety. Wide receiver Marquis Goodwin who is a burner, ran a 4.4 at the NFL combine and is an Olympic athlete. Kicker Dustin Hopkins is a kicker with a booming leg who can hit a field goal from the high 40’s to low 50’s and Chris Gragg is an athletic tight end. Talented undrafted free agent wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers who has first round talent just slid in with character concerns.

The Bills are in the less talented AFC Conference in the AFC East with New England in decline with Brady getting older, Hernandez in jail, Gronkowski with multiple surgeries and Welker in Denver. Miami is really overrated and the Jets are the Jets. The division this year is perfect for an underrated Bills team to win the division and get to the playoffs. Once you’re in the playoffs anything can happen.

“In addition to enriching the academic experience, these iPads also serve as an important tool for developing technological literacy among our students,” Dr. Rudolph continued. “Technology is becoming an increasingly important aspect of our society, and we want to make sure graduates of Westminster have the skills necessary to thrive and achieve future academic success through high school and college and into the workforce.” Dr. Rudolph also said that there is still space for enrollment at Westminster Community Charter School for the upcoming school year. “Providing students free iPads as well as other amenities is another example of the Westminster difference in building a foundation for education success that other schools simply cannot offer,” he continued. “We encourage parents to visit Westminster with their child and learn about everything Westminster has to offer.”

SOLO Sponsors Annual School Supply Giveaway SOLO Productions, Inc. will kick off the 2013 back-to-school season with its 4th Operation School Supplies Campaign which provides needed supplies to low-income families across the City of Buffalo. For many of these families, back to school season is also a reminder that they may not be able to afford the basic supplies—including pens, pencils, notebooks, backpacks, and art supplies—their kids will need to be prepared when school starts. Without these school supplies, students are put at a significant disadvantage when it comes to learning and concentrating in the classroom. On Tuesday, September 3, the giveaway begins at 11am at Solo Unisex, located at

3081 Main Street. Students ages 18 and under will also be able to receive discounted haircuts for $5 between the hours of 11am-8pm. Free food and giveaways will also be provided. Solo Productions believes that no student should be at a disadvantage because they lack basic school supplies. We hope that the community responds to Operation School Supplies by donating the necessary items that kids need every day to do well in school. The cost of a notebook or a package of pencils may not seem like much, but to a student, who can’t afford them, it gets them from one school day to the next—and that’s priceless.

If you would like to make a donation to Operation School Supplies they will be accepted through September 1. Please contact Tony at 499-7656.

“We wish to plead our own cause.Too long have others spoken for us.”

- John Russwurm, Freedom’s Journal.1827 America’s 1st Black Newspaper

Dear Editor:The Challenger recently gave supporters of Betty Jean Grant an opportunity to respond to an article I wrote in another local Newspaper. Unfortunately, not all readers of the Challenger saw the article , so they had no knowledge of what I actually said. All they read were the criticisms leveled at both me and my wife, Joyce Nixon, a candidate for the Erie County Legislative seat that Mrs. Grant currently holds.

The main thrust of my editorial was to point out that the debate was being sponsored by a group called We Are Women Warriors - an organization that Mrs. Grant herself founded. In my article I said that the organization has done some good work in the community, but they are far from being apolitical and non-partisan. Why? Because members of that organization have been actively campaigning for Mrs. Grant. None of that information was brought out in the Challenger editorials by Karla Thomas and Paulette Woods. Mrs. Grant and her We are Women Warriors group controlled everything, including the selection of the moderator, the format of the event, the time, the date and the location. Does that sound fair to anyone? It is the same reason Barbara Miller Williams did not attend the debate and it’s the same reason the Mayor Brown did not attend the Violence Summit that they recently hosted.

The Coordinator of the We are Women Warriors debate, Karla Thomas, was fired from her $91,000 a year job as the city’s Human Resources Commissioner. Under Thomas’ watch, the city paid out more than $800,000 in health premiums for former city employees who had died. Ms. Thomas was then hired by Betty Jean Grant as her legislative assistant at a salary of $35,000 a year.

Karla Thomas is now actively campaigning for Bernie

Tolbert and Betty Jean Grant, (big surprise) yet in her letter to the candidates regarding the debate, Ms. Thomas actually had the audacity to claim that it was being sponsored by a non-partisan, non-political organization that she coordinates!

Another Betty Jean Grant supporter, Paulette Woods used her editorial to say that I was an employee of Mayor Brown and that is reason why I said some good things about him. Not true. I am not an employee of the City of Buffalo. I’m an employee of the Workforce Development Consortium, a non-profit organization where I serve as the Youth Service Manager – helping young people get jobs through funding provided under the Workforce Investment Act and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Our organization provided 750 summer jobs for young people through the Buffalo Employment and Training Center.

It is common knowledge that both my wife and I have supported Mayor Brown since he was a Councilman for the City of Buffalo. I used my editorial to talk about the positive impact he and his administration have had on reducing crime in the City and in particular, his Gun Buy Back program that has taken 11,000 guns off the street. Betty Jean Grant has criticized that program for being ineffective, but it is hard for me to believe that one of those guns wouldn’t have been used in a robbery or murder. If the program saved one life, it was well worth the investment.

Mrs. Woods also said that Betty Jean Grant approved a $10,000 grant to NICYO - an organization that my wife has operated for 25 years. The fact is, the money did not go to NICYO, it went to the Bills Pop Warner football team. NICYO acted as a pass through agency for that funding - as it has for

numerous organizations. She also provides insurance coverage for many groups that would otherwise not be able to hold events in the City.

Joyce has been helping the community for the past 25 years as the Executive Director of NICYO and for the past 5 years she has been working without a salary – essentially volunteering her services. She has always told me that she didn’t get into helping people to make money - she did it to make a positive impact on their lives.

Karla Thomas asked Joyce why she didn’t just take some of the $10,000 for herself. Paulette Woods actually criticized Joyce for volunteering her services by saying that a lot of people do it and therefore it’s no qualification for elective office. Yes, a lot of people donate their time, but there aren’t many Executive Directors of agencies that are willing to that. If Mrs. Woods feels so strongly about helping our young people, I would suggest that she donate her large County salary to a not-for-profit organization and work for free.

I think my wife has done a pretty good job and now she wants the opportunity to do her work on a larger scale as your County Legislator in the 2nd District. I hope you will consider voting for her in the Democratic Primary on Tuesday, September 10, 2013.

Pitiful or Powerful: Which Way Black America?

On a crisp day in September, 2011, an airplane seemingly veered off course and struck the World Trade Center in New York City. When moments later, a second

plane hit the Twin Towers, the city knew it was under attack. A third plane was downed at the Pentagon, and when it was over, 3,000 people had perished under the weight of crushing debris and in the ensuing fires. The towers were completely demolished, and horrified New York City residents could smell burning flesh for miles. In the wake of the attack, government officials at every level took part in planning an immediate response to this heartless act. Large numbers of people were gathered, with expertise in all of the necessary fields, and the planning of a huge protest began. There were speechwriters, talented singers, and the most inspiring speakers to be found. They met to plan exactly what they would say when they arrived at the capitol of the attackers, taking great care not to script anything that would be offensive to them. The people were clear on the objective: demonstrate their humanity to those who were killing them in such a peaceful and dignified way, that the aggressor nation would be able to see the error of their ways, and cease the killing of innocents. The plan worked beautifully. Choirs and soloists ascended the stairs at the enemy capitol and sang songs of Zion in perfect harmony. A long line of speakers approached the podium, decrying the injustice that had been done, and imploring the attackers not to send anymore planes. All of them stayed on task, even removing statements from their speeches that some felt the attackers would be offended by. Back home, New York City residents noticed that over the years, there were no more planes sent into skyscrapers. The attackers would come and harass them regularly, killing one person here and two there. They would plot to depress the local economy, and dump guns and addictive drugs into neighborhoods for children to find. Generally speaking, the aggression had not stopped, but the offenses weren’t as intense as the attack on their World Trade Center. 50 years passed in this way, with NYC residents continuing to suffer greatly, but they always comforted themselves by saying: at least they haven’t sent any more planes! Then one day, enemy planes appeared over the skies once again. They stuck the very same buildings that the people had re-built after the first attack! Oh, the wailing! Elders cried out to the children, regaling them with tales of their suffering, marching, singing, protesting, to make sure that their children would live better, safer, happier lives. If those who hated them were going to continue to aggress against them, what was it all for? What had they bled and died for? With great determination, and an emboldened spirit, New York City found its resolve. They would not regress. They would not allow the gains that they had fought for to vanish before their eyes. They would go back to the enemy capitol. They would gather up the singers, the speechwriters and the speakers once again. This time they would sing harder, with even more fervor. They would be so very, very peaceful, so very, very dignified that the attackers would be sure to see their humanity this time. They would love the attackers – yes, love all the hate away. The speakers would be very, very careful this time, and just as before, the attackers would be moved. They would write some nice legislation and say some nice things about New York City, and vow to stop the attacks. This time, though, the people would take great care to include their children in the protest events. They would need to be prepared to return in another fifty years, after burying the dead, to sing the songs, and say the speeches, and treat the attackers with the utmost respect in order to win the peace. After all, the struggle continues.

These are preferable to whole wheat flour products, which have roughly the same glycemic index as white flour products.• Eat more beans, winter squashes, and sweet potatoes.• Cook pasta al dente and eat it in moderation.• Avoid products made with high fructose corn syrup.• Reduce your intake of saturated fat by eating less butter, cream, high-fat cheese, unskinned chicken and fatty meats, and products made with palm kernel oil.• Use extra-virgin olive oil as a main cooking oil. If you want a neutral tasting oil, use expeller-pressed, organic canola oil. Organic, high-oleic, expeller pressed versions of sunflower and safflower oil are also acceptable.• Avoid regular safflower and sunflower oils, corn oil, cottonseed oil, and mixed vegetable oils.• Strictly avoid margarine, vegetable shortening, and all products listing them as ingredients. Strictly avoid all products made with partially hydrogenated oils of any kind.
