We’re here to help support you on your faith journey, so you can find

true peace, happiness, and purpose in life. If you would like to join one of

our parishes, contact any staff member, and we will be honored to

officially welcome you home!

New-member registration forms are also available in the church

entrances and on our website.

Please contact Deacon John in the parish office to schedule the baptism and the baptism preparation class.

Congratulations on your engagement! Please contact Fr. Reker at least 6

months in advance to begin preparation.

If you or a family member is homebound or in the hospital and would like a

pastoral visit, please notify the office.

Wednesday morning there were only a few of us at daily Mass, but we were able to celebrate the feast of St. Bartholomew, an apostle. As I prepared for Mass, I was struck by the refrain to the responsorial psalm: “Your friends make known, O Lord, the glorious splendor of your Kingdom.” I have often wondered, prayed and pondered how the apostles went from rather ordinary, plain-spoken guys to powerful proclaimers of Jesus, the Risen Lord. No doubt their experience of the Resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit played major roles in their transformation. However, Mass on St. Bartholomew’s feast day graced me with a new understanding of an “apostle” (literally, “one who is sent”). The apostles were among the closest friends of Jesus and they were drawn into a deep and personal relationship with Jesus through the calling they received. Listening to Jesus, accompanying him and asking their questions enabled them to know him as much as humanly possible. Jesus changed the apostles through his daily interaction with them over the course of his public ministry and began to send them out to proclaim the “good news” of the Kingdom of God. After Jesus’ death, resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit, their transformation was complete and they remained faithful friends even unto a death like his own.

Although we may wish, at least on occasion, that we could have lived at the time of Jesus and followed him closely like the apostles, the amazing truth is that we can also be his friends. We are called, invited and nudged to draw close to the Lord, too. Jesus wants to accompany us day-by-day, speak to us in prayer and through scripture, and listen to our questions and concerns. One way to know Christ is through reading, studying and praying with the Bible, especially the gospels. St. Jerome, irascible character he was, clearly stated, “Ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ.” If you are not already doing so, I encourage you to read a portion of the Bible each day, perhaps the daily readings. Last year we offered a Bible study that was an overview of the Bible and I think that many found it very helpful. We are planning for the current year and it is a challenge to find a balance between a reasonable commitment of time and an in-depth study of scripture. I was hoping to focus on one of the gospels, perhaps Matthew, but most offerings are 20+ sessions. So, we are proposing an eight-week study on John’s Gospel, covering three sessions during Advent and five during Lent. You can talk me into the longer study or even repeating the introductory program; we simply need enough willing participants. Perhaps we can pray for a deeper desire to be a true friend of Jesus like St. Bartholomew and then act on it.

Sincerely in Christ,

P.S. There have been gentle reminders inviting you to participate in the Catholic Ministries Appeal 2016; both parishes are less than 60% toward their goals. Last year Holy Family exceeded its goal and the extra monies were added to the cemetery’s permanent care fund. Unfortunately, St. Joseph the Worker did not make the goal and we paid the shortfall this week, $17,008. Please support the Church’s ministries across southern Minnesota and our parishes.

you have given your best to everyone else.” -Dave Willis

LOOK IT UP - today’s Gospel Reading - Luke 14:1, 7-14

Have you ever rushed to get the “best seat” before someone else? All of us have done this at one time or another: Jesus wanted us to realize that when we do such a thing, we put ourselves before others, thinking that we are more important than other people.

Talk about it - What did Jesus tell us to do instead? How can we put the words of Jesus into practice? Jesus said, “Those who are last will be first and those who are first will be last.” What was he teaching us?
